Abstract

We establish Krylov-Safonov type H\"older regularity theory for solutions to quite general discrete dynamic programming equations or equivalently discrete stochastic processes on random geometric graphs. Such graphs arise for example from data clouds in graph-based machine learning. The results actually hold to functions satisfying Pucci-type extremal inequalities, and thus we cover many examples including tug-of-war games on random geometric graphs. As an application we show that under suitable assumptions when the number of data points increases, the graph functions converge to a solution of a partial differential equation., Comment: 55 pages

Abstract

In this paper we study a class of Hardy--Sobolev type systems defined in $\mathbb{R}^N$ and coupled by a singular critical Hardy--Sobolev term. The main novelty of this work is that the orders of the singularities are independent and contained in a wide range. By means of variational techniques, we will prove the existence of positive bound and ground states for such a system. We obtain an asymptotic H\"older estimate for expectations of a quite general class of discrete stochastic processes. Such expectations can also be described as solutions to a dynamic programming principle or as solutions to discretized PDEs. The result, which is also generalized to functions satisfying Pucci-type inequalities for discrete extremal operators, is a counterpart to the Krylov-Safonov regularity result in PDEs. Abstract

We consider abstract inverse problems between infinite-dimensional Banach spaces. These inverse problems are typically nonlinear and ill-posed, making the inversion with limited and noisy measurements a delicate process. In this work, we assume that the unknown belongs to a finite-dimensional manifold: this assumption arises in many real-world scenarios where natural objects have a low intrinsic dimension and belong to a certain submanifold of a much larger ambient space. We prove uniqueness and H\"older and Lipschitz stability results in this general setting, also in the case when only a finite discretization of the measurements is available. Then, a Landweber-type reconstruction algorithm from a finite number of measurements is proposed, for which we prove global convergence, thanks to a new criterion for finding a suitable initial guess. These general results are then applied to several examples, including two classical nonlinear ill-posed inverse boundary value problems. The first is Calder\'on's inverse conductivity problem, for which we prove a Lipschitz stability estimate from a finite number of measurements for piece-wise constant conductivities with discontinuities on an unknown triangle. A similar stability result is then obtained for Gel'fand-Calder\'on's problem for the Schr\"odinger equation, in the case of piece-wise constant potentials with discontinuities on a finite number of non-intersecting balls., Comment: 70 pages, 5 figures. Abstract

Let $\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ be a bounded domain satisfying the uniform exterior cone condition. We establish existence and uniqueness of continuous solutions of the Dirichlet Problem associated to certain intrinsic nonlinear mean value properties in $\Omega $. Furthermore we show that, when properly normalized, such functions converge to the $p$-harmonic solution of the Dirichlet problem in $\Omega$, for $p\in[2,\infty)$. The proof of existence is constructive and the methods are entirely analytic, a fundamental tool being the construction of explicit, $p$-independent barrier functions in $\Omega$., Comment: 22 pages

Abstract

We obtain an asymptotic H\"older estimate for functions satisfying a dynamic programming principle arising from a so-called ellipsoid process. By the ellipsoid process we mean a generalization of the random walk where the next step in the process is taken inside a given space dependent ellipsoid. This stochastic process is related to elliptic equations in non-divergence form with bounded and measurable coefficients, and the regularity estimate is stable as the step size of the process converges to zero. Abstract

Accurate and reliable forecasting of cancellations is important for successful revenue management in the tourism industry. The objective of this study is to develop classification models to predict hotel booking cancellations. The work involves a number of key steps, such as data preprocessing to properly prepare the data; feature engineering to identify relevant attributes to help improve the predictive ability of the models; hyperparameter settings of the models, including choice of optimizers and incorporation of dropout layers to avoid overfitting in the neural networks; potential overfitting is evaluated using K‐fold cross‐validation; and performance is analysed using the confusion matrix and various performance metrics. The algorithms used are Multilayer Perceptron Neural Network, Radial Basis Function Neural Network, Deep Neural Network, Decision Tree Classifier, Random Forest Classifier, Ada Boost Classifier and XgBoost Classifier. Finally, the results of all models are compared, visualizing Deep Neural Network and XgBoost as the most suitable models for predicting hotel reservation cancellations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Se trata de un estudio de posibles relaciones familiares entre individuos datados en el periodo conocido como Cogotas I (>2900YBP), enterrados colectivamente empleando marcadores genéticos y software de uso forense convencional. La metodología empleada constituye una manera de objetivar los resultados., Background: This study relies on the discovery of two pit burials (LTA and LTB) of the Bronze Age Cogotas I archaeological culture (circa 3600–2950BP) in Spain. LTA was a single burial and LTB con- tained three skeletal remains of two adults and a newborn or foetus at term. Aim: The central question posed by this find was whether the LTB tomb constituted a traditional nuclear family (father, mother and son or daughter). Methods: Ancient and forensic DNA protocols were employed to obtain reliable results. Autosomal, X-STR markers and mitochondrial DNA were amplified. Subsequently, different kinship probabilities were estimated by means of LR values calculated using the Familias 3 software. Furthermore, an allelic dropout sensitivity test was developed in order to evaluate the influence of allelic dropout phenomena on the results. Results: It was possible to determine the molecular sex of all individuals and to establish a maternal relationship between the perinatal individual and one of the adults. Conclusion: The remains in the LTB tomb were not a traditional nuclear family (father, mother and son/daughter) and it was probably a tomb where two women, one of them pregnant, were buried., Antecedentes: Este estudio se basa en el descubrimiento de dos entierros en fosas (LTA y LTB) de la cultura arqueológica Cogotas I de la Edad del Bronce (alrededor de 3600-2950 a. C.) en España. LTA fue un entierro único y LTB contenía tres restos esqueléticos de dos adultos y un recién nacido o un feto a término. Objetivo: La pregunta central planteada por este hallazgo fue si la tumba de LTB constituía una familia nuclear tradicional (padre, madre e hijo o hija). Métodos: Se emplearon protocolos de ADN antiguos y forenses para obtener resultados confiables. Se amplificaron marcadores autosómicos, X-STR y ADN mitocondrial. Posteriormente se estimaron diferentes probabilidades de parentesco mediante valores de LR calculados mediante el software Familias 3. Además, se desarrolló una prueba de sensibilidad al abandono alélico para evaluar la influencia de los fenómenos de abandono alélico en los resultados. Resultados: Se logró determinar el sexo molecular de todos los individuos y establecer una relación materna entre el individuo perinatal y uno de los adultos. Abstract

We propose a new version of the tug-of-war game and a corresponding dynamic programming principle related to the p-Laplacian with 1 < p < 2. For this version, the asymptotic Hölder continuity of solutions can be directly derived from recent Krylov–Safonov type regularity results in the singular case. Moreover, existence of a measurable solution can be obtained without using boundary corrections. We also establish a comparison principle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Throughout history, it has been observed that human populations have buried the deceased members of their communities following different patterns. During the Copper Age and the Bronze Age—periods on which this study focuses—in the northern sub-plateau of the Iberian Peninsula, we identified different patterns of multiple or collective burial. This work analyzes a total of 58 individuals buried in different multiple or collective graves, to investigate whether the practice of these burials implies a family or biological link between individuals buried together. With this aim, STR markers of nuclear DNA were analyzed, as well as the hypervariable regions I and II of mitochondrial DNA, establishing both close kinship relationships and relationships through maternal lineage. We observed different burial patterns, detecting certain maternal lines preserved in some common burials maintained over time. Close family relationships were observed to a lesser extent, with some occasional exceptions. The results of the analysis formed the basis for a discussion on the concepts of family and community.
