3. Education for Motherhood: Advice for Mothers in Twentieth-Century Canada.

Abstract

This book is an attempt to situate Canadian child-rearing advice in its historical and social context in 21st century and the origins and changes in this advice. The volume addresses the untold story of the experience of mothering that largely has been omitted from traditional accounts of history. This account of education for motherhood begins in the first decade of this century, when the high mortality rate among infants, small children, and women in childbirth prompted a massive government campaign to educate women in the complex tasks of motherhood. The book traces the development of the advice given to mothers during this century. Focusing on the period from 1900 to 1960, the book provides documentation of the barrage of advice from experts and assesses the changing messages and their impact on women's daily lives. The volume's chapters include: (1) "Preface: The Experience of Motherhood"; (2) "Introduction"; (3) "Waging War on Infant Mortality"; (4) "Creating 'An Educational Campaign'"; (5) "Medicalizing Motherhood: Pregnancy and Childbirth"; (6) "'Bringing Up Baby': The Care and Feeding of Infants and Young Children"; (7) "Thoroughly Modern Mother"; and (8) "Conclusion." 7. Raising the Dionne Quintuplets: lessons for modern mothers

Abstract

During the interwar years, men and women in the fields of health, child psychology and social work intervened in an increasingly aggressive manner in the business of raising children. Through the production of an enormous volume of advice literature, experts sought to educate women in the ways of scientific motherhood. The birth of the Dionne Quintuplets in 1934 provided child-care experts with ideal experimental conditions. In contrast to a traditional doctor-patient relationship, doctors were able to dictate the exact terms of the Quintuplets' routines without being encumbered by the presence of their biological mother. The Quintuplets became a powerful role model for mothers, who were exhorted to follow the scientific regimen established by a team of doctors. Canadian women identified closely with the Quintuplets, and many women tried to replicate the Quints' regimen in their own child-rearing practices. This paper examines advice literature produced by the Quintuplet experts, looking at both the content and the implications of the advice given to mothers. As well, the author explores the experts' attitudes towards mothers, both in their published writings on the Dionne Quintuplets and in their treatment of Elzire Dionne.

Abstract

"The History of the Book in Canada is one of this country's great scholarly achievements, with three volumes spanning topics from Aboriginal communication systems established prior to European contact to the arrival of multinational publishing companies. Each volume observes developments in the realms of writing, publishing, dissemination, and reading, illustrating the process of a fledgling nation coming into its own. The third and final volume follows book history and print culture from the end of the First World War to 1980, discussing the influences on them of the twentieth century, including the country's growing demographic complexity and the rise of multiculturalism." -- Front flap of jacket.

Lesbian and gay parents are profoundly affected by the political and legal climate within which they live and raise their children. This paper explores the changing legal treatment of lesbian and gay families in the United States and Canada during the past two decades. Through an examination of recent American and Canadian child custody, and access and adoption cases in which sexual orientation has been a factor, the author documents homophobic laws and policies facing lesbian and gay families, as well as the important legal and political victories they have achieved. On a recent car trip through Virginia, a small roadside sign caught my attention: “You are leaving Henrico County.” Henrico County: the jurisdiction where Sharon Bottoms lost custody of her child; the jurisdiction where lesbian mothers still risk the automatic loss of their children. 26. Caring to the End: The meanings of hospice volunteering.

Abstract

The article discusses the experiences of a group of Canadian men and women who offer care support as hospice volunteers to those facing the end of life. The power of caregiving at this point of transition to transform everyone involved is highlighted by the article. Interviews conducted with 15 hospice volunteers provided testimonies from people who have chosen to face death head on through their work with dying people and their families.
