This paper summarizes in depth the state of the art of aerial swarms, covering both classical and new reinforcement-learning-based approaches for their management. Then, it proposes a hybrid AI system, integrating deep reinforcement learning in a multi-agent centralized swarm architecture. The proposed system is tailored to perform surveillance of a specific area, searching and tracking ground targets, for security and law enforcement applications. The swarm is governed by a central swarm controller responsible for distributing different search and tracking tasks among the cooperating UAVs. Each UAV agent is then controlled by a collection of cooperative sub-agents, whose behaviors have been trained using different deep reinforcement learning models, tailored for the different task types proposed by the swarm controller. More specifically, proximal policy optimization (PPO) algorithms were used to train the agents' behavior. In addition, several metrics to assess the performance of the swarm in this application were defined. The results obtained through simulation show that our system searches the operation area effectively, acquires the targets in a reasonable time, and is capable of tracking them continuously and consistently.

[Abbreviated] Context: Studies of the LMC's internal kinematics have provided a detailed view of its structure, largely by the exquisite proper motion data supplied by Gaia. However, LoS velocities are only available for a small subset of Gaia data, limiting studies of the kinematics perpendicular to the LMC disc plane. Aims: We synergise new SDSS-IV/V LoS velocity measurements with Gaia data, increasing the 5D phase-space sample by almost a factor of three. We interpret and model the vertical structure and kinematics of the LMC disc. Methods: Split our sample into different stellar types. Then examine maps of vertical velocity moments perpendicular to the LMC disc. We interpret our results within three possible scenarios: 1) time-variability in the orientation of the disc symmetry axis; 2) use of an incorrect LMC disc plane orientation; or 3) the presence of warps or twists in the LMC disc. We also present a new method to construct a continuous 3D representation of the disc from spatially-resolved measurements of its viewing angles. Results: Using young stellar populations, we identify a region in the LMC arm with highly negative v_z'; this overlaps spatially with the supershell LMC 4. Our results indicate that: 1) the LMC viewing angles may vary with time, but this cannot explain most of the structure in v_z' maps; 2) when re-deriving the LMC disc plane by minimising the RMS vertical velocity v_z' across the disc, the inclination and line-of-nodes position angle are i ~ 24 degr and \Omega ~ 327 degr, respectively; 3) we obtain different inclinations for the inner and outer disc regions, and a quadrupolar variation with azimuth in outer the disc. We provide 3D models of the LMC disc shape. Conclusions: The combination of SDSS-IV/V and Gaia data reveal that the LMC disc is not a flat plane in equilibrium, but that the central bar region is tilted relative to a warped outer disc., Comment: Submitted to A&A. This paper considers the problem of analyzing the timing side-channel security of binary programs through decompilation and source-level analysis. We focus on two popular policies, namely constant-time and speculative constant-time, (S)CT for short, used to protect cryptographic libraries. First, we observe that popular decompilers remove (S)CT violations, i.e., transform non-(S)CT programs into (S)CT programs; it follows that analyzing decompiled programs is not sound. Second, we develop techniques to prove that decompilers are transparent, i.e., neither introduce nor remove (S)CT violations. Third, we apply our techniques to \refleCT{}, a core but non-trivial decompiler. As a contribution of independent interest, we find that constant-time verification tools may not be sound, due to their use of preprocessors (e.g.\, binary lifters or IR converters) that eliminate CT violations.

This work explores the potential of the Variational Quantum Eigensolver in solving Dynamic Portfolio Optimization problems surpassing the 100 qubit utility frontier. We systematically analyze how to scale this strategy in complexity and size, from 6 to 112 qubits, by testing different combinations of ansatz and optimizer on a real Quantum Processing Unit. We achieve best results when using a combination of a Differential Evolution classical optimizer and an ansatz circuit tailored to both the problem and the properties of the Quantum Processing Unit.

In this paper, we address the design of multi-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) precoders for indoor visible light communication (VLC) systems. The goal is to minimize the transmitted optical power per light emitting diode (LED) under imperfect channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter side. Robust precoders for imperfect CSI available in the literature include noisy and outdated channel estimation cases. However, to the best of our knowledge, no work has considered adding robustness against channel quantization. In this paper, we fill this gap by addressing the case of imperfect CSI due to the quantization of VLC channels. We model the quantization errors in the CSI through polyhedric uncertainty regions. For polyhedric uncertainty regions and positive real channels, as is the case of VLC channels, we show that the robust precoder against channel quantization errors that minimizes the transmitted optical power while guaranteeing a target signal to noise plus interference ratio (SNIR) per user is the solution of a second order cone programming (SOCP) problem. New results on the behavior of the double-mode RR Lyrae V338 Boo are presented. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) observed this star again in 2022, and an observing campaign of the American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO) was completed after the TESS observations as a follow-up. We find that the first overtone pulsation mode in this star completely disappears during the TESS observing window. This mode reappears at the end of the TESS observations, and the AAVSO observing campaign shows that in the months that followed, the first overtone mode was not only present, but was the dominant mode of pulsation. The Maslov index of a periodic orbit is an important piece in the semiclassical quantization of non-integrable systems, while almost all existing techniques that lead to a rigorous calculation of this index are elaborate and mathematically demanding. In this paper, we describe a straightforward technique, for systems with two degrees of freedom, based on the Lagrangian descriptors. We study the dynamical light emission from few-photon Fock states in waveguide-QED with a chiral two-level system. We first investigate the time dynamics of the system by calculating the emitter population and illustrate the breakdown of the weak excitation approximation, for both 1-photon and 2-photon excitation. We show how a 1-photon pulse yields a transmitted long-time spectrum that is identical to the input pulse, despite significant population effects. However, the dynamical spectra and spectral intensity show rich population effects. We also show the differences between 1-photon and 2-photon excitation, where the latter shows clear signatures of nonlinear saturation effects. We present a detailed quantum theory and simulations of a few-photon Fock state pulse interacting with a two-level system (TLS) in a waveguide. For a rectangular pulse shape, we present an exact temporal scattering theory for the waveguide-QED system to derive analytical expressions for the TLS population, for 1-photon and 2-photon pulses, for both chiral and symmetric emitters. We also derive the stationary (long time) and time-dependent spectra for 1 photon excitation, and show how these differ at a fundamental level when connecting to TLS population effects. Numerically, we also present matrix product state (MPS) simulations, which allow us to compute more general photon correlation functions for arbitrary quantum pulses, and we use this approach to also show results for Gaussian quantum pulses, and to confirm the accuracy of our analytical results. In addition, we show how significant population TLS effects also occur for pulses relatively long compared to the radiative decay time (showing that a weak excitation approximation cannot be made), and investigate the population signatures, nonlinear features and dynamical behavior as a function of pulse length. In this paper, we tackle the problem of localizing the source of a three-dimensional signal field with a team of mobile robots able to collect noisy measurements of its strength and share information with each other. The adopted strategy is to cooperatively compute a closed-form estimation of the gradient of the signal field that is then employed to steer the multi-robot system toward the source location. In order to guarantee an accurate and robust gradient estimation, the robots are placed on the surface of a sphere of fixed radius. More specifically, their positions correspond to the generators of a constrained Centroidal Voronoi partition on the spherical surface. We show that, by keeping these specific formations, both crucial geometric properties and a high level of field coverage are simultaneously achieved and that they allow estimating the gradient via simple analytic expressions. We finally provide simulation results to evaluate the performance of the proposed approach, considering both noise-free and noisy measurements. In particular, a comparative analysis shows how its higher robustness against faulty measurements outperforms an alternative state-of-the-art solution.

In this paper, we explore the feasibility of using machine learning regression as a method of extracting basic stellar parameters and line-of-sight extinctions from spectro-photometric data. We built a stable gradient-boosted random-forest regressor (xgboost), trained on spectroscopic data, capable of producing output parameters with reliable uncertainties from Gaia DR3 data (most notably the low-resolution XP spectra), without ground-based spectroscopic observations. Using Shapley additive explanations, we interpret how the predictions for each star are influenced by each data feature. For the training and testing of the network, we used high-quality parameters obtained from the StarHorse code for a sample of around eight million stars observed by major spectroscopic stellar surveys, complemented by curated samples of hot stars, very metal-poor stars, white dwarfs, and hot sub-dwarfs. The training data cover the whole sky, all Galactic components, and almost the full magnitude range of the Gaia DR3 XP sample of more than 217 million objects that also have reported parallaxes. We have achieved median uncertainties of 0.20 mag in V-band extinction, 0.01 dex in logarithmic effective temperature, 0.20 dex in surface gravity, 0.18 dex in metallicity, and $12\%$ in mass (over the full Gaia DR3 XP sample, with considerable variations in precision as a function of magnitude and stellar type). We succeeded in predicting competitive results based on Gaia DR3 XP spectra compared to classical isochrone or spectral-energy distribution fitting methods we employed in earlier works, especially for parameters $A_V$ and $T_{\rm eff}$, along with the metallicity values. Finally, we showcase some potential applications of this new catalogue, including extinction maps, metallicity trends in the Milky Way, and extended maps of young massive stars, metal-poor stars, and metal-rich stars). Accurate identification, localization, and segregation of teeth from Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) images are essential for analyzing dental pathologies. Modeling an individual tooth can be challenging and intricate to accomplish, especially when fillings and other restorations introduce artifacts. This paper proposes a method for automatically detecting, identifying, and extracting teeth from CBCT images. Our approach involves dividing the three-dimensional images into axial slices for image detection. Teeth are pinpointed and labeled using a single-stage object detector. Subsequently, bounding boxes are delineated and identified to create three-dimensional representations of each tooth. We present the "Spanish Built Factual Freectianary 2.0" (Spanish-BFF-2) as the second iteration of an AI-generated Spanish dictionary. Previously, we developed the inaugural version of this unique free dictionary employing GPT-3. In this study, we aim to improve the dictionary by using GPT-4-turbo instead. Furthermore, we explore improvements made to the initial version and compare the performance of both models.

Causality lies at the heart of scientific inquiry, serving as the fundamental basis for understanding interactions among variables in physical systems. Despite its central role, current methods for causal inference face significant challenges due to nonlinear dependencies, stochastic interactions, self-causation, collider effects, and influences from exogenous factors, among others. While existing methods can effectively address some of these challenges, no single approach has successfully integrated all these aspects. Here, we address these challenges with SURD: Synergistic-Unique-Redundant Decomposition of causality. SURD quantifies causality as the increments of redundant, unique, and synergistic information gained about future events from past observations. The formulation is non-intrusive and applicable to both computational and experimental investigations, even when samples are scarce. In this work, we analyze the evolution of the phase-space structures of KCN molecular system as a function of the vibrational energy using Lagrangian descriptors. For low energies, the motion is mostly regular around the absolute minimum of the potential energy surface. As the energy increases, the phase space combines regions with regular and chaotic motion, a difference that is well captured by the Lagrangian descriptors. We show that the dynamics is mostly governed by the invariant manifolds of the stretch periodic orbits located at the top of one of the energetic barriers of the system. Furthermore, we show a perfect agreement between the bifurcation theory and the differences observed in the phase-space structures as the vibrational energy is modified. Gravitational waves from black-hole merging events have revealed a population of extra-galactic BHs residing in short-period binaries with masses that are higher than expected based on most stellar evolution models - and also higher than known stellar-origin black holes in our Galaxy. It has been proposed that those high-mass BHs are the remnants of massive metal-poor stars. Gaia astrometry is expected to uncover many Galactic wide-binary systems containing dormant BHs, which may not have been detected before. The study of this population will provide new information on the BH-mass distribution in binaries and shed light on their formation mechanisms and progenitors. As part of the validation efforts in preparation for the fourth Gaia data release (DR4), we analysed the preliminary astrometric binary solutions, obtained by the Gaia Non-Single Star pipeline, to verify their significance and to minimise false-detection rates in high-mass-function orbital solutions. The astrometric binary solution of one source, Gaia BH3, implies the presence of a 32.70 \pm 0.82 M\odot BH in a binary system with a period of 11.6 yr. Gaia radial velocities independently validate the astrometric orbit. Broad-band photometric and spectroscopic data show that the visible component is an old, very metal-poor giant of the Galactic halo, at a distance of 590 pc. The BH in the Gaia BH3 system is more massive than any other Galactic stellar-origin BH known thus far. The low metallicity of the star companion supports the scenario that metal-poor massive stars are progenitors of the high-mass BHs detected by gravitational-wave telescopes. The Galactic orbit of the system and its metallicity indicate that it might belong to the Sequoia halo substructure. We present KRATOS, a comprehensive suite of 28 open access pure N-body simulations of isolated and interacting LMC-like galaxies, to study the formation of substructures in their disc after the interaction with an SMC-mass galaxy. The primary objective of this paper is to provide theoretical models that help interpreting the formation of general structures of an LMC-like galaxy under various tidal interaction scenarios. This is the first paper of a series that will be dedicated to the analysis of this complex interaction. Simulations are grouped in 11 sets of at most three configurations each containing: (1) a control model of an isolated LMC-like galaxy; (2) a model that contains the interaction with an SMC-mass galaxy, and; (3) the most realistic configuration where both an SMC-mass and MW-mass galaxies may interact with the LMC-like galaxy. In each simulation, we analyse the orbital history between the three galaxies and examine the morphological and kinematic features of the LMC-like disc galaxy throughout the interaction. This includes investigating the disc scale height and velocity maps. When a bar develops, our analysis involves characterising its strength, length, off-centeredness and pattern speed. The diverse outcomes found in the KRATOS simulations, including the presence of bars, warped discs, or various spiral arm shapes (along with the high spatial, temporal, and mass resolution used), demonstrate their capability to explore a range of LMC-like galaxy morphologies. Those directly correspond to distinct disc kinematic maps, making them well-suited for a first-order interpretation of the LMC's kinematic maps. From the simulations we note that tidal interactions can: boost the disc scale height; both destroy and create bars, and; naturally explain the off-center stellar bars. We introduce a closure model for wall-modeled large-eddy simulation (WMLES), referred to as the Building-block Flow Model (BFM). The foundation of the model rests on the premise that a finite collection of simple flows encapsulates the essential physics necessary to predict more complex scenarios. The BFM is implemented using artificial neural networks and introduces five advancements within the framework of WMLES: (1) It is designed to predict multiple flow regimes (wall turbulence under zero, favorable, adverse mean-pressure-gradient, and separation); (2) It unifies the closure model at solid boundaries (i.e., the wall model) and the rest of the flow (i.e., the subgrid-scale model) into a single entity; (3) It ensures consistency with numerical schemes and gridding strategy by accounting for numerical errors; (4) It is directly applicable to arbitrary complex geometries; (5) It can be scaled up to model additional flow physics in the future if needed (e.g., shockwaves and laminar-to-turbulent transition). The BFM is utilized to predict key quantities of interest in turbulent channel and pipe flows, a Gaussian bump, a simplified aircraft, and a realistic aircraft in landing configuration. In all cases, the BFM demonstrates similar or superior capabilities in terms of accuracy and computational efficiency compared to previous state-of-the-art closure models.

Radio advertising remains an integral part of modern marketing strategies, with its appeal and potential for targeted reach undeniably effective. However, the dynamic nature of radio airtime and the rising trend of multiple radio spots necessitates an efficient system for monitoring advertisement broadcasts. This study investigates a novel automated radio advertisement detection technique incorporating advanced speech recognition and text classification algorithms. RadIA's approach surpasses traditional methods by eliminating the need for prior knowledge of the broadcast content. This contribution allows for detecting impromptu and newly introduced advertisements, providing a comprehensive solution for advertisement detection in radio broadcasting. Experimental results show that the resulting model, trained on carefully segmented and tagged text data, achieves an F1-macro score of 87.76 against a theoretical maximum of 89.33. This paper provides insights into the choice of hyperparameters and their impact on the model's performance. This study demonstrates its potential to ensure compliance with advertising broadcast contracts and offer competitive surveillance. This groundbreaking research could fundamentally change how radio advertising is monitored and open new doors for marketing optimization.

An $n$-player game $X$ in normal form can be modeled via undirected discrete graphical models where the discrete random variables represent the players and their state spaces are the set of pure strategies. There exists an edge between the vertices of the graphical model whenever there is a dependency between the associated players. We study the Spohn conditional independence (CI) variety $\mathcal{V}_{X,\mathcal{C}}$, which is the intersection of the independence model $\mathcal{M}_{\mathcal{C}}$ with the Spohn variety of the game $X$. We prove a conjecture by the first author and Sturmfels that $\mathcal{V}_{X,\mathcal{C}}$ is of codimension $n$ in $\mathcal{M}_{\mathcal{C}}$ for a generic game $X$ with binary choices. We show that the set of totally mixed CI equilibria i.e., the restriction of the Spohn CI variety to the open probability simplex is a smooth semialgebraic manifold for a generic game $X$ with binary choices. Not all the information in a turbulent field is relevant for understanding particular regions or variables in the flow. Here, we present a method for decomposing a source field into its informative $\boldsymbol{\Phi}_I(\boldsymbol{x},t)$ and residual $\boldsymbol{\Phi}_R(\boldsymbol{x},t)$ components relative to another target field. The method is referred to as informative and non-informative decomposition (IND). All the necessary information for physical understanding, reduced-order modelling, and control of the target variable is contained in $\boldsymbol{\Phi}_I(\boldsymbol{x},t)$, whereas $\boldsymbol{\Phi}_R(\boldsymbol{x},t)$ offers no substantial utility in these contexts. The decomposition is formulated as an optimisation problem that seeks to maximise the time-lagged mutual information of the informative component with the target variable while minimising the mutual information with the residual component. The method is applied to extract the informative and residual components of the velocity field in a turbulent channel flow, using the wall-shear stress as the target variable. We demonstrate the utility of IND in three scenarios: (i) physical insight of the effect of the velocity fluctuations on the wall-shear stress, (ii) prediction of the wall-shear stress using velocities far from the wall, and (iii) development of control strategies for drag reduction in a turbulent channel flow using opposition control.

We present our optical photometric observations of the 2022 eruption of the recurrent nova U Scorpii (U Sco) using 49,152 data points over 70 d following the optical peak. We have also analyzed its soft X-ray (0.3--1 keV) light curve by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. During the 2022 eruption, the optical plateau stage started 13.8--15.0 d and ended 23.8--25.0 d after the optical peak. The soft X-ray stage started 14.6--15.3 d and ended 38.7--39.5 d after the optical peak. Both stages started later and had shorter durations, and the soft X-ray light curve peaked earlier and was less luminous compared to those during the U Sco 2010 eruption. These points suggest that there were differences in the envelope mass between the different cycles of the nova eruption. Furthermore, we have analyzed the optical eclipses during the 2022 eruption. The primary eclipse was first observed 10.4--11.6 d after the optical peak, earlier than the beginning of the optical plateau stage. This sequence of events can be explained by the receding ejecta photosphere associated with the expanding nova ejecta. We have determined the ingress and egress phases of the primary eclipses and estimated the outer radius of the optical light source centered at the white dwarf (WD). During the optical plateau stage, the source radius remained $\sim$1.2 times larger than the Roche volume radius of the primary WD, being close to the L1 point. When the optical plateau stage ended, the source radius drastically shrank to the tidal truncation radius within a few orbital periods. The Nuclear Stellar Disk has been a highly active star-forming region in the Milky Way for approximately the last 30 million years. Despite hosting prominent clusters like Arches, Quintuplet, and Nuclear Stellar, their combined mass is less than 10% of the expected stellar mass, leading to the "missing cluster problem." Various factors, including high stellar density and tidal forces, contribute to this absence of clusters. Traces of dissolving clusters may exist as co-moving groups of stars, shedding light on the region's star formation history. Our analysis, utilizing integral field spectroscopy and astrophotometric data, reveals a group of young stellar objects in the NSD sharing velocities and positions, potentially indicating remnants of dissolved clusters or stellar associations. This finding contributes valuable insights into the understanding of the missing clusters problem in the Galactic center.

Eigenlevel correlation diagrams has proven to be a very useful tool to understand eigenstate characteristics of classically chaotic systems. In particular, we showed in a previous publication [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 944 (1998)] how to unveil the scarring mechanism, a cornerstone in the theory of quantum chaos, using the Planck constant as the correlation parameter. By increasing Planck constant, we induced a transition from order to chaos, in which scarred wavefunctions appeared as the interaction of pairs of eigenstates in broad avoided crossings, forming a well defined frontier in the correlation diagram. In this paper, we demonstrate that this frontier can be obtained by means of the semiclassical quantization of the involved scarring periodic orbits. Additionally, in order to calculate the Maslov index of each scarring periodic orbit, which is necessary for the semiclassical quantization procedure, we introduce a novel straightforward method based on Lagrangian descriptors. Context: The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) internal kinematics have been studied in unprecedented depth thanks to the excellent quality of the Gaia mission data, revealing the disc's non-axisymmetric structure. Aims: We want to constrain the LMC bar pattern speed using the astrometric and spectroscopic data from the Gaia mission. Methods: We apply three methods to evaluate the bar pattern speed: it is measured through the Tremaine-Weinberg (TW) method, the Dehnen method and a bisymmetric velocity (BV) model. The methods provide additional information on the bar properties such as the corotation radius and the bar length and strength. The validity of the methods is tested with numerical simulations. Results: A wide range of pattern speeds are inferred by the TW method, owing to a strong dependency on the orientation of the galaxy frame and the viewing angle of the bar perturbation. The simulated bar pattern speeds (corotation radii, respectively) are well recovered by the Dehnen method (BV model). Applied to the LMC data, the Dehnen method finds a pattern speed Omega_p = -1.0 +/- 0.5 km s-1 kpc-1, thus corresponding to a bar which barely rotates, slightly counter-rotating with respect to the LMC disc. The BV method finds a LMC bar corotation radius of Rc = 4.20 +/- 0.25 kpc, corresponding to a pattern speed Omega_p = 18.5^{+1.2}_{-1.1} km s-1 kpc-1. Conclusions: It is not possible to decide which global value best represents an LMC bar pattern speed with the TW method, due to the strong variation with the orientation of the reference frame. The non-rotating bar from the Dehnen method would be at odds with the structure and kinematics of the LMC disc. The BV method result is consistent with previous estimates and gives a bar corotation-to-length ratio of 1.8 +/- 0.1, which makes the LMC hosting a slow bar., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures
