Abstract

Objective: Contagious disease outbreaks and related restrictions can lead to negative psychological outcomes, particularly in vulnerable populations at risk due to pre-existing medical conditions. No randomised controlled trials (RCTs) have tested interventions to reduce mental health consequences of contagious disease outbreaks. The primary objective of the Scleroderma Patient-centered Intervention Network COVID-19 Home-isolation Activities Together (SPIN-CHAT) Trial is to evaluate the effect of a videoconference-based program on symptoms of anxiety. Secondary objectives include evaluating effects on symptoms of depression, stress, loneliness, boredom, physical activity, and social interaction.Methods: The SPIN-CHAT Trial is a pragmatic RCT that will be conducted using the SPIN-COVID-19 Cohort, a sub-cohort of the SPIN Cohort. Eligible participants will be SPIN-COVID-19 Cohort participants without a positive COVID-19 test, with at least mild anxiety (PROMIS Anxiety 4a v1.0 T-score >= 55), not working from home, and not receiving current counselling or psychotherapy. We will randomly assign 162 participants to intervention groups of 7 to 10 participants each or waitlist control. We will use a partially nested RCT design to reflect dependence between individuals in training groups but not in the waitlist control. The SPIN-CHAT Program includes activity engagement, education on strategies to support mental health, and mutual participant support. Intervention participants will receive the 4-week (3 sessions per week) SPIN-CHAT Program via video-conference. The primary outcome is PROMIS Anxiety 4a score immediately post-intervention.Ethics and dissemination: The SPIN-CHAT Trial will test whether a brief videoconference-based intervention will improve mental health outcomes among at-risk individuals during contagious disease outbreak.

Abstract

Abstract

ObjectivesThe Social Appearance Anxiety Scale (SAAS) is a 16-item measure that assesses social anxiety in situations where appearance is evaluated. The objective was to use optimal test assembly (OTA) methods to develop and validate a short-form SAAS based on objective and reproducible criteria.DesignThis study was a cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from adults enrolled in the Scleroderma Patient-centered Intervention Network (SPIN) Cohort.SettingAdults in the SPIN Cohort in the present study were enrolled at 28 centres in Canada, the USA and the UK.ParticipantsThe SAAS was administered to 926 adults with scleroderma.Primary and secondary measuresThe SAAS, Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation II (BFNE II), Brief Satisfaction with Appearance Scale (Brief-SWAP), Patient Health Questionnaire-8 (PHQ8) and Social Interaction Anxiety Scale-6 (SIAS-6) were collected, as well as demographic characteristics.ResultsOTA methods identified a maximally informative shortened version for each possible form length between 1 and 15 items. The final shortened version was selected based on prespecified criteria for reliability, concurrent validity and statistically equivalent convergent validity with the BFNE II scale. A five-item short version was selected (SAAS-5). The SAAS-5 had a Cronbach’s α of 0.95 and had high concurrent validity with the full-length form (r=0.97). The correlation of the SAAS-5 with the BFNE II was 0.66, which was statistically equivalent to that of the full-length form. Furthermore, the correlation of the SAAS-5 with the two subscales of the Brief-SWAP, and the SIAS-6, were statistically equivalent to that of the full-length form.ConclusionsOTA was an efficient method for shortening the full-length SAAS to create the SAAS-5.

Abstract

Background: Reported incidences of prostate cancer and masculinization of animals indicate a release of compounds with androgenic properties into the environment. Large numbers of environmental pollutants have been screened to identify such compounds; however, not until recently was 1,2-dibromo-4-(1,2-dibromoethyl)cyclohexane (TBECH) identified as the first potent activator of the human androgen receptor (hAR). TBECH has been found in beluga whales and bird eggs and has also been found to be maternally transferred in zebrafish. Objectives: In the present study we investigated interaction energies between TBECH diastereomers (alpha, beta, gamma, and delta) and the hAR, and their ability to activate the receptor and induce prostatespecific antigen (PSA) expression in vitro. Methods: We performed computational modeling to determine interaction energies between the ligand and the AR ligand-binding site, and measured in vitro competitive binding assays for AR by polarization fluorometry analysis. We used enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays to determine PSA activity in LNCaP and HepG2 cells. Results: We found the gamma and delta diastereomers to be more potent activators of hAR than the alpha and beta diastereomers, which was confirmed in receptor binding studies. All TBECH diastereomers induced PSA expression in LNCaP cells even though the AR present in these cells is mutated (T877A). Modeling studies of LNCaP AR revealed that TBECH diastereomers bound to the receptor with a closer distance to the key amino acids in the ligand-binding domain, indicating stronger binding to the mutated receptor. Conclusions: The present study demonstrates the ability of TBECH to activate the hAR, indicating that it is a potential endocrine disruptor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Abstract: Very little data is available about the presence of the brominated flame retardant, DBDPE, in the environment. This study reports the characterization of [13C14]-decabromodiphenylethane and the use of this surrogate standard to positively identify and quantify the presence of DBDPE in sewage sludge samples. The large difference in response factors between BDE-209 and DBDPE predicates the use of [13C14]-decabromodiphenylethane as a surrogate standard to improve the accuracy when determining the levels of DBDPE in environmental samples. Abstract

Two trials were conducted to assess the effects of repeated prophylactic formalin treatments on the gill structure of salmonids. In trial 1, which involved Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., approaching smoltification in a commercial facility, fish were treated with either 167 or 250 mg 1-1 formalin for 90 min every 2 weeks for 12 weeks. Formal in-treated salmon had slight, but not significant, increases in the frequency of lamellar fusion, numbers of lamellar mucous cells, and numbers of an endemic gill ciliate, Trichophyra piscium, after 6 and 12 weeks of treatment. In trial 2, which involved juvenile rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), fish were treated with 200 mg 1-1 formalin for 60 min twice weekly for 12 weeks. Significant effects were limited to an increase in the numbers of mucous cells present on gill lamellae. In both trials, there was no evidence of lamellar oedema or necrosis of lamellar epithelial cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

27. A route to trinuclear platinum–gold clusters

Abstract

New A-frame cluster complexes have been prepared by addition of electrophilic gold fragments to the Pt—Pt bond of [Pt2Cl2(μ-ppm)2], dppm = Ph2PCH2PPh2. For example, [AuCl(SMe2)] gave [Pt2Cl2((μ-AuCl)((μ-dppm)2] and [Au(NO3) (PPh3)] gave [Pt2Cl2(μ-AuPPh3)(μ-dppm)2]NO3. The complexes [(CH2)n(PPh2AuBF4)2] reacted with [Pt2Cl2(μ-dppm)2] to give [Pt2Cl2(μ-AuPPh2(CH2)nPPh2AuCl)(μ-dppm)2]BF4when n = 1 or 2, but the bridged bis(A-frame) cluster complex [{Pt2Cl2(μ-dppm)2(μ-AuPPh2CH2)}2CH2](BF4)2when n = 3. In contrast, CuCl reacted with [Pt2Cl2(μ-dppm)2] to give [Pt2Cl(CuCl2)(μ-dppm)2]. Attempts to synthesize A-frame clusters containing Pt2Ag, Pt2Cu, Pd2Au, or PdPtAu units were unsuccessful, and it is concluded that these units are considerably weaker than the analogous 3-center 2-electron bond of the Pt2Au unit. The AuCl unit is displaced from [Pt2Cl2(μ-AuCl)(μ-dppm)2] on reaction with diazomethane, with formation of [Pt2Cl2(μ-CH2)(μ-dppm)2]. Keywords: platinum, gold, cluster, copper, silver.

Abstract

We further study the action of SL(n+1, C) on the space of finite action solutions of the bidimensional Euclidean CPn models. We decompose the space of k-instantons into strata. Each stratum in characterized by an integer m with 0=m=min(k, n) which can be calculated from the instanton by purely algebraic means. The k-instantons with m=n are called generic. Their stratum is shown to be dense in the space of k-instantons when k=n. The isotropy subgroups for each stratum are identified.

Abstract

The presence of a wine-red antiprotozoal metabolite in cultures of G. fujikuroi (F. moniliforme) and another Fusarium species was first described in 1970 by Balan and coworkers. Subsequently, Kjaer, Bu'lock and their collaborators, after extensive chemical investigations, have identified this substance with bikaverin, a fungal vacuolation factor discovered by Park and coworkers in aging cultures of F. oxysporum and F. oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici. Chemical and X-ray crystallographic evidence established the structure of bikaverin as I. Its resemblance to, and spite some discrepancies in the reported properties, its probable identity with lycopersin was noted. The authors have compared samples of lycopersin and bikaverin directly and confirmed their identity.

Abstract

A new sesquiterpene, cyclonerodiol with properties closely resembling those of the Gibberella metabolite was isolated from a species of Trichothesium. Direct comparison of samples (infrared, proton magnetic resonance and mass spectra) established that the two substances were identical. Cyclonerodiol was labeled with approximately the same efficiency as the kaurenolides when cultures were supplemented with potassium (2-14C) DL-mevalonate. A scan of radioactivity after thinlayer chromatography of the neutral extract from such cultures showed one-fifth of the total radioactivity to be associated with the sesquiterpene.

Abstract

The known quinone pigments javanicin, bostrycoidin and fusarubin, and a new compound, (+)-solaniol, were isolated from cultures of Fusarium solani D2 purple. A quinonoid structure was assigned to (+)-solaniol on the basis of physical methods, and proven by synthesis of (racemic)-solaniol. (Author)

Abstract

An investigation of the carbonyl compounds formed from the ignition of cellulose nitrate was made. Isolated as the 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine derivatives were acetone, acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, methylglyoxal, glyoxal, mesoxaldehyde and hydroxypyruvaldehyde. A gas chromatographic study of the cellulose nitrate (cast from ethyl acetate) ignition products demonstrated the presence therein of acetaldehyde, acetone, acrolein, ethyl acetate, hydrogen cyanide and a now, unidentified substance which is not a carbonyl compound. Ethanol is not a product of ignition of cellulose nitrate. The origin of the compoundss isolated is discussed. (Author)
