We present the X-ray analysis of dwarf nova EY Cyg using the 45 ks \textit{XMM-Newton} observatory archival data obtained in quiescence. We find orbital modulations in X-rays. We simultaneously fitted EPIC pn, MOS1 and MOS2 data using a model for interstellar medium absorption (\textit{tbabs}) and a multi-temperature plasma emission model with a power-law distribution of temperatures (CEVMKL) as expected from low accretion rate quiescent dwarf novae. The \textit{XMM-Newton} EPIC spectra of the source yields a maximum temperature $kT_{\rm max}$ $\sim$ 14.9$^{+3.3}_{-2.2}$ keV with an unabsorbed X-ray flux and luminosity of (1.8--2.0) $\times$ 10$^{-12}$ ergs$^{-1}$ cm$^{-1}$ and (8.7--9.7) $\times$ 10$^{31}$ ergs$^{-1}$, respectively, in the energy range 0.1 to 50 keV. There is 3--4 sigma excess at energies below 0.5 keV, we model the excess using \textit{MEKAL}, POWERLAW and BBODY models and favor the model \textit{MEKAL} which is physical. According to previous studies, the secondary in this system is thought to be a K-type star which may radiate in the soft X-ray region. The fit with an additive \textit{MEKAL} model gives a temperature of $kT$ $\sim$ 0.1 keV with an unabsorbed X-ray flux and luminosity of (2.7--8.8) $\times$ 10$^{-14}$ ergs$^{-1}$ cm$^{-1}$ and (1.3--4.2) $\times$ 10$^{30}$ ergs$^{-1}$, respectively, for the companion star. Based on the results from the timing and spectral analysis, we highly suggest that the secondary of EY Cyg is a K-type star., 7 pages, 3 figures, 3 tables. We report on the analysis of the spin evolution of a slow X-ray pulsar GX 301$-$2 along the orbit using long-term monitoring by Fermi/GBM. Based on the observationally confirmed accretion scenario and an analytical model for the accretion of angular momentum we demonstrate that in this system, the neutron star spins retrogradely, that is, in a direction opposite to the orbital motion. This first-of-a-kind discovery of such a system proves the principal possibility of retrograde rotation in accreting systems with suitable accretion torque, and might have profound consequences for our understanding of the spin evolution of X-ray pulsars, estimates of their initial spin periods, and the ultimate result of their evolution., 5 pages, 2 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We present results of detailed investigation of the poorly studied X-ray pulsar 2S 1845$-$024 based on the data obtained with $NuSTAR$ observatory during the type I outburst in 2017. Neither pulse phase-averaged, nor phase-resolved spectra of the source show evidence for a cyclotron absorption feature. We also used the data obtained from other X-ray observatories ($Swift$, $XMM-Newton$ and $Chandra$) to study the spectral properties as a function of orbital phase. The analysis revealed a high hydrogen column density for the source reaching $\sim$10$^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$ around the periastron. Using high-quality $Chandra$ data we were able to obtain an accurate localization of 2S 1845$-$024 at R.A. = 18$^{h}$48$^{m}$16$^{s}$.8 and Dec. = $-$2$^{\circ}$25'25".1 (J2000) that allowed us to use infrared (IR) data to roughly classify the optical counterpart of the source as an OB supergiant at the distance of $\gtrsim$15 kpc., 8 pages, 8 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

Up until now, this blazar had not been the subject of any detailed MWL observations. It has a rather hard photon index at GeV energies and was considered a candidate extreme high-synchrotron-peaked source. MAGIC observations resulted in the first-time detection of the source in VHE with a statistical significance of 7.6σ. The average integral VHE flux of the source is 6 ± 1 per cent of the Crab nebula flux above 400 GeV. X-ray coverage was provided by Swift-XRT, XMM-Newton, and NuSTAR. The long continuous X-ray observations were separated by ∼9 h, both showing clear hour scale flares. In the XMM-Newton data, both the rise and decay time-scales are longer in the soft X-ray than in the hard X-ray band, indicating the presence of a particle cooling regime. The X-ray variability time-scales were used to constrain the size of the emission region and the strength of the magnetic field. The data allowed us to determine the synchrotron peak frequency and classify the source as a flaring high, but not extreme synchrotron-peaked object. Considering the constraints and variability patterns from the X-ray data, we model the broad-band spectral energy distribution. In February 2019, a flaring state of the extreme blazar candidate TXS 1515-273 was registered by the Fermi-LAT, which triggered observations with the MAGIC telescopes and the X-ray satellites Swift, XMM-Newton and NuStar. The observations led to the discovery of the source at very-high-energy (VHE, 100 GeV < E < $ 100 TeV) gamma-ray energies and the detection of short time scales of variability (1 h) in several X-ray bands. The analysis of the observed variability helped us to constrain the physical parameters of the emission region. Thanks to the high-quality X-ray data, the synchrotron peak location was determined. The source was classified as a high synchrotron peaked source during the flaring activity. We constructed the broadband spectral energy distribution from radio to TeV. We interpreted it assuming leptonic emission and taking into account the constraints from the X-ray variability. We tested two scenarios: a simple one-zone model and a two-component model. Both models were found to describe the data well from X-ray to VHE gamma ray, but the two-zone model allows for a more accurate modelling of the emission at radio and optical energies.

We report on our analysis of the 2019 outburst of the X-ray accreting pulsar 4U 1901+03 observed with Insight-HXMT and NICER. Both spectra and pulse profiles evolve significantly in the decaying phase of the outburst. Dozens of flares are observed throughout the outburst. They are more frequent and brighter at the outburst peak. We find that the flares, which have a duration from tens to hundreds of seconds, are generally brighter than the persistent emission by a factor of $\sim$ 1.5. The pulse profile shape during the flares can be significantly different than that of the persistent emission. In particular, a phase shift is clearly observed in many cases. We interpret these findings as direct evidence of changes of the pulsed beam pattern, due to transitions between the sub- and super-critical accretion regimes on a short time scale. We also observe that at comparable luminosities the flares' pulse profiles are rather similar to those of the persistent emission. This indicates that the accretion on the polar cap of the neutron star is mainly determined by the luminosity, i.e., the mass accretion rate., 11 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We investigate the absorption and emission features in observations of GX 301-2 detected with Insight-HXMT/LE in 2017-2019. At different orbital phases, we found prominent Fe Kalpha, Kbeta and Ni Kalpha lines, as well as Compton shoulders and Fe K-shell absorption edges. These features are due to the X-ray reprocessing caused by the interaction between the radiation from the source and surrounding accretion material. According to the ratio of iron lines Kalpha and Kbeta, we infer the accretion material is in a low ionisation state. We find an orbital-dependent local absorption column density, which has a large value and strong variability around the periastron. We explain its variability as a result of inhomogeneities of the accretion environment and/or instabilities of accretion processes. In addition, the variable local column density is correlated with the equivalent width of the iron Kalpha lines throughout the orbit, which suggests that the accretion material near the neutron star is spherically distributed., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report on a detailed spectral analysis of emission from X-ray pulsar 4U 1901+03 using data obtained by the Insight-HXMT and NuSTAR observatories during the 2019 outburst of the source. Thanks to the extensive coverage of the outburst by Insight-HXMT, we were able to investigate the spectral evolution of the source as a function of flux, and compare these results to the previous reports, focusing on the properties of a putative absorption feature at around 10 keV. In particular, we demonstrate that the broadband X-ray continuum of 4U 1901+03 can be well described with a two-component continuum model without an absorption line at 10 keV, which casts doubt on its interpretation as a cyclotron line. The high quality of the data also allowed us to perform both phase-averaged and phase-resolved spectral analyses as a function of luminosity. Finally, we performed a detailed investigation of another absorption feature in the spectrum of the source around 30 keV recently reported in the NuSTAR data. We show that this feature appears to be significantly detected both in phase-averaged and phase-resolved spectra irrespective of the continuum model., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables, revised version accepted for publication in A&A

MAGIC Collaboration: et al., [Context]: It has become evident that one-zone synchrotron self-Compton models are not always adequate for very high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray-emitting blazars. While two-component models perform better, they are difficult to constrain due to the large number of free parameters., [Aims]: In this work, we make a first attempt at taking into account the observational constraints from very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) data, long-term light curves (radio, optical, and X-rays), and optical polarisation to limit the parameter space for a two-component model and test whether or not it can still reproduce the observed spectral energy distribution (SED) of the blazars., [Methods]: We selected five TeV BL Lac objects based on the availability of VHE gamma-ray and optical polarisation data. We collected constraints for the jet parameters from VLBI observations. We evaluated the contributions of the two components to the optical flux by means of decomposition of long-term radio and optical light curves as well as modelling of the optical polarisation variability of the objects. We selected eight epochs for these five objects based on the variability observed at VHE gamma rays, for which we constructed the SEDs that we then modelled with a two-component model., [Results]: We found parameter sets which can reproduce the broadband SED of the sources in the framework of two-component models considering all available observational constraints from VLBI observations. Moreover, the constraints obtained from the long-term behaviour of the sources in the lower energy bands could be used to determine the region where the emission in each band originates. Finally, we attempt to use optical polarisation data to shed new light on the behaviour of the two components in the optical band. Our observationally constrained two-component model allows explanation of the entire SED from radio to VHE with two co-located emission regions., VFR and EL were supported by Academy of Finland projects 317636 and 320045. We report on \textit{NuSTAR} observations of the well-known wind-accreting X-ray pulsar \source\ during a strong spin-up episode that took place in January-March 2019. A high luminosity of the source in a most recent observation allowed us to detect a positive correlation of the cyclotron line energy with luminosity. Beyond that, only minor differences in spectral and temporal properties of the source during the spin-up, presumably associated with the formation of a transient accretion disk, and the normal wind-fed state could be detected. We finally discuss conditions for the formation of the disk and possible reasons for lack of any appreciable variations in most of the observed source properties induced by the change of the accretion mechanism, and conclude that the bulk of the observed X-ray emission is still likely powered by direct accretion from the wind., 10 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present results of investigation of the poorly studied X-ray pulsar Swift J1816.7--1613 during its transition from the type I outburst to the quiescent state. Our studies are based on the data obtained from X-ray observatories \textit{Swift}, \textit{NuSTAR} and \textit{Chandra} alongside with the latest IR data from UKIDSS/GPS and \textit{Spitzer}/GLIMPSE surveys. The aim of the work is to determine parameters of the system: the strength of the neutron star magnetic field and the distance to the source, which are required for the interpretation of the source behaviour in the framework of physically motivated models. No cyclotron absorption line was detected in the broad-band energy spectrum. However, the timing analysis hints at the typical for the X-ray pulsars magnetic field from a few $\times 10^{11}$ to a few $\times 10^{12}$ G.
