Background: Albuminuria has been classically considered a marker of kidney damage progression in diabetic patients and it is routinely assessed to monitor kidney function. However, the role of a mild GFR reduction on the development of stage ≥3 CKD has been less explored in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) patients. Aim of the present study was to evaluate the prognostic role of kidney disease measures, namely albuminuria and reduced GFR, on the development of stage ≥3 CKD in a large cohort of patients affected by T1DM. Methods: A total of 4284 patients affected by T1DM followed-up at 76 diabetes centers participating to the Italian Association of Clinical Diabetologists (Associazione Medici Diabetologi, AMD) initiative constitutes the study population. Urinary albumin excretion (ACR) and estimated GFR (eGFR) were retrieved and analyzed. The incidence of stage ≥3 CKD (eGFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2) or eGFR reduction > 30% from baseline was evaluated. Results: The mean estimated GFR was 98 ± 17 mL/min/1.73m2 and the proportion of patients with albuminuria was 15.3% (n = 654) at baseline. About 8% (n = 337) of patients developed one of the two renal endpoints during the 4-year follow-up period. Age, albuminuria (micro or macro) and baseline eGFR < 90 ml/min/m2 were independent risk factors for stage ≥3 CKD and renal function worsening. When compared to patients with eGFR > 90 ml/min/1.73m2 and normoalbuminuria, those with albuminuria at baseline had a 1.69 greater risk of reaching stage 3 CKD, while patients with mild eGFR reduction (i.e. eGFR between 90 and 60 mL/min/1.73 m2) show a 3.81 greater risk that rose to 8.24 for those patients with albuminuria and mild eGFR reduction at baseline. Conclusions: Albuminuria and eGFR reduction represent independent risk factors for incident stage ≥3 CKD in T1DM patients. The simultaneous occurrence of reduced eGFR and albuminuria have a synergistic effect on renal function worsening.

Background Albuminuria has been classically considered a marker of kidney damage progression in diabetic patients and it is routinely assessed to monitor kidney function. Methods A total of 4284 patients affected by T1DM followed-up at 76 diabetes centers participating to the Italian Association of Clinical Diabetologists (Associazione Medici Diabetologi, AMD) initiative constitutes the study population. Urinary albumin excretion (ACR) and estimated GFR (eGFR) were retrieved and analyzed. The incidence of stage ≥3 CKD (eGFR 30% from baseline was evaluated. Results The mean estimated GFR was 98 ± 17 mL/min/1.73m2 and the proportion of patients with albuminuria was 15.3% (n = 654) at baseline. About 8% (n = 337) of patients developed one of the two renal endpoints during the 4-year follow-up period. Age, albuminuria (micro or macro) and baseline eGFR 90 ml/min/1.73m2 and normoalbuminuria, those with albuminuria at baseline had a 1.69 greater risk of reaching stage 3 CKD, while patients with mild eGFR reduction (i.e. eGFR between 90 and 60 mL/min/1.73 m2) show a 3.81 greater risk that rose to 8.24 for those patients with albuminuria and mild eGFR reduction at baseline. Conclusions Albuminuria and eGFR reduction represent independent risk factors for incident stage ≥3 CKD in T1DM patients. The simultaneous occurrence of reduced eGFR and albuminuria have a synergistic effect on renal function worsening. bacterial carbon production ,primary production ,northern Adriatic Sea ,mucilage formation ,carbon extra celluar release - Abstract
Spatial and temporal changes in phytoplankton production and bacterial C demand were investigated at four stations in the Northern Adriatic Sea over 3 years. The effect of the Po River plume was observed at the western stations; in particular, the northernmost one (B06) showed the highest values of primary production, both as hourly peaks and daily water column integrated valuesthe southern station (C04) was only sporadically influenced and did not differ significantly from the easternmost ones (C12 and B13), where the lowest TPP values were recorded. In this study the first in situ data are reported on short-term phytoplankton C extra cellular release in the Northern Adriatic Sea. At every station a considerable percentage of primary production (PER greater than 20% as an average, with peaks of up to 70%) was released as dissolved organic carbon. In particular, an association of fairly high PER (greater than 10%) and specific production was observed from spring to summer, when the mucilage phenomenon usually starts. This result might suggest the presence of an uncoupling between photosynthesis and growth, probably related with nutrient availability, which would be responsible for a high production of extra cellular organic carbon. Phytoplankton primary production and bacterial carbon production were closely related and bacterial C production accounted, on average, for a higher percentage of primary production than the values typically reported in the literature on aquatic environments. The flow of organic matter from phytoplankton to bacteria seems to satisfy the bacterial carbon demand during most of the spring and summer, at least in the upper water layers. However, during the summer, there is evidence that BCD sometimes exceeds the amount of C produced by phytoplankton. Neither phytoplankton nor bacterial production showed significant differences over the relevant years, and their absolute values did not change when comparing periods with or without mucilage. However, there were indications of an uncoupling between phytoplankton photosynthesis and growth and of a shift from an autotrophic to a heterotrophic metabolism, especially during the spring and summer period when mucilage might occur.

In the present study, plasma lipid concentrations were determined at different times after admission in sera from G6PD-deficient children during haemolytic crisis induced by fava bean ingestion. Reductions in total, LDL and HDL cholesterol were found in association with the maximum of bone marrow hyperplasia. A return towards normal values occurred with regression of the disease. No changes in other lipid parameters were observed. These data suggest that alterations of lipoprotein pattern, other than in experimental animals, are also present in humans with non-malignant proliferative processes. These changes appear to be a consequence of the disease, probably due to an increased utilization of cholesterol by proliferating cells.

BIOLOGICAL monitoring ,MARINE ecology - Abstract
The composition of sediment organic matter and the related role of microphytobenthic biomass have been investigated during one-year in a semi-enclosed marine system (Marsala lagoon, Mediterranean Sea). Monthly samples from June 1993 to May 1994 were analysed for carbohydrate, protein, lipid, photosynthetic pigment and total organic matter. The three main biochemical classes of organic compounds (i.e. carbohydrates, proteins and lipids) showed higher concentrations than reportedin the literature. However, photosynthetic pigment was quite low, compared to other enclosed marine basins or Mediterranean coastal lagoons. As a result, the contribution of primary organic carbon to the sedimentary biopolymeric fraction of organic matter was low (on average2.2%), indicating that most of the sedimentary organic matter in thestudy area originated from sources other than micro-algae. The sedimentary organic matter, dominated by carbohydrates (on average 51.2%) followed by proteins (39.0%) and lipids (9.8%), as well as the low protein to carbohydrate ratio, indicate the presence of large amounts of non-living and/or aged organic matter. Comparing data on spatial distribution of sedimentary and suspended organic matter, the dynamic balance of resuspension vs. sedimentation along a north-south axis is invoked as one major factor affecting the distribution and composition of the main classes of organic compounds. The macroalgal and vascular plant coverage is suggested to be another major factor affecting both amounts and composition of sedimentary organic matter. The northern area, characterised by partially unvegetated sediments, showed higher amounts of proteins, whilst moving southward and approaching a luxuriant Posidonia oceanica reef, carbohydrates became more important relative to proteins. As only the biopolymeric fraction of sediment organic matter showed significant seasonal changes, the quantity of sediment OM behaves as an emerging property. By contrast, OM quality isstr [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Objective: To expand and improve upon previously described nasal osteotomy models with the goals of decreasing cost and production time while ensuring model fidelity. To assess change in participant confidence in their understanding of and ability to perform nasal osteotomies following completion of the simulation course., Study Design: Prospective study., Setting: Simulation training course for otolaryngology residents at West Virginia University., Methods: A combined methodology of 3D printing, silicone molding, and resin casting was used to design a nasal osteotomy model to address material issues such as print delamination. Multiple models were then used in a simulation lab on performing nasal osteotomies. Model utility and impact on participant confidence was assessed at baseline, postlecture, and postsimulation lab., Results: Using a combined manufacturing methodology, we achieved a production time reduction of 97.71% and a cost reduction of 82.02% for this polyurethane resin nasal osteotomy model relative to a previously described osteotomy model. Participants in the simulation course were noted to have a significant improvement in confidence in their understanding of and ability to perform nasal osteotomies from baseline and postlecture and also from postlecture and postsimulation lab (P < .05 for all)., Conclusion: By incorporating multiple manufacturing modalities (molding and casting) in addition to 3D printing, this study achieved a large reduction in both production time and cost in fabrication of a nasal osteotomy simulator and addressed material limitations imposed by fused deposition modeling printers. This design methodology serves as an example on how these barriers may be addressed in unrelated simulation projects. Model fidelity was improved with addition of a silicone soft tissue midface. Improvement in participant confidence was noted following completion of the simulation lab., (© 2024 American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery Foundation.)

- Abstract
Introduction: The anterior ethmoidal artery (AEA) flap has been demonstrated to be a reliable option for endoscopic repair of symptomatic nasal septal perforations. The purpose of this study is to study the outcome of this technique., Methods: A retrospective case series of all consecutive patients who underwent repair of nasal septal perforation utilizing the AEA flap among 2 institutions from August 2020 to July of 2022 was conducted. Demographics and comorbidities were collected preoperatively and postoperatively. The main outcome of this study was to identify the risk factors for surgical failure., Results: Forty-one patients were included. Mean perforation size was 2.2 cm (range 0.5-4.5 cm). Mean age was 42.5 years (range 14-65 years), 53.6% were female, 39% were active smokers, mean body-mass-index (BMI) was 31.9 (range 19.1-45.5), 20% with history of CRS and 31.7% had diabetes mellitus (DM). Etiologies of the perforation included idiopathic (n = 12), iatrogenic (n = 13), intranasal drug use (n = 7), trauma (n = 6), and secondary to tumor resection (n = 3). Overall success rate for complete closure was 73.2%. Active smoking, history of intranasal drug use, and DM were significantly associated with surgical failure (72.7%vs 26.7%, P = .007; 36.4%vs 10%, P = .047; and 63.6%vs 20%, P = .008 respectively)., Conclusion: The endoscopic AEA flap is a reliable technique for closure of nasal septal perforation. It may not work when the etiology is intranasal drug use. Close attention to diabetes and smoking status is also needed., Competing Interests: Declaration of Conflicting InterestsThe author(s) declared no potential conflicts of interest with respect to the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article.

- Abstract
Objective: To validate the sino-nasal outcome test (SNOT-22) as an outcome measure for nasal obstruction, and to determine if it correlates with the nasal obstruction and septoplasty effectiveness (NOSE) scale., Study Design: Prospective cohort study., Methods: All patients presenting to our otolaryngology clinic for nasal obstruction secondary to nasal septal deviation and/or inferior turbinate hypertrophy between August 2020 and June 2022 were asked to fill both the SNOT-22 and the NOSE questionnaires. Demographics and comorbidities were reviewed. Patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) were excluded. SNOT-22 total and subdomain scores were then compared to NOSE scores., Results: 126 patients completed both surveys. Average age was 42.6 years (range 13.8-78.3 years), and 40.5 % were female. 35 patients had septoplasty and inferior turbinoplasty (IT), 34 had functional septorhinoplasty and IT, 6 patients had IT, 7 had nasal septal perforation repair and 44 patients had medical treatment. Overall, SNOT-22 and NOSE scores correlated well preoperatively and postoperatively (r = 0.54, p < 0.0001; r = 0.68, p < 0.0001 respectively). The rhinologic and sleep SNOT-22 subdomains scores had the strongest correlation to NOSE score (r = 0.56, p < 0.0001; r = 0.64, p < 0.0001 respectively). Both NOSE and SNOT-22 scores showed improvement postoperatively [NOSE: 67.4 vs 25.1 (p < 0.0001) at 3 months, 69.5 vs 34 (p < 0.0001) at 6 months; SNOT-22: 37.1 vs 25.2 (p = 0.002) at 3 months, 38.1 vs 22.6 (p = 0.002) at 6 months]. No significant improvement in NOSE or SNOT scores was seen in the medical treatment group., Conclusion: SNOT-22 instrument can be used to study the outcome of treatment for nasal obstruction secondary to nasal septal deviation and/or inferior turbinate hypertrophy., (Copyright © 2023. - Abstract
The circulating metabolome of human peripheral blood provides valuable information to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying the development of diseases and to discover candidate biomarkers. In particular, erythrocytes have been proposed as potential systemic indicators of the metabolic and redox status of the organism. To accomplish wide-coverage metabolomics analysis, the combination of complementary analytical techniques is necessary to manage the physicochemical complexity of the human metabolome. Herein, we describe an untargeted metabolomics method to capture the plasmatic and erythroid metabolomes based on ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry, combining reversed-phase liquid chromatography and hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography. The method provides comprehensive metabolomics fingerprinting of plasma and erythrocyte samples, thereby enabling the elucidation of the distinctive metabolic disturbances behind childhood obesity and associated comorbidities, such as insulin resistance., (© 2023. - Abstract
The gut microbiota plays a central role in human health by enzymatically degrading dietary fiber and concomitantly excreting short chain fatty acids that are associated with manifold health benefits. The polysaccharide xylan is abundant in dietary fiber but noncarbohydrate decorations hinder efficient cleavage by glycoside hydrolases (GHs) and need to be addressed by carbohydrate esterases (CEs). Enzymes from carbohydrate esterase families 1 and 6 (CE1 and 6) perform key roles in xylan degradation by removing feruloyl and acetate decorations, yet little is known about these enzyme families especially with regard to their diversity in activity. Bacteroidetes bacteria are dominant members of the microbiota and often encode their carbohydrate-active enzymes in multigene polysaccharide utilization loci (PULs). Here we present the characterization of three CEs found in a PUL encoded by the gut Bacteroidete Dysgonomonas mossii. We demonstrate that the CEs are functionally distinct, with one highly efficient CE6 acetyl esterase and two CE1 enzymes with feruloyl esterase activities. One multidomain CE1 enzyme contains two CE1 domains: an N-terminal domain feruloyl esterase, and a C-terminal domain with minimal activity on model substrates. We present the structure of the C-terminal CE1 domain with the carbohydrate-binding module that bridges the two CE1 domains, as well as a complex of the same protein fragment with methyl ferulate. The investment of D. mossii in producing multiple CEs suggests that improved accessibility of xylan for GHs and cleavage of covalent polysaccharide-polysaccharide and lignin-polysaccharide bonds are important enzyme activities in the gut environment., Competing Interests: Conflict of interest The authors declare no conflicts of interest regarding this article., (Copyright © 2021 The Authors. - Abstract
One of the most common conundrums in all cardiovascular medicine pertains to the care of patients with atrial fibrillation after percutaneous coronary intervention, because of both dual antiplatelet therapy and oral anticoagulant therapy would seem to be necessary to reduce risks of stent thrombosis and thromboembolism, respectively, but also with an inevitable trade-off of more bleeding. Patients who require triple therapy are at high risk of both ischaemia and bleeding; therefore, defining a personalised secondary prevention strategy aimed at achieving the best net clinical benefit is essential. The good news is that we have entered an era of increased perceived and tangible safety that applies to both non-vitamin K-antagonist oral anticoagulants and newer drug-eluting stents. Even if the consistency across the major trials and the significantly lower risk of bleeding with dual therapy make it hard to argue that triple therapy should be used routinely, the aggregate evidence suggests that the net clinical benefit of dual therapy should give cardiologists confidence to drop aspirin when they are using a contemporary percutaneous coronary intervention strategy with drug-eluting stents. Waiting for more randomised trials and meta-analyses, for the time being, in patients not in clinical trials, full-dose oral triple therapy with dual antiplatelet agents and full-dose anticoagulation should be avoided as a routine practice, and the choice of the proper, that is, safer, oral anticoagulant, namely a non-vitamin K-antagonist oral anticoagulant, may be regarded by now as an additional bleeding avoiding strategy in patients with atrial fibrillation undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention.

The performance of seven sub-2-μm particle packed columns (2-picolylamine, 2-PIC; charged surface hybrid fluoro-phenyl, CSH-FP; high strength silica C18 SB, HSS-C
18 ; diethylamine, DEA; 1-aminoanthracene, 1-AA; high density diol and ethylene bridged hybrid; BEH) was examined for lipid separation in ultra-high performance supercritical fluid chromatography (UHPSFC) coupled to quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Based on the results of the column screening a method for profiling of multiple lipid species from the major lipid classes was developed. Stationary phases containing β-hydroxy amines, i.e. 1-AA, DEA and 2-PIC, yielded strong retention and poor peak shapes of zwitterionic lipids with primary amine groups, such as phosphatidylserines, phosphatidylethanolamines and its lyso forms. The BEH and HSS-C18 columns showed strong retention of polar and nonpolar lipids, respectively. The Diol column retained the majority of major lipid classes and also produced symmetric peaks. In addition, this column also produced the highest resolution within and between major lipid classes. An injection solvent composed of methanol:chloroform (1:2, v:v) and the addition of 20 mM ammonium formate in the mobile phase improved chromatographic separation and mass spectrometry detection in comparison to ammonium acetate or absence of additive. Finally, chromatographic and mass spectrometric parameters were optimized for the Diol column using a design of experiments approach. The separation mechanism on the Diol column depended on the lipid functionality and the length and degree of unsaturation of the acyl groups. The developed method could resolve 18 lipid classes and multiple lipids within each class, from blood serum and brain tissue in 11 min., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. - Abstract
The benefits of exercise training in virtually all humans, including those with a clinically stable chronic disease are numerous. The potential value lies in the fact that functional capacity is oftentimes significantly compromised. Exercise training not only play a role in reversing some of the pathophysiologic processes associated with chronic diseases but also improves clinical trajectory. Given the significant pathologic consequences associated with pulmonary hypertension and its implications for deteriorating right ventricular function as well as the perceived potential for a precipitous and possibly critical drop in cardiac output during periods of physical exertion, exercise training was historically not recommended for these patients. More recently, a promising body of literature demonstrating the safety and efficacy of exercise training (with benefit on exercise capacity, peak oxygen consumption and quality of life) in pulmonary hypertension patients has emerged, but the conclusion about the effects of exercise training were non-exhaustive and therefore there is still a lack of knowledge regarding exercise training for these patients. Thus, we aim to ascertain the current effectiveness of exercise rehabilitation for pulmonary hypertension by performing a brief overview on the latest currently available evidences in such an "at a glance" synopsis addressed to summarize/quantify the more recent existing body of literature. KEY MESSAGES Exercise training was historically not recommended in pulmonary hypertension. Recently, exercise training safety-efficacy in pulmonary hypertension has emerged. Exercise training should be recommended in addition to optimal medical therapy.

- Abstract
Obesity is a growing global health concern, with a rapid increase being observed in morbid obesity. Obesity is associated with an increased cardiovascular risk and earlier onset of cardiovascular morbidity. The growing obesity epidemic is a major source of unsustainable health costs and morbidity and mortality because of hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, certain cancers and major cardiovascular diseases. Similar to obesity, hypertension is a key unfavorable health metric that has disastrous health implications: currently, hypertension is the leading contributor to global disease burden, and the direct and indirect costs of treating hypertension are exponentially higher. Poor lifestyle characteristics and health metrics often cluster together to create complex and difficult-to-treat phenotypes: excess body mass is such an example, facilitating a cascade of pathophysiological sequelae that create such as a direct obesity-hypertension link, which consequently increases cardiovascular risk. Although some significant issues regarding assessment/management of obesity remain to be addressed and the underlying mechanisms governing these disparate effects of obesity on cardiovascular disease are complex and not completely understood, a variety of factors could have a critical role. Consequently, a comprehensive and exhaustive investigation of this relationship should analyze the pathogenetic factors and pathophysiological mechanisms linking obesity to hypertension as they provide the basis for a rational therapeutic strategy in the aim to fully describe and understand the obesity-hypertension link and discuss strategies to address the potential negative consequences from the perspective of both primordial prevention and treatment for those already impacted by this condition.

- Abstract
Petroleum pollution results in co-contamination by different classes of molecules, entailing the occurrence of marine sediments difficult to remediate, as in the case of the Ancona harbor (Mediterranean Sea, Italy). Autochthonous bioaugmentation (ABA), by exploiting the indigenous microbes of the environment to be treated, could represent a successful bioremediation strategy. In this perspective we aimed to i) identify the main drivers of the bacterial communities' richness in the sediments, ii) establish enrichment cultures with different hydrocarbon pollutants evaluating their effects on the bacterial communities' composition, and iii) obtain a collection of hydrocarbon degrading bacteria potentially exploitable in ABA. The correlation between the selection of different specialized bacterial populations and the type of pollutants was demonstrated by culture-independent analyses, and by establishing a collection of bacteria with different hydrocarbon degradation traits. Our observations indicate that pollution dictates the diversity of sediment bacterial communities and shapes the ABA potential in harbor sediments., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. - Abstract
Ultrasound assisted matrix solid phase dispersive extraction was applied for the selective isolation and clean-up of tetracyclines (oxytetracycline, tetracycline, epi-chlorotetracycline, chlorotetracycline and doxycycline) from milk. Target analytes were determined by an accurate and sensitive chromatographic analytical method, which was validated to meet the European Legislation criteria. The separation was performed on a LiChroCART-LiChrospher® 100 RP-18 (5μm, 250×4mm) analytical column, operated at ambient temperature, followed by diode array detection. Validation included investigation of linearity, selectivity, stability, limits of detection and quantitation, decision limit, detection capability, trueness, precision and ruggedness according to the Youden's approach. Limits of quantitation of examined tetracyclines were from 14.5 to 56.6μg/kg significantly lower than respective Maximum Residue Limits, whereas recoveries ranged from 82.0% to 108%. The applicability of the method was evaluated using milk samples purchased from local market. Accuracy of the method was additionally proved by analysis of bovine milk certified reference material (BCR®-492)., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.)

- Abstract
Importance: Heterotopic glial tissue is a rare, benign congenital anomaly that can present as a fibrous mass with or without overt signs of neural tissue origin, such as overlying alopecia, pigmentation, or a "hair collar" sign. These lesions are typically found in the midline area, though they have been found laterally involving the mastoid and middle ear regions. As demonstrated by this case report, a lateral scalp lesion may represent glial tissue even if fine-needle aspiration does not demonstrate neural findings., Observations: This single case report represents a 7-month-old white infant who presented with a lateral scalp mass over the mastoid area. The mass enlarged as she grew, causing external auditory canal obstruction. Fine-needle aspiration demonstrated fibrovascular tissue, and computed tomographic imaging showed a small bony defect over the mastoid area but no intracranial communication. The final pathologic finding was consistent with glial choristoma, a rare, benign congenital lesion involving heterotopic neural tissue., Conclusions and Relevance: Congenital scalp lesions can represent heterotopic neural tissue and warrant complete evaluation prior to treatment; fine-needle aspiration biopsy is not necessarily reliable to rule out neurogenic origin, as demonstrated in this case. The possibility for intracranial extension should always be considered and fully evaluated with computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging prior to operative intervention. Most prior published case reports of heterotopic glial tissue involving the mastoid and/or middle ear spaces describe adults and suggest that such lesions were acquired later in life. This report of a lateral glial choristoma overlying the mastoid bone in an infant supports a congenital origin of this lesion.

- Abstract
The spatial distribution and diversity of metal-reducing bacterial assemblages belonging to Geobacteraceae were studied in groundwaters with different physicochemical characteristics by means of terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) molecular fingerprinting, as applied to the 16S rRNA gene. The physicochemical conditions of these environments were unfavorable to support active-metal-reducing processes. The highest diversity of Geobacteraceae was observed in groundwater samples characterized by the highest dissolved Fe and Mn concentrations. T-RFLP analyses revealed major differences in the Geobacteraceae ribotype diversity and community composition of the groundwater samples as well as a considerable variability and spatial turnover of Geobacteraceae assemblages. Results from this work suggest that changes in the physicochemical characteristics of the aquifer deeply influence the richness and community structure of Geobacteraceae, even in those systems in which metal-reduction processes are not dominant.

- Abstract
Spatial and temporal changes in phytoplankton production and bacterial C demand were investigated at four stations in the Northern Adriatic Sea over 3 years. The effect of the Po River plume was observed at the western stations; in particular, the northernmost one (B06) showed the highest values of primary production, both as hourly peaks (up to 14 mg C m(-3) h(-1)) and daily water column integrated values (up to 740 mg C m(-2) day(-1)), the southern station (C04) was only sporadically influenced and did not differ significantly from the easternmost ones (C12 and B13), where the lowest TPP values were recorded (around 1 mg C m(-3) h(-1)). In this study the first in situ data are reported on short-term phytoplankton C extra cellular release in the Northern Adriatic Sea. At every station a considerable percentage of primary production (PER>20% as an average, with peaks of up to 70%) was released as dissolved organic carbon. In particular, an association of fairly high PER (>10%) and specific production (Pb>10 mg C mg chl(-1) h(-1)) was observed from spring to summer, when the mucilage phenomenon usually starts.

- Abstract
Although the relationships between trophic conditions and viral dynamics have been widely explored in different pelagic environments, there have been few attempts at independent estimates of both viral production and decay. In this study, we investigated factors controlling the balance between viral production and decay along a trophic gradient in the north Adriatic basin, providing independent estimates of these variables and determining the relative importance of nanoflagellate grazing and viral life strategies. Increasing trophic conditions induced an increase of bacterioplankton growth rates and of the burst sizes. As a result, eutrophic waters displayed highest rates of viral production, which considerably exceeded observed rates of viral decay (up to 2.9 x 10(9) VLP liter(-1) h(-1)). Viral decay was also higher in eutrophic waters, where it accounted for ca. 40% of viral production, and dropped significantly to 1.3 to 10.7% in oligotrophic waters. These results suggest that viral production and decay rates may not necessarily be balanced in the short term, resulting in a net increase of viruses in the system. In eutrophic waters nanoflagellate grazing, dissolved-colloidal substances, and lysogenic infection were responsible together for the removal of ca. 66% of viral production versus 17% in oligotrophic waters. Our results suggest that different causative agents are primarily responsible for the removal of viruses from the water column in different trophic conditions. Factors other than those considered in the past might shed light on processes responsible for the removal and/or decay of viral particles from the water column.
