1. The justification of legal punishment in Kant’s philosophy

Abstract

The subject matter of the article is the problem of justification of punishment within Kant’s practical philosophy. Modern interpretations tend to reduce this problem to the issue of “retributivism”: To what extent is Kant’s theory of punishment to be regarded as retributivist? While acknowledging the significance of this question the author stresses a more fundamental one lying behind it: Is a non-contradictory theory of punishment conceivable at all within Kant’s philosophy? It is demonstrated that a solution of this question largely determines a justification of the doctrine of right as such as well as a solution of the problem of relation between right and ethics in Kantian philosophy. Some recent interpretations of Kant’s theory of punishment are examined, particularly those by O. Hoeffe and B. Byrd. It is demonstrated that neither is actually compatible with Kant’s statement that punishment is a categorical imperative. Futhermore, it is shown that this statement is crucial and necessary for Kant’s universalist project of justification of right. At the same time, it is shown that it is the universalism of Kant’s practical philosophy that leads to a kind of paradox of punishment: the categorical imperative of punishment might well demand those very actions which the categorical imperative as we know it from the “Groundwork” seems to forbid. It is proposed to see this paradox as another antinomy of practical reason. The hypothesis is offered that the separation of the principles of virtue directed to an individual will and right covering the public sphere can be considered as an attempt to solve this very antinomy.

2. Gaussian Estimates: A Brief History

Abstract

Two-sided Gaussian estimates for the fundamental solution of a second order linear parabolic differential equation are upper and lower bounds in terms of the fundamental solution of the classical heat conduction equation. In his seminal 1958 paper Nash stated, without proof, two-sided non-Gaussian bounds for the fundamental solution of a uniformly parabolic divergence structure equation assuming only boundedness of the coefficients. In his 1967-1968 papers Aronson derived truly Gaussian estimates for the fundamental solutions of a large class of linear parabolic equations (including the divergence structure equation) under minimal non-regularity assumptions on the coefficients. Subsequently in 1986 Fabes & Stroock derived Gaussian estimates for the divergence structure equation directly from the ideas of Nash and went on to prove Nash's continuity theorem and the Harnack inequality as a consequence of their estimate. In this note I describe these results together with various extensions.

3. Large Arrays of Linearly Coupled Josephson Junctions: A Survey

Abstract

In this note I survey the extensive literature on the dynamics of large series arrays of identical current biased Josephson junctions coupled through various shared loads. The equations describing the dynamics are invariant under permutation of the junctions so that in addition to the usual dynamical systems and numerical methods, group theoretic methods can be applied. In practice it is desirable to operate these circuits at a stable in-phase oscillation. The works summarized here are devoted to the study of where in parameter space the in-phase oscillations are stable and how the stability is lost. In particular, they focus on the variety of states produced through bifurcation as the in-phase oscillation loses stability. These states include discrete rotating waves and semirotors.

4. Harnack, Holder, Gauss and Widder: Serrin's Parabolic Legacy

Abstract

James Serrin's fundamental contributions to the theory of quasilinear elliptic equations are well-known and widely appreciated. He also made less well-known contributions to the theory of quasilinear parabolic equations which we dicuss in this note. Jurgen Moser gave greatly simplified proofs of the De Giorgi-Nash regularity results for linear divergence structure elliptic and parabolic differential equations using an original iterative technique. Serrin extended Moser's techniques and applied them to the study of divergence structure quasilinear elliptic equations, and in collaboration with Aronson, to divergence structure quasilinear parabolic equations. Specifically, among other results, they proved a maximum principle, Holder continuity of generalized solutions and derived a Harnack principle for a very broad class of quasilinear parabolic equations. In subsequent work, Aronson applied these results to study non-negative solutions to divergence structure linear equations without regularity assumptions on the coefficients. The results include a two-sided Gaussian estimate for the fundamental solution and a generalization of the Widder Representation Theorem.

We consider a porous mediaum flow in which the gas is initially distributed in the exterior of an empty region (a hole) and study the final stage of the hole-filling process. Hole-filling is asymptotically described by a self-similar solution which depends on a constant determined by the initial configuration. In general, this constant must be found numerically.. Abstract

We consider the equation that models the spreading of thin liquid films of power-law rheology. In particular, we analyze the existence and uniqueness of source-type self-similar solutions in planar and circular symmetries. We find that for shear-thinning fluids there exist a family of such solutions representing both finite and zero contact angle drops and that the solutions with zero contact angle are unique. Abstract

We present a systematic computational approach to the study of self-similar dynamics. The approach, through the use of what can be thought of as a ``dynamic pinning condition" factors out self-similarity, and yields a transformed, non-local evolution equation. The approach, which is capable of treating both first and second kind self-similar solutions, yields as a byproduct the self-similarity exponents of the original dynamics. We illustrate the approach through the porous medium equation, showing how both the Barenblatt (first kind) and the Graveleau (second kind) self-similar solutions arise in this framework. We also discuss certain implications of the dynamics of the transformed equation (which we will name "MN-dynamics"); in particular we discuss the discrete-time implementation of the approach, and connections with time-stepper based methods for the "coarse" integration/bifurcation analysis of microscopic simulators., Comment: 14 pages, 2 figure

10. Renormalization study of two-dimensional convergent solutions of the porous medium equation

Abstract

In the focusing problem we study a solution of the porous medium equation $u_t=\Delta (u^m)$ whose initial distribution is positive in the exterior of a closed non-circular two dimensional region, and zero inside. We implement a numerical scheme that renormalizes the solution each time that the average size of the empty region reduces by a half. The initial condition is a function with circular level sets distorted with a small sinusoidal perturbation of wave number $k\geq 3$. We find that for nonlinearity exponents m smaller than a critical value which depends on k, the solution tends to a self-similar regime, characterized by rounded polygonal interfaces and similarity exponents that depend on m and on the discrete rotational symmetry number k. 20. The two envelopes method for active learning

Abstract

Purpose: Active learning improves knowledge acquisition and provides medical students with learning habits that become an integral part of their behavior. As an integral element of our institution's transition from a lecture hall teaching culture to active learning, the current project, conducted with fourth year students, aimed to examine the effects of the two envelopes method of teaching on students' knowledge. Method: The class of 120 students was divided into 12 groups of 10 students each. Six experienced senior cardiologists were assigned to teach the 12 groups. When the students arrived at the classroom, they received two envelopes. Students were instructed to open the first envelope and answer a 10-question test in 15 minutes. After completing the test, they returned the tests to the envelope, sealed it, and then opened the second envelope which included the same test and relevant patient information. They then spent the next 30 minutes discussing the test as a group and familiarizing themselves with the patients' case histories and clinical data. After completion of the group discussion, the tutor entered the room for a two-hour discussion of the patients' disease entities including the anatomy, physiology, pathology, clinical presentation, diagnostic measures, and potential therapies. Results: We compared grades and standard deviations of grades between two classes: one learned in the lecture hall format (2018) and the other learned employing the two-envelopes method (2019). There was a non-statistically significant trend toward better grades with reduced dispersion of grades in the class that learned with the two-envelope method. Conclusions: We describe a novel method for active learning that enhances self-learning and peer learning, and we observed better knowledge acquisition and reduced knowledge dispersion that were not statistically significant., Zweck der Studie: Aktives Lernen verbessert die Aneignung von Wissen und vermittelt Medizinstudierenden Lerngewohnheiten, die zu einem integralen Bestandteil ihrer Verhaltensweise werden. Das aktuelle Projekt wurde mit Studierenden im vierten Studienjahr durchgeführt und diente als wichtiges Element bei der Umstellung unserer Einrichtung von der bisherigen vorlesungsbasierten Lehrkultur zu einer aktiven Lernkultur und dazu, die Auswirkungen der Zwei-Umschläge-Methode auf die Kenntnisse der Studierenden zu untersuchen. Methode: Der Kurs mit 120 Studierenden wurde in 12 Gruppen mit je 10 Studierenden aufgeteilt. Sechs erfahrene Kardiologen wurden den 12 Gruppen als Lehrkräfte zugeteilt. Im Lehrsaal erhielten die Studierenden zwei Umschläge. Ihnen wurde aufgetragen, den ersten Umschlag zu öffnen und einen Test mit 10 Fragen innerhalb von 15 Minuten zu beantworten. Nach Abschluss des Tests steckten sie die Testbögen wieder in den Umschlag, verschlossen diesen und öffneten dann den zweiten Umschlag, in dem sich der gleiche Test mit relevanten Patienteninformationen befand. Sie verbrachten die nächsten 30 Minuten damit, den Test in der Gruppe zu besprechen und sich mit den Fallbeschreibungen und den klinischen Daten der Patienten zu befassen. Nach Abschluss der Gruppendiskussion betrat eine Lehrkraft den Raum für eine zweistündige Besprechung der Krankheitsbilder der Patienten, einschließlich der Anatomie, Physiologie, Pathologie sowie der klinischen Erscheinungsbilder, diagnostischen Maßnahmen und potenziellen Therapien. Ergebnis: Wir verglichen die Ergebnisse und Standardabweichungen durch die Noten der beiden Kurse. Der eine Kurs wurde in Form von Vorlesungen unterrichtet (2018), der andere Kurs erlernte die Anwendung der Zwei-Umschläge-Methode (2019). Im Kurs mit der Zwei-Umschläge-Methode waren die Noten ohne statistische Signifikanz tendenziell besser und die Notenstreuung tendenziell kleiner. Abstract

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a pathological process characterized by atherosclerotic plaque accumulation in the epicardial arteries, whether obstructive or non-obstructive. This process can be modified by lifestyle adjustments, pharmacological therapies, and invasive interventions designed to achieve disease stabilization or regression. The disease can have long, stable periods but can also become unstable at any time, typically due to an acute atherothrombotic event caused by plaque rupture or erosion. However, the disease is chronic, most often progressive, and hence serious, even in clinically apparently silent periods. The dynamic nature of the CAD process results in various clinical presentations, which can be conveniently categorized as either acute coronary syndromes (ACS) or chronic coronary syndromes (CCS). The Guidelines presented here refer to the management of patients with CCS. The natural history of CCS is illustrated in Figure 1.

Abstract

This is the second iteration of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) joining forces to write guidelines on the management of diabetes mellitus (DM), pre-diabetes, and cardiovascular disease (CVD), designed to assist clinicians and other healthcare workers to make evidence-based management decisions. The growing awareness of the strong biological relationship between DM and CVD rightly prompted these two large organizations to collaborate to generate guidelines relevant to their joint interests, the first of which were published in 2007. Some assert that too many guidelines are being produced but, in this burgeoning field, five years in the development of both basic and clinical science is a long time and major trials have reported in this period, making it necessary to update the previous Guidelines.

Abstract

Background Ectopic pancreatic tissue (EPT) in a Meckel diverticulum is a well-known anomaly. Other locations are rare, especially in pediatric patients. We report on three children with incidental findings of EPT and reviewed the literature. Patients and methods Three children with incidental findings of EPT treated in our department, and 62 patients found in the literature were analyzed. The literature search was performed excluding EPT in Meckel's diverticulum and in tumors, i.e. teratomas. Results Two of our patients presented with an umbilical mass. The third patient presented with a gastric outlet obstruction due to an antral/pyloric mass. Histopathology showed EPT in all three of our patients without any signs of malignancy. In the literature, patients with EPT often appear to be asymptomatic. Symptomatic patients may present with bowel obstruction or intussusception. EPT in the umbilicus frequently seems to cause umbilical discharge. Our analysis supported the leading opinion in the literature that the upper gastrointestinal tract and especially the gastric antrum must be considered the most common location of EPT. Conclusion Although unusual in children, awareness of EPT may help to obtain the proper diagnosis faster and to plan accurate surgical therapy.
