6. Decoupling Firm Growth from Carbon Emissions: A Supply Network Perspective.

Abstract

ABSTRACT A key question facing firms today is how to continue expanding their operations while reducing the ensuing emissions. Decoupling carbon emissions requires a holistic approach that simultaneously accounts for the structural and internal factors shaping firm growth. In this research, we focus on the roles that firms adopt within supply networks and the relationship between role orientations and emissions decoupling. Using an ego-temporal exponential random graph model, we empirically infer the distinct roles of firms from the aerospace and defense supply network. The inferred roles indicate great heterogeneity in the firm behaviors and role-generative processes shaping the supply network. In the following analysis, we discover the decoupling performance differences between firms with distinct role orientations. Firstly, our exploration indicates that firms in central network positions tend to have poorer decoupling performance, with those in monopolistic positions within disconnected networks faring the worst. Secondly, firms occupying roles within interconnected and balanced networks demonstrate relatively effective decoupling efforts. Thirdly, disconnected networks generally perform worse compared to their more connected counterparts. These findings contribute to the evolving perspective on the role of firms within supply networks, offering practitioners valuable insights into the roles their firms play and the subsequent impact on decoupling performance. 20. Structural Changes and Effects of R&D Investments in the Pulp and Paper Industry

Abstract

This study examines the strategic investment choices made in pulp and paper industry (PPI) within the last two decades. We first describe investments, initiated projects, and closures of pulp and paper mills and ofitability of the 22 largest pulp and paper companies in North America, Western Europe and Japan. We then examine the development and impact of R&D investments by comparing the timing of R&D investments with changes in profitability. The results indicate that the relationship between R&D and profitability is company specific. Our findings indicate further that the logic of R&D investment differs across firms; in some companies, changes in profits cause changes in the R&D investment level, whereas in others the opposite holds. It also seems that the sample companies have not actively sought new market opportunities through innovation activity, but rather by geographical re-location of production. Post-print / Final draft

Abstract

In the past two decades, a growing public interest in environmental and social issues has led to intensified pressures on forest industry companies to gain social license to operate (SLO) by meeting often conflicting stakeholder expectations at both the globaland local levels. The integration of social and environmental concerns into business operations vis-a` -vis corporate responsibility (CR) practices has become an essential step in obtaining SLO. In the global forest industry, the adoption and development of CR practices within a companyis likely to be path-dependent, requiring the incorporation of basic sustainability practices prior to successfully implementing more refined ones. In this exploratory study, we use a leading sustainability rating measure, namely the Kinder, Lydenberg and Domini index, to capture the multi-dimensionality of CR and to empirically study the development paths of corporate social performance (CSP) among large US companies. We then apply trajectory analysis based on mixture modelling, which helps to identify the possible CR leaders and laggards, to identify different groups of USforestcompaniesthat follow similar CR developmental trajectories. The use of trajectoryanalysis also facilitates exploring the shapes of the particular trajectories. According to the results, forest companies in the sample can be classified into four trajectories, all of which show consistent progress in the level of CSP between 1991 and 2009. Abstract

The international recovered paper trade serves two important functions: increasing raw material availability in the paper and board industry and providing economic incentives to recycle. The purpose of this paper is to shed further light on emerging patterns in this trade by empirically analysing the changes in the bilateral trade flows of recycled paper between 1992 and 2008. According to our estimations, two important changes occurred in the 1990s and 2000s. First, the growing importance of developing economies in global recycled paper trade plays a significant role in import demand as a determinant of trade flows.
