We present a quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) study of the effect of tacticity on the local dynamics of polypropylene (PP). QENS measurements were carried out on different spectrometers. On IN10 (ILL, France) we have measured the decrease of the elastic intensity as a function of temperature for atactic (a-PP), isotactic (i-PP), and syndiotactic (s-PP) PP. The results show that the polyproylene sub-Tg dynamics is independent of tacticity. Measurements of the dynamic incoherent structure factor were carried out on the spectrometers IRIS and OSIRIS (ISIS, UK) and, after Fourier transform, the intermediate scattering functions were computed and analyzed. For all samples investigated, the intermediate scattering functions I(Q, t) show good overlap using shift factors that are close to those reported in the literature. Detailed analysis of the incoherent dynamic structure factor in terms of fast and slow decay processes indicates that in the picoseconds regime molecular motion is independent of tacticity. The slower segmental process depends on the sample stereoregularity and, consistently with 13 C NMR measurements and molecular dynamics simulations, isotactic PP relaxes faster than the other polymers, while s-PP is the slowest. Correlation times display a non-Arrhenius temperature dependence that is described by a Vogel– Fulcher–Tamman relationship, with parameters that depend on tacticity. Thus the ratio between the correlation times is temperature dependent, and while the dynamic behavior of the samples is very similar at 460 K, considerable differences are observed at lower temperature.

We report the first quasielastic neutron scattering measurements on a room temperature ionic liquid: 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, [bmim][PF6]. Data were collected using a medium resolution spectrometer as a function of temperature in the range 250–320 K. The dataunequivocally indicate the existence of two different relaxation processes: a fast, localized motion occurring in the subpicosecond range and a slower process spanning the subnanosecond regime. These results provide experimental support to recently published molecular dynamics simulations. Evidence for slower, unresolved dynamics (under the present experimental conditions) is also obtained. Both temperature and momentum transfer dependence of the intermediate incoherent dynamic structure factor were investigated, after Fourier transformation into the temporal domain. The fast process shows no appreciable Q- and T-dependence. On the other hand the slow process shows evidence of a complex, non-Debye and non-Arrhenius behavior.

The polymer segmental dynamics is investigated in a series of silica-filled rubbers. The presence of inert fillers in polymers greatly affects the mechanical and physical performance of the final materials. For example, silica has been proposed as a reinforcing agent of elastomers in tire production. Results from quasielastic neutron scattering and Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analysis (DMTA) measurements are presented on styrene-ran-butadiene rubber filled with silica. A clear indication is obtained of the existence of a bimodal dynamics, which can be rationalized in terms of the relaxation of bulk rubber and the much slower relaxation of the rubber adsorbed on the filler surface.

Salt doped poly ethylene oxide (PEO) mixtures were investigated by means of both small angle neutron scattering and QENS techniques aiming to characterize morphological and dynamical features in the melt state. These experimental evidences provide support to the proposed heterogeneous scenario for polymer electrolytes. In particular, the existence of PEO-cation complexes is proposed to play a major role in intramolecular cooperation and intermolecular transient crosslinks. which affects the mixture properties. The dynamics of polyisobutylene at 407 K is investigated by means of quasi-elastic neutron scattering. By proper data reduction, data from two different instruments were combined to provide the incoherent intermediate scattering function, I-s(Q,t), over 3 decades in time. The data were interpreted in terms of a superposition of exponentials with a distribution of characteristic times. The data provide an indication of the existence of three different relaxation processes in the time range between 0.1 and 1000 ps, thus confirming recent results from molecular dynamics simulations. The two fastest processes are spatially localized, while the slow one shows a momentum transfer dependence. Analysis in terms of the alternative phenomenological approach of stretched exponential is also discussed.

We report on SANS measurements carried out on the instrument SANS1 (V4) at the BENSC facility on solutions and composites of cellulose tricarbanilate (CTC). This cellulose derivative exhibits lyotropic behaviour in methylacrylate (MA). The SANS data indicate that in the isotropic liquid state (up to 25% wt CTC in MA) the CTC chains behave like rods of mass per unit length (M / L). In the liquid crystalline (LC) phase (at and above 35% wt CTC in MA), the Q dependence varies from Q(-1) to Q(-4), probably as a result of self-assembling of the CTC chains. The general aim of our work is to prepare molecular composites, i.e. miscible blends of rigid-rod and flexible-coil polymers, from CTC solutions in polymerizable media. To establish the degree of homogeneity of the composites, we performed SANS measurements on UV-cured CTC/MA solutions. Here, we compare the SANS data of CTC/monomer solutions with those of the corresponding composites.

Polymer dynamics in poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-salt mixtures is investigated by means of quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS). In a previous study, we reported QENS data from the NEAT spectrometer (BENSC) that evidenced, for the first time, a dynamic heterogeneity in PEO-salt mixtures induced by salt addition. This finding is supported by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations carried out by Borodin et al. In agreement with MD simulations, our QENS data revealed two distinct processes: a fast motion corresponding to the bulk polymer and a slower relaxation, which we attribute to formation of PEO-cation complexes. In this paper we present new QENS data from the high-resolution spectrometer IN16 that further support MD simulations as well as our previous data interpretation.
