The breeding biology and ecology of the Little Tinamou (Ciypturellis soui) is poorly known due to its secretive habits and cryptic coloration. We used radio telemetry and temperature data-loggers to monitor radio-tagged tinamous and nests in the subtropical wet forest life zone in a protected rural site near Cali, Colombia, between February 2013 and March 2015. Population density was higher on a transect in continuous primary forest than in 3 transects in secondgrowth forest fragments. Peak breeding occurred during the main rainy season of September-December. Simultaneous female and male home range overlap during incubation indicates behavioral monogamy in 4 radio-tagged pairs. The absence of female home range overlap with that of an incubating male suggests an instance of polvgynandry. Male home range size was greatest prior to breeding (3.76 [+ or -] 2.31 ha, minimum convex polygon) and decreased in size during the egg and chick stages. Parental care was provided only by males, which displayed moderately high nest attendance during incubation (77.5% [+ or -] 4.5% on nest per 24 h period) and while foraging with chicks after hatching. Females vocalized more frequently and with different vocalizations than males. Females were larger than males in body mass (by 8.8%), body length (by 9.5%), tarsus (by 9.4%), and wing (by 9.4%). Our sexual dimorphism findings are consistent with female defense of territory. Adults were diet generalists. 72% [+ or -] 29%. of the fecal samples examined contained material of 9 plant species and 9% [+ or -] 13% of the fecal samples contained pieces of 4 orders of arthropods. El traslapc simultaneo de areas de ambito domestico durante la incubacion en 4 parejas dc adultos indica monogamia conductual. La ausencia de traslapc del area dc ambito domestico dc la hembra con el macho que se encontraba incubando sugiere un caso poliginandria. El area de ambito domestico de los machos rue mas grandc previo a la anidacion (3.76 [+ or -] 2.31 ha, poligono minimo convexo) y disminuyo su lumano durante las etapas de hucvos y polluclos. El cuidado parental lue realizado solamente por machos, que mostraron una atencion del nido moderadamente alta durante la incubacion (77.5 [+ or -] 4.5% sobrc nido por un periodo de 24 h) y mientras forrajca con los polluclos despues de la eclosion. Las hembras vocali/aron mas frecucntcmente y con diferentcs cantos que los machos. Las hembras presentaron mayor masa corporal (8.8%), longitud corporal (9.5%), tarso (9.4%) y ala (9.4%) que los machos. Los resultados dc dimorfismo sexual son consistentes con defensa de territorio. Abstract: Whether an ecological community is controlled from above or below remains a popular framework that continues generating interesting research questions and takes on especially important meaning in agroecosystems. We describe the regulation from above of three coffee herbivores, a leaf herbivore (the green coffee scale, Coccus viridis), a seed predator (the coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei), and a plant pathogen (the coffee rust disease, caused by Hemelia vastatrix) by various natural enemies, emphasizing the remarkable complexity involved. We emphasize the intersection of this classical question of ecology with the burgeoning field of complex systems, including references to chaos, critical transitions, hysteresis, basin or boundary collision, and spatial self-organization, all aimed at the applied question of pest control in the coffee agroecosystem.

What forces structure ecological assemblages? A key limitation to general insights about assemblage structure is the availability of data that are collected at a small spatial grain (local assemblages) and a large spatial extent (global coverage). Here, we present published and unpublished data from 51 ,388 ant abundance and occurrence records of more than 2,693 species and 7,953 morphospecies from local assemblages collected at 4,212 locations around the world. Ants were selected because they are diverse and abundant globally, comprise a large fraction of animal biomass in most terrestrial communities, and are key contributors to a range of ecosystem functions. Data were collected between 1949 and 2014, and include, for each geo-referenced sampling site, both the identity of the ants collected and details of sampling design, habitat type, and degree of disturbance. The aim of compiling this data set was to provide comprehensive species abundance data in order to test relationships between assemblage structure and environmental and biogeographic factors. Data were collected using a variety of standardized methods, such as pitfall and Winkler traps, and will be valuable for studies investigating large-scale forces structuring local assemblages. Understanding such relationships is particularly critical under current rates of global change. We encourage authors holding additional data on systematically collected ant assemblages, especially those in dry and cold, and remote areas, to contact us and contribute their data to this growing data set.

The PREDICTS project-Projecting Responses of Ecological Diversity In Changing Terrestrial Systems (www.predicts.org.uk)-has collated from published studies a large, reasonably representative database of comparable samples of biodiversity from multiple sites that differ in the nature or intensity of human impacts relating to land use. We have used this evidence base to develop global and regional statistical models of how local biodiversity responds to these measures. We describe and make freely available this 2016 release of the database, containing more than 3.2 million records sampled at over 26,000 locations and representing over 47,000 species. We outline how the database can help in answering a range of questions in ecology and conservation biology. To our knowledge, this is the largest and most geographically and taxonomically representative database of spatial comparisons of biodiversity that has been collated to date; it will be useful to researchers and international efforts wishing to model and understand the global status of biodiversity.

Many studies have focused on the impacts of climate change on biological assemblages, yet little is known about how climate interacts with other major anthropogenic influences on biodiversity, such as habitat disturbance. Using a unique global database of 1128 local ant assemblages, we examined whether climate mediates the effects of habitat disturbance on assemblage structure at a global scale. Species richness and evenness were associated positively with temperature, and negatively with disturbance. However, the interaction among temperature, precipitation and disturbance shaped species richness and evenness. The effect was manifested through a failure of species richness to increase substantially with temperature in transformed habitats at low precipitation. At low precipitation levels, evenness increased with temperature in undisturbed sites, peaked at medium temperatures in disturbed sites and remained low in transformed sites. In warmer climates with lower rainfall, the effects of increasing disturbance on species richness and evenness were akin to decreases in temperature of up to 9°C. Anthropogenic disturbance and ongoing climate change may interact in complicated ways to shape the structure of assemblages, with hot, arid environments likely to be at greatest risk.

The diversity of soil microbial organisms is rarely considered in restoration scenarios, even though this diversity is an important component of the ecological complexity that we aim to understand. Plant growth promoting microorganisms can positively affect plants by providing nutrients regularly, producing phytohormones to stimulate root growth and development, and modifying the rhizosphere environment. The present study evaluated, over a 5‐month period, the effects of inoculation of Inga densiflora nurse seedlings with rhizospheric microorganisms taken from a neighbor forest habitat, in the context of an early‐stage ecological restoration project in a Tropical Dry Forest area invaded by Guinea grass (Panicum maximum). The inoculation's effect on two response variables was evaluated: (1) growth of the seedling (I. densiflora), and (2) the diversity of bacteria and fungi, with an emphasis on genera associated with rhizosphere that promote vegetation growth. Bacterial and fungal diversity were evaluated using the metabarcoding method and Hill numbers q = 0, 1, and 2. Significantly higher microorganism diversity was found in the rhizosphere of inoculated seedlings compared to non‐inoculated seedlings. However, no significant differences were found in the growth of inoculated versus non‐inoculated seedlings. This evidence suggests that, in the short term and through a restoration context, inoculating trees with microorganisms taken directly from a neighboring forest can increase bacterial diversity, and possibly also fungal diversity. While understanding the intricacies of these processes requires further study, this technique seems to be a promising approach for recovering the diversity of rhizosphere microbiomes during ecological restoration. Entre marzo y octubre de 2002 se compararon los ensamblajes de hormigas que forrajean en el suelo en un sistema no manejado (reserva natural El Ciprés) y en algunas fincas vecinas. En dos transectos de 100 m se instalaron estaciones de muestreo cada 10 m con trampa de caída (pitfall) y cebo de atún epígeo durante 880 h y 92 días respectivamente. En 1471 eventos de captura se determinaron 68 especies distribuidas en 26 géneros y 8 subfamilias. En el sistema silvopastoril- guayaba y en monocultivo de granadilla (Passiflora ligularis) dominaron las especies de hormigas mientras que la distribución fue más equitativa en los usos del terreno con estructura vegetal más compleja (bosque, café, sucesión temprana y banco de forrajes). El sistema silvopastoril-guayaba fue el más rico en especies (31) seguido por café (30) y por el bosque y la sucesión temprana (29). El flujo de especies fue alto en bosque, café y sucesión temprana, indicando que la calidad de la matriz es factor importante para el mantenimiento de la biodiversidad.
