Abstract Background Quarantine and isolation (Q&I) are interrelated but not mutually exclusive public health practices for disease control, which may face public resistance in the context of health emergencies due to associated challenges. Hence, it is often tough for most countries to implement Q&I even in the context of health emergencies. Therefore, this scoping review examines the challenges associated with the implementation of institutional Q&I strategies during major multicountry viral outbreaks (Ebola, Lassa and COVID-19) in Africa between 2000 and 2023. Methods This scoping review was designed based on Arksey and O’Malley’s guidelines. A systematic literature search, using nine online research databases, was conducted with the aid of relevant search terms, Boolean operators and truncations. All articles obtained from the literature search were electronically imported into Rayyan web application for deduplication based on specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. From the included literature, relevant data were charted, summarized, collated, and presented. Results This review included 24 of the 787 retrieved articles. Sixteen of the 24 selected articles investigated issues related to COVID-19 prevention and control in Africa. Two assessed precautionary practices for Lassa fever, while five were on Ebola virus disease. However, one article explored knowledge, preventive practices, and general isolation precautions. The review identified various challenges that hindered the implementation of successful Q&I practices during viral infection outbreaks in Africa. Essential healthcare infrastructure, equipment (medical supplies including personal protective equipment and testing kits) and facilities that are essential for Q&I were deficient. Q&I implementation was often threatened by low human resource capacity and inefficiencies in the healthcare system which portray Africa as unprepared to handle complex public health crises. Conclusions This review shows that Q&I implementation in Africa is often threatened by low human resource capacity and inefficiencies in the healthcare system and also portrays Africa as unprepared to handle complex public health crises. Hence, Q&I for major multicountry outbreaks in Africa is very challenging. Therefore, continuous efforts to address these identified challenges are crucial to enhancing health emergency preparedness in Africa.

3. Underexplored Molecular Mechanisms of Toxicity

Social biases may concentrate the attention of researchers on a small number of well-known molecules/mechanisms leaving others underexplored. In accordance with this view, central to mechanistic toxicology is a narrow range of molecular pathways that are assumed to be involved in a significant part of the responses to toxicity. It is unclear, however, if there are other molecular mechanisms which play an important role in toxicity events but are overlooked by toxicology. To identify overlooked genes sensitive to chemical exposures, we used publicly available databases. First, we used data on the published chemical–gene interactions for 17,338 genes to estimate their sensitivity to chemical exposures. Next, we extracted data on publication numbers per gene for 19,243 human genes from the Find My Understudied Genes database. Thresholds were applied to both datasets using our algorithm to identify chemically sensitive and chemically insensitive genes and well-studied and underexplored genes. A total of 1110 underexplored genes highly sensitive to chemical exposures were used in GSEA and Shiny GO analyses to identify enriched biological categories. The metabolism of fatty acids, amino acids, and glucose were identified as underexplored molecular mechanisms sensitive to chemical exposures. These findings suggest that future effort is needed to uncover the role of xenobiotics in the current epidemics of metabolic diseases.

4. Pharmacognostic, phytochemical, and chemomicroscopic evaluation of Physalis angulata (L)

Background/Introduction: Since the start of civilization, human culture has used plants to treat illnesses. Many plant samples have been adulterated intentionally or unintentionally during processing or even misidentified during collection. This study aims at authenticating and standardizing of Physalis angulata by carrying out Pharmacognostic evaluation, HPLC and GCMS analysis. Methodology: The dried leaves of Physalis angulata was extracted with 70% ethanol. Phytochemical screening (qualitative and quantitative screening) analysis was carried out on the ethanolic leave extract using standard method, while the chemical compounds were established with HPLC-DAD and GCMS and Pharmacognostic evaluation was carried out on the powdered leave. Results and discussion: Qualitative phytochemical analysis of the leave extract reveals the presence of flavonoids, terpenes, alkaloid, tannins and saponin while carbohydrate, glycosides and resins were absent. Quantitative phytochemical screening shows alkaloid present to be 2.4±0.4% and saponin 2±1.32%. HPLC analysis reveals the presence of quercetin, rutin, catechin and ferulic acid while GCMS reveals the presence of cyclohexene, Palmitic acid, 17-Octadecynoic acid, 1,2-Benzenedicarboxylic acid and Phytol. Total Ash content is (15.23±0.43) %w/w with acid insoluble ash of (1.16 ±0.28) %w/w, water soluble ash of (8.13 ±0.32) %w/w, moisture content (5.67 ±0.14) %w/w, alcohol soluble extractive value of (5.76 ±0.40) %w/w and water-soluble extractive value of (10.96 ±0.35) %w/w. Chemomicroscopic evaluation indicate the presence of lignin, cellulose, tannins, starch, calcium oxalate, oils and protein. Microscopy, fluorescence and organoleptic analysis were also documented. Conclusion: From this study, the presence of valuable phytochemicals has been established from the plant, while HPLC and GCMS revealed the identities of these compounds. Thus, the physico chemical parameters established for Physalis angulata in this study falls within the range approved by WHO (1992) for crude plant and extract.

AbstractJournalism, with its claim to professionalism, is guided in its practice by ethical codes which prescribe what is considered ‘good work’. This theoretical article argues that, though based on certain universal prescriptions, ethics is socially and culturally situated. The observance of the codes is socially determined based on the prevailing moral and political conditions. It is also argued that the issue of the type and quality of representations available in the media should also be of concern when we discuss ethics. The article discusses some of the social constraints to the observance of ethics within the Nigerian context and argues for the need to pay greater attention to addressing the material and economic barriers to media access and representation.

7. Electric mobility investment in the power and transport sector coupling context: Lessons from Argentina, the Philippines, Poland and Romania

Many developing countries are at a crucial juncture in road transport electrification with electric mobility because they have limited economic capacity to implement government policy support and financial mechanisms that have spurred the capital-intensive electric mobility growth in developed countries. Attracting private sector investments remains a viable option for developing countries. While investors have identified opportunities to invest in developing countries, it remains to be seen which countries to prioritise, considering the complexities involved in investment decision-making despite the availability of myriad investment appraisal tools. This paper contributes to this academic and policy debate. With a power and transport sector coupling viewpoint, we explain the interaction of the power and transport sectors in the context of decarbonisation and digitalisation to identify developing countries that could be considered for private sector investment in electric mobility. Then, we apply our framework to case studies of the Philippines, Argentina, Romania, and Poland. We argue that countries with wholesale power markets and wholesale and retail power markets could attract electric mobility investment. We offer policy recommendations to stakeholders interested in electric mobility investment issues in developing countries.

Abstract Background and Aims Infectious disease outbreaks pose significant challenges in Africa due to its ecology, socioeconomic conditions, and weak health systems. Implementing institutional quarantine and isolation (Q&I) measures is crucial for managing major outbreaks. However, the cultural context often determines the success of these measures. This scoping review aims to examine existing evidence on the cultural aspects of institutional Q&I in Africa over the past two decades, focusing on the COVID‐19 pandemic and other major multi‐country disease outbreaks. Methods This scoping review's protocol was registered with the Open Science Framework registry. Nine research databases were systematically searched to retrieve all relevant literature, followed by deduplication and a two‐stage screening process using the Rayyan web application. The inclusion of any literature into this review was based on a set of eligibility criteria. Also, manual searching of the reference lists of included literature was done to retrieve any other eligible literature. From the included literature, data were charted, collected, and summarized. Findings Out of the 787 articles retrieved from the database searches, this review found only one to be eligible for inclusion. Also, no other eligible article was obtained after manual searching of the reference list for this article. The reviewed article presented empirical findings on the impact of COVID‐19 Q&I protocols on traditional burial rites in Ghana. Many Ghanaian families were against their country's protocol because they felt it was insensitive to their traditional values and burial practices. Also, the way the protocol was implemented made some Ghanaian families feel that foreign burial practices were imposed on them, which bred feelings of cultural exclusion and neglect (by the government) among Ghanaians. Conclusion Research evidence on the cultural implications of Q&I in Africa is very scanty. More research is needed on this topic of public health interest.

This study proposes the use of generative models (GANs) for augmenting the EuroSAT dataset for the Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) Classification task. We used DCGAN and WGAN-GP to generate images for each class in the dataset. We then explored the effect of augmenting the original dataset by about 10% in each case on model performance. The choice of GAN architecture seems to have no apparent effect on the model performance. However, a combination of geometric augmentation and GAN-generated images improved baseline results. Our study shows that GANs augmentation can improve the generalizability of deep classification models on satellite images., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, 6 tables. 16. Mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway in Sertoli cells regulates age-dependent changes in sperm DNA methylation

Over the past several decades, a trend toward delayed childbirth has led to increases in parental age at the time of conception. Sperm epigenome undergoes age-dependent changes increasing risks of adverse conditions in offspring conceived by fathers of advanced age. The mechanism(s) linking paternal age with epigenetic changes in sperm remain unknown. The sperm epigenome is shaped in a compartment protected by the blood-testes barrier (BTB) known to deteriorate with age. Permeability of the BTB is regulated by the balance of two mTOR complexes in Sertoli cells where mTOR complex 1 (mTORC1) promotes the opening of the BTB and mTOR complex 2 (mTORC2) promotes its integrity. We hypothesized that this balance is also responsible for age-dependent changes in the sperm epigenome. To test this hypothesis, we analyzed reproductive outcomes, including sperm DNA methylation in transgenic mice with Sertoli cell-specific suppression of mTORC1 (Rptor KO) or mTORC2 (Rictor KO). mTORC2 suppression accelerated aging of the sperm DNA methylome and resulted in a reproductive phenotype concordant with older age, including decreased testes weight and sperm counts, and increased percent of morphologically abnormal spermatozoa and mitochondrial DNA copy number. Suppression of mTORC1 resulted in the shift of DNA methylome in sperm opposite to the shift associated with physiological aging – sperm DNA methylome rejuvenation and mild changes in sperm parameters. These results demonstrate for the first time that the balance of mTOR complexes in Sertoli cells regulates the rate of sperm epigenetic aging. Thus, mTOR pathway in Sertoli cells may be used as a novel target of therapeutic interventions to rejuvenate the sperm epigenome in advanced-age fathers.

ContextSARS-CoV-2 infects cells via the angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor, whose downstream effects "counterbalance" the classical renin angiotensin aldosterone system (RAAS).ObjectiveWe aimed to determine to what extent circulating RAAS biomarker levels differ in persons with and without COVID-19 throughout the disease course.MethodsWe measured classical (renin, aldosterone, aldosterone/renin ratio [ARR], Ang2, ACE activity) and nonclassical (ACE2, Ang1,7) RAAS biomarkers in hospitalized COVID-19 patients vs SARS-CoV-2 negative controls. We compared biomarker levels in cases with contemporaneous samples from control patients with upper respiratory symptoms and a negative SARS-CoV-2 PCR test. To assess RAAS biomarker changes during the course of COVID-19 hospitalization, we studied cases at 2 different times points ∼ 12 days apart. We employed age- and sex-adjusted generalized linear models and paired/unpaired t tests.ResultsMean age was 51 years for both cases (31% women) and controls (50% women). Background Adolescents are at high risk of poor sexual and oral health. We investigated for sexual risk factors associated with caries experience and gingival health among adolescents in Nigeria. Methods This cross-sectional study collected data from 10-19-year-old adolescents in Ile-Ife, South-West Nigeria through a household survey conducted between December 2018 and January 2019. Information collected included age; sex; socioeconomic status; sexual practices (vaginal, oral, anal sex); sexual (transactional sex, multiple sex partners, condom use at last sexual intercourse) and oral health (frequency of tooth brushing, use of fluoridated toothpaste, dental service utilization in the last 12 months, consumption of refined carbohydrates in-between meals) risk behaviors; caries experience; and gingival health. Logistic regression was used to determine associations between explanatory variables (sexual and oral health risk behaviors) and outcome variables (caries experience and gingivitis). Results There were no significant associations between caries experience and history of sexual intercourse (OR:1.00); condom use at last sex act (OR:0.68); and having one (OR:2.27) or more sexual partners. Also, there was no significant association between moderate/severe gingivitis and a history of anal (OR:2.96), oral (OR:2.69), or vaginal (OR:1.40) sex; and a report of having one (OR:1.71) or more (OR:2.57) sex partners. Conclusions Some sexual health risk indicators insignificantly increase the risk for caries and moderate/severe gingivitis. Screening for sexual risk behaviors during dental care may be a suitable wellness programs approach for adolescents.

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the most common nonscarring alopecia and is characterised by distinct gradual patterned hair loss. AGA is mediated by genetic predisposition and excessive follicular sensitivity to androgens, mainly in males, leading to the progressive conversion of scalp terminal hair into vellus hair. Although highly prevalent, it is not fatal but may have a severe psychosocial impact, especially on females and younger males. Significant advances have been made in understanding AGA's epidemiology and pathophysiology, but only 2 drugs remain approved by the FDA - finasteride and minoxidil. Prolonged use of these drugs, is a prerequisite for enhanced treatment response. However, this leads to poor medication adherence and adverse effects from extended use eg, the “postfinasteride syndrome” which persists beyond stopping the drug. Hence, there is a need for research on more effective alternative treatments for AGA, with fewer side effects.This paper reviewed recent advances in AGA pathophysiology and its treatment options. The recently characterized structure of type 2, 5-alpha reductase holds significance in comprehending present and prospective treatments of AGA.

Background and objectives: Breast milk is an essential source of nutrients and energy for infants. The study analyzed for the levels of essential, toxic and rare earth elements in the breast milk of lactating mothers within Abeokuta metropolis. Materials and methods: Thirty-seven (37) breast milk samples were collected with consents of lactating mothers at Ogun State General Hospital in Abeokuta. The samples were digested using standard method and analyzed for essential, toxic and rare earth elements using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS). The data were subjected to descriptive analysis. Results: The results showed higher concentrations of toxic elements than essential elements in the breast milk of lactating mothers, where five toxic metals: Ag, Ti, V, Pb and Ba were observed to be present in 11, 14, 15, 17 and 23 breast milk samples respectively. Two essential (P and S) and two toxic (Cd and Hg (except sample 19)) elements were observed to be present in all the breast milk samples. Rare Earth Elements (except Sr, U and Rb) were below the detection limit of the instrument. Though three breast milk samples (12, 14 and 17) were observed safe, they contained two toxic (Cd and Hg) and a rare earth trace (Rb) element. Conclusion: It could be concluded that despite the inherent benefits of human breast milk with essential elements to the infants, it can still be a source of toxic and trace earth metals contamination.

Objective: To describe the financial capability (FC) and financial well-being (FWB) of adults living with acquired brain injury (ABI) from a lived experience perspective. Design: People living with ABI completed a 32-item and close others a 22-item anonymous survey using either online or print/mail-in options. Setting: Responses were collected from adults in the province of Manitoba (Canada) during August-October 2021. Participants: Respondents were adults (18+) living with ABI (n=38) or close others of ABI survivors (n=19). Adults living with ABI experienced traumatic brain injury (n=22; 58%), stroke (n=8; 21%), or other ABI mechanisms (n=8; 21%). Nineteen (50%) respondents with ABI were men, 17 (45%) were women, and 1 (2.5%) was nonbinary; 95% were more than 1-year post-ABI. Close others were spouses/partners, parents, other family, and paid caregivers. Three of the 19 close others self-reported as men and 16 as women. Interventions: n/a. Main Outcome Measure(s): n/a. Results: For key FC indicators, 13 (34%) people living with ABI felt their current knowledge and skills were insufficient, and 26 (70%) felt that ABI had affected their ability to make financial decisions or complete financial activities. Fourteen of the 19 close others have worried about the finance-related choices, skills, or behaviors of the person living with ABI, and 17 felt that ABI symptoms had affected the FC of the person living with ABI. For key FWB indicators, 22 (58%) adults living with ABI felt stressed or anxious about finances at least some of the time. Seventeen (45%) of the adults living with ABI reported having trouble making ends meet at least some of the time. Conclusions: Respondents reported FC limitations and FWB challenges for people living with ABI, which can be indicative of financial vulnerabilities and unmet needs. Future research should explore optimal ways to address these financial-related challenges after ABI.

Automated vehicles (AV) can increase safety, reduce congestion, and provide environmental benefits to the urban transport system. Nonetheless, AV’s governance in the urban transport system is challenging. This paper proposes a novel interdisciplinary methodology and contributes to the governance debate from the ‘policy’ and ‘polity’ dimensions. We attempt to draw insight from the Norwegian cultural context and a willingness to use AV survey in Oslo, Norway. We then attempt to provide insight into the workable governance approach for AV deployment in the Oslo region, Norway. Our result suggests that less than half of the people in the Oslo region are willing to use AV. Based on our analytical insight, we argue that a workable governance approach for AV that will allay fears of privacy loss while making people feel safe and secure, manage uncertainty, pessimism about technological innovation, and embrace time-honoured Norwegian traditions should be considered to support the deployment of AV in Norway.

The recent progress in blockchain and wireless communication infrastructures has paved the way for creating blockchain-based systems that protect data integrity and enable secure information sharing. Despite these advancements, concerns regarding security and privacy continue to impede the widespread adoption of blockchain technology, especially when sharing sensitive data. Specific security attacks against blockchains, such as data poisoning attacks, privacy leaks, and a single point of failure, must be addressed to develop efficient blockchain-supported IT infrastructures. This study proposes the use of deep learning methods, including Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Bi-directional LSTM (Bi-LSTM), and convolutional neural network LSTM (CNN-LSTM), to detect phishing attacks in a blockchain transaction network. These methods were evaluated on a dataset comprising malicious and benign addresses from the Ethereum blockchain dark list and whitelist dataset, and the results showed an accuracy of 99.72%.

With the rapid development of the Internet of Things (IoT), managing living spaces has become more intuitive than ever. This research illustrates the implementation of a user-friendly home management system utilizing the advanced ESP Rainmaker firmware from Espressif Systems. The study focuses on creating a seamless user experience through the efficient integration of ESP Rainmaker's features. Various hardware components are carefully selected to facilitate the creation of user-friendly smart devices, including intelligent lighting systems, switches, and climate control units. The specialized firmware tailored to the unique attributes of each device ensures secure connections with the ESP Rainmaker cloud services. The research delves into comprehensive provisioning techniques, including Bluetooth and SoftAP, to simplify device onboarding and ensure secure connectivity. Leveraging the Rainmaker cloud services, the system emphasizes the enhanced user control and synchronization of device states, contributing to an average success rate of 88% and an average response time of 2.1 seconds. This study provides valuable insights into the development of intuitive and secure home automation systems, underscoring the significance of integrated platforms like ESP Rainmaker in shaping the future of IoT-enabled living environments.

Jebba Upper Basin upstream at Kainji, was constructed on River Niger in Nigeria during the last five decades mainly for hydropower generation, but receives pollutants through anthropogenic activities. This study assesses physical and chemical characteristics of Jebba upper basin on River Niger, North Central Nigeria using appropriate standard methods. The results show that the mean values of the physical and chemical parameters of water were: temperature (27.89±1.84 °C), pH (7.17±0.22), dissolved oxygen (6.35±0.91 mg/L), total hardness (42.33±32.89 mg/L), biological oxygen demand (2.85±1.07 mg/L), and conductivity (51.13±29.09 µs/cm). The result shows that temperature has significant positive (either at r < 0.05 and r < 0.01) association with Total Hardness (TH) (0.47), BOD (0.30) and NO3- (0.43) though inversely correlated with transparency (-0.29, r >0.05). Total Hardness also have a positive correlation (0.52, r >0.05) with nitrate. Spatial-temporal variations influenced by environmental factors were observed to impacted water quality parameters in the study area.

In many developing nations, inconsistent power supply has led to a reliance on generators for residential energy needs, resulting in increased noise and air pollution. In response, the adoption of inverters has gained prominence as a cleaner and safer alternative. However, the lack of remote monitoring and control capabilities has limited the widespread application of traditional inverters. While previous research efforts have focused on mobile app development for inverter systems, the observed limitations in accuracy, precision, and response time have prompted the need for further advancements. This study addresses these challenges through the development of a mobile app for precise inverter system control and monitoring, leveraging the Blynk app's remote-control features. The user-friendly interface of the application enhances accessibility and usability. A specialized control device, integrated with the inverter system, utilizes the ESP32 microcontroller for efficient and low-power operation. Performance evaluation of the developed system yielded an impressive 94.15% accuracy and an optimal precision of 0.98%. The recorded average response time of 1.2 seconds highlights the system's efficient and prompt responsiveness. These findings demonstrate the suitability of the developed mobile application for robust monitoring and control of inverter systems. Furthermore, the identified scope for improvement includes enhancing the response time using 5G networks and ensuring the system's compatibility with evolving technological standards.
