Abstract

International audience; To better constrain late Neogene denudation of the Himalayas, we analysed in situ 10Be concentrations in 17 Neogene sediment samples of the Surai section (central Nepal) and two modern sediment samples of the Rapti River. We first refined the depositional ages of the Surai section from 36 new paleomagnetic analyses, five 26Al/10Be burial ages, and, based on the Dynamic Time Warping algorithm, 104 automatically calculated likely magnetostratigraphic correlations. We also traced changing sediment sources using major element and Sr‐Nd isotopic data, finding at 4–3 Ma a switch from a large, trans‐Himalayan river to a river draining only the Lesser Himalaya and Siwalik piedmont, increasing the contribution of recycled sediments at that time. 10Be concentrations in Neogene sediments range from (1.00 ± 0.36) to (5.22 ± 0.98) × 103 at g–1 and decrease with stratigraphic age. Based on a flood plain transport model, our refined age model, and assuming a drainage change at 4–3 Ma, we reconstructed 10Be concentrations at the time of deposition. Assuming cosmogenic production rates similar to those of the modern basins, we calculated palaeodenudation rates of 0.9 ± 0.5 to 3.9 ± 2.7 mm a–1 from ca. 6 to 3 Ma in the palaeo‐Karnali basin and 0.6 ± 0.2 to 1.6 ± 0.8 mm a–1 since ca. 3 Ma in the palaeo‐Rapti basin. Given the uncertainties and similar modern values of ~2 mm a–1, the palaeo‐Karnali denudation rates may have been steady at ~1.7 ± 0.3 mm a–1 for the last ca. 6 Ma. A transient acceleration of the denudation in the palaeo‐Rapti basin of ~1.5 mm a–1 since ca. 1.5 Ma was likely due to the reworking of older, 10Be‐depleted Siwalik sediments in the foreland. If true, this steadiness of the denudation rates may suggest that Quaternary glaciations did not largely affect Himalayan denudation.

Abstract

Rock art in an inland cave on the island of Lifou, New Caledonia, has been radiocarbon dated. A cluster of early paintings date to 2500 years ago, soon after the arrival of the first settlers, who must have quickly gone inland probably in pursuit of fresh water, available near the cave. They left their mark on the cave in the form of numerous hand stencils. During the first millennium AD, later generations of artists used the same cave, drawing birds and a circular sign for water still recognised by the present community. Abstract

To understand the timing of deglaciation of the northernmost marine-terminating glaciers of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet (CIS), we obtained 26 10Be surface-exposure ages from glacially scoured bedrock surfaces in Prince William Sound (PWS), Alaska. We sampled six elevation transects between sea level and 620 m and spanning a distance of 14 to 70 km along ice flow paths. Most transect age–elevation patterns could not be explained by a simple model of thinning ice; the patterns provide evidence for lingering ice cover and possible inheritance. A reliable set of 20 ages ranges between 17.4 ± 2.0 and 11.6 ± 2.8 ka and indicates ice receded from northwestern PWS around 14.3 ± 1.6 ka, thinned at a rate of ~120–160 m/ka, and retreated from sea-level sites at 12.9 ± 1.1 ka at a rate of 20 m/yr. The retreat rate likely slowed as glaciers retreated into northern PWS. These results are consistent with the growing body of reported deglacial constraints on collapse of ice sheets along the Alaska margin indicating collapse of the CIS soon after 17 ka. These data are consistent with paleotemperature data indicating that a warming North Pacific Ocean caused catastrophic collapse of this part of the CIS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A multidisciplinary study was conducted in a newly discovered Paleolithic locality, named ‘Evron Landfill. This locality is a part of the Lower Paleolithic complex of ‘Evron located at the western Galilee, Israel. Examination of artifacts has enabled the cultural attribution of ‘Evron Landfill to the Early Acheulian, while detailed paleomagnetic stratigraphy places the hominin occupations near the Brunhes–Matuyama transition ~0.77 Ma. This age is constrained by cosmogenic isotope burial dating of the sediments overlying the Paleolithic finds, providing a minimum age of ~0.66±0.11 Ma for hominin activity at the site. These results are further supported by the biochronological information derived from the faunal assemblage. Comparative analyses of faunal remains and lithic artifacts from ‘Evron Landfill demonstrate similarities to the assemblages from the Early Acheulian site of Evron Quarry, located ~300 m to the south. Pedo-sedimentological analyses indicate that hominin activity took place in a marsh environment in proximity to the Mediterranean coast, which probably fluctuated in both space and time with a fluvial environment. In addition, this study provides important data about ancient coastal activity during the early to middle Pleistocene.

Abstract

Fossil corals from Tahiti provide evidence of a large sea-level jump approximately 13,800 calendar years before present (BP). This corresponds to meltwater pulse 1A in the Barbados coral records. The Tahiti record shows a coincidence between the meltwater pulse and an intense cooling event that followed the commencement of the Bolling-Allerod warm period, but preceded the Younger Dryas cold event by approximately 1,000 years. The Tahiti corals are quite distant from plate boundaries and sufficiently remote from the locations of large former ice sheets. These corals may be tectonically more stable than those in the Barbados.

Abstract

The atmospheric radiocarbon ratio is sensitive to changes in the other global carbon cycle reservoirs and so the high 14C concentration in the atmosphere from the Younger Dryas period indicates a significant change. Sediments from Lake Gosciaz in Poland are used to trace climate changes and atmospheric radiocarbon for the Younger Dryas and early Holocene periods. The evidence suggests that the deep ocean ventilation rate decreased during the Younger Dryas, accounting for the high 14C concentration, most likely due to a reduced formation intensity of North Atlantic Deep Water.

Abstract

International audience; Located at the northeastern corner of the Adria microplate, the Alps-Dinarides junction represents a key region for understanding how the Adria microplate interacts with stable Europe. However, little is known on how the present-day deformation imposed by the rotation of the Adria microplate is absorbed across the Dinarides. Using morphotectonic analysis based on satellite and aerial images, accurate topographical maps, and digital elevation models combined with field investigations, we mapped in detail the three main active faults of the Northern Dinarides. Geomorphic and geological cumulative displacements ranging from a few meters to several kilometers have been identified on those faults and dated for the most recent ones using 36 Cl exposure dating. Those results yielded a total right-lateral motion of 3.8 ± 0.7 mm/yr oriented N317. Comparing our results with the motion expected from Adria rotation models suggests that the Northern Dinarides absorbs most of the predicted Adria-Eurasia motion, thus representing the eastern boundary of the microplate. However, a significant E-W component is lacking, suggesting that part of the stress imposed by the microplate rotation is transferred farther to the east. Finally, bounds placed on the Plio-Pleistocene kinematics confirm that faulting onset occurred during the Early Pliocene and evidence a significant kinematic change at the Early/Middle Pleistocene boundary.

International audience; We recover the Holocene earthquake history of seven seismogenic normal faults in the Fucino system, central Italy. We collected 800 samples from the well-preserved limestone scarps of the faults and modeled their 36Cl concentrations to derive their seismic exhumation history. We found that > 30 large earthquakes broke the faults in synchrony over the last 12 ka. The seven faults released strain at the same periods of time, 12-9 ka, 5-3 ka, and 1.5-1 ka. We used isotopic records from 110 deep-sea cores, 20 of which are accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS)-14C dated and 30 of which have high (>8 cm/kyr) sedimentation rates, enabling a resolution of about 120 years. Paleotemperature estimates are based on species counts of planktonic foraminifera in 18 cores. The •5180 and •513C distributions depict three main modes of surface circulation: (1) The Holocene-style interglacial mode which largely persisted over the last 12.8 •4C ka, and probably during large parts of stage 3. (2) The peak glacial mode showing a cyclonic gyre in the, at least, seasonally ice-free Nordic Seas and a meltwater lens west of Ireland. Based on geostrophic forcing, it possibly turned clockwise, blocked the S-N flow across the eastern Iceland-Shetland ridge, and enhanced the Irminger current around west Iceland. It remains unclear whether surface-water density was sufficient for deepwater formation west of Norway. (3) A meltwater regime culminating during early glacial Termination I, when a great meltwater lens off northern Norway probably induced a clockwise circulation reaching south up to Faeroe, the northward inflow of Irminger Current water dominated the Icelandic Sea, and deepwater convection was stopped. In contrast to circulation modes two and three, the Holocene-style circulation mode appears most stable, even unaffected by major meltwater pools originating from the Scandinavian ice sheet, such as during •80 event 3.1 and the B611ing. Meltwater phases markedly influenced the European continental climate by suppressing the "heat pump" of the Atlantic salinity conveyor belt. During the peak glacial, melting icebergs blocked the eastward advection of warm surface water toward Great Britain, thus accelerating buildup of the great European ice sheets; in the early deglacial, meltwater probably induced a southward flow of cold water along Norway, which led to the Oldest Dryas cold spell.

Abstract

The coasts of Syna, located in the central part of the Levant, seem to have expenenced during the last 6,000 years an original evolution, somewhat different from that of the littoral more to the north or south. Tectonics are indeed the main cause of recent coastal changes and two raised shorelines mark reference levels at + 1.2 m and + 0.6 m. However, vertical displacements might have been non unidirectional and more complex than two simple uplifts of the order of half a metre each, like those reported during the same period from nearby areas in Turkey and the Lebanon. Onginal features of the Syrian coast have been evidenced by a pluridisciplinary approach, associating observations on the geomorphology of sedimentary environments and of the limestone bedrock to data on the biological zonation of bioconstructions and to neotectonic events., Le littoral syrien est situé au centre des côtes du Levant, mais il semble affecté d'une évolution originale au cours des six mille dernières années par rapport aux rivages situés au nord et au sud. Si la tectonique est bien le moteur principal des variations récentes de la ligne de rivage et si deux niveaux-repères sont bien présents, à + 1,20 m et à + 0,60 m, les mouvements enregistrés ne sont probablement pas simples, positifs ou négatifs, et ne se réduisent pas à deux soulèvements d'une ampleur moyenne d'un demi-mètre comme cela semble avoir été le cas en Turquie et au Liban au cours de la même période. International audience; La méthode de datation par le carbone 14 a permis l'établissement d'une échelle chronologique du Quaternaire Supérieur et a contribué à ladécouverte de phénomènes insoupçonnés comme l'existence de variations climatiques abruptes et de grande amplitude pendant la dernière période glaciaire et la déglaciation qui l'a terminée. L'effort continu pour comparer les âges carbone 14 avec les âges calendaires a été maintenant étendu au delà de 30 000 ans, même si le nombre de mesures est encore trop petit pour permettre l'établissement d'une courbe de calibration précise au delà des dix mille dernières années. La comparaison des variations du rapport 14C/12C de l'atmosphère avec celles du champ magnétique terrestre (déduites de l'analyse des carottes de sédiments marins) suggère que les variations de l'activité 14C de l'atmosphère sont dues pour une très large part aux fluctuations de l'intensité du champ magnétique terrestre dans le passé. Plus généralement, ces variations joueraient un rôle majeur dans les variations des teneurs des autres cosmonucléides, comme 1°Be, dans les échantillons naturels.

Abstract

International audience; Radiocarbon dating series, bulk sediment, and organic carbon flux from various Atlantic deep-sea regions reveal that the thickness of the bioturbated zone increases by 2 cm if food supply increases by 1 gCm-2yr-1 (r = 0.8). Bulk sediment accumulation rates do not influence the depth of bioturbational mixing under normal pelagic sedimentary conditions. We believe that this relationship between nutrient supply and benthic mixing can be used for a quantitative and time-variable unmixing procedure to improve high-resolution stratigraphic correlations and paleoclimatic interpretations of deep-sea records.
