This functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study examined resting-state (RS) connectivity in adolescent and adult patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) using symptom provocation paradigms. Differential food reward mechanisms were investigated through separate assessments of responses to food images and low-caloric/high-caloric food consumption. Thirteen young (≤ 21 years) and seventeen adult (> 21 years) patients with AN and age-matched controls underwent two stimulus-driven fMRI sessions involving RS scans before and after the presentation of food-related stimuli and food consumption. Graph theory and machine learning were used for analyzing the fMRI and clinical data. Healthy controls (HCs) showed widespread developmental changes, while young participants with AN exhibited cerebellum differences for high-calorie food. Young individuals with AN displayed increased connectivity during the consumption of potato chips compared to zucchini, with no differences in adults with AN. Multiparametric machine learning accurately distinguished young individuals with AN from healthy controls based on RS connectivity following food visual stimulation (“anticipatory”) and consumption (“consummatory”). This study highlights the differential food reward mechanisms and minimal developmental changes in RS connectivity from youth to adulthood in individuals with AN compared to healthy controls. Young individuals with AN demonstrated heightened reactivity to high-caloric foods, while adults showed decreased responsiveness, potentially due to desensitization. These findings shed light on aberrant eating behaviors in individuals with AN and contribute to our understanding of the chronicity of the disease.

Abstract Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is a leading global cause of mortality and morbidity. Improving long-term outcome predictions after thrombectomy can enhance treatment quality by supporting clinical decision-making. With the advent of interpretable deep learning methods in recent years, it is now possible to develop trustworthy, high-performing prediction models. This study introduces an uncertainty-aware, graph deep learning model that predicts endovascular thrombectomy outcomes using clinical features and imaging biomarkers. The model targets long-term functional outcomes, defined by the three-month modified Rankin Score (mRS), and mortality rates. A sample of 220 AIS patients in the anterior circulation who underwent endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) was included, with 81 (37%) demonstrating good outcomes (mRS $$\le$$ ≤ 2). The performance of the different algorithms evaluated was comparable, with the maximum validation under the curve (AUC) reaching 0.87 using graph convolutional networks (GCN) for mRS prediction and 0.86 using fully connected networks (FCN) for mortality prediction. Moderate performance was obtained at admission (AUC of 0.76 using GCN), which improved to 0.84 post-thrombectomy and to 0.89 a day after stroke. Reliable uncertainty prediction of the model could be demonstrated.

Abstract Focal cortical dysplasia type II (FCDII) is the most common cause of drug-resistant focal epilepsy in children. Herein, we performed a deep histopathology-based genotype–phenotype analysis to further elucidate the clinico-pathological and genetic presentation of FCDIIa compared to FCDIIb. Seventeen individuals with histopathologically confirmed diagnosis of FCD ILAE Type II and a pathogenic variant detected in brain derived DNA whole-exome sequencing or mTOR gene panel sequencing were included in this study. Clinical data were directly available from each contributing centre. Histopathological analyses were performed from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue samples using haematoxylin–eosin and immunohistochemistry for NF-SMI32, NeuN, pS6, p62, and vimentin. Ten individuals carried loss-of-function variants in the GATOR1 complex encoding genes DEPDC5 (n = 7) and NPRL3 (n = 3), or gain-of-function variants in MTOR (n = 7). Whereas individuals with GATOR1 variants only presented with FCDIIa, i.e., lack of balloon cells, individuals with MTOR variants presented with both histopathology subtypes, FCDIIa and FCDIIb. Interestingly, 50% of GATOR1-positive cases showed a unique and predominantly vacuolizing phenotype with p62 immunofluorescent aggregates in autophagosomes. All cases with GATOR1 alterations had neurosurgery in the frontal lobe and the majority was confined to the cortical ribbon not affecting the white matter. This pattern was reflected by subtle or negative MRI findings in seven individuals with GATOR1 variants. Nonetheless, all individuals were seizure-free after surgery except four individuals carrying a DEPDC5 variant. We describe a yet underrecognized genotype–phenotype correlation of GATOR1 variants with FCDIIa in the frontal lobe. These lesions were histopathologically characterized by abnormally vacuolizing cells suggestive of an autophagy-altered phenotype. In contrast, individuals with FCDIIb and brain somatic MTOR variants showed larger lesions on MRI including the white matter, suggesting compromised neural cell migration.

ObjectiveFunctional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) visualizes brain structures at increasingly higher resolution and better signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) as field strength increases. Yet, mapping the blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) response to distinct neuronal processes continues to be challenging. Here, we investigated the characteristics of 7 T-fMRI compared to 3 T-fMRI in the human brain beyond the effect of increased SNR and verified the benefits of 7 T-fMRI in the detection of tiny, highly specific modulations of functional connectivity in the resting state following a motor task.Methods18 healthy volunteers underwent two resting state and a stimulus driven measurement using a finger tapping motor task at 3 and 7 T, respectively. The SNR for each field strength was adjusted by targeted voxel size variation to minimize the effect of SNR on the field strength specific outcome. Spatial and temporal characteristics of resting state ICA, network graphs, and motor task related activated areas were compared. Finally, a graph theoretical approach was used to detect resting state modulation subsequent to a simple motor task.ResultsSpatial extensions of resting state ICA and motor task related activated areas were consistent between field strengths, but temporal characteristics varied, indicating that 7 T achieved a higher functional specificity of the BOLD response than 3 T-fMRI. Following the motor task, only 7 T-fMRI enabled the detection of highly specific connectivity modulations representing an “offline replay” of previous motor activation. Modulated connections of the motor cortex were directly linked to brain regions associated with memory consolidation.ConclusionThese findings reveal how memory processing is initiated even after simple motor tasks, and that it begins earlier than previously shown. Thus, the superior capability of 7 T-fMRI to detect subtle functional dynamics promises to improve diagnostics and therapeutic assessment of neurological diseases.

Background: Due to the absence of robust biomarkers, and the low sensitivity and specificity of routine imaging techniques, the differential diagnosis between Parkinson’s disease (PD) and multiple system atrophy (MSA) is challenging. High-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) opened up new possibilities regarding the analysis of pathological alterations associated with neurodegenerative processes. Recently, we have shown that quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) enables visualization and quantification of two major histopathologic hallmarks observed in MSA: reduced myelin density and iron accumulation in the basal ganglia of a transgenic murine model of MSA. It is therefore emerging as a promising imaging modality on the differential diagnosis of Parkinsonian syndromes. Objectives: To assess QSM on high-field MRI for the differential diagnosis of PD and MSA. Methods: We assessed 23 patients (nine PDs and 14 MSAs) and nine controls using QSM on 3T and 7T MRI scanners at two academic centers. Results: We observed increased susceptibility in MSA at 3T in prototypical subcortical and brainstem regions. Susceptibility measures of putamen, pallidum, and substantia nigra reached excellent diagnostic accuracy to separate both synucleinopathies. Increase toward 100% sensitivity and specificity was achieved using 7T MRI in a subset of patients. Magnetic susceptibility correlated with age in all groups, but not with disease duration in MSA. Sensitivity and specificity were particularly high for possible MSA, and reached 100% in the putamen. Conclusion: Putaminal susceptibility measures, in particular on ultra-high-field MRI, may distinguish MSA patients from both, PD and controls, allowing an early and sensitive diagnosis of MSA.

Background and purpose: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a crucial factor in optimal treatment planning for stereotactic radiosurgery. To further the awareness of possible errors in MRI, this work aimed to investigate the magnitude of susceptibility induced MRI distortions for intracranial organs at risk (OARs) and test the effectiveness of actively shimming these distortions. Materials and methods: Distortion maps for 45 exams of 42 patients (18 on a 1.5 T MRI scanner, 27 on a 3 T MRI scanner) were calculated based on a high-bandwidth double-echo gradient echo sequence. The investigated OARs were brainstem, chiasm, eyes, and optic nerves. The influence of active shimming was investigated by comparing unshimmed 1.5 T data with shimmed 3 T data and comparing the results to a model based prediction. Results: The median distortion for the different OARs was found to be between 0.13 and 0.18 mm for 1.5 T and between 0.11 and 0.13 mm for 3 T. The maximum distortion was found to be between 1.3 and 1.7 mm for 1.5 T and between 1.1 and 1.4 mm for 3 T. The variation of values was much higher for 1.5 T than for 3 T across all investigated OARs. Active shimming was found to reduce distortions by a factor of 2.3 to 2.9 compared to the expected values. Conclusions: Using a safety margin for OARs of 1 mm would have encompassed 99.8% of the distortions. Since distortions are inversely proportional to the readout bandwidth, they can be further reduced by increasing the bandwidth. Additional error sources like gradient nonlinearities need to be addressed separately.

Abstract Objective Hematoma enlargement (HE) is associated with clinical outcomes after supratentorial intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). This study evaluates whether HE characteristics and association with functional outcome differ in deep versus lobar ICH. Methods Pooled analysis of individual patient data between January 2006 and December 2015 from a German‐wide cohort study (RETRACE, I + II) investigating ICH related to oral anticoagulants (OAC) at 22 participating centers, and from one single‐center registry (UKER‐ICH) investigating non‐OAC‐ICH patients. Altogether, 1954 supratentorial ICH patients were eligible for outcome analyses, which were separately conducted or controlled for OAC, that is, vitamin‐K‐antagonists (VKA, n = 1186) and non‐vitamin‐K‐antagonist‐oral‐anticoagulants (NOAC, n = 107). Confounding was addressed using propensity score matching, cox regression modeling and multivariate modeling. Main outcomes were occurrence, extent, and timing of HE (>33%/>6 mL) and its association with 3‐month functional outcome. Results Occurrence of HE was not different after deep versus lobar ICH in patients with non‐OAC‐ICH (39/356 [11.0%] vs. 36/305 [11.8%], P = 0.73), VKA‐ICH (249/681 [36.6%] vs. 183/505 [36.2%], P = 0.91), and NOAC‐ICH (21/69 [30.4%] vs. 12/38 [31.6%], P = 0.90). HE extent did not differ after non‐OAC‐ICH (deep:+59% [40–122] vs. lobar:+74% [37–124], P = 0.65), but both patients with VKA‐ICH and NOAC‐ICH showed greater HE extent after deep ICH [VKA‐ICH, deep: +94% [54–199] vs. lobar: +56% [35–116], P

Background and Purpose: The optimal acute management of patients with large vessel occlusion (LVO) and minor clinical deficits on admission [National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) ≤ 4] remains to be elucidated. The aim of the present study was to investigate the prognostic factors and therapeutic management of those patients.Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, we investigated (1) all patients with acute ischemic stroke due to an LVO who underwent mechanical thrombectomy (MT) and (2) all patients with minor clinical deficits (NIHSS ≤ 4) on admission due to an LVO between January 2013 and December 2016 at the University Medical Center Erlangen. We dichotomized management of patients with minor deficits treated with MT for analysis according to immediate mechanical thrombectomy (IT) and initial medical management with rescue intervention (MM) in case of secondary deterioration. Primary endpoints were secondary deterioration, in-hospital mortality, and functional outcome on day 90 (dichotomized modified Rankin Scale 0–2: favorable, 3–6: poor).Results: Two hundred twenty-three patients (83% with anterior circulation stroke, 13 (6%) with minor deficits) treated with MT and 88 patients with minor deficits due to LVO [13 (15%) treated with MT] were included. Secondary deterioration (n = 19) was independently associated with poor outcome in patients with minor deficits and LVO [odds ratio (OR), 0.060; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.013–0.280], which in turn was associated with the occlusion site [especially M1 occlusion: 11 (58%) vs. 3 (4%) in patients without secondary deterioration, p < 0.0001]. IT (n = 8) was associated with a lower intrahospital mortality compared to MM (n = 5; 13 vs. 80%; OR, 0.036; 95% CI, 0.002–0.741). Seven of eight patients with IT survived until discharge, with 29% showing a favorable functional outcome on day 90.Conclusions: Secondary deterioration is associated with poor outcome in patients with LVO and minor deficits, which in turn was associated with occlusion site. Future randomized controlled trials should assess whether selected patients, depending on occlusion site and associated characteristics, may benefit from MT.

Hippocampal-sparing radiotherapy (HSR) is a promising approach to alleviate cognitive side effects following cranial radiotherapy. Microstructural brain changes after irradiation have been demonstrated using Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI). However, evidence is conflicting for certain parameters and anatomic structures. This study examines the effects of radiation on white matter and hippocampal microstructure using DTI and evaluates whether these may be mitigated using HSR. A total of 35 tumor patients undergoing a prospective randomized controlled trial receiving either conventional or HSR underwent DTI before as well as 6, 12, 18, 24, and 30 (±3) months after radiotherapy. Fractional Anisotropy (FA), Mean Diffusivity (MD), Axial Diffusivity (AD), and Radial Diffusivity (RD) were measured in the hippocampus (CA), temporal, and frontal lobe white matter (TL, FL), and corpus callosum (CC). Longitudinal analysis was performed using linear mixed models. Analysis of the entire patient collective demonstrated an overall FACC decrease and RDCC increase compared to baseline in all follow-ups; ADCC decreased after 6 months, and MDCC increased after 12 months (p ≤ 0.001, 0.001, 0.007, 0.018). ADTL decreased after 24 and 30 months (p ≤ 0.004, 0.009). Hippocampal FA increased after 6 and 12 months, driven by a distinct increase in ADCA and MDCA, with RDCA not increasing until 30 months after radiotherapy (p ≤ 0.011, 0.039, 0.005, 0.040, 0.019). Mean radiation dose correlated positively with hippocampal FA (p < 0.001). These findings may indicate complex pathophysiological changes in cerebral microstructures after radiation, insufficiently explained by conventional DTI models. Hippocampal microstructure differed between patients undergoing HSR and conventional cranial radiotherapy after 6 months with a higher ADCA in the HSR subgroup (p ≤ 0.034).

Objective: Early enteral nutrition (EEN) represents the current standard of care for patients treated in general intensive care units (ICU). Specific nutritional recommendations for patients receiving dedicated neurocritical care are not established. This study investigated associations of EEN with clinical outcomes for patients suffering from intracerebral hemorrhage treated at a neurological ICU (NICU).Methods: This retrospective cohort study included patients admitted to the NICU with atraumatic ICH over a 4-year period. Nutritional data, demographic, clinical, radiological, and laboratory characteristics were assessed. EEN was defined as any enteral nutrition within 48 hours after admission. Comparisons were undertaken for patients with EEN vs. those without, further propensity score (PS) matching (caliper 0.2; one: many) was used to account for baseline imbalances. Primary outcome was the modified Rankin Scale (0–3 = favorable, 4–6 = unfavorable) at 12 months, secondary outcomes comprised perihemorrhagic edema (PHE) volume, infectious complications during the hospital stay, and mRS at 3 months, as well as mortality rates at 3 and 12 months.Results: Of 166 ICH-patients treated at the NICU, 51 (30.7%) patients received EEN, and 115 (69.3%) patients received no EEN (nEEN). After propensity score matching, calories delivered from enteral nutrition (EEN 161.4 [106.4–192.3] kcal/day vs. nEEN 0.0 [0.0–0.0], P < 0.001) and the total calories (EEN 190.0 [126.0–357.0] kcal/day vs. nEEN 33.6 [0.0–190.0] kcal/day, P < 0.001) were significantly different during the first 48 h admitted in NICU. Functional outcome at 12 months (mRS 4–6, EEN 33/43 [76.7%] vs. nEEN, 49/64 [76. 6%]; P = 1.00) was similar in the two groups. There were neither differences in mRS at 3 months, nor in mortality rates at 3 and 12 months between the two groups. EEN did not affect incidence of infective complications or gastrointestinal adverse events during the hospital stay; however, EEN was associated with significantly less extent of PHE evolution [maximum absolute PHE (OR 0.822, 95% CI 0.706–0.957, P = 0.012); maximum relative PHE (OR 0.784, 95% CI 0.646–0.952, P = 0.014)].Conclusion: In our study, EEN was associated with reduced PHE in ICH-patients treated at a NICU. However, this observation did not translate into improved survival or functional outcome at 3 and 12 months.

Radiotherapy (RT) is commonly applied for the treatment of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). Following the planning target volume (PTV) definition procedure standardized in guidelines, a 20% risk of missing non-local recurrences is present. Purpose of this study was to evaluate whether diffusion tensor imaging (DTI)-based fiber tracking may be beneficial for PTV definition taking into account the prediction of distant recurrences. 56 GBM patients were examined with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) including DTI performed before RT after resection of the primary tumor. Follow-up MRIs were acquired in three month intervals. For the seven patients with a distant recurrence, fiber tracking was performed with three algorithms and it was evaluated whether connections existed from the primary tumor region to the distant recurrence. It depended strongly on the used tracking algorithm and the used tracking parameters whether a connection was observed. Most of the connections were weak and thus not usable for PTV definition. Only in one of the seven patients with a recurring tumor, a clear connection was present. It seems unlikely that DTI-based fiber tracking can be beneficial for predicting distant recurrences in the planning of PTVs for glioblastoma multiforme.

Abstract Background Haploinsufficiency of the class I bHLH transcription factor TCF4 causes Pitt-Hopkins syndrome (PTHS), a severe neurodevelopmental disorder, while common variants in the TCF4 gene have been identified as susceptibility factors for schizophrenia. It remains largely unknown, which brain regions are dependent on TCF4 for their development and function. Methods We systematically analyzed the expression pattern of TCF4 in the developing and adult mouse brain. We used immunofluorescent staining to identify candidate regions whose development and function depend on TCF4. In addition, we determined TCF4 expression in the developing rhesus monkey brain and in the developing and adult human brain through analysis of transcriptomic datasets and compared the expression pattern between species. Finally, we morphometrically and histologically analyzed selected brain structures in Tcf4-haploinsufficient mice and compared our morphometric findings to neuroanatomical findings in PTHS patients. Results TCF4 is broadly expressed in cortical and subcortical structures in the developing and adult mouse brain. The TCF4 expression pattern was highly similar between humans, rhesus monkeys, and mice. Moreover, Tcf4 haploinsufficiency in mice replicated structural brain anomalies observed in PTHS patients. Conclusion Our data suggests that TCF4 is involved in the development and function of multiple brain regions and indicates that its regulation is evolutionary conserved. Moreover, our data validate Tcf4-haploinsufficient mice as a model to study the neurodevelopmental basis of PTHS.

Background: Epilepsy surgery for focal cortical dysplasia type II (FCD II) offers good chances for seizure freedom, but remains a challenge with respect to lesion detection, defining the epileptogenic zone and the optimal resection strategy. Integrating results from magnetic source imaging from magnetoencephalography (MEG) with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) including MRI postprocessing may be useful for optimizing these goals. Methods: We here present data from 21 adult FCD II patients, investigated during a 10 year period and evaluated including magnetic source imaging. 16 patients had epilepsy surgery, i.e. histopathologically verified FCD II, and a long follow up. We present our analysis of epileptogenic zones including MEG in relation to structural data according to MRI data and relate these results to surgical outcomes. Results: FCD II in our cohort was characterized by high MEG yield and localization accuracy and MEG showed impact on surgical success-rates. MEG source localizations were detected in 95.2% of patients and were as close as 12.3 ± 8,1 mm to the MRI-lesion. After a mean follow up of >3 years, we saw >80% Engel I outcomes, with more favourable outcomes when the MEG source was completely resected (Fishers exact test 0,033). Conclusion: We argue for a high value of conducting a combined MEG-MRI approach in the presurgical workup and the resection strategy in patients with FCD II related epilepsy. Drug-resistant epilepsy can be most limiting for patients, and surgery represents a viable therapy option. With the growing research on the human connectome and the evidence of epilepsy being a network disorder, connectivity analysis may be able to contribute to our understanding of epilepsy and may be potentially developed into clinical applications. In this magnetoencephalographic study, we determined the whole-brain node degree of connectivity levels in patients and controls. Resting-state activity was measured at five frequency bands in 15 healthy controls and 15 patients with focal epilepsy of different etiologies. The whole-brain all-to-all imaginary part of coherence in source space was then calculated. Node degree was determined and parcellated and was used for further statistical evaluation. In comparison to controls, we found a significantly higher overall node degree in patients with lesional and non-lesional epilepsy. Furthermore, we examined the conditions of high/reduced vigilance and open/closed eyes in controls, to analyze whether patient node degree levels can be achieved. We evaluated intraclass-correlation statistics (ICC) to evaluate the reproducibility. Connectivity and specifically node degree analysis could present new tools for one of the most common neurological diseases, with potential applications in epilepsy diagnostics.

IntroductionPreoperative functional mapping in the vicinity of brain lesion is of high importance for avoiding complications in surgical management. However, space-occupying lesions may lead to functional reorganization or decreased BOLD activity.MethodsTherefore in 13 patients with cerebral gliomas or brain arterio-venous malformations/ hemangioma fMRI- and MEG-based cortical localizations of motor and somatosensory cortical activation pattern were compared in order to investigate their congruency.ResultsLocalization of cortical sensorimotor areas with fMRI and MEG showed good congruency with a mean spatial distance of around 10 mm, with differences depending on the localization method. The smallest mean differences for the centroids were found for MEF with MNE 8 mm and SEF with sLORETA 8 mm. Primary motor area (M1) reorganization was found in 5 of 12 patients in fMRI and confirmed with MEG data. In these 5 patients with M1-reorganization the distance between the border of the fMRI-based cortical M1-localization and the tumor border on T1w MR images varied between 0-4 mm, which was significant (P = 0.025) different to the distance in glioma patients without M1-reorganization (5-26 mm).ConclusionOur multimodal preoperative mapping approach combining fMRI and MEG reveals a high degree of spatial congruence and provided high evidence for the presence of motor cortex reorganization.

BACKGROUND:There is evidence that glaucoma is a neurodegenerative disease involving the whole visual pathway. We prospectively examined potential benefits of volumetry of the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) using a new 7T scanner. METHODS:20 patients with normal tension glaucoma and 16 control individuals were examined. LGN volume and fractional anisotropy (FA) of the optic tract (OT) and the optic radiation (OR) and their correlation with RNFL (retinal nerve fiber layer) thickness were analyzed. RESULTS:LGN volume was significantly reduced in NTG (60.9 vs 88.3; p < 0.05). FA of the OT (right: 0.35 vs 0.66, left: 0.36 vs 0.67; p < 0.05) and of the OR (right: 0.41 vs 0.70, left: 0.41 vs 0.69; p < 0.05) was also significantly reduced. Nasal RNFL thickness correlated with the volume of the contralateral LGN (r = 0.471, p = 0.05). Temporal RNFL thickness correlated with the volume of the ipsilateral LGN (r = 0.603, p = 0.015). CONCLUSION:NTG leads to significant atrophy of the LGN compared to controls. FA of the optic tract and the optic radiation is reduced in NTG as sign of axonal degeneration. RNFL thickness but not FA correlates with LGN volume.

A constant preoccupation with food and restrictive eating are main symptoms of anorexia nervosa (AN). Imaging studies revealed aberrant neural activation patterns in brain regions processing hedonic and reward reactions as well as-potentially aversive-emotions. An imbalance between so called "bottom-up" and "top-down" control areas is discussed. The present study is focusing on neural processing of disease-specific food stimuli and emotional stimuli and its developmental course in adolescent and adult AN patients and could offer new insight into differential mechanisms underlying shorter or more chronic disease.33 adolescents aged 12-18 years (15 AN patients, 18 control participants) and 32 adult women (16 AN patients, 16 control participants) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI, 3T high-field scanner) while watching pictures of high and low-calorie food and affective stimuli. Afterwards, they rated subjective valence of each picture. FMRI data analysis was performed using a region of interest based approach.Pictures of high-calorie food items were rated more negatively by AN patients. Differences in activation between patients and controls were found in "bottom up" and "top down" control areas for food stimuli and in several emotion processing regions for affective stimuli which were more pronounced in adolescents than in adults.A differential pattern was seen for food stimuli compared to generally emotion eliciting stimuli. Adolescents with AN show reduced processing of affective stimuli and enhanced activation of regions involved in "bottom up" reward processing and "top down" control as well as the insula with regard to food stimuli with a focus on brain regions which underlie changes during adolescent development. In adults less clear and less specific activation differences were present, pointing towards a high impact that regions undergoing maturation might have on AN symptoms.
