The Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) satellite performed the first and only large-area UV survey, which in tandem with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) has facilitated modeling of the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of low-redshift galaxies and the determination of various galaxy properties, in particular the star formation rate. However, the relatively crude angular resolution of GALEX (5") made its images susceptible to blending of sources, resulting in potentially biased far-UV (FUV) and near-UV (NUV) pipeline photometry. To remedy this issue and take advantage of model-fit photometry, we use the EMphot software to obtain forced GALEX photometry for ~700,000 SDSS galaxies at z<0.3. Positional priors of target galaxies and potentially contaminating neighbors were taken from SDSS. New photometry is based on the best-fitting of three model profiles: optical-like, exponential and flat. New photometry mitigates blending present in the original pipeline catalogs, which affected 16% of galaxies at a level of >0.2 mag and 2% at a level of >1 mag. Pipeline NUV magnitudes are severely affected (>1 mag) when the neighbor is brighter than the target galaxy and within 10", or when the neighbor is fainter and within ~3" of the target. New photometry fixes edge-of-detector bias, which affected pipeline photometry by up to 0.1 mag in NUV. We present catalogs with new photometry for GALEX observations of different depths, corresponding to the all-sky imaging survey (AIS), medium imaging survey (MIS) and deep imaging survey (DIS). Using the extended halo-based group finder developed by Yang et al. (2021), which is able to deal with galaxies via spectroscopic and photometric redshifts simultaneously, we construct galaxy group and candidate protocluster catalogs in a wide redshift range ($0 < z < 6$) from the joint CFHT Large Area $U$-band Deep Survey (CLAUDS) and Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) deep data set. Based on a selection of 5,607,052 galaxies with $i$-band magnitude $m_{i} < 26$ and a sky coverage of $34.41\ {\rm deg}^2$, we identify a total of 2,232,134 groups, within which 402,947 groups have at least three member galaxies. We have visually checked and discussed the general properties of those richest groups at redshift $z>2.0$. By checking the galaxy number distributions within a $5-7\ h^{-1}\mathrm{Mpc}$ projected separation and a redshift difference $\Delta z \le 0.1$ around those richest groups at redshift $z>2$, we identified a list of 761, 343 and 43 protocluster candidates in the redshift bins $2\leq z<3$, $3\leq z<4$ and $z \geq 4$, respectively. The upcoming WEAVE-QSO survey will target a high density of quasars over a large area, enabling the reconstruction of the 3D density field through Lyman-$\alpha$ tomography over unprecedented volumes smoothed on intermediate scales ($\approx$ 16 Mpc/$h$). We produce mocks of the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest using LyMAS, and reconstruct the 3D density field between sightlines through Wiener filtering in a configuration compatible with the future WEAVE-QSO observations. The fidelity of the reconstruction is assessed by measuring one- and two-point statistics from the distribution of critical points in the cosmic web. In addition, initial Lagrangian statistics are predicted from first principles, and measurements of the connectivity of the cosmic web are performed. The reconstruction captures well the expected features in the auto- and cross-correlations of the critical points. This remains true after a realistic noise is added to the synthetic spectra, even though sparsity of sightlines introduces systematics, especially in the cross-correlations of points with mixed signature. Specifically, for walls and filaments, the most striking clustering features could be measured with up to 4 sigma of significance with a WEAVE-QSO-like survey. Moreover, the connectivity of each peak identified in the reconstructed field is globally consistent with its counterpart in the original field, indicating that the reconstruction preserves the geometry of the density field not only statistically, but also locally. Hence the critical points relative positions within the tomographic reconstruction could be used as standard rulers for dark energy by WEAVE-QSO and similar surveys., Comment: 26 pages, 22 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We use deep and wide imaging data from the CFHT Large Area U-band Deep Survey (CLAUDS) and the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) to constrain the ionizing radiation (Lyman Continuum; LyC) escape fraction from AGNs at $z \sim 3 - 4$. For 94 AGNs with spectroscopic redshifts at $3.3 < z < 4.0$, we use their U-band / i-band flux ratios to estimate LyC transmission of individual AGNs. The distribution of their LyC transmission shows values lower than the range of LyC transmission values for IGM of the same redshift range, which suggests that LyC escape fraction of AGNs at $z>3.3$ is considerably lower than unity in most cases. We do not find any trend in LyC transmission values depending on their UV luminosities. Based on the photometry of stacked images we find the average flux ratio of LyC and non-ionizing UV photons escaping from the objects $(f_{LyC}/f_{UV})^{out} = 0.182 \pm 0.043$ for AGNs at $3.3

We present new measurements of rest-UV luminosity functions and angular correlation functions from 4,100,221 galaxies at z~2-7 identified in the Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam survey and CFHT Large-Area U-band Survey. The obtained luminosity functions at z~4-7 cover a very wide UV luminosity range of ~0.002-2000L*uv combined with previous studies, revealing that the dropout luminosity function is a superposition of the AGN luminosity function dominant at Muv<-24 mag and the galaxy luminosity function dominant at Muv>-22 mag, consistent with galaxy fractions based on 1037 spectroscopically-identified sources. Galaxy luminosity functions estimated from the spectroscopic galaxy fractions show the bright end excess beyond the Schechter function at >2sigma levels, which is possibly made by inefficient mass quenching, low dust obscuration, and/or hidden AGN activity. By analyzing the correlation functions at z~2-6 with halo occupation distribution models, we find a weak redshift evolution (within 0.3 dex) of the ratio of the star formation rate (SFR) to the dark matter accretion rate, SFR/(dMh/dt), indicating the almost constant star formation efficiency at z~2-6, as suggested by our earlier work at z~4-7. Meanwhile, the ratio gradually increases with decreasing redshift at z<5 within 0.3 dex, which quantitatively reproduces the redshift evolution of the cosmic SFR density, suggesting that the evolution is primarily driven by the increase of the halo number density due to the structure formation, and the decrease of the accretion rate due to the cosmic expansion. Extrapolating this calculation to higher redshifts assuming the constant efficiency suggests a rapid decrease of the SFR density at z>10 with $\propto10^{-0.5(1+z)}$, which will be directly tested with JWST., Comment: 53 pages, 26 figures, 10 tables, accepted for publication in ApJS. We present redshifts for 2753 low-redshift galaxies between $0.03 \lesssim z_{\rm spec}\lesssim0.5$ with 18 $\leq$ $r$ $\leq$ 22 obtained with Hectospec at the Multi-Mirror Telescope (MMT). The observations targeted the XMM-LSS, ELAIS-N1 and DEEP2-3 fields, each of which covers $\sim$ 1 deg$^2$. These fields are also part of the recently completed CFHT Large Area U-band Deep Survey (CLAUDS) and on-going Hyper Suprime-Cam deep fields surveys. The efficiency of our technique for selecting low-redshift galaxies is confirmed by the redshift distribution of our sources. In addition to redshifts, these high S/N spectra are used to measure ages, metallicities, and nuclear activity levels. In combination with the photometric catalogue in $u$, $g$, $r$, $i$, $z$, $y$ down to 27 AB mag, we are able to study the galaxy population down to stellar masses of $\sim$ 10$^8 M_\odot$ . We estimate the evolution of the galaxy-galaxy merger fraction for $M_\star>10^{10.5}M_\odot$ galaxies over $0.25

We present the result of a search for orphan Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) afterglows in the Pan-STARRS1 (PS1) COSMOS survey. There is extensive theoretical and observational evidence suggesting that GRBs are collimated jets; the direct observation of orphan GRB afterglows would further support this model. An optimal survey strategy is designed by coupling the PS1 survey with the Subaru/Hyper-Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey. The PS1 COSMOS survey, one of the survey fields in the PS1 Medium Deep Survey (PS1/MDS), searches a field of 7 deg$^2$ from December 2011 to January 2014, reaching a limiting magnitude R $\sim$ 23. The dense cadence of PS1/MDS is crucial for identifying transients, and the deep magnitude reached by the HSC survey (R $\sim$ 26) is important for evaluating potential GRB hosts. A transient classification method is employed to select potential orphan GRB afterglow candidates. After a thorough analysis of the transient and host galaxy properties, we conclude that there are no candidates in this survey field. We study the environments of a sample of 61 extremely rare z~1.6 Ultra-Massive Passively Evolving Galaxies (UMPEGs: stellar masses M_stars >10^11.5 M_sun) which -- based on clustering analysis presented in Cheema et al. (2020) -- appear to be associated with very massive (M_halo ~ 10^14.1 h^-1 M_sun) dark matter halos that are likely to be the progenitors of z~0 massive (Coma- and Virgo-like) galaxy clusters. We find that UMPEGs on average have fewer than one satellite galaxy with mass ratio M_sat : M_UMPEG >~ 1:5 (i.e., M_sat >~ 10^10.8 M_sun) within 0.5 Mpc; the large mass gap that we observe between the typical UMPEG and its most massive satellite implies that the z~1.6 UMPEGs assembled through major mergers. Using observed satellite counts with merger timescales from the literature, we estimate the growth rate due to mergers with mass ratio of >~ 1:4 to be ~13% Gyr^-1 (with a ~2x systematic uncertainty). This relatively low growth rate is unlikely to significantly affect the shape of the massive end of the stellar mass function, whose evolution must instead be driven by the quenching of new cohorts of ultra-massive star-forming galaxies. However, this growth rate is high enough that, if sustained to z~0, the typical z~1.6 M_UMPEG=10^11.6 M_sun UMPEG can grow into a M_stars~10^12 M_sun brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) of a present-day massive galaxy cluster. Our observations favour a scenario in which our UMPEGs are main-branch progenitors of some of the present-day BCGs that have first assembled through major mergers at high redshifts and grown further through (likely minor) merging at later times., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

We use a 27.6 deg$^2$ survey to measure the clustering of $gzK_s$-selected quiescent galaxies at $z\sim1.6$, focusing on ultra-massive quiescent galaxies. We find that $z\sim1.6$ Ultra-Massive Passively Evolving Galaxies (UMPEGs), which have $K_s(AB)<19.75$ (stellar masses of $M_{stars}$ $>\sim 10^{11.4}M_{\odot}$ and mean $<$$M_{stars}$$>$ = $10^{11.5}M_{\odot}$), cluster more strongly than any other known galaxy population at high redshift. Comparing their correlation length, $r_0 = 29.77 \pm 2.75$ $ h^{-1}$Mpc, with the clustering of dark matter halos in the Millennium XXL N-body simulation suggests that these $z\sim1.6$ UMPEGs reside in dark matter halos of mass $M_{h}\sim10^{14.1}h^{-1}M_{\odot}$. Such very massive $z\sim1.6$ halos are associated with the ancestors of $z\sim0$ massive galaxy clusters such as the Virgo and Coma clusters. Given their extreme stellar masses and lack of companions with comparable mass, we surmise that these UMPEGs could be the already-quenched central massive galaxies of their (proto)clusters. We conclude that with only a modest amount of further growth in their stellar mass, $z\sim1.6$ UMPEGs could be the progenitors of some of the massive central galaxies of present-day massive galaxy clusters observed to be already very massive and quiescent near the peak epoch of the cosmic star formation., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We constrain the rest-frame FUV (1546\AA), NUV (2345\AA) and U-band (3690\AA) luminosity functions (LFs) and luminosity densities (LDs) with unprecedented precision from $z\sim0.2$ to $z\sim3$ (FUV, NUV) and $z\sim2$ (U-band). Our sample of over 4.3 million galaxies, selected from the CFHT Large Area $U$-band Deep Survey (CLAUDS) and HyperSuprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) data lets us probe the very faint regime (down to $M_\mathrm{FUV},M_\mathrm{NUV},M_\mathrm{U} \simeq -15$ at low redshift) while simultaneously detecting very rare galaxies at the bright end down to comoving densities $<10^{-5}$ Mpc$^{-3}$. Our FUV and NUV LFs are well fitted by single Schechter functions, with faint-end slopes that are very stable up to $z\sim2$. We confirm, but self-consistently and with much better precision than previous studies, that the LDs at all three wavelengths increase rapidly with lookback time to $z\sim1$, and then much more slowly at $11$ it is due to the evolution of both $M^\star_{UV}$ and the characteristic number density $\phi^\star_{UV}$. In contrast, the U-band LF has an excess of faint galaxies and is fitted with a double-Schechter form; $M^\star_\mathrm{U}$, both $\phi^\star_\mathrm{U}$ components, and the bright-end slope evolve throughout $0.2

We investigate the impact of the number of filaments connected to the nodes of the cosmic web on the physical properties of their galaxies using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We compare these measurements to the cosmological hydrodynamical simulations Horizon-(no)AGN and Simba. We find that more massive galaxies are more connected, in qualitative agreement with theoretical predictions and measurements in dark matter only simulation. The star formation activity and morphology of observed galaxies both display some dependence on the connectivity of the cosmic web at fixed stellar mass: less star forming and less rotation supported galaxies also tend to have higher connectivity. These results qualitatively hold both for observed and virtual galaxies, and can be understood given that the cosmic web is the main source of fuel for galaxy growth. The simulations show the same trends at fixed halo mass, suggesting that the geometry of filamentary infall impacts galaxy properties beyond the depth of the local potential well. Based on simulations, it is also found that AGN feedback is key in reversing the relationship between stellar mass and connectivity at fixed halo mass. The CFHT Large Area U-band Deep Survey (CLAUDS) uses data taken with the MegaCam mosaic imager on CFHT to produce images of 18.60 deg2 with median seeing of FWHM=0.92 arcsec and to a median depth of U = 27.1 AB (5 sigma in 2 arcsec apertures), with selected areas that total 1.36 deg2 reaching a median depth of U=27.7 AB. These are the deepest U-band images assembled to date over this large an area. These data are located in four fields also imaged to comparably faint levels in grizy and several narrowband filters as part of the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP). These CFHT and Subaru datasets will remain unmatched in their combination of area and depth until the advent of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). This paper provides an overview of the scientific motivation for CLAUDS and gives details of the observing strategy, observations, data reduction, and data merging with the HSC-SSP. Three early applications of these deep data are used to illustrate the potential of the dataset: deep U-band galaxy number counts, z~3 Lyman break galaxy (LBG) selection, and photometric redshifts improved by adding CLAUDS U to the Subaru HSC grizy photometry., Comment: MNRAS, in press

We introduce the largest to date survey of massive quiescent galaxies at redshift z~1.6. With these data, which cover 27.6 deg^2, we can find significant numbers of very rare objects such as ultra-massive quiescent galaxies that populate the extreme massive end of the galaxy mass function, or dense environments that are likely to become present-day massive galaxy clusters. In this paper, the first in a series, we apply our gzK adaptation of the BzK technique to select our z~1.6 galaxy catalog and then study the quiescent galaxy stellar mass function with good statistics over M_stars ~ 10^10.2 - 10^11.7 M_sun --- a factor of 30 in mass --- including 60 ultra-massive z~1.6 quiescent galaxies with M_stars > 10^11.5 M_sun. We find that the stellar mass function of quiescent galaxies at z~1.6 is well represented by the Schechter function over this large mass range. This suggests that the mass quenching mechanism observed at lower redshifts must have already been well established by this epoch, and that it is likely due to a single physical mechanism over a wide range of mass. This close adherence to the Schechter shape also suggests that neither merging nor gravitational lensing significantly affect the observed quenched population. Finally, comparing measurements of M* parameters for quiescent and star-forming populations (ours and from the literature), we find hints of an offset (M*_SF > M*_PE), that could suggest that the efficiency of the quenching process evolves with time., Comment: Accepted for publication by MNRAS

We investigate the connection between X-ray and radio-loud AGNs and the physical properties of their evolved and massive host galaxies, focussing on the mass-related quenching channel followed by $\mathcal{M}^\star (\simeq 10^{10.6} M_\odot)$ galaxies in the rest-frame NUVrK colour diagram at $0.2 < z < 0.5$. While our results confirm that (1) radio-loud AGNs are predominantly hosted by already-quenched and very massive ($M_*>10^{11}M_\odot$) galaxies, ruling out their feedback as a primary driver of $\mathcal{M}^\star$ galaxy quenching, we found that (2) X-ray AGNs affected by heavy obscuration of their soft X-ray emission are mostly hosted by $\mathcal{M}^\star$ galaxies that are in the process of quenching. This is consistent with a quenching scenario that involves mergers of (gas-poor) $\mathcal{M}^\star$ galaxies $after$ the onset of the quenching process, i.e., a scenario where $\mathcal{M}^\star$ galaxy mergers are not the cause but rather an aftermath of the quenching mechanism(s). In that respect, we discuss how our results may support a picture where the slow quenching of $\mathcal{M}^\star$ galaxies happens due to halo-halo mergers along cosmic filaments., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures. We developed a Deep Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), used as a classifier, to estimate photometric redshifts and associated probability distribution functions (PDF) for galaxies in the Main Galaxy Sample of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey at z < 0.4. Our method exploits all the information present in the images without any feature extraction. The input data consist of 64x64 pixel ugriz images centered on the spectroscopic targets, plus the galactic reddening value on the line-of-sight. For training sets of 100k objects or more ($\geq$ 20% of the database), we reach a dispersion $\sigma_{MAD}$<0.01, significantly lower than the current best one obtained from another machine learning technique on the same sample. The bias is lower than 0.0001, independent of photometric redshift. The PDFs are shown to have very good predictive power. We also find that the CNN redshifts are unbiased with respect to galaxy inclination, and that $\sigma_{MAD}$ decreases with the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), achieving values below 0.007 for SNR >100, as in the deep stacked region of Stripe 82. We argue that for most galaxies the precision is limited by the SNR of SDSS images rather than by the method. We investigate the connection between environment and the different quenching channels that galaxies are prone to follow in the rest-frame NUVrK colour diagram, as identified by Moutard et al. (2016b). Namely, the fast quenching channel followed by $young$ low-mass galaxies and the slow quenching channel followed by $old$ high-mass ones. We make use of the >22 deg$^2$ covered the VIPERS Multi-Lambda Survey (VIPERS-MLS) to select a galaxy sample complete down to stellar masses of $M_* > 10^{9.4} M_\odot$ at $z < 0.65$ ($M_* > 10^{8.8} M_\odot$ at $z < 0.5$) and including 33,500 (43,000) quiescent galaxies properly selected at $0.2 < z < 0.65$, while being characterized by reliable photometric redshifts ($\sigma_{\delta z/(1+z)} \leq 0.04$) that we use to measure galaxy local densities. We find that (1) the quiescence of low-mass [$M_* \leq 10^{9.7} M_\odot$] galaxies requires a strong increase of the local density, which confirms the lead role played by environment in their fast quenching and, therefore, confirms that the low-mass upturn observed in the stellar mass function of quiescent galaxies is due to $environmental$ $quenching$. We also observe that (2) the reservoir of low-mass star-forming galaxies located in very dense regions (prone to environmental quenching) has grown between $z \sim 0.6$ and $ z \sim 0.4$ whilst the share of low-mass quiescent galaxies (expected to being environmentally quenched) may have simultaneously increased, which would plead for a rising importance of $environmental$ $quenching$ with cosmic time, compared to $mass$ $quenching$. The variations of galaxy stellar masses and colour-types with the distance to projected cosmic filaments are quantified using the precise photometric redshifts of the COSMOS2015 catalogue extracted from COSMOS field (2 deg$^{2}$). Realistic mock catalogues are also extracted from the lightcone of the cosmological hydrodynamical simulation Horizon-AGN. They show that the photometric redshift accuracy of the observed catalogue ($\sigma_z<0.015$ at $M_*>10^{10}{\rm M}_{\odot}$ and $z<0.9$) is sufficient to provide 2D filaments that closely match their projected 3D counterparts. Transverse stellar mass gradients are measured in projected slices of thickness 75 Mpc between $0.5< z <0.9$, showing that the most massive galaxies are statistically closer to their neighbouring filament. At fixed stellar mass, passive galaxies are also found closer to their filament while active star-forming galaxies statistically lie further away. The contributions of nodes and local density are removed from these gradients to highlight the specific role played by the geometry of the filaments. We find that the measured signal does persist after this removal, clearly demonstrating that proximity to a filament is not equivalent to proximity to an over-density. These findings are in agreement with gradients measured both in 2D or 3D in the Horizon-AGN simulation and those observed in the spectroscopic VIPERS survey (which rely on the identification of 3D filaments). They are consistent with a picture in which the influence of the geometry of the large-scale environment drives anisotropic tides which impact the assembly history of galaxies, and hence their observed properties., Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures, 5 tables; submitted to MNRAS

PFS (Prime Focus Spectrograph), a next generation facility instrument on the 8.2-meter Subaru Telescope, is a very wide-field, massively multiplexed, optical and near-infrared spectrograph. Exploiting the Subaru prime focus, 2394 reconfigurable fibers will be distributed over the 1.3 deg field of view. The spectrograph has been designed with 3 arms of blue, red, and near-infrared cameras to simultaneously observe spectra from 380nm to 1260nm in one exposure at a resolution of ~1.6-2.7A. An international collaboration is developing this instrument under the initiative of Kavli IPMU. The project is now going into the construction phase aiming at undertaking system integration in 2017-2018 and subsequently carrying out engineering operations in 2018-2019. We measure the cross-correlation signature between the Planck CMB lensing map and the weak lensing observations from both the Red-sequence Cluster Lensing Survey (RCSLenS) and the Canada-France-Hawai Telescope Lensing Survey (CFHTLenS). In addition to a Fourier analysis, we include the first configuration-space detection, based on the estimators $\langle \kappa_{\rm CMB} \kappa_{\rm gal} \rangle$ and $\langle \kappa_{\rm CMB} \gamma_{t} \rangle$. Combining 747.2 deg$^2$ from both surveys, we find a detection significance that exceeds $4.2\sigma$ in both Fourier- and configuration-space analyses. Scaling the predictions by a free parameter $A$, we obtain $A^{\rm Planck}_{\rm CFHT}= 0.68\pm 0.31 $ and $A^{\rm Planck}_{\rm RCS}= 1.31\pm 0.33$. In preparation for the next generation of measurements similar to these, we quantify the impact of different analysis choices on these results. First, since none of these estimators probes the exact same dynamical range, we improve our detection by combining them. Second, we carry out a detailed investigation on the effect of apodization, zero-padding and mask multiplication, validated on a suite of high-resolution simulations, and find that the latter produces the largest systematic bias in the cosmological interpretation. A large-scale hydrodynamical cosmological simulation, Horizon-AGN, is used to investigate the alignment between the spin of galaxies and the cosmic filaments above redshift 1.2. The analysis of more than 150 000 galaxies per time step in the redshift range 1.2

We present an empirical method of assessing the star formation rate (SFR) of star-forming galaxies based on their locations in the rest-frame color-color diagram (NUV-r) vs (r-K). By using the Spitzer 24 micron sample in the COSMOS field (~16400 galaxies with 0.2 < z < 1.3) and a local GALEX-SDSS-SWIRE sample (~700 galaxies with z < 0.2), we show that the mean infrared excess = < L_IR / L_UV > can be described by a single vector, NRK, that combines the two colors. The calibration between and NRK allows us to recover the IR luminosity, L_IR, with an accuracy of ~0.21 dex for the COSMOS sample and ~0.27 dex for the local one. The SFRs derived with this method agree with the ones based on the observed (UV+IR) luminosities and on the spectral energy distribution fitting for the vast majority (~85 %) of the star-forming population. Thanks to a library of model galaxy SEDs with realistic prescriptions for the star formation history, we show that we need to include a two-component dust model (i.e., birth clouds and diffuse ISM) and a full distribution of galaxy inclinations in order to reproduce the behavior of the stripes in the NUVrK diagram. In conclusion, the NRK method, based only on rest-frame UV and optical colors available in most of the extragalactic fields, offers a simple alternative of assessing the SFR of star-forming galaxies in the absence of far-IR or spectral diagnostic observations., Comment: 21 pages, 22 figures, in publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We measure the evolution of the stellar mass function (SMF) from z=0-1 using multi-wavelength imaging and spectroscopic redshifts from the PRism MUlti-object Survey (PRIMUS) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). From PRIMUS we construct an i<23 flux-limited sample of ~40,000 galaxies at z=0.2-1.0 over five fields totaling ~5.5 deg^2, and from the SDSS we select ~170,000 galaxies at z=0.01-0.2 that we analyze consistently with respect to PRIMUS to minimize systematic errors in our evolutionary measurements. We find that the SMF of all galaxies evolves relatively little since z=1, although we do find evidence for mass assembly downsizing; we measure a ~30% increase in the number density of ~10^10 Msun galaxies since z~0.6, and a <10% change in the number density of all >10^11 Msun galaxies since z~1. Dividing the sample into star-forming and quiescent using an evolving cut in specific star-formation rate, we find that the number density of ~10^10 Msun star-forming galaxies stays relatively constant since z~0.6, whereas the space-density of >10^11 Msun star-forming galaxies decreases by ~50% between z~1 and z~0. Meanwhile, the number density of ~10^10 Msun quiescent galaxies increases steeply towards low redshift, by a factor of ~2-3 since z~0.6, while the number of massive quiescent galaxies remains approximately constant since z~1. These results suggest that the rate at which star-forming galaxies are quenched increases with decreasing stellar mass, but that the bulk of the stellar mass buildup within the quiescent population occurs around ~10^10.8 Msun. Now that large databases of resolved galaxy images are provided by modern imaging surveys, advanced morphological studies can be envisioned, urging for well defined calibration samples. We present the EFIGI catalogue, a multiwavelength database specifically designed for a dense sampling of all Hubble types. The catalogue merges data from standard surveys and catalogues (Principal Galaxy Catalogue, Sloan Digital Sky Survey, Value-Added Galaxy Catalogue, HyperLeda, and the NASA Extragalactic Database) and provides detailed morphological information. Imaging data are obtained from the SDSS DR4 in the u, g, r, i, and z bands for a sample of 4458 PGC galaxies, whereas photometric and spectroscopic data are obtained from the SDSS DR5 catalogue. Point-Spread Function models are derived in all five bands. Composite colour images of all objects are visually examined by a group of astronomers, and galaxies are staged along the Hubble sequence and classified according to 16 morphological attributes describing their structure, texture, as well as environment and appearance on a five-level scale. The EFIGI Hubble sequence shows remarkable agreement with the RC3 Revised Hubble Sequence. The main characteristics and reliability of the catalogue are examined, including photometric completeness, type mix, systematic trends and correlations. The final EFIGI database is a large sub-sample of the local Universe, with a dense sampling of Sd, Sdm, Sm and Im types compared to magnitude-limited catalogues. By cross-correlating AKARI infrared (IR) sources with the SDSS galaxies, we identified 2357 infrared galaxies with a spectroscopic redshift. This is not just one of the largest samples of local IR galaxies, but AKARI provides crucial FIR bands (9, 18, 65, 90, 140, and 160um) in accurately measuring galaxy SED across the peak of the dust emission at ~100um. By fitting modern IR SED models to the AKARI photometry, we measured the total infrared luminosity (L_IR) of individual galaxies more accurately. Using this L_IR, we constructed luminosity functions of infrared galaxies at a median redshift of z=0.031, with 4 times larger sample than previous work. The LF agrees well with that at z=0.0082 (RBGS), showing smooth and continuous evolution toward higher redshift LFs measured in the AKARI NEP deep field. The derived local cosmic IR luminosity density is Omega_IR=3.8x10^8 LsunMpc^-3. We separate galaxies into AGN, star-forming, and composite by using the [NII]/Ha vs [OIII]/Hb line ratios. The fraction of AGN shows a continuous increase with increasing L_IR from 25% to 90% at 910^11Lsun, coinciding the break of the both SFG and AGN IR LFs. At L_IR<10^11Lsun, SFG dominates IR Lfs. Only 1.1% of Omega_IR is produced by LIRG, and only 0.03% is by ULIRG in the local Universe. This work also provides the most accurate infrared luminosity density of the local Universe to date. Compared with high redshift results from the AKARI NEP deep survey, we observed a strong evolution of Omega_IR^SFG ~(1+z)^4.1+-0.4 and Omega_IR^AGN ~(1+z)^4.1+-0.5 (abridged)., Comment: 11 pages, 15 figures. Tidal interactions between galaxies can trigger star formation, which contributes to the global star formation rate density of the universe and could be a factor in the transformation of blue, star-forming galaxies to red, quiescent galaxies over cosmic time. We investigate tidally-triggered star formation in isolated close galaxy pairs drawn from the Prism Multi-Object Survey (PRIMUS), a low-dispersion prism redshift survey that has measured ~120,000 robust galaxy redshifts over 9.1 deg^2 out to z ~ 1. We select a sample of galaxies in isolated galaxy pairs at redshifts 0.25 < z < 0.75, with no other objects within a projected separation of 300 h^-1 kpc and dz/(1+z) = 0.01, and compare them to a control sample of isolated galaxies to test for systematic differences in their rest-frame FUV-r and NUV-r colors as a proxy for relative specific SFR. We find that galaxies in r_p < 50 h^-1 kpc pairs have bluer dust-corrected UV-r colors on average than the control galaxies by -0.134 +/- 0.045 magnitudes in FUV-r and -0.075 +/- 0.038 magnitudes in NUV-r, corresponding to a ~15-20% increase in SSFR. This indicates an enhancement in SSFR due to tidal interactions. We also find that this relative enhancement is greater for a subset of r_p < 30 h^-1 kpc pair galaxies, for which the average colors offsets are -0.193 +/- 0.065 magnitudes in FUV-r and -0.159 +/- 0.048 magnitudes in NUV-r, corresponding to a ~25-30% increase in SSFR. We test for evolution in the enhancement of tidally-triggered star formation with redshift across our sample redshift range and find marginal evidence for a decrease in SSFR enhancement from 0.25 < z < 0.5 to 0.5 < z < 0.75. Infrared (IR) luminosity is fundamental to understanding the cosmic star formation history and AGN evolution. The AKARI IR space telescope performed all sky survey in 6 IR bands (9, 18, 65, 90, 140, and 160um) with 3-10 times better sensitivity than IRAS, covering the crucial far-IR wavelengths across the peak of the dust emission. Combined with a better spatial resolution, AKARI can much more precisely measure the total infrared luminosity (L_TIR) of individual galaxies, and thus, the total infrared luminosity density in the local Universe. By fitting IR SED models, we have re-measured L_TIR of the IRAS Revised Bright Galaxy Sample. We present mid-IR monochromatic luminosity to L_TIR conversions for Spitzer 8,24um, AKARI 9,18um, IRAS 12um, WISE 12,22um, and ISO 15um filters, with scatter ranging 13-44%. The resulting AKARI IR luminosity function (LF) agrees well with that from the IRAS. We integrate the LF weighted by L_TIR to obtain a cosmic IR luminosity density of Omega_TIR= (8.5^{+1.5}_{-2.3})x 10^7 L Mpc^-3, of which 7+-1% is produced by LIRGs, and only 0.4+-0.1% is from ULIRGs in the local Universe. Once IR contributions from AGN and star-forming galaxies (SFG) are separated, SFG IR LF shows a steep decline at the bright-end. Compared with high-redshift results from the AKARI NEP deep survey, these data show a strong evolution of Omega_TIRSF propto (1+z)^4.0+-0.5, and Omega_TIRAGN propto (1+z)^4.4+-0.4. For Omega_TIRAGN, the ULIRG contribution exceeds that from LIRG already by z~1. A rapid evolution in both Omega_TIRAGN and Omega_TIRSFG suggests the correlation between star formation and black hole accretion rate continues up to higher redshifts. We compare the evolution of Omega_TIRAGN to that of X-ray luminosity density. We measure the UV-optical color dependence of galaxy clustering in the local universe. Using the clean separation of the red and blue sequences made possible by the NUV - r color-magnitude diagram, we segregate the galaxies into red, blue and intermediate "green" classes. We explore the clustering as a function of this segregation by removing the dependence on luminosity and by excluding edge-on galaxies as a means of a non-model dependent veto of highly extincted galaxies. We find that \xi (r_p, \pi) for both red and green galaxies shows strong redshift space distortion on small scales -- the "finger-of-God" effect, with green galaxies having a lower amplitude than is seen for the red sequence, and the blue sequence showing almost no distortion. On large scales, \xi (r_p, \pi) for all three samples show the effect of large-scale streaming from coherent infall. On scales 1 Mpc/h < r_p < 10 Mpc/h, the projected auto-correlation function w_p(r_p) for red and green galaxies fits a power-law with slope \gamma ~ 1.93 and amplitude r_0 ~ 7.5 and 5.3, compared with \gamma ~ 1.75 and r_0 ~ 3.9 Mpc/h for blue sequence galaxies. Compared to the clustering of a fiducial L* galaxy, the red, green, and blue have a relative bias of 1.5, 1.1, and 0.9 respectively. The w_p(r_p) for blue galaxies display an increase in convexity at ~ 1 Mpc/h, with an excess of large scale clustering. Our results suggest that the majority of blue galaxies are likely central galaxies in less massive halos, while red and green galaxies have larger satellite fractions, and preferentially reside in virialized structures. If blue sequence galaxies migrate to the red sequence via processes like mergers or quenching that take them through the green valley, such a transformation may be accompanied by a change in environment in addition to any change in luminosity and color., Comment: accepted by MNRAS

We present a source catalog from deep 26 ks GALEX observations of the Coma cluster in the far-UV (FUV; 1530 A) and near-UV (NUV; 2310 A) wavebands. The observed field is centered 0.9 deg (1.6 Mpc) south-west of the Coma core, and has full optical photometric coverage with SDSS. The catalog consists of 9700 galaxies with GALEX and SDSS photometry, including 242 spectroscopically-confirmed Coma member galaxies that range from giant spirals and elliptical galaxies to dwarf irregular and early-type galaxies. The full multi-wavelength catalog (cluster plus background galaxies) is ~80% complete to NUV=23 and FUV=23.5, and has a limiting depth at NUV=24.5 and FUV=25.0 which corresponds to a star formation rate of ~0.001 Msun/yr at the distance of Coma. Our deep GALEX observations required a two-fold approach to generating a source catalog: we used a Bayesian deblending algorithm to measure faint and compact sources (using SDSS coordinates as a position prior), and relied on the GALEX pipeline catalog for bright/extended objects. We performed simulations to assess the influence that systematic effects (e.g. object blends, source confusion, Eddington Bias) have on source detection and photometry when using both methods. The Bayesian deblending method roughly doubles the number of source detections and provides reliable photometry to a few magnitudes deeper than the GALEX pipeline catalog. This method is also free from source confusion over the UV magnitude range studied here; conversely, we estimate that the GALEX pipeline catalogs are confusion limited at magnitudes fainter than NUV~23 and FUV~24. We have measured the total UV galaxy counts using our catalog and report a ~50% excess of counts across FUV=22-23.5 and NUV=21.5-23 relative to previous GALEX measurements, which is not attributed to cluster member galaxies. We measure the projected spatial correlation function w_p(r_p) from a large sample combining GALEX ultraviolet imaging with the SDSS spectroscopic sample. We study the dependence of the clustering strength for samples selected on (NUV - r)_abs color, specific star formation rate (SSFR), and stellar mass. We find that there is a smooth transition in the clustering of galaxies as a function of this color from weak clustering among blue galaxies to stronger clustering for red galaxies. The clustering of galaxies within the "green valley" has an intermediate strength, and is consistent with that expected from galaxy groups. The results are robust to the correction for dust extinction. The comparison with simple analytical modeling suggests that the halo occupation number increases with older star formation epochs. We present the SWIRE Photometric Redshift Catalogue, 1025119 redshifts of unprecedented reliability and accuracy. Our method is based on fixed galaxy and QSO templates applied to data at 0.36-4.5 mu, and on a set of 4 infrared emission templates fitted to infrared excess data at 3.6-170 mu. The code involves two passes through the data, to try to optimize recognition of AGN dust tori. A few carefully justified priors are used and are the key to supression of outliers. Extinction, A_V, is allowed as a free parameter. We use a set of 5982 spectroscopic redshifts, taken from the literature and from our own spectroscopic surveys, to analyze the performance of our method as a function of the number of photometric bands used in the solution and the reduced chi^2. For 7 photometric bands the rms value of (z_{phot}-z_{spec})/(1+z_{spec}) is 3.5%, and the percentage of catastrophic outliers is ~1%. We discuss the redshift distributions at 3.6 and 24 mu. In individual fields, structure in the redshift distribution corresponds to clusters which can be seen in the spectroscopic redshift distribution. 10% of sources in the SWIRE photometric redshift catalogue have z >2, and 4% have z>3, so this catalogue is a huge resource for high redshift galaxies. A key parameter for understanding the evolutionary status of infrared galaxies is L_{ir}/L_{opt}, which can be interpreted as the specific star-formation rate for starbursts. For dust tori around Type 1 AGN, L_{tor}/L_{opt} is a measure of the torus covering factor and we deduce a mean covering factor of 40%., Comment: 22 pages, 23 figures. The aim of this paper is to investigate ways to optimize the accuracy of photometric redshifts for a SNAP like mission. We focus on how the accuracy of the photometric redshifts depends on the magnitude limit and signal-to-noise ratio, wave-length coverage, number of filters and their shapes and observed galaxy type. We use simulated galaxy catalogs constructed to reproduce observed galaxy luminosity functions from GOODS, and derive photometric redshifts using a template fitting method. By using a catalog that resembles real data, we can estimate the expected number density of galaxies for which photometric redshifts can be derived. We find that the accuracy of photometric redshifts is strongly dependent on the signal-to-noise (S/N) (i.e., S/N>10 is needed for accurate photometric redshifts). The accuracy of the photometric redshifts is also dependent on galaxy type, with smaller scatter for earlier type galaxies. Comparing results using different filter sets, we find that including the U-band is important for decreasing the fraction of outliers, i.e., ``catastrophic failures''. Using broad overlapping filters with resolution ~4gives better photometric redshifts compared to narrower filters (resolution >~5) with the same integration time. We find that filters with square response curves result in a slightly higher scatter, mainly due to a higher fraction of outliers at faint magnitudes. We also compare a 9-filter set to a 17-filter set, where we assume that the available exposure time per filter in the latter set is half that of the first set. We find that the 9-filter set gives more accurate redshifts for a larger number of objects and reaches higher redshift, while the 17-filter set is gives better results at bright magnitudes., Comment: 30 pages, 10 figures. We present the first measurements of the angular correlation function of galaxies selected in the far (1530 A) and near (2310 A) Ultraviolet from the GALEX survey fields overlapping SDSS DR5 in low galactic extinction regions. The area used covers 120 sqdeg (GALEX - MIS) down to magnitude AB = 22, yielding a total of 100,000 galaxies. The mean correlation length is ~ 3.7 \pm 0.6 Mpc and no significant trend is seen for this value as a function of the limiting apparent magnitude or between the GALEX bands. This estimate is close to that found from samples of blue galaxies in the local universe selected in the visible, and similar to that derived at z ~ 3 for LBGs with similar rest frame selection criteria. This result supports models that predict anti-biasing of star forming galaxies at low redshift, and brings an additional clue to the downsizing of star formation at z<1., Comment: Accepted for publication in GALEX Special ApJs, December 2007

We analyze the clustering properties of ultraviolet selected galaxies by using GALEX-SDSS data at z<0.6 and CFHTLS deep u' imaging at z=1. These datasets provide a unique basis at z< 1 which can be directly compared with high redshift samples built with similar selection criteria. We discuss the dependence of the correlation function parameters (r0, delta) on the ultraviolet luminosity as well as the linear bias evolution. We find that the bias parameter shows a gradual decline from high (b > 2) to low redshift (b ~ 0.79^{+0.1}_{-0.08}). When accounting for the fraction of the star formation activity enclosed in the different samples, our results suggest that the bulk of star formation migrated from high mass dark matter halos at z>2 (10^12 < M_min < 10^13 M_sun, located in high density regions), to less massive halos at low redshift (M_min < 10^12 M_sun, located in low density regions). We describe the calibration status and data products pertaining to the GR2 and GR3 data releases of the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX). These releases have identical pipeline calibrations that are significantly improved over the GR1 data release. GALEX continues to survey the sky in the Far Ultraviolet (FUV, ~154 nm) and Near Ultraviolet (NUV, ~232 nm) bands, providing simultaneous imaging with a pair of photon counting, microchannel plate, delay line readout detectors. These 1.25 degree field-of-view detectors are well-suited to ultraviolet observations because of their excellent red rejection and negligible background. A dithered mode of observing and photon list output pose complex requirements on the data processing pipeline, entangling detector calibrations and aspect reconstruction algorithms. Recent improvements have achieved photometric repeatability of 0.05 and 0.03 mAB in the FUV and NUV, respectively. We have detected a long term drift of order 1% FUV and 6% NUV over the mission. Astrometric precision is of order 0.5" RMS in both bands. In this paper we provide the GALEX user with a broad overview of the calibration issues likely to be confronted in the current release. We studied the morphology of galaxies in the Chandra Deep Field South using ACS multi-wavelength data from the Great Observatories Origin Deep Survey and 524 spectroscopic redshifts from the VIMOS VLT Deep Survey completed with 2874 photometric redshift computed from COMBO-17 multi-color data. The rest-frame B-band makes it possible to discriminate two morphological types in an asymmetry-concentration diagram: bulge- and disk-dominated galaxies. The rest-frame color index $B-I$ is found to be very correlated with the morphological classification: wholly bulge-dominated galaxies are redder than disk-dominated galaxies. However color allowed us to distinguish a population of faint blue bulge-dominated galaxies ($B-I<0.9$), whose nature is still unclear. Using the rest-frame B-band classification from $z\sim0.15$ up to $z\sim1.1$, we quantified the evolution of the proportion of morphological types as a function of the redshift. Our large sample allowed us to compute luminosity functions per morphological type in rest-frame B-band. The bulge-dominated population is found to be composite: on the one hand the red ($(B-I)\_{AB}>0.9$), bright galaxies, which seem to increase in density toward low redshifts. We present the results of a determination of the galaxy luminosity function at ultraviolet wavelengths at redshifts of $z=0.0-0.1$ from GALEX data. We determined the luminosity function in the GALEX FUV and NUV bands from a sample of galaxies with UV magnitudes between 17 and 20 that are drawn from a total of 56.73 deg^2 of GALEX fields overlapping the b_j-selected 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey. The resulting luminosity functions are fainter than previous UV estimates and result in total UV luminosity densities of 10^(25.55+/-0.12) ergs s^-1 Hz^-1 Mpc^-3 and 10^(25.72+/-0.12) ergs s^-1 Hz^-1 Mpc^-3 at 1530 Ang. and 2310 Ang., respectively. Number Counts of galaxies in two GALEX bands (FUV: 1530A and NUV: 2310A, both in AB magnitudes) are reported. They provide for the first time in the literature homogeneously calibrated number counts of UV galaxies covering continuously a very wide range of UV magnitude (14 -- 23.8). Both the FUV and NUV counts are inconsistent with a non-evolution model, while they are in good agreement with evolution models (essentially luminosity evolution) derived from the high-z UV luminosity functions of Arnouts et al. (2004). It is found that the contribution from galaxies detected by GALEX to the UV background is 0.68+-0.10 nW m-2 sr-1 at 1530A and 0.99+-0.15 nW m-2 sr-1 at 2310A. [ABRIDGED] Using the Gaussian+Schechter composite luminosity functions measured from the ESO-Sculptor Survey (de Lapparent et al. 2003), we obtain evidence for evolution in the late spectral class containing late-type Spiral (Sc+Sd) and dwarf Irregular (dI) galaxies. This evolution is detected as an increase of the Sc+Sd+dI galaxy density which can be modeled as either n(z)~1+3(z-0.15) or n(z) ~ (1+z)^2 using the currently favored cosmological parameters Omega_m=0.3 and Omega_Lambda=0.7, with an uncertainty in both evolution rates of order of unity. For Omega_m=1.0 and Omega_Lambda=0.0, the linear and power-law evolution rates are 4 and 2.5 resp. Both models yield a good match to the ESS BVRc redshift distributions to 21-22 mag and to the number-counts to 23-23.5 mag, which probe the galaxy distribution to redshifts z~0.5 and z~1.0 resp. This analysis illustrates how Gaussian+Schechter composite luminosity functions provide more robust constraints on the evolution rate than pure Schechter functions. The detected density evolution indicates that mergers could play a significant role in the evolution of late-type Spiral and dwarf Irregular galaxies. However, the ESO-Sculptor density increase with redshift could also be caused by a ~1 mag brightening of the Sc+Sd+dI galaxies at z~0.5 and a ~1.5-2.0 mag brightening at z~1, which is compatible with the expected passive brightening of Sc galaxies at these redshifts. Distinguishing between luminosity and density evolution is a major difficulty as these produce the same effect on the redshift and magnitude distributions. [ABRIDGED] We present the first statistical analysis of the complete ESO-Sculptor redshift survey (ESS). The flux-calibrated sample of 617 galaxy spectra with R_c<20.5 is separated into 3 spectral classes (early, intermediate, and late). We report in detail on the spectral classification, the polynomial K-corrections, and all sources of corresponding random and systematic errors. The derived luminosity functions (LF) in the Johnson-Cousins B and Rc bands are in agreement with the results from the comparable CNOC2 survey (Lin et al. 1999), whereas the ESS provides the first estimates of LFs per spectral type in the Johnson V band. A renewed interpretation of the galaxy LFs from a redshift survey are obtained by fitting the ESS LFs with composite functions based on the local LFs per morphological type (Sandage, Binggeli & Tammann 1985; Jerjen & Tammann 1997). As good or better fits than with pure Schechter functions are obtained using: for the early-type LF, a two-wing Gaussian; for the intermediate-type LF, the sum of a Gaussian modeling the Spiral galaxies and a steep Schechter function (alpha=-1.5) representing the dwarf elliptical galaxies; for the late-type LF, a similar composite function with a flat or weaker slope (-0.80.1 which separates the giant and dwarf galaxy populations., Comment: 33 Pages, 13 color figures, A&A Latex macro. (abridged) The evolution of galaxy clustering from z=0 to z=4.5 is analyzed using the angular correlation function and the photometric redshift distribution of galaxies brighter than I_{AB}\le 28.5 in the HDF North. The reliability of the photometric redshift estimates is discussed on the basis of the available spectroscopic redshifts, comparing different codes and investigating the effects of photometric errors. The redshift bins in which the clustering properties are measured are then optimized to take into account the uncertainties of the photometric redshifts. We present the results of the detailed surface photometry of a sample of elliptical galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field. In the (surface_brightness-effective_radius) plane, the elliptical galaxies of the HDF turn out to follow a `rest frame' Kormendy relation, once the appropriate K+E corrections are applied. This evidence, linked to the dynamical information gathered by Steidel et al. (1996), indicates that these galaxies, even at z ~ 2-3, lie in the Fundamental Plane, in a virial equilibrium condition.
