13. Influence of Auxiliary Features in Factorization-based Collaborative Filtering

Abstract

The tremendous growth of the Internet brings with it a massive amount of data that users are exposed to on a daily basis. Consequently, information filtering techniques like recommender systems have become increasingly important to sift through the data and find what is relevant to a particular user. A recent approach for recommender systems, called Factorization Machines (FM), has been attracting lots of attention for its flexibility and accuracy. In this work we explore the importance of optimizing FMs, the influence of different auxiliary features on the performance of FMs and how to weight these features. The results show that the optimization of hyper-parameters, factorization dimensionality and feature weights is a very crucial part of using FMs for recommendations. Using static un-normalized feature weights is found to outperform using previously proposed normalized weights in terms of rating prediction accuracy. Several new approaches to auxiliary features are proposed. Expanding feature vectors with info based on the ratio of users that found a review of the item helpful or not is found to improve performance slightly. Additionally, constructing feature vectors using the similarity of users (based on either common movies commented on, common friends or common ratings) was also beneficial to the performance. However, the overall conclusion is that there is no clear answer to which auxiliary features are useful, as it depends heavily on the dataset and in many cases auxiliary features seem to introduce noise into the model. A noticeable trend in the results indicates that item attributes are more useful for rating predictions than user attributes, while the opposite applies for top-N ranking predictions and diversity, which benefits more from user attributes., Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science, Multimedia Computing, Embedded Systems

14. Incidence and course of depression in multiple sclerosis in the multinational BEYOND trial

Abstract

Early experience in MS generated concerns that interferon beta treatment might provoke onset or worsening of depression. The objective of the study was to compare depression incidence in relapsing-remitting MS patients receiving interferon beta-1b (IFNB-1b) or glatiramer acetate (GA) in the BEYOND trial. 891/897 (99 %) of English, French, Spanish and Italian speakers among 2244 patients randomized (2:2:1) to receive either IFNB-1b 500 µg, 250 µg, or GA 20 mg QD for 2-3.5 years submitted Beck Depression Inventory Second Edition (BDI-II) scores at screening and serially thereafter, in which scores ≥14 indicated depression. Baseline BDI-II scores ≥14 were reported in 232/891 patients (26.3 %), with no meaningful difference among the three treatment arms noted at this or at any other time during the study including trial end. Percentages of patients depressed by BDI-II scores deviated little in any arm at any time (IFNB-1b 500 µg: 24.7 %, IFNB-1b 250 µg: 24.4 %, GA: 32.4 %). Antidepressant usage was likewise similar among the three treatment arms (IFNB-1b 500 µg: 33.7 %, IFNB-1b 250 µg: 31.8 %, GA: 28.8 %) as was depression severity and the frequency with which non-blinded treating physicians recorded depression as an adverse event (IFNB-1b 500 µg: 17.2 %, IFNB-1b 250 µg: 17.0 %, GA: 14.4 %). Treating physicians attributed depression to IFNB-1b 250 µg therapy in 53.6 % and to GA in 21.9 % of instances. This large, prospective, randomized-controlled MS dataset showed no increased risk of depression above baseline values with standard or double-dose IFNB-1b or GA QD treatment.

15. Exploring the possibility of low-frequency seismic communication in elephants and other large mammals

Abstract

As an elephant vocalizes with low frequency rumbles, a signal replica is propagated in the ground. Using seismic modeling, we estimated that the elephant rumbles that we recorded could potentially travel up to 16.7 km in the ground and foot stomps from a mock charge could possibly travel up to 32 kilometers. To determine if elephants can detect these seismic signals, we conducted seismic playback experiments with African and Asian elephants. Previously recorded seismic components of particular elephant vocalizations were played back through two specially adapted 50 W seismic transmitters at 10 m distances from the elephant. A TEAC digital recorder provided the signal source for the transmitters. Playback signals and elephant responses were recorded close to the elephant on a TASCAM 2-channel digital recorder through a 20 Hz Mandrel geophone and Neumann low frequency microphone. Real time monitoring on a laptop using SpectraPLUS software ensured signal integrity, without coupling into the air. To assess detection of seismic signals, elephant behavior was monitored through video and visual observations. We are also investigating organs of interest on the elephant's head and feet as candidates for special seismic and auditory sensitivity. If elephants detect seismic components of their vocalizations, communication may be possible at greater distances than previously thought. The results of this study may have significant implications for elephant long distance communication and a better understanding of elephant audition. Possible seismic communication in other large mammals such as lions and bison is also discussed.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: The aim of the Betaferon Efficacy Yielding Outcomes of a New Dose (BEYOND) trial was to compare the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of 250 microg or 500 microg interferon beta-1b with glatiramer acetate for treating relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis. METHODS: Between November, 2003, and June, 2005, 2447 patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis were screened and 2244 patients were enrolled in this prospective, multicentre, randomised trial. Patients were randomly assigned 2:2:1 by block randomisation with regional stratification to receive one of two doses of interferon beta-1b (250 microg or 500 microg) subcutaneously every other day or 20 mg glatiramer acetate subcutaneously every day. The primary outcome was relapse risk, defined as new or recurrent neurological symptoms separated by at least 30 days from the preceding event and that lasted at least 24 h. Secondary outcomes were progression on the expanded disability status scale (EDSS) and change in T1-hypointense lesion volume. Clinical outcomes were assessed quarterly for 2.0-3.5 years; MRI was done at screening and annually thereafter. Analysis was by per protocol. This study is registered, number NCT00099502. Abstract

Objective To report the relationship between disease activity and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in relapsing multiple sclerosis, and the impact of natalizumab. Methods HRQoL data were available from 2,113 multiple sclerosis patients in natalizumab clinical studies. In the Natalizumab Safety and Efficacy in Relapsing Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (AFFIRM) study, patients received natalizumab 300mg (n = 627) or placebo (n = 315); in the Safety and Efficacy of Natalizumab in Combination with Interferon Beta-1a in Patients with Relapsing Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (SENTINEL) study, patients received interferon beta-1a (IFN-β-1a) plus natalizumab 300mg (n = 589), or IFN-β-1a plus placebo (n = 582). The Short Form-36 (SF-36) and a subject global assessment visual analog scale were administered at baseline and weeks 24, 52, and 104. Prespecified analyses included changes from baseline to week 104 in SF-36 and visual analog scale scores. Odds ratios for clinically meaningful improvement or worsening on the SF-36 Physical Component Summary (PCS) and Mental Component Summary were calculated. Results Mean baseline SF-36 scores were significantly less than the general US population and correlated with Expanded Disability Status Scale scores, sustained disability progression, relapse number, and increased volume of brain magnetic resonance imaging lesions. Natalizumab significantly improved SF-36 PCS and Mental Component Summary scores at week 104 in AFFIRM. PCS changes were significantly improved by week 24 and at all subsequent time points. Natalizumab-treated patients in both studies were more likely to experience clinically important improvement and less likely to experience clinically important deterioration on the SF-36 PCS. The visual analog scale also showed significantly improved HRQoL with natalizumab. Interpretation HRQoL was impaired in relapsing multiple sclerosis patients, correlated with severity of disease as measured by neurological ratings or magnetic resonance imaging, and improved significantly with natalizumab. Abstract

Background: In Phase 3 double-blind trials (MS-F203 and MS-F204), dalfampridine extended release tablets 10 mg twice daily (dalfampridine-ER; prolonged-release fampridine in Europe; fampridine modified or sustained release elsewhere) improved walking speed relative to placebo in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Objectives: Evaluation of long-term safety and efficacy of dalfampridine-ER in open-label extensions (MS-F203EXT, MS-F204EXT). Methods: Patients received dalfampridine-ER 10 mg twice daily; and had Timed 25-Foot Walk (T25FW) assessments at 2, 14 and 26 weeks, and then every 6 months. Subjects were categorized as dalfampridine-ER responders or non-responders, based on their treatment response in the double-blind parent trials that assessed T25FW. Results: We had 269 patients enter MS-F203EXT and 154 patients complete it; for a maximum exposure of 5 years. We had 214 patients enter MS-F204EXT and 146 complete it; for a maximum exposure of 3.3 years. No new safety signals emerged and dalfampridine-ER tolerability was consistent with the double-blind phase. Improvements in walking speed were lost after dalfampridine-ER was discontinued in the parent trial, but returned by the 2-week assessment after re-initiation of the drug. Throughout the extensions, mean improvement in walking speed declined, but remained improved, among the double-blind responders as compared with non-responders. Conclusions: The dalfamipridine-ER safety profile was consistent with the parent trials. Although walking speed decreased over time, dalfampridine-ER responders continued to show improved walking speed, which was sustained compared with non-responders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Devic's disease is often considered as a variant of multiple sclerosis (MS). However, evidence suggests that Devic's disease may be distinct from MS. Devic's disease can coexist with connective tissue diseases, particularly Sjögren's disease, but this association is rare with MS. Diagnosis of Sjögren's disease in patients with neurological symptoms is often difficult. During early stages of Sjögren's disease, patients may not fulfill all criteria for Sjögren's disease. A high percentage of patients with Sjögren's disease have inflammatory infiltrates in minor salivary glands, and this may be a reliable indicator of early or subclinical disease. We show high prevalence (80%) of salivary gland inflammation in Devic's disease and longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (LETM). We diagnosed 16 patients with Devic's disease, and 2 of these satisfied criteria for Sjögren's disease as did 2 of 9 patients with LETM. Anti-SSA/B titers were infrequently elevated. Although most did not satisfy criteria for Sjögren's disease. 9 of 12 Devic's disease patients and 7 of 8 LETM patients had severe salivary gland inflammation. Thus: (1) patients with Devic's disease or with LETM who have positive labial biopsies but do not satisfy criteria for Sjögren's disease could have subclinical Sjögren's diseases. Alternatively, (2) as patients with Devic's disease have elevated titers of several autoantibodies, so there may exist a set of antibodies that react with antigens in minor salivary glands and cause inflammation. Minor salivary gland biopsy is more sensitive than anti-SSA/B serology in providing histological evidence for possible Sjögren's disease with CNS lesions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Seismic and acoustic data were recorded simultaneously from Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) during periods of vocalizations and locomotion. Acoustic and seismic signals from rumbles were highly correlated at near and far distances and were in phase near the elephant and were out of phase at an increased distance from the elephant. Data analyses indicated that elephant generated signals associated with rumbles and 'foot stomps' propagated at different velocities in the two media, the acoustic signals traveling at 309 m/s and the seismic signals at 248-264 m/s. Both types of signals had predominant frequencies in the range of 20 Hz. Seismic signal amplitudes considerably above background noise were recorded at 40 m from the generating elephants for both the rumble and the stomp. Seismic propagation models suggest that seismic waveforms from vocalizations are potentially detectable by instruments at distances of up to 16 km, and up to 32 km for locomotion generated signals. Abstract

Poly-L-lysine (PLL) given subcutaneously in a dose of 3 mg/day suppresses experimental allergic encephalomyelitis in guinea-pigs. The suppressive effect of PLL can still be demonstrated when administration is begun 8 days post-immunization. The effect is disease- and species-specific since PLL (3 mg/day) does not suppress experimental allergic orchitis in guinea-pigs, nor does it suppress EAE in rats (15 mg day). PLL (0.2 mg/day) does not decrease the severity of graft-versus-host disease (GVH) in mice as judged by the spleen/body weight assay. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
