The effective population size (Ne) is a key parameter in conservation and evolutionary biology, reflecting the strength of genetic drift and inbreeding. Although demographic estimations of Ne are logistically and time‐consuming, genetic methods have become more widely used due to increasing data availability. Nonetheless, accurately estimating Ne remains challenging, with few studies comparing Ne estimates across molecular markers types and estimators such as single‐sample methods based on linkage disequilibrium or sibship analyses versus methods based on temporal variance in allele frequencies. This study aims at bridging this gap by analysing single‐sample and temporally spaced populations in the southern damselfly (Coenagrion mercuriale), a bioindicator Odonata species of conservation concern found in southwestern Europe's freshwater stream networks. A total of 77 local populations were sampled from a semi‐urbanised area located in eastern France near Strasbourg city, yielding 2842 individuals that were genotyped with microsatellites and 958 of which were also genotyped for 2092 SNPs. Spatial genetic structure was stable over time, suggesting porosity between alternate‐year cohorts. When accounting for spatial genetic structure, single‐sample and temporal estimations of Ne were consistent for each set of molecular markers. Biologically meaningful results were obtained when the effect of migration was minimising by considering metapopulation Ne estimates based on the level of genetic differentiation and population boundaries. In terms of applied conservation and management, most depicted metapopulations displayed large Ne, indicating no immediate need for conservation measures to mitigate anthropogenic pressures, provided that a continuous suitable freshwater network is maintained. However, urbanisation negatively impacted Ne levels in populations close to Strasbourg city. Because Ne is used to inform conservation decisions, caution is crucial in interpreting Ne estimates, especially in continuously distributed populations undergoing migration. Altogether, our study highlights the challenge of obtaining robust Ne estimates and the necessity of careful interpretation to set relevant conservation guidelines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Glioblastomas are mostly resected under general anesthesia under the supervision of a general anesthesiologist. Currently, it is largely unkown if clinical outcomes of GBM patients can be improved by appointing a neuro-anesthesiologist for their cases. We aimed to evaluate whether the assignment of dedicated neuro-anesthesiologists improves the outcomes of these patients. We also investigated the value of dedicated neuro-oncological surgical teams as an independent variable in both groups. Methods A cohort consisting of 401 GBM patients who had undergone resection was retrospectively investigated. Primary outcomes were postoperative neurological complications, fluid balance, length-of-stay and overall survival. Secondary outcomes were blood loss, anesthesia modality, extent of resection, total admission costs, and duration of surgery. Results 320 versus 81 patients were operated under the anesthesiological supervision of a general anesthesiologist and a dedicated neuro-anesthesiologist, respectively. Dedicated neuro-anesthesiologists yielded significant superior outcomes in 1) postoperative neurological complications (early: p = 0.002, OR = 2.54; late: p = 0.003, OR = 2.24); 2) fluid balance (pConclusion GBM resections with anesthesiological supervision of a dedicated neuro-anesthesiologists are associated with improved patient outcomes. Prospective evidence is needed to further investigate the usefulness of the dedicated neuro-anesthesiologist in different settings.

As there is a lack of regulations on pesticide levels in crude oils, this study aimed to evaluate transfer factors for extrapolating concentration limits established for maize kernels to the crude oils extracted from their germs. Maize kernels were spiked with 4 organophosphates insecticides (chlorpyriphos, chlorpyriphos-methyl, fenitrothion, pirimiphos-methyl), 2 pyrethroids (cypermethrin and deltamethrin) and a pyrethroid synergist, piperonyl butoxide (PB) targeting a dose of 1 mg/kg grain. The kernels were transformed in a pilot starch-mill to separate the germs (wet-milling) then these germs underwent an oil extraction process in a mini-pilot comprising a thermal conditioning stage, a mechanical extraction followed by a solvent extraction and a desolventization-toasting stage for the meal. Analyses were carried out by gas chromatography coupled to MS/MS detector. The pesticides content was measured on kernels, spiked kernels, germ, crude oil and meal. Surprisingly, a significant difference in behavior was observed between organophosphates and pyrethroids in the transition from grain to germ. For the former, the applied pesticides were recovered at levels between 48% and 81% in the germ, compared to only 9–11% for the latter and 31% for PB. It has been shown by means of acetonitrile washing on spiked seeds that the pyrethroids remained bound to the hydrophobic cuticle of the grains. On the other hand, from the germ to the oil, the initial hypothesis of an almost total transfer of the pesticides in the fat fraction of the material was confirmed. The germ to meal concentration ratios were on average 0.019, 0.065 and 0.109 for organophosphates, PB and pyrethroids respectively. In the same order, the concentration ratios between germ and crude oil were 1.87, 1.98 and 2.17. Grain to final oil transfer factors ranged from 7.4 to 12.7 for organophosphates, 4.8 for PB and 1.4 and 1.7 for cypermethrin and deltamethrin respectively.

Introduction The main surgical dilemma during glioma resections is the surgeon’s inability to accurately identify eloquent areas when the patient is under general anaesthesia without mapping techniques. Intraoperative stimulation mapping (ISM) techniques can be used to maximise extent of resection in eloquent areas yet simultaneously minimise the risk of postoperative neurological deficits. ISM has been widely implemented for low-grade glioma resections backed with ample scientific evidence, but this is not yet the case for high-grade glioma (HGG) resections. Therefore, ISM could thus be of important value in HGG surgery to improve both surgical and clinical outcomes.Methods and analysis This study is an international, multicenter, prospective three-arm cohort study of observational nature. Consecutive HGG patients will be operated with awake mapping, asleep mapping or no mapping with a 1:1:1 ratio. Primary endpoints are: (1) proportion of patients with National Institute of Health Stroke Scale deterioration at 6 weeks, 3 months and 6 months after surgery and (2) residual tumour volume of the contrast-enhancing and non-contrast-enhancing part as assessed by a neuroradiologist on postoperative contrast MRI scans. Secondary endpoints are: (1) overall survival and (2) progression-free survival at 12 months after surgery; (3) oncofunctional outcome and (4) frequency and severity of serious adverse events in each arm. Total duration of the study is 5 years. Patient inclusion is 4 years, follow-up is 1 year.Ethics and dissemination The study has been approved by the Medical Ethics Committee (METC Zuid-West Holland/Erasmus Medical Center; MEC-2020–0812). INTRODUCTION: L'halitose, état morbide caractérisé par une mauvaise haleine, présente à la fois un aspect pathologique et social. Dans notre contexte, l'halitose pose de nombreux problèmes de prise en charge aux plans diagnostique et thérapeutique en pratique clinique. Le but de notre travail était d'étudier les aspects diagnostiques et thérapeutiques de l'halitose. METHODES: il s'agit d'une étude transversale sur une année. Ont été inclus, les patients âgés de plus de 15 ans qui ont consulté pour halitose au centre hospitalier universitaire Yalgado Ouédraogo. Ont été exclus les patients avec mauvaise haleine mais consultant pour un autre motif. L'haleine a été évaluée par un praticien selon le test organoleptique de Rosenberg. RESULTATS: au total 35 patients ont été inclus pour un sex-ratio de 1,2. L'âge moyen était de 31,9 ans. Dans 57,1% des cas, la plainte venait du patient lui-même. La durée moyenne de l'halitose était de 4,3 ans. Dix-neuf patients avaient un score de Mel Rosenberg 2. La carie dentaire (07 cas), la sinusite (07 cas), l'infection à Helicobacter pylori (09 cas) et l'ulcère gastro-intestinal (10 cas) étaient associés à l'halitose. Le traitement a été étiologique dans 82.9% des cas avec une amélioration satisfaisante à deux semaines de l'ordre de 71,8%. CONCLUSION: l'halitose reste une pathologie peu étudiée et pose un problème de diagnostic positif, mais aussi étiologique dans notre contexte. Le rôle de l'odontologiste est crucial dans la recherche de la cause de l'halitose. Cependant, une prise en soins pluridisciplinaire de l'halitose permettra d'y apporter une réponse plus efficace.
