Reservoirs are the most common deep lakes in Spain, as a consequence of water needs and dry climate. Although these aquatic systems can play an important ecological role in such an area with few large natural lakes, they can also provide new habitats for exotic species, which can colonize ecosystems that native species have not explored yet. Here we present our results for a biannual survey of the ostracod fauna from 24 reservoirs in Xúquer River basin. We check which variables affect ostracod presence, test for differences between winter and summer assemblages, and compare our data with previous available ostracod records from the same river drainage network. Our results reveal that ostracod presence is positively related to high diversity of the invertebrate community and reservoir volume, and negatively with phosphorus concentration. Among the 22 species found, it is noteworthy the first Iberian record of Ilyocypris getica and the second European record of Candonocypris novaezelandiae. Ostracod assemblages significantly vary between summer and winter, and strong differences are found between ostracod communities of reservoirs and those from their connected rivers. Remarkably higher frequency of exotic species in the reservoirs confirms previous findings about the facilitation that artificial ecosystems confer to aquatic invasions.

Severe nonexertional (resting) chest pain may be due to myocardial ischemia, esophageal dysfunction, psychiatric disorder, or any combination thereof and frequently poses a difficult diagnostic challenge. Our aim was to investigate causes of chest pain in patients with coronary artery disease. Forty-five patients with angiographically proven obstructive coronary lesions and recurrent chest pain at rest were studied; 18 had refractory pain despite cardiac therapy (problem group), and 27 had documented myocardial ischemia (control group). Esophageal manometry, edrophonium provocation, 24-hr pH studies, and psychiatric interview were performed in all patients. The clinical evolution and the outcome of specific treatment during follow-up was used to establish the etiology of chest pain. Esophageal dysfunction was identified in all problem patients and in 52% of controls, and the esophagus was incriminated as the source of pain in 8 (44%) and 5 (18.5%), respectively. After a mean follow-up of 49 months (range 24-76 months), the cause of chest pain in the problem group was identified as panic disorder in 9 patients (50%), gastroesophageal reflux in 6 (33%), esophageal dysmotility in 2 (11%), and gallstone disease in 1 (6%). Of the control patients, 18 (67%) had ischemic pain alone, while 9 had concurrent causes: panic disorder in 5 (19%) and esophageal dysfunction in 4 (15%). Esophageal dysfunction and psychiatric disturbances are common in patients with coronary artery disease presenting with resting chest pain, and may contribute to patients' symptoms. Grazing rates of zooplankton were analysed in the summer of 1999 in Yellow Belly Lake, an oligotrophic system in the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho (U.S.A.). The colonial rotifer Conochilus unicornis was a dominant species in the epilimnion, with densities reaching 20 colonies l-1 (ca. 400 ind. l-1). Clearance rates were measured with an in situ Haney Grazing chamber and synthetic microspheres 5, 9 and 23Mum in diameter. At epilimnetic temperatures of around 14 deg. C, mean clearance rates for 5Mum particles ranged from 30 to65 Mul ind.-1 h-1. Clearance rates were 2-9 times higher on the 5Mum spheres than on the 9 Mum spheres, and C. unicornis almost never fed on the 23 Mum spheres. Grazing rates did not change over the diel cycle. Clearance rates declined more than 10-foldas temperatures declined from 14 deg. C in the epilimnion to 7 deg.C in the metalimnion. In the epilimnion, grazing by C. unicornis wasmore important than grazing by crustaceans in the community, at least on particles ???9Mum. The results show the importance of grazing byrotifers in lakes, and the significance of spatial variations that influence grazing rates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Functional annotation and interpretation of genetic variants are a critical step in genetic diagnosis, as it may lead to personalized therapeutic options and genetic counseling. While the number of confirmed pathogenic genetic variants in an individual is relatively low, the number of variants of uncertain significance (VOUS) can be considerably higher, increasing the number of potential carriers of genetic disorders. Thus, reducing uncertainty and assessing the real effect of VOUS are crucial for clinical and medical genetics. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of genetic screening technologies in accurately predicting pathogenic variants and their corresponding disease prevalence in a cohort of over 6000 healthy individuals involved in assisted reproduction programs. Using data from 305 genes associated with recessive disorders, we determined the frequency of carriers of pathogenic variants and VOUS in our dataset and compared the predicted prevalence based on this information with reported population prevalence data. Prior research on metacommunities has largely focused on snapshot surveys, often overlooking temporal dynamics. In this study, our aim was to compare the insights obtained from metacommunity analyses based on a spatial approach repeated over time, with a spatio-temporal approach that consolidates all data into a single model. We empirically assessed the influence of temporal variation in the environment and spatial connectivity on the structure of metacommunities in tropical and Mediterranean temporary ponds. Employing a standardized methodology across both regions, we surveyed multiple freshwater taxa in three time periods within the same hydrological year from multiple temporary ponds in each region. To evaluate how environmental, spatial and temporal influences vary between the two approaches, we used nonlinear variation partitioning analyses based on generalized additive models. Overall, this study underscores the importance of adopting spatio-temporal analytics to better understand the processes shaping metacommunities. While the spatial approach suggested that environmental factors had a greater influence, our spatio-temporal analysis revealed that spatial connectivity was the primary driver influencing metacommunity structure in both regions. Temporal effects were equally important as environmental effects, suggesting a significant role of ecological succession in metacommunity structure.

The metacommunity concept provides a theoretical framework that aims at explaining organism distributions by a combination of environmental filtering, dispersal, and drift. However, few works have attempted a multitaxon approach and even fewer have compared two distant biogeographical regions using the same methodology. We tested the expectation that temperate (mediterranean-climate) pond metacommunities would be more influenced by environmental and spatial processes than tropical ones, because of stronger environmental gradients and a greater isolation of waterbodies. However, the pattern should be different among groups of organisms depending on their dispersal abilities. We surveyed 30 tropical and 32 mediterranean temporary ponds from Costa Rica and Spain, respectively, and obtained data on 49 environmental variables. We characterized the biological communities of bacteria and archaea (from the water column and the sediments), phytoplankton, zooplankton, benthic invertebrates, amphibians and birds, and estimated the relative role of space and environment on metacommunity organization for each group and region, by means of variation partitioning using generalized additive models. Purely environmental effects were important in both tropical and mediterranean ponds, but stronger in the latter, probably due to their larger limnological heterogeneity. Spatially correlated environment and pure spatial effects were greater in the tropics, related to higher climatic heterogeneity and dispersal processes (e.g., restriction, surplus) acting at different scales. The variability between taxonomic groups in the contribution of spatial and environmental factors to metacommunity variation was very wide, but higher in active, compared with passive, dispersers. Higher environmental effects were observed in mediterranean passive dispersers, and higher spatial effects in tropical passive dispersers. The unexplained variation was larger in the tropical setting, suggesting a higher role for stochastic processes, unmeasured environmental factors, or biotic interactions in the tropics, although this difference affected some actively dispersing groups (insects and birds) more than passive dispersers. These results, despite our limitations in comparing only two regions, provide support, for a wide variety of aquatic organisms, for the classic view of stronger abiotic niche constraints in temperate areas compared with the tropics. Restoration is an ecological tool that aims to recover the prior conditions and functioning of a degraded habitat. Three restoration projects targeted a dune slack system in the Eastern Iberian Peninsula and created a mosaic of ponds restored over three different periods: 1998, 2003 and 2007, the latter coinciding with the start of our study. Restoration works consisted of digging out the pond basin to its original morphometry. We monitored 12 restored ponds (six recent, three intermediate and three older ones) monthly, over four consecutive hydrological years (from 2007 until 2011) characterizing the most important limnological factors in order to disentangle the effects of man-made restoration over time. A multivariate statistical approach was used to detect the environmental trends of these ponds related to their restoration ages. Recently restored ponds tended to converge with older ones by decreasing values of conductivity, pH, oxygen and depth and increasing vegetation cover over time. Detected differences seem to address age-specific processes which increase over time after restoration: silting, salt leaching or an increase in organic matter decomposition. The toxicity of Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis on zooplanktonic microcrustaceans was evaluated using individuals collected in coastal wetlands where this larvicide has been used for mosquito control over the last decades. We tested five zooplankton species that coexist with mosquito larvae: two copepods (both nauplii and adults of Tropocyclops prasinus and Acantocyclops americanus), and three cladocerans (Ceriodaphnia reticulata, Chydorus sphaericus, and Daphnia cf. pulex). Our experiments included seven replicates of six concentrations (Bti Vectobac12AS 1200 Bti ITU/mg): 0, 5, 25, 50, 250, and 500 mg L -1 . We analyzed acute and sub-chronic effects after a single inoculation. Despite the high variability of responses among our tested organisms, we found a general pattern of increasing mortality with concentration and time. We conclude that negative effects at the community level are not unlikely as some species were affected at doses close to those used in field applications.

Human-mediated dispersal has rarely been considered in wetland conservation strategies at regional scales, yet high concern exists about this aspect for (inter-)national management considering invasive species in other aquatic systems. In this context, we aim at understanding the role of human-mediated dispersal by footwear in protected wetlands with high conservation value. Zooplankton and zoobenthos were sampled in 13 shallow lakes in central Spain and, at the same time, mud attached to waders was collected and later cultured in deionized water under laboratory conditions for 4 weeks. Two-hundred and four individuals belonging to 19 invertebrate taxa were recovered after hatching; Ostracoda (84 %), Cladocera (53 %), Copepoda (30 %), Anostraca (30 %), and Notostraca (7 %) were the most frequent groups among the hatched crustaceans. NMDS and PERMANOVA analyses showed significant differences between the dispersed (via footwear) and the source active metacommunity, suggesting different dispersal abilities among the species found. Human vectors facilitate dispersal among protected lakes, which could eventuality lead to biotic homogenization and faster spread of non-indigenous species. Preservation strategies and education campaigns associated to target humans in close contact with water bodies should be imperative in conservation management of protected lakes.

Background: The esophagus may be the origin of chest pain clinically indistinguishable from that of myocardial ischemia. Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) and esophageal motility disorders (EMDs) are the main causes of esophageal chest pain, and esophageal motility tests are important for an appropriate diagnosis. We studied 125 unselected patients with angiographically normal coronary arteries presenting with atypical (resting) angina which was shown not to be of cardiac origin., Methods: Stationary esophageal manometry and 24-hour pH studies were performed in all patients, and 116 of them were submitted to edrophonium provocation test (Tensilon, 10 mg as IV bolus)., Results: Spastic EMDs were identified as an isolated abnormality in 23 patients (18%), whereas GER was documented in 70 patients (56%). Esophageal dysmotility at baseline manometry (n = 40), a positive edrophonium test (n = 19), abnormal acid reflux indices by 24-hour pH recording (n = 62), and association of chest pain with acid reflux during pH testing (n = 24) variably overlapped in many patients. The esophagus was directly blamed as the source of atypical angina in 33 patients (26%) who had induction of their usual chest pain by cholinergic stimulation and/or association of spontaneous pain events with acid reflux., Conclusions: Esophageal dysfunction in common in patients with atypical angina considered not to be of cardiac origin and contributes to patients' symptoms. Because they may detect treatable causes of chest pain such as GER or contribute to management by assessing the diagnosis of EMD, esophageal motility tests are indicated in many patients with noncardiac chest pain.

To assess the prognostic value of exercise left ventricular function, and if this test improves the prognostic value of clinical data and exercise test, 146 patients (mean age 56 +/- 9 years) underwent rest and exercise radionuclide angiography, 10 days after myocardial infarction. During follow-up (mean 16 +/- 5 months), 32 patients had new coronary events: 5 died, 9 had a new myocardial infarction and the remaining 18 developed unstable angina (Class III-IV of the CCS classification). Patients with new coronary events had more frequently severe left ventricular failure (Killip III-IV) (15% vs 3%; p less than 0.05) and postinfarction angina (32% vs 9%; p less than 0.01) than their counterparts. There were no differences regarding rest ejection fraction between both groups of patients. Exercise ejection fraction increased significantly (50 +/- 14% to 56 +/- 16%, p less than 0.001), while there was no change in patients with new coronary events (46 +/- 16% to 43 +/- 15%, NS). Logistic regression analysis including only clinical data identified postinfarction angina (p less than 0.01) and left ventricular failure (Killip III-IV) (p less than 0.01) as independent predictors of new coronary events. The sensitivity and specificity of the regression equation obtained with clinical data were 43% and 90%, respectively. Analyzing data from clinical variables, as well as exercise test and both, rest and exercise radionuclide angiography, logistic regression analysis identified, exercise ejection fraction (p less than 0.001), postinfarction angina (p less than 0.01) and rest ejection fraction (p less than 0.05) as independent predictors of new coronary events.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Doxorubicin, an antineoplastic agent, was encapsulated in liposomes of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine with or without cholesterol, by the extrusion procedure. Doxorubicin was added to the lipid before drying, or was present in the rehydration buffer, and the influence of the method of encapsulation on size and polydispersity was determined by photon correlation spectroscopy. Results showed an important interaction between doxorubicin and liposomes, although cholesterol-containing vesicles were those that underwent the strongest insertion of the drug. One important parameter, which determined the extension of such interaction, was the curvature of the vesicle bilayer. So, liposomes extruded through a 50 nm membrane filter suffered the highest relative size variation in comparison with empty liposomes. Doxorubicin also produced an increase in polydispersity of vesicle population; therefore its presence resulted in some fusion and/or aggregation processes. The stability of liposomes was dependent on lipid content, on the method of drug trapping and on the presence or absence of such drug. Encapsulation efficiency seemed to be inversely related to liposome stability. Maximal values, which never exceed 0.015 +/- 0.005 mumol of drug per mumol of lipid, were obtained when the drug was dried together with the lipids.
