2. Phylogeny and morphology of Glugea hertwigi from rainbow smelt Osmerus mordax found in Prince Edward Island, Canada.

Abstract

The article presents research on the infection by the microsporidian Glugea hertwigi of rainbow smelt, Osmerus mordax, in Prince Edward Island, Canada. Based on observations, there was a 24% prevalence of infection out of 187 examined fish captured in February and March 2009. Only mature pores were examined from the large and small xenomas of Glugea hertwigi observed within the submucosa of the gastrointestinal tract and along the mesentery of the host. Results showed that the affinity of the parasite to ovarian tissue may vary depending on host, parasite, or environmental factors.

4. A route to trinuclear platinum–gold clusters

Abstract

New A-frame cluster complexes have been prepared by addition of electrophilic gold fragments to the Pt—Pt bond of [Pt2Cl2(μ-ppm)2], dppm = Ph2PCH2PPh2. For example, [AuCl(SMe2)] gave [Pt2Cl2((μ-AuCl)((μ-dppm)2] and [Au(NO3) (PPh3)] gave [Pt2Cl2(μ-AuPPh3)(μ-dppm)2]NO3. The complexes [(CH2)n(PPh2AuBF4)2] reacted with [Pt2Cl2(μ-dppm)2] to give [Pt2Cl2(μ-AuPPh2(CH2)nPPh2AuCl)(μ-dppm)2]BF4when n = 1 or 2, but the bridged bis(A-frame) cluster complex [{Pt2Cl2(μ-dppm)2(μ-AuPPh2CH2)}2CH2](BF4)2when n = 3. In contrast, CuCl reacted with [Pt2Cl2(μ-dppm)2] to give [Pt2Cl(CuCl2)(μ-dppm)2]. Attempts to synthesize A-frame clusters containing Pt2Ag, Pt2Cu, Pd2Au, or PdPtAu units were unsuccessful, and it is concluded that these units are considerably weaker than the analogous 3-center 2-electron bond of the Pt2Au unit. The AuCl unit is displaced from [Pt2Cl2(μ-AuCl)(μ-dppm)2] on reaction with diazomethane, with formation of [Pt2Cl2(μ-CH2)(μ-dppm)2]. Keywords: platinum, gold, cluster, copper, silver.

5. SL(n+1, C) strata and orbits in the solution space of Euclidean CPn models

Abstract

We further study the action of SL(n+1, C) on the space of finite action solutions of the bidimensional Euclidean CPn models. We decompose the space of k-instantons into strata. Each stratum in characterized by an integer m with 0=m=min(k, n) which can be calculated from the instanton by purely algebraic means. The k-instantons with m=n are called generic. Their stratum is shown to be dense in the space of k-instantons when k=n. The isotropy subgroups for each stratum are identified.

6. Production of Bikaverin by 'Fusarium oxysporum' and Its Identity with Lycopersin

Abstract

The presence of a wine-red antiprotozoal metabolite in cultures of G. fujikuroi (F. moniliforme) and another Fusarium species was first described in 1970 by Balan and coworkers. Subsequently, Kjaer, Bu'lock and their collaborators, after extensive chemical investigations, have identified this substance with bikaverin, a fungal vacuolation factor discovered by Park and coworkers in aging cultures of F. oxysporum and F. oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici. Chemical and X-ray crystallographic evidence established the structure of bikaverin as I. Its resemblance to, and spite some discrepancies in the reported properties, its probable identity with lycopersin was noted. The authors have compared samples of lycopersin and bikaverin directly and confirmed their identity.

Abstract

A new sesquiterpene, cyclonerodiol with properties closely resembling those of the Gibberella metabolite was isolated from a species of Trichothesium. Direct comparison of samples (infrared, proton magnetic resonance and mass spectra) established that the two substances were identical. Cyclonerodiol was labeled with approximately the same efficiency as the kaurenolides when cultures were supplemented with potassium (2-14C) DL-mevalonate. A scan of radioactivity after thinlayer chromatography of the neutral extract from such cultures showed one-fifth of the total radioactivity to be associated with the sesquiterpene.

Abstract

The known quinone pigments javanicin, bostrycoidin and fusarubin, and a new compound, (+)-solaniol, were isolated from cultures of Fusarium solani D2 purple. A quinonoid structure was assigned to (+)-solaniol on the basis of physical methods, and proven by synthesis of (racemic)-solaniol. (Author)

Abstract

An investigation of the carbonyl compounds formed from the ignition of cellulose nitrate was made. Isolated as the 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine derivatives were acetone, acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, methylglyoxal, glyoxal, mesoxaldehyde and hydroxypyruvaldehyde. A gas chromatographic study of the cellulose nitrate (cast from ethyl acetate) ignition products demonstrated the presence therein of acetaldehyde, acetone, acrolein, ethyl acetate, hydrogen cyanide and a now, unidentified substance which is not a carbonyl compound. Ethanol is not a product of ignition of cellulose nitrate. The origin of the compoundss isolated is discussed. (Author)
