We show how the recurrence phenomenon characteristic of the nonlinear stage of induced modulational instability in a passive fiber is affected by forcing. An additional linear amplification, even if extremely weak, induces separatrix crossing in correspondence of critical values of the gain around which the recurrence process considerably slows down, switching between dynamical orbits of different kind. We present evidence for such phenomenon in a fiber optics experiment where the gain is finely tuned by means of Raman amplification. We study modulational instability in a fiber system resembling a dispersion-managed link where the sign of the group-velocity dispersion varies randomly according to a telegraph process. We find that the instability gain of stochastic origin converges, for long fiber segment mean length (the inverse of the transition rate between the two values), to the conventional values found in a homogeneous anomalous dispersion fiber. For short fiber segments, the gain bands are broadened and the maximum gain decreases. By employing correlation splitting formulas, we obtain closed form equations that allow us to estimate the instability gain from the linearized nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. We compare the analytical to the numerical results obtained in a Monte Carlo spirit. The analysis is proven to be correct not only for a fluctuating group-velocity dispersion, but also including fourth-order dispersion (both constant or varying according to a synchronous or independent telegraph process). Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are low-temperature processable hybrid semiconductor materials with exceptional performances that are revolutionizing the field of optoelectronic devices. Despite their great potential, commercial deployment is hindered by MHPs lack of stability and durability, mainly attributed to ions migration and chemical interactions with the device electrodes. To address these issues, 2D layered MHPs have been investigated as possible device interlayers or active material substitutes to reduce ion migration and improve stability. Here we consider the 2D perovskite PEA2PbBr4 that was recently discussed as very promising candidate for X-ray direct detection. While the increased resilience of PEA2PbBr4 detectors have already been reported, the physical mechanisms responsible for such improvement compared to the standard "3D" perovskites are not still fully understood. To unravel the charge transport process in PEA2PbBr4 crystals thought to underly the device better performance, we adapted an investigation technique previously used on highly resistive inorganic semiconductors, called photo induced current transient spectroscopy (PICTS). We demonstrate that PICTS can detect three distinct trap states (T1, T2, and T3) with different activation energies, and that the trap states evolution upon X-ray exposure can explain PEA2PbBr4 superior radiation tolerance and reduced aging effects. Overall, our results provide essential insights into the stability and electrical characteristics of 2D perovskites and their potential application as reliable and direct X-ray detectors.

The evaluation and consideration of the mean flow in wave evolution equations are necessary for the accurate prediction of fluid particle trajectories under wave groups, with relevant implications in several domains, from the transport of pollutants in the ocean, to the estimation of energy and momentum exchanges between the waves at small scales and the ocean circulation at large scale. We derive an expression of the mean flow at finite water depth which, in contrast to other approximations in the literature, accurately accords with the deep-water limit at third order in steepness, and is equivalent to second-order formulations in intermediate water. We also provide envelope evolution equations at fourth order in steepness for the propagation of unidirectional wave groups either in time or space that include the respective mean flow term. We study modulational instability in a dispersion-managed system where the sign of the group-velocity dispersion is changed at uniformly distributed random distances around a reference length. An analytical technique is presented to estimate the instability gain from the linearized nonlinear Schr{\"o}dinger equation, which is also solved numerically. The comparison of numerical and analytical results confirms the validity of our approach. Modulational instability of purely stochastic origin appears. A competition between instability bands of periodic and stochastic origin is also discussed. We show that even small dissipation can strongly affect the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou recurrence phenomenon. Taking the fully nonlinear stage of modulational instability as an experimentally accessible example, we show that the linear attenuation induces the symmetry of the recurrence to be broken through separatrix crossing occurring at multiple critical values of the attenuation. We provide experimental evidence for this phenomenon in a fiber optics experiment designed in such a way that the effective losses can be carefully tailored by techniques based on Raman amplification.

We report the observation of the thermalization of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou recurrence process in optical fibers. We show the transition from a reversible regime to an irreversible one, revealing a spectrally thermalized state. To do so, we actively compensate the fiber loss to make the observation of several recurrences possible. We inject into the fiber a combination of three coherent continuous waves, which we call Fourier modes, and a random noise. We enhance the noise-driven modulation instability process against the coherent one by boosting the input noise power level to speed up the evolution to the thermalization. The distributions of the Fourier modes power along the fiber length are recorded thanks to a multi-heterodyne time-domain reflectometer. At low input noise levels, we observe up to four recurrences. Whereas, at higher noise levels, the Fourier modes fade into the noise-driven modulation instability spectrum revealing that the process reached an irreversible thermalized state., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We study modulational instability (MI) in optical fibers with random group-velocity dispersion (GVD). We consider Gaussian and dichotomous colored stochastic processes. We resort to different analytical methods (namely, the cumulant expansion and the functional approach) and assess their reliability in estimating the MI gain of stochastic origin. If the power spectral density (PSD) of the GVD fluctuations is centered at null wavenumber, we obtain low-frequency MI sidelobes which converge to those given by a white noise perturbation when the correlation length tends to 0. If instead the stochastic processes are modulated in space, one or more MI sidelobe pairs corresponding to the well-known parametric resonance (PR) condition can be found. A transition from small and broad sidelobes to peaks nearly indistinguishable from PR-MI is predicted, in the limit of large perturbation amplitudes and correlation lengths of the random process. We find that the cumulant expansion provides good analytical estimates for small PSD values and small correlation lengths, when the MI gain is very small. The functional approach is rigorous only for the dichotomous processes, but allows us to model a wider range of parameters and to predict the existence of MI sidelobes comparable to those observed in homogeneous fibers of anomalous GVD, Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures submitted

We study modulational instability (MI) in optical fibers with random group velocity dispersion (GVD) generated by sharply localized perturbations of a normal GVD fiber that are either randomly or periodically placed along the fiber and that have random strength. This perturbation leads to the appearance of low frequency MI side lobes that grow with the strength of the perturbations, whereas they are faded by randomness in their position. If the random perturbations exhibit a finite average value, they can be compared with periodically perturbed fibers, where Arnold tongues appear. In that case, increased randomness in the strengths of the variations tends to affect the Arnold tongues less than increased randomness in their positions.

We introduce a dynamic stabilization scheme universally applicable to unidirectional nonlinear coherent waves. By abruptly changing the waveguiding properties, the breathing of wave packets subject to modulation instability can be stabilized as a result of the abrupt expansion a homoclinic orbit and its fall into an elliptic fixed point (center). We apply this concept to the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation framework and show that an Akhmediev breather envelope, which is at the core of Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou recurrence and extreme wave events, can be frozen into a steady periodic (dnoidal) wave by a suitable variation of a single external physical parameter. We experimentally demonstrate this general approach in the particular case of surface gravity water waves propagating in a wave flume with an abrupt bathymetry change. We theoretically and experimentally examine the effect of forcing and damping on systems that can be described by the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (NLSE), by making use of the phase-space predictions of the three-wave truncation of the spectrum. In the latter, only the fundamental frequency and the upper and lower sidebands are retained. Plane wave solutions to the NLSE exhibit modulation instability (MI) within a frequency band determined by a linear stability analysis. For modulation frequencies inside the MI-band, we experimentally demonstrate that forcing and damping cause a separatrix crossing during the evolution. Our experiments are performed on deep water waves, which are better described by the higher-order NLSE, the Dysthe equation. We therefore extend our analysis to this system. However, our conclusions are general. When the system is damped by the viscosity of the water, it is pulled outside the separatrix, which in the real space corresponds to a phase-shift of the envelope and therefore doubles the period of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou recurrence cycle. When the system is forced by the wind, it is pulled inside the separatrix. Furthermore, for modulation frequencies outside the conventional MI-band, we experimentally demonstrate that contrary to the linear prediction, we do observe a growth and decay cycle of the plane-wave modulation. Quantum cascade detectors (QCD) are unipolar infrared devices where the transport of the photo excited carriers takes place through confined electronic states, without an applied bias. In this photovoltaic mode, the detector's noise is not dominated by a dark shot noise process, therefore, performances are less degraded at high temperature with respect to photoconductive detectors. This work describes a 9 um QCD embedded into a patch-antenna metamaterial which operates with state-of-the-art performances. The metamaterial gathers photons on a collection area, Acoll, much bigger than the geometrical area of the detector, improving the signal to noise ratio up to room temperature. The background-limited detectivity at 83 K is 5.5 x 10^10 cm Hz^1/2 W^-1, while at room temperature, the responsivity is 50 mA/W at 0 V bias. Patch antenna QCD is an ideal receiver for a heterodyne detection set-up, where a signal at a frequency 1.4 GHz and T=295 K is reported as first demonstration of uncooled 9um photovoltaic receivers with GHz electrical bandwidth. These findings guide the research towards uncooled IR quantum limited detection.

We study the evolution of nonlinear surface gravity water-wave packets developing from modulational instability over an uneven bottom. A nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (NLSE) with coefficients varying in space along propagation is used as a reference model. Based on a low-dimensional approximation obtained by considering only three complex harmonic modes, we discuss how to stabilize a one-dimensional pattern in the form of train of large peaks sitting on a background and propagating over a significant distance. Our approach is based on a gradual depth variation, while its conceptual framework is the theory of autoresonance in nonlinear systems and leads to a quasi-frozen state. Three main stages are identified: amplification from small sideband amplitudes, separatrix crossing, and adiabatic conversion to orbits oscillating around an elliptic fixed point. Analytical estimates on the three stages are obtained from the low-dimensional approximation and validated by NLSE simulations. Our result will contribute to understand dynamical stabilization of nonlinear wave packets and the persistence of large undulatory events in hydrodynamics and other nonlinear dispersive media., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

The viscosity of water induces a vorticity near the free surface boundary. The resulting rotational component of the fluid velocity vector greatly complicates the water wave system. Several approaches to close this system have been proposed. Our analysis compares three common sets of model equations. The first set has a rotational kinematic boundary condition at the surface. In the second set, a gauge choice for the velocity vector is made that cancels the rotational contribution in the kinematic boundary condition, at the cost of rotational velocity in the bulk and a rotational pressure. The third set circumvents the problem by introducing two domains: the irrotational bulk and the vortical boundary layer. This comparison puts forward the link between rotational pressure on the surface and vorticity in the boundary layer, addresses the existence of nonlinear vorticity terms, and shows where approximations have been used in the models. We study statistical properties after a sudden episode of wind for water waves propagating in one direction. A wave with random initial conditions is propagated using a forced-damped higher order Nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (NLS). During the wind episode, the wave action increases, the spectrum broadens, the spectral mean shifts up and the Benjamin-Feir index (BFI) and the kurtosis increase. Conversely, after the wind episode, the opposite occurs for each quantity. The kurtosis of the wave height distribution is considered the main parameter that can indicate whether rogue waves are likely to occur in a sea state, and the BFI is often mentioned as a means to predict the kurtosis. However, we find that while there is indeed a quadratic relation between these two, this relationship is dependent on the details of the forcing and damping. Instead, a simple and robust quadratic relation does exist between the kurtosis and the bandwidth. This could allow for a single-spectrum assessment of the likelihood of rogue waves in a given sea state. In addition, as the kurtosis depends strongly on the damping and forcing coefficients, by combining the bandwidth measurement with the damping coefficient, the evolution of the kurtosis after the wind episode can be predicted., Comment: 30 pages, 12 figures

We discuss the impact of viscosity on nonlinear propagation of surface waves at the interface of air and a fluid of large depth. After a survey of the available approximations of the dispersion relation, we propose to modify the hydrodynamic boundary conditions to model both short and long waves. From them, we derive a nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation where both linear and nonlinear parts are modified by dissipation and show that the former plays the main role in both gravity and capillary-gravity waves while, in most situations, the latter represents only small corrections. We consider self-pulsing regimes in chains of Kerr nonlinear optical microresonators. By means of a supermodal diagonalization procedure of the conventional coupled-mode theory in time, we theoretically and numerically study the bifurcation diagrams of a singly pumped three-cavity and a doubly pumped four-cavity system: the latter allows us to predict thresholdless frequency tripling of a GHz modulation. We study a three-wave truncation of a recently proposed damped/forced high-order nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation for deep-water gravity waves under the effect of wind and viscosity. The evolution of the norm (wave-action) and spectral mean of the full model are well captured by the reduced dynamics. Three regimes are found for the wind-viscosity balance: we classify them according to the attractor in the phase-plane of the truncated system and to the shift of the spectral mean. A downshift can coexist with both net forcing and damping, i.e., attraction to period-1 or period-2 solutions. Upshift is associated with stronger winds, i.e., to a net forcing where the attractor is always a period-1 solution. We study a three-wave truncation of the high-order nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation for deepwater waves (HONLS, also named Dysthe equation). We validate our approach by comparing it to numerical simulation, distinguish the impact of the different fourth-order terms and classify the solutions according to their topology. This allows us to properly define the temporary spectral upshift occurring in the nonlinear stage of Benjamin-Feir instability and provides a tool for studying further generalizations of this model.

Discrete Event Simulation is a widely used technique that is used to model and analyze complex systems in many fields of science and engineering. The increasingly large size of simulation models poses a serious computational challenge, since the time needed to run a simulation can be prohibitively large. For this reason, Parallel and Distributes Simulation techniques have been proposed to take advantage of multiple execution units which are found in multicore processors, cluster of workstations or HPC systems. The current generation of HPC systems includes hundreds of thousands of computing nodes and a vast amount of ancillary components. Despite improvements in manufacturing processes, failures of some components are frequent, and the situation will get worse as larger systems are built. In this paper we describe FT-GAIA, a software-based fault-tolerant extension of the GAIA/ART\`IS parallel simulation middleware. FT-GAIA transparently replicates simulation entities and distributes them on multiple execution nodes. This allows the simulation to tolerate crash-failures of computing nodes; furthermore, FT-GAIA offers some protection against byzantine failures since synchronization messages are replicated as well, so that the receiving entity can identify and discard corrupted messages. We provide an experimental evaluation of FT-GAIA on a running prototype. We show that the nonlinear stage of modulational instability induced by parametric driving in the {\em defocusing} nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation can be accurately described by combining mode truncation and averaging methods, valid in the strong driving regime. The resulting integrable oscillator reveals a complex hidden heteroclinic structure of the instability. A remarkable consequence, validated by the numerical integration of the original model, is the existence of breather solutions separating different Fermi-Pasta-Ulam recurrent regimes. Our theory also shows that optimal parametric amplification unexpectedly occurs outside the bandwidth of the resonance (or Arnold tongues) arising from the linearised Floquet analysis.

We propose a flexible scheme based on three coupled optical microcavities which permits to achieve stable oscillations in the microwave range, the frequency of which depends only on the cavity coupling rates. We find the different dynamical regimes (soft and hard excitation) to affect the oscillation intensity but not their period. This configuration may permit to implement compact hyper-parametric sources on an integrated optical circuit, with interesting applications in communications, sensing and metrology., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

We have developed an analytical model based on the perturbation theory in order to study the optical propagation of two successive intense solitons in hollow-core photonic crystal fibers filled with Raman-active gases. Based on the time delay between the two solitons, we have found that the trailing soliton dynamics can experience unusual nonlinear phenomena such as spectral and temporal soliton oscillations and transport towards the leading soliton. The overall dynamics can lead to a spatiotemporal modulation of the refractive index with a uniform temporal period and a uniform or chirped spatial period.
