1. Optimización energética en la fabricación de baldosas cerámicas mediante el uso de aceite térmico

Abstract

The ceramic tile manufacturing process consumes a great amount of energy, mainly thermal energy, which is obtained from natural gas combustion. The increased cost of this fuel and the current economic situation make cost a critical issue that can hurt company competitiveness. The ceramic tile firing process in roller kilns does not exactly stand out for its energy efficiency, because about 50% of the energy input is lost through the kiln combustion flue gas and cooling gas stacks. With a view to improving the reuse of the energy consumed in the firing operation, two heat exchangers were installed in the stacks of a kiln. In these heat exchangers, the kiln gases transfer their sensible heat to a thermal oil that then passes this on, through two other exchangers, to the drying gases in the recirculation ducts of a vertical dryer. This study presents an experimental industrial plant in a fine-tuning test phase, in which the preliminary results indicate an energy efficiency improvement in a range of 60–90%, depending on the operating conditions and processed materials.El proceso de fabricación de baldosas cerámicas consume gran cantidad de energía, mayoritariamente energía térmica, que se obtiene de la combustión de gas natural. El incremento del coste de este combustible, así como la situación económica actual, hace que este coste sea crítico para las empresas y pueda mermar su competitividad. El proceso de cocción de las baldosas cerámicas en hornos de rodillos no destaca precisamente por el aprovechamiento de la energía utilizada, pues aproximadamente el 50 % se pierde a través de las chimeneas de humos y de enfriamiento del horno. Con el objetivo de mejorar el aprovechamiento de la energía consumida durante la operación de cocción se han instalado, en las chimeneas de un horno, dos intercambiadores de calor, en los cuales los gases procedentes del horno ceden su calor sensible a un aceite térmico, que posteriormente lo transfiere a través de otros dos intercambiadores a los gases de secado en las conducciones de recirculación de un secadero vertical. En este trabajo se presenta una planta industrial experimental en la que los resultados obtenidos de ahorro energético se sitúan en un valor medio de 650 kW, dependiendo de las condiciones de funcionamiento y materiales procesados.

Abstract

We report on the efficient design of quantum optimal control protocols to manipulate the motional states of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a one-dimensional optical lattice. Our protocols operate on the momentum comb associated with the lattice. In contrast to previous works also dealing with control in discrete and large Hilbert spaces, our control schemes allow us to reach a wide variety of targets by varying a single parameter, the lattice position. With this technique, we experimentally demonstrate a precise, robust and versatile control: we optimize the transfer of the BEC to a single or multiple quantized momentum states with full control on the relative phase between the different momentum components. This also allows us to prepare the BEC in a given eigenstate of the lattice band structure, or superposition thereof.

Abstract

We investigate the production of s-wave scattering halos from collisions between the momentum components of a Bose-Einstein condensate released from an optical lattice. The lattice periodicity translates in a momentum comb responsible for the quantization of the halos' radii. We report on the engineering of those halos through the precise control of the atom dynamics in the lattice: we are able to specifically enhance collision processes with given center-of-mass and relative momenta. In particular, we observe quantized collision halos between opposite momenta components of increasing magnitude, up to 6 times the characteristic momentum scale of the lattice., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

The field of quantum simulation, which aims at using a tunable quantum system to simulate another, has been developing fast in the past years as an alternative to the all-purpose quantum computer. In particular, the use of temporal driving has attracted a huge interest recently as it was shown that certain fast drivings can create new topological effects, while a strong driving leads to e.g. Anderson localization physics. In this work, we focus on the intermediate regime to observe a quantum chaos transport mechanism called chaos-assisted tunneling which provides new possibilities of control for quantum simulation. Indeed, this regime generates a rich classical phase space where stable trajectories form islands surrounded by a large sea of unstable chaotic orbits. This mimics an effective superlattice for the quantum states localized in the regular islands, with new controllable tunneling properties. Besides the standard textbook tunneling through a potential barrier, chaos-assisted tunneling corresponds to a much richer tunneling process where the coupling between quantum states located in neighboring regular islands is mediated by other states spread over the chaotic sea. This process induces sharp resonances where the tunneling rate varies by orders of magnitude over a short range of parameters. We experimentally demonstrate and characterize these resonances for the first time in a quantum system. This opens the way to new kinds of quantum simulations with long-range transport and new types of control of quantum systems through complexity.

Abstract

We investigate a Bose Einstein condensate held in a 1D optical lattice whose phase undergoes a fast oscillation using a statistical analysis. The averaged potential experienced by the atoms boils down to a periodic potential having the same spatial period but with a renormalized depth. However, the atomic dynamics also contains a \emph{micromotion} whose main features are revealed by a Kolmorogov-Smirnov analysis of the experimental momentum distributions. Abstract

We report on a generic cooling technique for atoms trapped in optical lattices. It consists in modulating the lattice depth with a proper frequency sweeping. This filtering technique removes the most energetic atoms, and provides with the onset of thermalization a cooling mechanism reminiscent of evaporative cooling. However, the selection is here performed in quasi-momentum space rather than in position space. Interband selection rules are used to protect the population with a zero quasi-momentum, namely the Bose Einstein condensate. Direct condensation of thermal atoms in an optical lattice is also achieved with this technique. It offers an interesting complementary cooling mechanism for quantum simulations performed with quantum gases trapped in optical lattices., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

We investigate experimentally a Bose Einstein condensate placed in a 1D optical lattice whose phase or amplitude is modulated in a frequency range resonant with the first bands of the band structure. We study the combined effect of the strength of interactions and external confinement on the 1 and 2-phonon transitions. We identify lines immune or sensitive to atom-atom interactions. Experimental results are in good agreement with numerical simulations. Using the band mapping technique, we get a direct access to the populations that have undergone $n$-phonon transitions for each modulation frequency.

Abstract

We investigate experimentally a Bose Einstein condensate placed in a 1D optical lattice whose phase is modulated at a frequency large compared to all characteristic frequencies. As a result, the depth of the periodic potential is renormalized by a Bessel function which only depends on the amplitude of modulation, a prediction that we have checked quantitatively using a careful calibration scheme. This renormalization provides an interesting tool to engineer in time optical lattices. For instance, we have used it to perform simultaneously a sudden $\pi$-phase shift (without phase residual errors) combined with a change of lattice depth, and to study the subsequent out-of-equilibrium dynamics., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

We report on a new method to calibrate the depth of an optical lattice. It consists in triggering the intrasite dipole mode of the cloud by a sudden phase shift. The corresponding oscillatory motion is directly related to the intraband frequencies on a large range of lattice depths. Remarkably, for a moderate displacement, a single frequency dominates this oscillation for the zeroth and first order interference pattern observed after a sufficiently long time-of-flight. The method is robust against atom-atom interactions and the exact value of the extra external confinement of the initial trapping potential., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

We report on the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) placed in an optical lattice whose phase is suddenly modulated. The frequency and the amplitude of modulation are chosen to ensure a negative renormalized tunneling rate. Under these conditions, staggered states are nucleated by a spontaneous four wave mixing mechanism. The nucleation time is experimentally studied as a function of the renormalized tunnel rate, the atomic density and the modulation frequency. Our results are quantitatively well accounted for by a Truncated Wigner approach and reveal the nucleation of gap solitons after the quench. We discuss the role of quantum versus thermal fluctuations in the nucleation process and experimentally address the limit of the effective Hamiltonian approach.

We present CaII K and TiII optical spectra of early-type stars taken mainly from the UVES Paranal Observatory Project, plus HI 21-cm spectra from the Vila-Elisa and Leiden-Dwingeloo surveys, which are employed to obtain distances to intermediate and high velocity clouds. HI emission at a velocity of -117 km/s towards the sightline HD 30677 with NHI=1.7x10^19 cm-2 has no corresponding CaII K absorption, which has a signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio of 610. The star has a spectroscopically determined distance of 2.7-kpc, and hence sets this as a firm lower distance limit towards Anti-Centre cloud ACII. Towards another sightline (HD 46185), HI at +122 km/s and NHI=1.2x10^19 cm-2 is seen. The CaII K spectrum has a S/N = 780, although no absorption is observed at the cloud velocity. This similarly places a firm lower distance limit of 2.9-kpc towards this parcel of gas that may be an intermediate velocity cloud. The lack of intermediate velocity (IV) CaII K absorption towards HD 196426 at a S/N = 500 reinforces a lower distance limit of 700-pc towards this part of Complex gp, where NHI is 1.1x10^19 cm-2 and velocity is +78 km/s. Additionally, no IV CaII K is seen in absorption in the spectrum of HD 19445, which is strong in HI with NHI=8x10^19 cm-2 at -42 km/s, placing a firm although uninteresting lower distance limit of 39-pc to this part of IV South. Finally, no HV CaII K absorption is seen towards HD 115363 at a S/N = 410, placing a lower distance of 3.2-kpc towards the HVC gas at velocity of +224 km/s and NHI=5.2x10^19 cm-2. This gas is in the same region of the sky as complex WE (Wakker 2001), but at higher velocities. The non-detection of CaII K absorption sets a lower distance of 3.2-kpc towards the HVC, which is unsurprising if this feature is indeed related to the Magellanic System., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

Abstract

Despite impressive and durable responses, nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients treated with anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) inhibitors (ALK-Is) ultimately progress due to development of resistance. Here, we have evaluated the clinical utility of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) profiling by next-generation sequencing (NGS) upon disease progression. We collected 26 plasma and two cerebrospinal fluid samples from 24 advanced ALK-positive NSCLC patients at disease progression to an ALK-I. These samples were analyzed by NGS and digital PCR. A tool to retrieve variants at the ALK locus was developed (VALK tool). We identified at least one resistance mutation in the ALK locus in ten (38.5%) plasma samples; the G1269A and G1202R mutations were the most prevalent among patients progressing to first- and second-generation ALK-Is, respectively. Overall, 61 somatic mutations were detected in 14 genes: TP53, ALK, PIK3CA, SMAD4, MAP2K1 (MEK1), FGFR2, FGFR3, BRAF, EGFR, IDH2, MYC, MET, CCND3, and CCND1. Specifically, a deletion in exon 19 in EGFR, a non-V600 BRAF mutation (G466V), and the F129L mutation in MAP2K1 were identified in four patients who showed no objective survival benefit from ALK-Is. Potential ALK-I-resistance mutations were also found in PIK3CA and IDH2. Finally, a c-MYC gain, along with a loss of CCND1 and FGFR3, was detected in a patient progressing on a first-line treatment with crizotinib. We conclude that NGS analysis of liquid biopsies upon disease progression identified different putative ALK-I-resistance mutations in most cases and could be a valuable approach for therapy decision making.
