2. Effect of the spectral power distribution on visual performance of subjects implanted with intraocular lenses with or without a blue light-filter under night-driving conditions.

Abstract

In old subjects, the effect on visual performance of the interaction between the spectral power distribution of street lamps and the different types of intraocular lenses (IOLs) is unknown. Contrast threshold (CT) and reaction time (RT) were analysed in off-axis vision at mesopic illumination conditions provided by high-pressure sodium and metal-halide lamps, using a Maxwellian view optical system. Four groups of subjects participated: 10 young subjects, 20 elderly subjects with cataracts and the same subjects after cataract surgery were divided into two groups, 10 subjects implanted with a blue light-filtering and 10 subjects with a non-blue light-filtering IOL (NBIOL). Age-related cataract impairs detection and reaction capabilities; tasks that are nevertheless improved after surgery. The type of lamp does not affect both tasks in the case of the blue light-filtering IOL group, but it does in the NBIOL group. When comparing the two lenses, no detrimental effect of the blue light filter is observed in both tasks. In conclusion, at representative night-driving conditions, the spectral power distribution of the street lamp does not have a clinically relevant effect on visual tasks such as CT and visual RT in pseudophakic subjects, regardless of the type of IOL implanted. Abstract

A new generation of chiral gold(I) catalysts based on variations of complexes with JohnPhos-type ligands with a remote C2-symmetric 2,5-diarylpyrrolidine have been synthesized with different substitutions at the top and bottom aryl rings: from replacing the phosphine by a N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) to increasing the steric hindrance with bis- or tris-biphenylphosphine scaffolds, or by directly attaching the C2-chiral pyrrolidine in the ortho-position of the dialkylphenyl phosphine. The new chiral gold(I) catalysts have been tested in the intramolecular [4+2] cycloaddition of arylalkynes with alkenes and in the atroposelective synthesis of 2-arylindoles. Interestingly, simpler catalysts with the C2-chiral pyrrolidine in the ortho-position of the dialkylphenyl phosphine led to the formation of opposite enantiomers. The chiral binding pockets of the new catalysts have been analyzed by DFT calculations. As revealed by non-covalent interaction plots, attractive non-covalent interactions between substrates and catalysts direct specific enantioselective folding. Furthermore, we have introduced the open-source tool NEST, specifically designed to account for steric effects in cylindrical-shaped complexes, which allows predicting experimental enantioselectivities in our systems.© 2023 The Authors. 5. Effect of Correlated Color Temperature and S/P-ratio of LED Light Sources on Reaction Time in Off-axis Vision and Mesopic Lighting Levels.

Abstract

The increasing replacement of traditional lamps by LED technology opens the door to research into visual performance under their multiple possible spectral power distributions. The correlated color temperature and S/P-ratio are considered parameters characterizing the spectrum of a light source. The lack of firm conclusions motivates the analysis in this work of the influence of LED spectrum, which is defined by the correlated color temperature and S/P-ratio, on a representative night-driving task, visual reaction time. A two-channel and four primaries photostimulator was used as set-up for measuring reaction time in off-axis vision, at mesopic illumination conditions and for a range of stimulus contrasts. The experimental conditions included a wide range of correlated color temperatures, ranging from 1870 to 6350 K, and different S/P-ratios for the same temperature. A total of 16 young subjects participated in the experiments. The results show significant shorter reaction times for those conditions in which the spectrum has greater short-wavelength content. This is corroborated by the greater stimulation of rods and S-cones obtained in the calculation of their excitation level. However, the definition of the spectrum using the correlated color temperature and S/P-ratio does not equally define the results obtained. For the same temperature, a higher S/P-ratio provides lower reaction time values, but for the same S/P ratio reaction time is independent of the temperature. LED light sources with high short-wavelength content provide faster response on the basis of a greater excitation of rods and S-cones. The S/P-ratio is the best parameter to justify the effect of spectrum on reaction time, as considers the spectral sensitivity of the visual system in its calculation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OBJECTIVES: SLE patients have an enhanced risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. However, the increased prevalence of cardiovascular disease is not fully explained by traditional Framingham cardiovascular risk factors. Specific features of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particles, other than plasma concentration, may induce accelerated atherosclerosis at early stages in these patients. Thus, we aimed to explore the impact of LDL from both active and inactive SLE patients on human aortic endothelial cells. METHODS: Human aortic endothelial cells were stimulated with the same concentration of LDL particles isolated from pooled serum that was collected from 13 SLE patients during both active and inactive states. Gene expression and cell migration assays were performed. RESULTS: Circulating LDL particles obtained from healthy volunteers and SLE patients in both remission and flare states were comparable in terms of number, cholesterol and triglyceride content, and net electric charge. Stimulation of cells with LDL from active SLE patients induced the expression of vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (∼2.0-fold, P < 0.05), monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (∼2.0-fold, P < 0.05) and matrix metallopeptidase 2 (∼1.6-fold, P < 0.01) compared with cells stimulated with LDL from inactive SLE patients. Additionally, LDL extracted from active patients increased cell migration in a wound-healing assay (1.4-fold, P < 0.05). 11. Design and simulation of a grid-connected PV system for self-consumption

Abstract

Although Spain is one of the countries with the highest incidence of solar irradiance in Europe, in many areas of the country PV technology is not fully deployed. This thesis is focused on designing and assessing through a simulation software the performance of a grid-connected PV system for selfconsumption installed on a building’s rooftop in a location with a high solar potential unused. An in-depth search on photovoltaic literature was made in order to gain information on the field, as well as on the grid code requirements in both Europe and Spain. Then, a prospection to find the proper location for the installation was done. Afterwards, a load profile was created to know the building’s energy demand, and finally the technology to implement was chosen and sized. With these premises, a CAD 3D model of the building and surrounding elements was implemented into a simulation software (PVsyst). This allowed to create the PV layout, to find the most accurate values for the parameters to optimize the performance of the system (tilt angle, azimuth, and row spacing), and to develop a shading and loss analysis. The first scenarios were further refined with an additional simulation which took into account a storage system, providing a final scenario. Finally, an economic study was performed. The system renders an annual energy production of 20,38 MWh/year, an annual specific yield of 1.742 kWh/kWp with a performance ratio of 79,3%, which cover the household’s demand with an estimate saving of 2.635,8 €/a and 3409 tCO2/a emitted to the atmosphere. The study showed the system to be effective and economically viable and profitable, and also provides a design guide for grid-connected PV systems for self-consumption.

12. CA19-9 capability as predictor of pancreatic cancer resectability in a Spanish cohort

Abstract

CA19-9 serum has been suggested as a marker of unresectability but different cut-off levels have been published. A cut-off of 500 U/ml is currently considered in an international consensus as biological criteria of borderline resectable pancreatic adenocarcinoma. To evaluate whether serum CA19-9 threshold of 500 U/ml could be adequate predictor of resectability in pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Multicenter, observational, prospective study performed in Spain including 203 patients diagnosed with pancreatic adenocarcinoma. 43 (21.2%) cases were resectable and 160 (78.8%) unresectable. Among the 176 preoperative CA19-9 available values, 98 (58.3%) were 500 U/ml. Resectability rate in those patients with CA19-9 500 U/ml. Statistical model to predict resectability based on CA19-9 provide an AUC of 0.6618 (95% CI 0.53-0.83) when only CA19-9 values > 500 U/ml are studied. Serum levels of CA19-9 higher than 500 U/ml are indicative of unresectable disease, however reduced sensitivity and specificity lead to a limited clinical applicability for resectability.

13. A novel serum metabolomic profile for the differential diagnosis of distal cholangiocarcinoma and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma

Abstract

The diagnosis of adenocarcinomas located in the pancreas head, i.e., distal cholangiocarcinoma (dCCA) and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), constitutes a clinical challenge because they share many symptoms, are not easily distinguishable using imaging techniques and accurate biomarkers are not available. Searching for biomarkers with potential usefulness in the differential diagnosis of these tumors, we have determined serum metabolomic profiles in healthy controls and patients with dCCA, PDAC or benign pancreatic diseases (BPD). Ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS) analysis was performed in serum samples from dCCA (n = 34), PDAC (n = 38), BPD (n = 42) and control (n = 25) individuals, divided into discovery and validation cohorts. This approach permitted 484 metabolites to be determined, mainly lipids and amino acids. The analysis of the results led to the proposal of a logistic regression model able to discriminate patients with dCCA and PDAC (AUC value of 0.888) based on the combination of serum levels of nine metabolites (acylcarnitine AC(16:0), ceramide Cer(d18:1/24:0), phosphatidylcholines PC(20:0/0:0) and PC(O-16:0/20:3), lysophosphatidylcholines PC(20:0/0:0) and PC(0:0/20:0), lysophosphatidylethanolamine PE(P-18:2/0:0), and sphingomyelins SM(d18:2/22:0) and SM(d18:2/23:0)) and CA 19-9. In conclusion, we propose a novel specific panel of serum metabolites that can help in the differential diagnosis of dCCA and PDAC. Further validation of their clinical usefulness in prospective studies is required.

Entre els propòsits de millora del vehicle s’incloïa pal·liar els problemes que els cotxes anteriors presentaven en el tren de potència, com ara el sobreescalfament de les bateries o la dificultat per a manipular-les, raó per la qual es va decidir crear una bateria totalment nova, tant a nivell elèctric com electrònic i mecànic. Aquest Treball de Fi de Grau, descriu el procés de disseny i manufactura de les dues caixes de bateries, una primera d’alumini i la segona de monolític de fibra de carboni, que es van fabricar durant la temporada. El procés va requerir un estudi intensiu de tota la normativa FSAE, seguit del estudi de materials candidats, la definició de la geometria final de la caixa de bateries i els assaigs de provetes dels materials escollits, els càlculs dels adhesivats i de les unions cargolades de la peça, la simulació numèrica per a detectar les zones més crítiques de les solucions constructives i, finalment, un estudi econòmic i un estudi d’impacte ambiental. Com a resultat es va obtenir una segona caixa de bateries, que amb la integració dels materials compostos, gaudia d’una robustesa i fiabilitat més altes que les de la caixa d’alumini, comportant alhora una reducció de pes important. Els bons resultats a nivell estructural de la bateria amb el CAT10e sobre l’asfalt, juntament amb l’aprovació dels jutges de les competicions d’Àustria, Alemanya i Espanya a les que va competir, van validar per a l’equip l’ús dels materials compostos en el tren de potència, i van assentar una metodologia de disseny que servirà per a ésser refinada i millorar així el vehicle en futures temporades.

Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Agronómica, Alimentaria y de Biosistemas El objetivo de este trabajo es identificar los factores que influyen en la decisión del estudiante al elegir los estudios universitarios que va a cursar. En concreto, el análisis se centra en los grados en el área agroalimentaria como primera o segunda opción en la preinscripción que se realiza previa a la matrícula en la universidad. Para la consecución de este objetivo se ha realizado una encuesta personal a una muestra de 430 estudiantes de la Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Agronómica, Alimentaria y de Biosistemas de la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. Los resultados obtenidos mediante la técnica del análisis factorial muestran que los factores que determinan la elección de los grados en el área agroalimentaria son el lugar de residencia, el momento en el que se realiza la elección, el itinerario seguido anteriormente y la motivación personal del estudiante. Abstract

The purpose of this work is to analyze the interaction between the spectral transmittance of old-aged subjects, before and after cataract surgery and blue light-filtering intraocular lens implantation, and the spectral power distribution of common street lamps, under conditions typical of nighttime driving. We analyzed contrast threshold and visual reaction time in off-axis vision at different mesopic illumination conditions provided by high-pressure sodium and metal halide lamps. Three groups of subjects with different spectral transmittances participated: young subjects as control group, old-aged subjects with senile cataracts and the same subjects after cataract surgery and blue light-filtering IOL implantation. A clear interaction appears between the spectral power distribution and the spectral transmittance, depending on the visual task. Transparent ocular media allow benefiting from the greater short-wavelength content of the halide lamp. However, cataracts increase contrast threshold and visual reaction time values and also affects how the spectral power distribution influences these visual tasks. After surgery and intraocular lens implantation, visual performance improves for both lamps and the blue light-filter seems to influence spectral transmittance, which affects visual performance under light provided by greater short-wavelength content lamps. Cataract surgery is responsible for an improvement in contrast threshold and visual reaction time tasks, though blue light-filtering of the intraocular lens seems to prevent the visual system from benefiting from lamps with greater emission at short wavelengths. L’estudi que es realitza en aquest projecte/treball final de carrera queda englobat dins del grup de recerca MICE (Modal Intervals Control and Engeneering), el qual realitza investigacions entorn al control de glucèmia. Aquest grup de recerca vinculat a la Universitat de Girona col•labora amb l’Hospital Universitari Dr. Josep Trueta de Girona. La temàtica principal tractarà de realitzar el control de glucèmia en pacients crítics, que es troben ingressats en la unitat de cures intensives de qualsevol hospital. Com a conseqüència d’aquesta problemàtica, s’ha implementat en un entorn virtual, un pacient el qual simula la situació d’un pacient real en la unitat de cures intensives. El model emprat per a la obtenció del model de pacient virtual és el desenvolupat per Chase et al. Abstract

This work discusses the relative significance of optical and neural mechanisms in letter contrast sensitivity under different conditions of environmental lighting. A study was carried out on 26 eyes with normal ocular health. Sixteen lighting conditions were obtained by combining different test luminances (from 10 cd/m2 to 600 cd/m2) and surround luminances (from 1 cd/m2 to 600 cd/m2). The results reveal a significant influence of optical factors (pupil size variations and glare effects) on contrast sensitivity when surround luminance changes, and a dominance of neural effects when test luminance changes. Furthermore, test size and illumination conditions are identified for which letter threshold contrasts are not sensitive to surround luminance changes. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

The influence of lighting of different spectral power distribution on letter contrast sensitivity has been studied. The different spectral power distributions were obtained by filtering or dimming tungsten halogen lamps. Measurements were made on 20 young and healthy individuals (25 eyes) whose monocular contrast sensitivities were measured with a natural pupil. Sixteen combinations of test and surround luminance with high or low correlated colour temperatures were studied in such a way that the influence of test luminance, surround luminance or colour temperature of both visual fields could be independently studied. Abstract

An analytical method for the determination of aflatoxin B 1 in a tiger nut-based soft drinks named ‘horchata’ is described. The method is based on an immunoaffinity clean-up, followed by HPLC separation and fluorescence detection after electrochemical post-column derivatization. The detection limit ( S / N ?=?3) and the quantification limit ( S / N ?=?10) were 0.02 and 0.06?µg?kg -1 , respectively. The mean recovery at a level of 2?µg?l -1 was 88% ( n ?=?6) and the coefficient of variation was 9%. The method was applied to conduct a small market survey for a beverage named ‘horchata’ that is frequently consumed by parts of the population in Southern Europe. Twenty-two samples from Spanish and Belgian supermarkets were analysed. As a result, only one sample was found to contain aflatoxin B 1 at the limit of quantitation of the method. Plasma levels of 8-methoxypsoralen (8-MOP) were determined by high-pressure liquid chromatography in 19 patients with psoriasis who were receiving bath-PUVA treatment, at different time points after the psoralen bath. The levels of 8-MOP varied between <5ng/ml (lower limit of detection) and 34 ng/ml, and we found a relationship between the plasma psoralen levels and the severity of the disease.
