Abstract

The precise measurement of parity-violating asymmetries in parity-violating electron scattering experiments is a powerful tool for probing new physics beyond the Standard Model. Achieving the expected precision requires both experimental and post-processing signal corrections. This includes using auxiliary detectors to distinguish the main signal from background signals and implementing post-measurement corrections, such as the Bayesian statistics method, to address uncontrolled factors during the experiments. Asymmetry values in the scattering of electrons off proton targets in QWeak and P2 and off electron targets in MOLLER are influenced by detector array configurations, beam polarization angles, and beam spin variations. The Bayesian framework refines full probabilistic models to account for all necessary factors, thereby extracting asymmetry values and the underlying physics under specified conditions. For the QWeak experiment, a reanalysis of the inelastic asymmetry measurement using the Bayesian method has yielded a closer fit to measured asymmetries, with uncertainties reduced by 40\% compared to the Monte Carlo minimization method. Abstract

The article discusses the efficacy and safety of monoclonal anti‐interleukin (IL)‐5 antibodies for treating chronic asthma in both adults and children. Anti‐IL‐5 treatments have been found to reduce the rate of asthma exacerbations in adults with severe asthma, particularly those with elevated blood eosinophils. While improvements in health‐related quality of life and lung function were limited, no safety concerns were identified for mepolizumab and reslizumab, but there was a small incidence of adverse events leading to discontinuation of benralizumab. The study included participants with moderate to severe eosinophilic asthma and found that biologic agents like mepolizumab and benralizumab can be effective in reducing asthma exacerbations and improving quality of life, especially in patients with uncontrolled severe asthma. Abstract

Background: Structural lung disease and neutrophil-dominated airway inflammation is present from 3 months of age in children diagnosed with cystic fibrosis after newborn screening. We hypothesised that azithromycin, given three times weekly to infants with cystic fibrosis from diagnosis until age 36 months, would reduce the extent of structural lung disease as captured on chest CT scans. Methods: A phase three, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was done at eight paediatric cystic fibrosis centres in Australia and New Zealand. Infants (aged 3–6 months) diagnosed with cystic fibrosis following newborn screening were eligible. Exclusion criteria included prolonged mechanical ventilation in the first 3 months of life, clinically significant medical disease or comorbidities other than cystic fibrosis, or macrolide hypersensitivity. Participants were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive either azithromycin (10 mg/kg bodyweight orally three times per week) or matched placebo until age 36 months. Randomisation was done with a permuted block strategy and an interactive web-based response system, stratified by study site. Unblinding was done once all participants completed the trial. The two primary outcomes were the proportion of children with radiologically defined bronchiectasis, and the percentage of total lung volume affected by disease. Secondary outcomes included clinical outcomes and exploratory outcomes were inflammatory markers. Analyses were done with the intention-to-treat principle. This study is registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT01270074). Findings: Between June 15, 2012, and July 10, 2017, 281 patients were screened, of whom 130 were enrolled, randomly assigned, and received first study dose. 68 participants received azithromycin and 62 received placebo. Abstract

International audience; Understanding the structure of the nucleon (proton and neutron) is a critical problem in physics. Especially challenging is to understand the spin structure when the Strong Interaction becomes truly strong. At energy scales below the nucleon mass (~1 GeV), the intense interactions of the quarks and gluons inside the nucleon makes them highly correlated. Their coherent behavior causes the emergence of effective hadronic degrees of freedom (hadrons are composite particles made of quarks and gluons) which are necessary to understand the nucleon properties. Theoretically studying this subject requires approaches employing non-perturbative techniques or using hadronic degrees of freedom, e.g. chiral effective field theory (chiEFT). Here, we present measurements sensitive to the neutron's spin precession under electromagnetic fields. The observables, the generalized spin-polarizabilities delta_LT and gamma_0, which quantify the nucleon spin's precession, were measured at very low energy-momentum transfer squared Q^2 corresponding to probing distances of the size of the nucleon. Our Q^2 values match the domain where chiEFT calculations are expected to be applicable. The calculations have been conducted to high degrees of sophistication, including that of the so-called "gold-plated" observable, delta_LT. Surprisingly however, our data show a strong discrepancy with the chiEFT calculations. This presents a challenge to the current description of the neutron's spin properties.

29. First result from Qweak

Abstract

Initial results are presented from the recently-completed Qweak experiment at Jefferson Lab. The goal is a precise measurement of the proton's weak charge Qwp, to yield a test of the standard model and to search for evidence of new physics. The weak charge is extracted from the parity-violating asymmetry in elastic \vec{e}p See Formula in PDF scattering at low momentum transfer, Q2 = 0.025 GeV2. A 180 μA longitudinally-polarized 1.16 GeV electron beam was scattered from a 35 cm long liquid hydrogen at small angles, 6∘ < θ < 12∘. Scattered electrons were analyzed in a toroidal magnetic field and detected using an array of eight Cerenkov detectors arranged symmetrically about the beam axis. The initial result, from 4% of the complete data set, is QWp = 0.064 ± 0.012, in excellent agreement with the standard model expectation. Full analysis of the data is expected to yield a value for the weak charge to about 5% precision.

Abstract

Abstract Background Chronic lung infection with the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the hallmarks of cystic fibrosis (CF) and is associated with worsening lung function, increased hospitalisation and reduced life expectancy. A virulent clonal strain of P. aeruginosa (Australian epidemic strain I; AES-I) has been found to be widespread in CF patients in eastern Australia. Methods Suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) was employed to identify genetic sequences that are present in the AES-I strain but absent from the sequenced reference strain PAO1. We used PCR to evaluate the distribution of several of the AES-I loci amongst a collection of 188 P. aeruginosa isolates which was comprised of 35 AES-I isolates (as determined by PFGE), 78 non-AES-I CF isolates including other epidemic CF strains as well as 69 P. aeruginosa isolates from other clinical and environmental sources. Results We have identified a unique AES-I genetic locus that is present in all 35 AES-I isolates tested and not present in any of the other 153 P. aeruginosa strains examined. We have used this unique AES-I locus to develop a diagnostic PCR and a real-time PCR assay to detect the presence of P. aeruginosa and AES-I in patient sputum samples. Conclusions We have developed diagnostic PCR assays that are 100% sensitive and 100% specific for the P. aeruginosa strain AES-I. We have also shown that Whatman FTA® Elute cards may be used with PCR-based assays to rapidly detect the presence of P. aeruginosa strains in CF sputum.

Abstract

Initial results are presented from the recently-completed Qweak experiment at Jefferson Lab. The goal is a precise measurement of the proton's weak charge Qwp, to yield a test of the standard model and to search for evidence of new physics. The weak charge is extracted from the parity-violating asymmetry in elastic ep scattering at low momentum transfer, Q² = 0.025GeV². A 180 µA longitudinally-polarized 1.16 GeV electron beam was scattered from a 35 cm long liquid hydrogen at small angles, 6° < θ < 12°. Scattered electrons were analyzed in a toroidal magnetic field and detected using an array of eight Cerenkov detectors arranged symmetrically about the beam axis. The initial result, from 4% of the complete data set, is QWp = 0.064 ± 0.012, in excellent agreement with the standard model expectation. Full analysis of the data is expected to yield a value for the weak charge to about 5% precision. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
