This paper aims at assessing the gain in accuracy for T-tail flutter point prediction obtained by a strip theory approach used to enhance common linear potential flow theory based unsteady aerodynamic forces. The common approach neglects unsteady aerodynamic forces induced by lifting surface inplane and roll motion, which are crucial for T-tail flutter. The strip theory approach computes these additional terms based on aerodynamic forces from a steady state reference condition and the modal data of the underlying structural model. The correction is done by superposing the additional terms with the aerodynamic forces from the standard procedure. Generalized aerodynamic forces produced by the common approach and the enhanced approach in addition to resulting flutter points and aerodynamic Modal Power Transfer matrices are compared to those computed with aerodynamic forces from the linearized frequency domain CFD solver TAU-LFD. Two Mach numbers of 0.4 and 0.69 are chosen for this assessment. The model for the study is a generic T-tail with unswept and non-tapered vertical and horizontal tail planes. Significant improvements of the flutter points of the T-tail for both Mach numbers can be achieved by the enhancement in relation to the CFD approach. A comparison of generalized aerodynamic forces and aerodynamic Modal Power Transfer values, however, reveals strengths and weaknesses of the method

Die Hecksektion des im Entwurf befindlichen, hybrid-elektrischen Motorseglers FVA 30 der Flugwissenschaftlichen Vereinigung Aachen wird auf seine dynamische und aeroelastische Stabilität untersucht, um mögliche Auswirkungen auf den Design-Prozess abzuschätzen. Das V-Leitwerk mit elektrisch angetriebenen Propellern an den Spitzen wird hierzu bzgl. klassischem Leitwerksflattern, Bodenresonanz und Whirl-Flattern untersucht. Leitwerksflattern wird mittels numerischer Parameterstudien in MSC Nastran analysiert. Zur Stabilitätsuntersuchung bzgl. Bodenresonanz kommt eine Kombination aus Parameterstudien mit einem analytischen Modell und numerischen Validierungsrechnungen mit der MKS-Umgebung SIMPACK zum Einsatz, während Whirl-Flattern in Studien mit einer Streifentheorie für den starren Propeller sowie MKS-Simulationen bewertet wird. Die Untersuchungen zeigen, dass im betrachteten Parameterraum als einzige Instabilität ein Ruderflattern durch Kopplung der Rudereigenform bei freier Steuerung mit der ersten Schlagbiegung des Leitwerks auftritt. Diese lässt sich durch ausreichenden Rudermassenausgleich verhindern. Gegen Whirl-Flattern zeigt das Leitwerk hohe Reserven bzgl. der ersten Eigenfrequenzen der Hauptstruktur. Eine Instabilität durch Bodenresonanz ist aufgrund der Geometrie der Propellerblätter gänzlich ausgeschlossen. Vergleiche der MKS-Simulationen mit den Parameterstudien bestätigt diese Ergebnisse. Somit haben aeroelastische Randbedingungen kaum Auswirkungen auf die weitere Konstruktion des Leitwerks der FVA 30.

The secure entry into service of a new rotor test rig requires the assessment of the dynamic and aeroelastic rotor stability. To this end, a multibody dynamics based numerical model was developed and coupled with an unsteady aerodynamic model based on Wagner's function and related enhancements for the general motion of an airfoil section considering heave and pitch motion. The simulation model uses modelling techniques for the setup of a linearized model and allows both, the investigation of ground resonance and flutter for the rig with clamped and articulated rotor blades in frequency domain. With respect to ground resonance, the dynamic examination of the two- and four-bladed rotor configurations shows a mechanically stable behaviour for the clamped and articulated rotor blades with lead-lag hinge in the planned rotor speed range up to 65 Hz. The aeroelastic assessment shows a damped behaviour for the configurations with clamped rotor blades, whilst the articulated rotor with lead-lag hinge is unstable beyond rotational speeds of 25 Hz for the two-bladed rotor and requires additional damping measures.
