Northeastern Siberia has been inhabited by humans for more than 40,000 years but its deep population history remains poorly understood. Here we investigate the late Pleistocene population history of northeastern Siberia through analyses of 34 newly recovered ancient genomes that date to between 31,000 and 600 years ago. We document complex population dynamics during this period, including at least three major migration events: an initial peopling by a previously unknown Palaeolithic population of 'Ancient North Siberians' who are distantly related to early West Eurasian hunter-gatherers; the arrival of East Asian-related peoples, which gave rise to 'Ancient Palaeo-Siberians' who are closely related to contemporary communities from far-northeastern Siberia (such as the Koryaks), as well as Native Americans; and a Holocene migration of other East Asian-related peoples, who we name 'Neo-Siberians', and from whom many contemporary Siberians are descended. Each of these population expansions largely replaced the earlier inhabitants, and ultimately generated the mosaic genetic make-up of contemporary peoples who inhabit a vast area across northern Eurasia and the Americas.

The Carrington event of 1859 has been the strongest solar flare in the observational history. It plays a crucial role in shedding light on the frequency and impacts of the past and future Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) events on human societies. We address the impact of the Carrington event by measuring tree‐ring 14C with multiple replications from high‐latitude locations around the event and by comparing them with mid‐latitude measurements. A transient offset in 14C following the event is observed with high statistical significance. Our state‐of‐the‐art 14C production and transport model does not reproduce the observational finding, suggesting features beyond present understanding. Particularly, our observation would require partially fast transport of 14C between the stratosphere and troposphere at high latitudes. The observation is consistent with the previous findings with the SEP events of 774 and 993 CE for which faster integration of 14C into tree rings is observed at high latitudes. Plain Language Summary: Strong Earth‐directed solar eruptions can cause 14C concentration spikes in the atmosphere. Large enough events may leave a signal in the annually grown tree‐rings as they capture the isotopic carbon fingerprint through photosynthesis. Such rapid 14C increases have been detected, for instance, starting in years 774 and 993 CE. However, no increase has been observed following the Carrington event of 1859, despite it being the largest solar eruption of the modern era. Notably, all prior 14C measurements covering the Carrington event come from mid‐latitude trees. To achieve a broader geographical coverage, we have measured the event from several high‐latitude locations. After comparing the high‐ and mid‐latitude measurements, we have found a statistically significant difference lasting for several years post‐Carrington. To better understand the difference, we have adopted a 14C production and atmospheric transport model capable of simulating regional differences. Despite the improved model, we found it unable to reproduce the observational results, which suggests features beyond current understanding. Ultimately, the observation emphasizes the role of subtle 14C differences in tree‐ring 14C studies, potentially opening new ways to study past solar phenomena and atmospheric dynamics. Termites are a significant natural source of greenhouse gases (GHGs), but quantifying emissions especially from large termite mounds is problematic as they rarely fit in measurement chambers. Predicting fluxes based on internal and atmospheric concentrations could provide an indirect way to assess mound emissions, but developing such models necessitates better understanding of the concentration levels and their variance.We used gas chromatography to measure carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) concentrations within nests of two co‐occurring species of fungus‐growing termites in both dry and wet seasons in Kenya, with termite Macrotermes michaelseni building mounds with a closed and Macrotermes subhyalinus with an open ventilation system.Gas concentrations were 3–100 times higher in mounds than the global averages in atmosphere, implying that termite mounds are sources of all three GHGs. Carbon dioxide concentrations were higher in closed than in open mounds. Methane concentrations remained constant in open mounds, whereas closed mounds exhibited considerable variation between nests and across seasons. Concentrations of both CH4 and N2O correlated positively with mound volume during the wet season, whereas interactions with mound size were not observed in CO2 concentrations or during the driest sampling period.These findings underline that among fungus‐growing termites, mound size, ventilation type and precipitation affect nest gas concentrations and with this likely the magnitude of mound GHG emissions. The sedimentary environment, sediment characteristics and age-depth models of sediment sequences from Arctic lakes Revvatnet and Svartvatnet, located near the Polish Polar Station in Hornsund, southern Svalbard (77°N), were studied with a view to establishing a basis for paleolimnological climate and environmental reconstructions. The results indicate that catchment-to-lake hydroclimatic processes probably affect the transportation, distribution and accumulation of sediments in different parts of lakes Revvatnet and Svartvatnet. Locations with continuous and essentially stable sedimentary environments were found in both lakes between water depths of 9 and 26 m. We used several different dating techniques, including 137Cs, 210Pb, AMS 14C, and paleomagnetic dating, to provide accurate and secured sediment chronologies. Arecovered sequence from the northern basin of Revvatnet spans more than one thousand years long with laminated stratigraphy in the upper part of the sediment. Based on AMS 14C dates, it is possible to suppose that Revvatnet basin was not occupied by a valley glacier during the Little Ice Age. The dates were supported by 137Cs chronologies, but not confirmed with other independent dating methods that extent beyond the last 50 years. A sedimentary sequence from the northern basin of Svartvatnet provides a potential archive for the study of climate and environmental change for the last ca. 5000 years. Based on the stratigraphy and a Bayesian age-depth model of AMS14C and paleosecular variation (PSV) dates, the recovered sediment sections represent a continuous and stable sedimentation for the latter half of the Holocene.

Termites play an essential role in decomposing dead plant material in tropical ecosystems and are thus major sources of gaseous C emissions in many environments. In African savannas, fungus-growing termites are among the ecologically most influential termite species. We studied the gas exchange from mounds of two closely related fungus-growing species (Macrotermes subhyalinus and M. michaelseni, respectively) in shaded and open habitats together with soil fluxes around the mounds. The fluxes from active termite mounds varied from 116 to 2105 mg CO2-C m-2 h-1 for CO2 and from 0.06 to 3.66 mg CH4-C m-2 h-1 for CH4 fluxes. Mound CO2 fluxes varied seasonally with a 64 % decrease and 35 % increase in the fluxes from dry to wet season at the open grassland and shaded bushland sites, respectively. During the wet season, the CO2 fluxes were significantly correlated with termite mound volume. The diurnal measurements from two M. michaelseni mounds suggest that the gas fluxes peak during daytime and midnight supporting the previously presented model of thermally driven air circulation inside the mound and possibly enhanced ventilation during the night by the opening of foraging routes. The stability of the mound gas fluxes over diurnal and annual scales coincides with the constant nature of the nest internal gas and thermal environment that guarantees continuously favorable conditions for the fungal symbiont. Soil fluxes of both CO2 and CH4 were enhanced at up to 2 m distance from the mounds compared to the local soil respiration, indicating that, in addition to mound ventilation structures, a small proportion of the produced metabolic gases leave the nest also via surrounding soils. The movements of terminal Pleistocene and Holocene mammoths on Wrangel Island, off northeastern Siberia, were investigated using the isotopic composition of Sr in skeletal remains. A significant shift toward more radiogenic [sup.87]Sr/[sup.86]Sr ratios, from 0.71218 [+ or -] 0.00103 to 0.71491 [+ or -] 0.00138 in bioapatite, marks the beginning of the Holocene. The higher Sr isotope values in mid-Holocene mammoth remains are interpreted as an influence of radiogenic Sr derived from the Neoproterozoic rocks in the central part of Wrangel Island. The shift implies a change in the ranging and feeding areas of the animals, ultimately reflecting the inundation of the mainland connection and isolation of the population. The shift indicates also that the late Pleistocene animals were not permanent occupants in the territory that makes up present-day Wrangel Island.

We explored the diets in three populations (Iin Hamina, Oulu, Rauma) dating between the late Middle Ages and mid-19th century. We compared diets of mid-childhood, adolescence, and adulthood based on the carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios in dentin (PM2, M3) and bone collagen. The δ13C values were typical of terrestrial C3 environments and to be expected by the brackish Baltic Sea. The 13C content in the water decreases northwards, which was reflected in the results. The analyses displayed overall elevated δ15N values, which is consistent with fish having been an important part of the nutrition of all the populations. The PM2 and bone collagen δ15N values diverged in the Iin Hamina population, implying different diets of children and adults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soil carbon sequestration has gained traction as a mean to mitigate rising atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations. Verification of different methods' efficiency to increase soil carbon sink requires, in addition to good quality measurements, reliable models capable of simulating the effect of the sequestration practises. One way to get insight of the methods' effects on carbon cycling processes is to analyse different carbon isotope concentrations in soil organic matter. In this paper we introduce a carbon-13 isotope specific soil organic matter decomposition add-on into the Yasso soil carbon model and assess its functionality. The new 13C-dedicated decomposition is straightforward to implement and depends linearly on the default Yasso model parameters and the relative carbon isotope (13C/12C) concentration. Rationale: A silver phosphate reference material (Ag3PO4) for the measurement of stable oxygen isotope compositions is much needed; however, it is not available from the authorities distributing reference materials. This study aims to fill this gap by calibrating a new Ag3PO4 stable isotope comparison material produced by the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU). Methods: Aliquots of Ag3PO4 were distributed to four laboratories who frequently measure the δ18O value in Ag3PO4; the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU), the University of Western Australia (UWA), the University of Helsinki (UH), and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ). The instruments used to perform the measurements were high‐temperature conversion elemental analysers coupled with continuous flow isotope ratio mass spectrometers. The working gas δ18O value was set to 0‰ and the normalization was done by a three‐point linear regression using the reference materials IAEA‐601, IAEA‐602, and NBS127. Results: The mean δ18O value of the new BOKU Ag3PO4 comparison material on the VSMOW‐SLAP scale is 13.71‰ and the combined uncertainty is estimated as ±0.34‰. This estimated uncertainty is within the range typical for comparison materials of phosphates and sulphates. Consistent results from the different laboratories probably derived from similar instrumentation, and use of the same reference materials and normalization procedure. The matrix effect of the different reference materials used in this study was deemed negligible. Conclusions: The BOKU Ag3PO4 can be used as an alternative comparison material for stable oxygen isotope analysis and is available for stable isotope research laboratories to facilitate calibration. Rationale: Stable isotope analyses are used on precious archeological and paleontological materials despite their destructive nature, because the information gained by these methods on, for example, feeding habits, migration and health of individuals cannot otherwise be obtained. We approached this issue by devising a new sequential extraction scheme aimed at producing multiple (O, C, N) isotope proxies from small amounts of sample. Methods: The new extraction scheme includes dissolution of the bone in dilute HNO3 followed by separate treatments of the collagenous and phosphate fractions. The collagen fraction is treated further adopting the methods presented in the literature for collagen extraction, modified to accommodate small sample sizes. The phosphate-containing fraction is purified from organic contaminants by H2O2 and the phosphate is precipitated as Ag3PO4 following methods presented in the literature. The use of HF as demineralization agent is also tested. Results: A starting amount of ca 2 mg produced enough material for meaurement by isotope ratio mass spectrometry of the collagen C and N isotope compositions and bone phosphate O isotope composition. We show that the isotopic data obtained from the sequential extraction scheme are comparable with the isotopic composition measured following conventional methodologies that are usually based on 100-500 mg sample sizes. Conclusions: The new sequential extraction scheme combines the preparation for stable isotope analysis of bone mineral and organic phases, thus minimizing the amounts of sample needed and damage caused on a sample piece.
