We report progress on the ongoing recalibration of the Wolf sunspot number (SN) and Group sunspot number (GN) following the release of version 2.0 of SN in 2015. This report constitutes both an update of the efforts reported in the 2016 Topical Issue of Solar Physics and a summary of work by the International Space Science Institute (ISSI) International Team formed in 2017 to develop optimal SN and GN re-construction methods while continuing to expand the historical sunspot number database. Significant progress has been made on the database side while more work is needed to bring the various proposed SN and (primarily) GN reconstruction methods closer to maturity, after which the new reconstructions (or combinations thereof) can be compared with (a) ``benchmark'' expectations for any normalization scheme (e.g., a general increase in observer normalization factors going back in time), and (b) independent proxy data series such as F10.7 and the daily range of variations of Earth's undisturbed magnetic field. New versions of the underlying databases for SN and GN will shortly become available for years through 2022 and we anticipate the release of next versions of these two time series in 2024., Comment: 21 figures, 4 tables. William Cranch Bond, director of the Harvard College Observatory in mid-19th century, carried out detailed sunspot observations during the period 1847-1849. We highlight Bond was the observer with the highest daily number of sunspot groups observed in Solar Cycle 9 recording 18 groups on 26 December 1848 according to the current sunspot group database. However, we have detected significant mistakes in these counts due to the use of sunspot position tables instead of solar drawings. Therefore, we have revisited the sunspot observations made by Bond, establishing a new group counting. Our new counts of the sunspot groups from Bond's drawings indicate that solar activity was previously overestimated. Moreover, after this new counting, Bond would not be the astronomer who recorded the highest daily group number for Solar Cycle 9 but Schmidt with 16 groups on 14 February 1849. We have also indicated the new highest annual group numbers recorded by any observer for the period 1847-1849 in order to correct those values applied in the "brightest star" method, which is used as a rough indicator of the solar activity level. Furthermore, a comparison between Bond's sunspot records and the sunspot observations made by Schwabe and Wolf is shown. We conclude that the statistics of Wolf and Bond are similar regarding to the group count. Additionally, Schwabe was able to observe smaller groups than Bond.

An analysis of the sunspot observations made by Hevelius during 1642-1645 is presented. These records are the only systematic sunspot observations just before the Maunder Minimum. We have studied different phenomena meticulously recorded by Hevelius after translating the original Latin texts. We re-evaluate the observations of sunspot groups by Hevelius during this period and obtain an average value 7% greater than that calculated from his observations given in the current group database. Furthermore, the average of the active day fraction obtained in this work from Hevelius' records previous to the Maunder Minimum is significantly greater than the solar activity level obtained from Hevelius' sunspot observations made during the Maunder Minimum (70% vs. 30%). We also present the butterfly diagram obtained from the sunspot positions recorded by Hevelius for the period 1642-1645. It can be seen that no hemispheric asymmetry exists during this interval, in contrast with the Maunder Minimum. Hevelius noted a ~3-month period that appeared to lack sunspots in early 1645 that gave the first hint of the impending Maunder Minimum. Recent studies claim that the Maunder Minimum was not a grand minimum period speculating that astronomers of that time, due to the Aristotelian ideas, did not record all sunspots that they observed, producing thus an underestimation of the solar activity level. However, we show the good quality of the sunspot records made by Hevelius indicates that his reports of sunspots were true to the observations.

Naked-eye sunspot observations (NESO, hereafter) have been recorded for last two millennia, approximately. This kind of records were made around the world, mainly in Asian civilizations, and they are compiled in several catalogues. In this work, we analyze solar activity in days of the 19th century when NESO were recorded. We found that only more than five sunspot groups were recorded in 39 % of days corresponding to these NESO events. Furthermore, regarding the largest groups observed in days when NESO were reported, we show the uncorrected areas of these groups were below 200 millionths of solar disc (msd hereafter) in 3.2 % of total cases while it is 12.9 % for areas between 200 and 499 msd. Thus, NESO records do not imply high solar activity and big sunspot groups necessarily. Therefore, these results contradict the interpretations of recent works that, using the same NESO set, suggest the solar activity level during the Maunder Minimum is still an open question. Although the occurrence of solar irradiance variations induced by magnetic surface features (e.g., sunspots, faculae, magnetic network) is generally accepted, the existence of intrinsic luminosity changes due to the internal magnetic fields is still controversial. This additional contribution is expected to be accompanied by radius variations, and to be potentially significant for the climate of the Earth. We aim to constrain theoretically the radius and luminosity variations of the Sun that are due to the effect of the variable magnetic fields in its interior associated with the dynamo cycle. We have extended a one-dimensional stellar evolution code to include several effects of the magnetic fields on the interior structure. We investigate different magnetic configurations, based on both observational constraints and on the output of state-of-the-art mean field dynamo models. We explore both step-like and simply periodic time dependences of the magnetic field peak strength. We find that the luminosity and radius variations are in anti-phase and in phase, respectively, with the magnetic field strength. For peak magnetic field strengths of the order of tens of kilogauss, luminosity variations ranging between 10^{-6} and 10^{-3} (in modulus) and radius variations between 10^{-6} and 10^{-5} are obtained. Modest but significant radius variations (up to 10^{-5} in relative terms) are obtained for magnetic fields of realistic strength and geometry, providing a potentially observable signature of the intrinsic variations. Context. Solar dynamo models of Babcock-Leighton type typically assume the rise of magnetic flux tubes to be instantaneous. Solutions with high-magnetic-diffusivity have too short periods and a wrong migration of their active belts. Only the low-diffusivity regime with advective meridional flows is usually considered. Aims. In the present paper we discuss these assumptions and applied a time delay in the source term of the azimuthally averaged induction equation. This delay is set to be the rise time of magnetic flux tubes which supposedly form at the tachocline. We study the effect of the delay, which adds to the spacial non-locality a non-linear temporal one, in the advective but particularly in the diffusive regime. Methods. Fournier et al. (2017) obtained the rise time according to stellar parameters such as rotation, and the magnetic field strength at the bottom of the convection zone. These results allowed us to constrain the delay in the mean-field model used in a parameter study. Results. We identify an unknown family of solutions. These solutions self-quench, and exhibit longer periods than their non-delayed counterparts. Additionally, we demonstrate that the non-linear delay is responsible for the recover of the equatorward migration of the active belts at high turbulent diffusivities. Conclusions. By introducing a non-linear temporal non-locality (the delay) in a Babcock-Leighton dynamo model, we could obtain solutions quantitatively comparable to the solar butterfly diagram in the diffusion-dominated regime., Comment: 11 pages, 10 Figures

We present reconstructed sunspot positions based on observations reported in letters between Gottfried Kirch and other contemporary astronomers from AD 1680 to 1709, i.e. in the last decades of the Maunder Minimum. The letters were compiled and edited by Herbst (2006). The letters (and observations) from Kirch are mostly by Gottfried Kirch, but some also by his 2nd wife Maria M. Kirch (married 1692) and their son Christfried Kirch (born 1694). Using excerpts from the letters, some with drawings, we found some 35 sunspot groups (often for several days in a row or with interruptions) by Kirch and/or his letter partners (in three cases, only the month is given: 1704 Jan, Feb, 1707 Mar, otherwise always the exact dates) - usually one group at a time. We also found 17 explicit spotless days, several of them new (previously without any known observations). We could constrain the heliographic latitude by Bayesian inference for 19 sunspot groups - five of them completely new (one group 1680 May 20-22 from Kirch and Ihle, one to two groups 1680 Jun 15-23 for Kirch, one group 1684 May 6 from Ihle, and one group 1688 Dec 14-15 from Kirch), while the others mostly agree (within 2sigma) with previously published values for those dates by others. With these data, we then amend the butterfly diagram for the Maunder Minimum. By comparison of our data with the sunspot group catalog in Hoyt & Schatten (1998), we noticed a number of discrepancies, e.g. that dates for British observers in the Maunder Minimum (Flamsteed, Caswell, Derham, Stannyan, Gray, and Sharp) as listed in Hoyt & Schatten (1998) are their original Julian dates, not converted to the Gregorian calendar (10-11 day offset in Hoyt & Schatten). Most of these modifications also apply to the modified sunspot group catalog in Vaquero et al. (2016). We present and analyse the sunspot observations performed by Franz I. C. Hallaschka in 1814 and 1816. These solar observations were carried out during the so-called Dalton minimum, around the maximum phase of the Solar Cycle 6. These records are very valuable because they allow us to complete observational gaps in the collection of sunspot group numbers, improving its coverage for this epoch. We have analysed and compared the observations made by Hallaschka with the records made by other contemporary observers. Unfortunately, the analysis of the sunspot areas and positions showed that they are too inaccurate for scientific use. But, we conclude that sunspot counts made by Hallaschka are similar to those made by other astronomers of that time. We aim to investigate the nature and occurrence characteristics of grand solar minimum and maximum periods, which are observed in the solar proxy records such as 10Be and 14C, using a fully non-linear Babcock-Leighton type flux-transport dynamo including momentum and entropy equations. The differential rotation and meridional circulation are generated from the effect of turbulent Reynolds stress and are subjected to back-reaction from the magnetic field. To generate grand minimum and maximum-like periods in our simulations, we used random fluctuations in the angular momentum transport process, namely the Lambda-mechanism, and in the Babcock-Leighton mechanism. To characterise the nature and occurrences of the identified grand minima and maxima in our simulations, we used the waiting time distribution analyses, which reflects whether the underlying distribution arises from a random or a memory-bearing process. The results show that, in majority of the cases, the distributions of grand minima and maxima reveal that the nature of these events originates from memoryless processes. We also found that in our simulations the meridional circulation speed tends to be smaller during grand maximum, while it is faster during grand minimum periods. The radial differential rotation tend to be larger during grand maxima, while it is smaller during grand minima. We describe a revised collection of the number of sunspot groups from 1610 to the present. This new collection is based on the work of Hoyt and Schatten (Solar Phys. 179, 189, 1998). The main changes are the elimination of a considerable number of observations during the Maunder Minimum (hereafter, MM) and the inclusion of several long series of observations. Numerous minor changes are also described. Moreover, we have calculated the active-day percentage during the MM from this new collection as a reliable index of the solar activity. Thus, the level of solar activity obtained in this work is greater than the level obtained using the original Hoyt and Schatten data, although it remains compatible with a grand minimum of solar activity. Digital images of the observations printed in the books "Rosa Ursina sive solis" and "Prodromus pro sole mobili" by Christoph Scheiner as well as the drawings from Scheiner's letters to Marcus Welser are analysed in order to obtain information on positions and sizes of sunspots that appeared before the Maunder minimum. In most cases, the given orientation of the ecliptic is used to set up the heliographic coordinate system for the drawings. Positions and sizes are measured manually on the screen. Very early drawings have no indication of their orientation. A rotational matching using common spots of adjacent days is used in some cases, while in other cases, the assumption of images being aligned with a zenith-horizon coordinate system appeared to be the most probable. In total, 8167 sunspots were measured. A distribution of sunspot latitudes versus time (butterfly diagram) is obtained for Scheiner's observations. The observations of 1611 are very inaccurate, the drawings of 1612 have at least an indication of their orientation, while the remaining part of the spot positions from 1618-1631 have good to very good accuracy. We also computed 697 tilt angles of apparently bipolar sunspot groups observed in the period 1618-1631. We find that the average tilt angle of nearly 4 degrees is not significantly different from 20th-century values.

Sunspot positions from various historical sets of solar drawings are analysed with respect to the tilt angles of bipolar sunspot groups. Data by Scheiner, Hevelius, Staudacher, Zucconi, Schwabe, and Spoerer deliver a series of average tilt angles spanning a period of 270 years, additional to previously found values for 20th-century data obtained by other authors. We find that the average tilt angles before the Maunder minimum were not significantly different from the modern values. However, the average tilt angles of a period 50 years after the Maunder minimum, namely for cycles 0 and 1, were much lower and near zero. The normal tilt angles before the Maunder minimum suggest that it was not abnormally low tilt angles which drove the solar cycle into a grand minimum., Comment: accepted by Advances in Space Research

Context. Using asteroseismic techniques, it has recently become possible to probe the internal rotation profile of low-mass (~1.1-1.5 Msun) subgiant and red giant stars. Under the assumption of local angular momentum conservation, the core contraction and envelope expansion occurring at the end of the main sequence would result in a much larger internal differential rotation than observed. This suggests that angular momentum redistribution must be taking place in the interior of these stars. Aims. We investigate the physical nature of the angular momentum redistribution mechanisms operating in stellar interiors by constraining the efficiency of post-main sequence rotational coupling. Methods. We model the rotational evolution of a 1.25 Msun star using the Yale Rotational stellar Evolution Code. Our models take into account the magnetic wind braking occurring at the surface of the star and the angular momentum transport in the interior, with an efficiency dependent on the degree of internal differential rotation. Results. We find that models including a dependence of the angular momentum transport efficiency on the radial rotational shear reproduce very well the observations. The best fit of the data is obtained with an angular momentum transport coefficient scaling with the ratio of the rotation rate of the radiative interior over that of the convective envelope of the star as a power law of exponent ~3. This scaling is consistent with the predictions of recent numerical simulations of the Azimuthal Magneto-Rotational Instability. Conclusions. We show that an angular momentum transport process whose efficiency varies during the stellar evolution through a dependence on the level of internal differential rotation is required to explain the observed post-main sequence rotational evolution of low-mass stars., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures; accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Extending the knowledge about the properties of solar cycles into the past is essential for understanding the solar dynamo. This paper aims at estimating areas of sunspots observed by Schwabe in 1825-1867 and at calculating the tilt angles of sunspot groups. The sunspot sizes in Schwabe's drawings are not to scale and need to be converted into physical sunspot areas. We employed a statistical approach assuming that the area distribution of sunspots was the same in the 19th century as it was in the 20th century. Umbral areas for about 130,000 sunspots observed by Schwabe were obtained, as well as the tilt angles of sunspot groups assuming them to be bipolar. There is, of course, no polarity information in the observations. The annually averaged sunspot areas correlate reasonably with sunspot number. We derived an average tilt angle by attempting to exclude unipolar groups with a minimum separation of the two alleged polarities and an outlier rejection method which follows the evolution of each group and detects the moment it turns unipolar at its decay. As a result, the tilt angles, although displaying considerable scatter, place the leading polarity on average 5.85+-0.25 closer to the equator, in good agreement with tilt angles obtained from 20th-century data sets. Sources of uncertainties in the tilt angle determination are discussed and need to be addressed whenever different data sets are combined. Surface differential rotation (DR) is one major ingredient of the magnetic field generation process in the Sun and likely in other stars. The term solar-like differential rotation describes the observation that solar equatorial regions rotate faster than polar ones. The opposite effect of polar regions rotating faster than equatorial ones (termed as antisolar DR) has only been observed in a few stars, although there is evidence from theoretical dynamo models. We present a new method to detect the sign of DR (i.e. solar-like or antisolar DR) by analyzing long-term high-precision light curves with the Lomb-Scargle periodogram.We compute the Lomb-Scargle periodogram and identify a set of significant periods $P_k$, which we associate with active regions located at different latitudes on the the stellar surface. If detectable, the first harmonics ($P_k'$) of these periods were identified to compute their peak-height-ratios $r_k:=h(P_k')/h(P_k)$. Spots rotating at lower latitudes generate less sine-shaped light curves, which requires additional power in the harmonics, and results in larger ratios $r_k$. Comparing different ratios $r_k$ and the associated periods $P_k$ yields information about the spot latitudes, and reveals the sign of DR. We tested our method on different sets of synthetic light curves all exhibiting solar-like DR. The number of cases where our method detects antisolar DR is the false-positive rate of our method. Depending on the set of light curves, the noise level, the required minimum peak separation, and the presence or absence of spot evolution, our method fails to detect the correct sign in at most 20%. We applied our method to 50 Kepler G stars and found 21-34 stars with solar-like DR and 5-10 stars with antisolar DR, depending on the minimum peak separation., Comment: 8 pages, 5 Figures, 3 Tables. The (Zeeman-)Doppler imaging studies of solar-type stars very often reveal large high-latitude spots. This also includes F stars that possess relatively shallow convection zones, indicating that the dynamo operating in these stars differs from the solar dynamo. We aim to determine whether mean-field dynamo models of late-F type dwarf stars can reproduce the surface features recovered in Doppler maps. In particular, we wish to test whether the models can reproduce the high-latitude spots observed on some F dwarfs. The photometric inversions and the surface temperature maps of AF Lep were obtained using the Occamian-approach inversion technique. Low signal-to-noise spectroscopic data were improved by applying the least-squares deconvolution method. The locations of strong magnetic flux in the stellar tachocline as well as the surface fields obtained from mean-field dynamo solutions were compared with the observed surface temperature maps. The photometric record of AF Lep reveals both long- and short-term variability. However, the current data set is too short for cycle-length estimates. From the photometry, we have determined the rotation period of the star to be 0.9660+-0.0023 days. The surface temperature maps show a dominant, but evolving, high-latitude (around +65 degrees) spot. Detailed study of the photometry reveals that sometimes the spot coverage varies only marginally over a long time, and at other times it varies rapidly. Of a suite of dynamo models, the model with a radiative interior rotating as fast as the convection zone at the equator delivered the highest compatibility with the obtained Doppler images., Comment: accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

The B fields in OB stars (BOB) survey is an ESO large programme collecting spectropolarimetric observations for a large number of early-type stars in order to study the occurrence rate, properties, and ultimately the origin of magnetic fields in massive stars. As of July 2014, a total of 98 objects were observed over 20 nights with FORS2 and HARPSpol. Our preliminary results indicate that the fraction of magnetic OB stars with an organised, detectable field is low. This conclusion, now independently reached by two different surveys, has profound implications for any theoretical model attempting to explain the field formation in these objects. The record of solar activity is reviewed here with emphasis on peculiarities. Since sunspot positions tell us a lot more about the solar dynamo than the various global sunspot numbers, we first focus on the records of telescopic observations of sunspots leading to positional information. Then we turn to the proxy record from cosmogenic isotope abundances, which shows recurrent grand minima over the last 9500 years. The apparent distinction between episodes of strong modulation, and intervening episodes with milder modulation and weaker overall activity, hints at the solar dynamo following a variety of solutions, with different symmetries, over the course of millennia., Comment: accepted for Space Science Reviews

Aims. Sunspot number is a benchmark series in many studies, but may still contain inhomogeneities and inconsistencies. In particular, an essential discrepancy exists between the two main sunspot number series, Wolf (WSN) and group (GSN) sunspot numbers, before 1848. The source of this discrepancy has so far remained unresolved. However, the recently digitized series of solar observations in 1825-1867 by Samuel Heinrich Schwabe, who was the primary observer of the WSN before 1848, makes such an assessment possible. Methods. We construct sunspot series, similar to WSN and GSN, but using only Schwabe's data. These series, called WSN-S and GSN-S, respectively, were compared with the original WSN and GSN series for the period 1835-1867 to look for possible inhomogeneities. Results. We show that: (1) The GSN series is homogeneous and consistent with the Schwabe data throughout the entire studied period; (2) The WSN series decreases by roughly ~20% around 1848 caused by the change of the primary observer from Schwabe to Wolf and an inappropriate individual correction factor used for Schwabe in the WSN; (3) This implies a major inhomogeneity in the WSN, which needs to be corrected by reducing its values by 20% before 1848; (4) The corrected WSN series is in good agreement with the GSN series. Samuel Heinrich Schwabe made 8486 drawings of the solar disk with sunspots in the period from November 5, 1825 to December 29, 1867. We have measured sunspot sizes and heliographic positions on digitized images of these drawings. A total of about 135,000 measurements of individual sunspots are available in a data base. Positions are accurate to about 5% of the solar radius or to about three degrees in heliographic coordinates in the solar disk center. Sizes were given in 12 classes as estimated visually with circular cursor shapes on the screen. Most of the drawings show a coordinate grid aligned with the celestial coordinate system. A subset of 1168 drawings have no indication of their orientation. We have used a Bayesian estimator to infer the orientations of the drawings as well as the average heliographic spot positions from a chain of drawings of several days, using the rotation profile of the present Sun. The frequent presence of weak magnetic fields on the surface of spotted late-B stars with HgMn peculiarity in binary systems has been controversial during the two last decades. We re-analyse available spectropolarimetric material by applying the moment technique on spectral lines of inhomogeneously distributed elements separately. Furthermore, we present new determinations of the mean longitudinal magnetic field for the HgMn star HD65949 and the hotter analog of HgMn stars, the PGa star HD19400, using FORS2 installed at the VLT. We also give new measurements of the eclipsing system AR Aur with a primary star of HgMn peculiarity which were obtained with the SOFIN spectropolarimeter installed at the Nordic Optical Telescope. We downloaded from the ESO archive the publically available HARPS spectra for eight HgMn stars and one normal and one superficially normal B-type star obtained in 2010. The application of the moment technique to the HARPS and SOFIN spectra allowed us to study the presence of the longitudinal magnetic field, the crossover effect, and quadratic magnetic fields. Results for the HgMn star HD65949 and the PGa star HD19400 are based on a linear regression analysis of low-resolution spectra obtained with FORS2 in spectropolarimetric mode. Our measurements of the magnetic field with the moment technique using spectral lines of several elements separately reveal the presence of a weak longitudinal magnetic field, a quadratic magnetic field, and the crossover effect on the surface of several HgMn stars as well as normal and superficially normal B-type stars. Furthermore, our analysis suggests the existence of intriguing correlations between the strength of the magnetic field, abundance anomalies, and binary properties., Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures, 12 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

The sunspot drawings of Johann Staudacher of 1749--1799 were used to determine the solar differential rotation in that period. These drawings of the full disk lack any indication of their orientation. We used a Bayesian estimator to obtain the position angles of the drawings, the corresponding heliographic spot positions, a time offset between the drawings and the differential rotation parameter \delta\Omega, assuming the equatorial rotation period is the same as today. The drawings are grouped in pairs, and the resulting marginal distributions for \delta\Omega were multiplied. We obtain \delta\Omega=-0.048 \pm 0.025 d^-1 (-2.75^o/d) for the entire period. There is no significant difference to the value of the present Sun. We find an (insignificant) indication for a change of \delta\Omega throughout the observing period from strong differential rotation, \delta\Omega\approx -0.07 d^-1, to weaker differential rotation, \delta\Omega\approx-0.04 d^-1., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, accepted for Astronomy and Astrophysics

We investigate the stability of the Hall-MHD system and determine its importance for neutron stars at their birth, when they still consist of differentially rotating plasma permeated by extremely strong magnetic fields. We solve the linearised Hall-MHD equations in a spherical shell threaded by a homogeneous magnetic field. With the fluid/flow coupling and the Hall effect included, the magnetorotational instability and the Hall effect are both acting together. Results differ for magnetic fields aligned with the rotation axis and anti-parallel magnetic fields. For a positive alignment of the magnetic field the instability grows on a rotational time-scale for any sufficiently large magnetic Reynolds number. Even the magnetic fields which are stable against the MRI due to the magnetic diffusion are now susceptible to the shear-Hall instability. In contrast, the negative alignment places strong restrictions on the growth and the magnitude of the fields, hindering the effectiveness of the Hall-MRI. While non-axisymmetric modes of the MRI can be suppressed by strong enough rotation, there is no such restriction when the Hall effect is present. The discovery of exotic abundances, chemical inhomogeneities, and weak magnetic fields on the surface of late B-type primaries in spectroscopic binaries has important implications not only for our understanding of the formation mechanisms of stars with Hg and Mn peculiarities themselves, but also for the general understanding of B-type star formation in binary systems. The origin of the abundance anomalies observed in late B-type stars with HgMn peculiarity is still poorly understood. The connection between HgMn peculiarity and membership in binary and multiple systems is supported by our observations during the last decade. The important result achieved in our studies of a large sample of HgMn stars is the finding that most HgMn stars exhibit spectral variability of various chemical elements, proving that the presence of an inhomogeneous distribution on the surface of these stars is a rather common characteristic and not a rare phenomenon. Further, in the studied systems, we found that all components are chemically peculiar with different abundance patterns. Generally, He and Si variable Bp stars possess large-scale organised magnetic fields that in many cases appear to occur essentially in the form of a single large dipole located close to the centre of the star. The presence of magnetic fields in the atmospheres of HgMn stars has been demonstrated in several studies. A long time-series of sunspot observations is preserved from Samuel Heinrich Schwabe who made notes and drawings of sunspots from 1825-1867. Schwabe's observing records are preserved in the manuscript archives of the Royal Astronomical Society, London. The drawings have now been digitized for future measurements of sunspot positions and sizes. The present work gives an inventory and evaluation of the images obtained from the log books of Schwabe. The total number of full-disk drawings of the sun with spots is 8486, the number of additional verbal reports on sunspots is 3699. Ap star magnetism is often attributed to fossil magnetic fields which have not changed much since the pre-main-sequence epoch of the stars. Stable magnetic field configurations are known which could persist probably for the entire main-sequence life of the star, but they may not show the complexity and diversity exhibited by the Ap stars observed. We suggest that the Ap star magnetism is not a result of stable configurations, but is the result of an instability based on strong toroidal magnetic fields buried in the stars. The highly nonaxisymmetric remainders of the instability are reminiscent of the diversity of fields seen on Ap stars. The strengths of these remnant magnetic fields is actually between a few per cent up to considerable fractions of the internal toroidal field; this means field strengths of the order of kGauss being compatible with what is observed. The magnetic fields emerge at the surface rather quickly; rough estimates deliver time-scales of the order of a few years. This study is concerned with the early evolution of magnetic fields and differential rotation of intermediate-mass stars which may evolve into Ap stars. We report on simulations of the interplay of differential rotation and magnetic fields, the stability limits and non-linear evolution of such configurations, and the prospects of dynamo action from the unstable cases. The axisymmetric problem delivers a balance between field amplification and back-reaction of the magnetic field on the differential rotation. The non-axisymmetric case involves also the Tayler instability of the amplified toroidal fields. We consider limits for field amplification and apply these to young A stars. Apart from its application to Ap stars, the instability is scrutinized for the fundamental possibility of a dynamo. We are not looking for a dynamo as an explanation for the Ap star phenomenon. The kinetic helicity is concentrated near the tangent cylinder of the inner sphere of the computational domain and is negative in the northern hemisphere. This appears to be a ubiquitous effect not special to the Tayler instability. The latter is actually connected with a positive current helicity in the bulk of the spherical shell giving rise to a small, but non-vanishing alpha-effect in non-linear evolution of the instability., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures, accepted by Mon. We investigate the phase difference of the sunspot cycles in the two hemispheres and compare it with the latitudinal sunspot distribution. If the north-south phase difference exhibits a long-term tendency, it should not be regarded as a stochastic phenomenon. We use datasets of historical sunspot records and drawings made by Staudacher, Hamilton, Gimingham, Carrington, Spouml;rer, and Greenwich observers, as well as the sunspot activity during the Maunder minimum reconstructed by Ribes and Nesme-Ribes. We employ cross-recurrence plots to analyse north-south phase differences. We show that during the last 300 years, the persistence of phase-leading in one of the hemispheres exhibits a secular variation. Changes from one hemisphere to the other leading in phase were registered near 1928 and 1968 as well as two historical ones near 1783 and 1875. A long-term anticorrelation between the hemispheric phase differences in the sunspot cycles and the latitudinal distribution of sunspots was traced since 1750., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We obtained high-resolution, high signal-to-noise UVES and a few lower quality HARPS spectra revealing the presence of resolved magnetically split lines. HD101412 is the first Herbig Ae star for which the rotational Doppler effect was found to be small in comparison to the magnetic splitting. The measured mean magnetic field modulus varies from 2.5 to 3.5kG, while the mean quadratic field was found to vary in the range of 3.5 to 4.8kG. To determine the period of variations, we used radial velocity, equivalent width, line width, and line asymmetry measurements of variable spectral lines of several elements, as well as magnetic field measurements. The most pronounced variability was detected for spectral lines of He I and the iron peak elements, whereas the spectral lines of CNO elements are only slightly variable. From spectral variations and magnetic field measurements we derived a potential rotation period P_rot=13.86d, which has to be proven in future studies with a larger number of observations. It is the first time that the presence of element spots is detected on the surface of a Herbig Ae/Be star. Our previous study of Herbig Ae stars revealed a trend towards stronger magnetic fields for younger Herbig Ae stars, confirmed by statistical tests. This is in contrast to a few other (non-statistical) studies claiming that magnetic Herbig Ae stars are progenitors of the magnetic Ap stars. New developments in MHD theory show that the measured magnetic field strengths are compatible with a current-driven instability of toroidal fields generated by differential rotation in the stellar interior. A variety of magnetohydrodynamic mechanisms that may play a role in magnetic, chemically peculiar (mCP) stars is reviewed. These involve dynamo mechanisms in laminar flows as well as turbulent environments, and magnetic instabilities of poloidal and toroidal fields as well as combinations of the two. While the proto-stellar phase makes the survival of primordial fields difficult, the variety of magnetic field configurations on mCP stars may be an indication for that they are instability remnants, but there is no process which is clearly superior in explaining the strong fields., Comment: Contribution presented at the CP/AP Workshop, Vienna, Austria in September 2007

The three-dimensional, hydrodynamic stability of the solar tachocline is investigated based on a rotation profile as a function of both latitude and radius. By varying the amplitude of the latitudinal differential rotation, we find linear stability limits at various Reynolds numbers by numerical computations. We repeated the computations with different latitudinal and radial dependences of the angular velocity. The stability limits are all higher than those previously found from two-dimensional approximations and higher than the shear expected in the Sun. There are successful approaches to explain the formation of the tachocline by a poloidal magnetic field in the solar core. We present here the first MHD simulations of the solar tachocline which self-consistently include the meridional circulation. We show that the meridional flow significantly changes the shape and the characteristics of the tachocline. We find that after the inclusion of the meridional circulation, a tachocline can be formed even when the poloidal field lines are crossing the boundary between the radiative zone and the convection zone. We also discuss the effects of the magnetic Prandtl number as well as of the magnetic Reynolds number on the properties of the tachocline. The tachocline is much thinner for higher magnetic Reynolds numbers and/or lower magnetic Prandtl numbers. We expect that a poloidal magnetic seed field of around 1 G will be sufficient to produce the tachocline of the Sun. However, the model requires the initial magnetic field to be in a narrow range for satisfying tachocline solutions. The hydrodynamic stability of accretion disks is considered. The particular question is whether the combined action of a (stable) vertical density stratification and a (stable) radial differential rotation gives rise to a new instability for nonaxisymmetric modes of disturbances. The existence of such an instability is not suggested by the well-known Solberg-Hoiland criterion. It is also not suggested by a local analysis for disturbances in general stratifications of entropy and angular momentum which is presented in our Section 2 confirming the results of the Solberg-Hoiland criterion also for nonaxisymmetric modes within the frame of ideal hydrodynamics but only in the frame of a short-wave approximation for small m. As a necessary condition for stability we find that only conservative external forces are allowed to influence the stable disk. As magnetic forces are never conservative, linear disk instabilities should only exist in the magnetohydrodynamical regime which indeed contains the magnetorotational instability as a much-promising candidate. To overcome some of the used approximations in a numerical approach,the equations of the compressible adiabatic hydrodynamics are integrated imposing initial nonaxisymmetric velocity perturbations with m=1 to m=200. Only solutions with decaying kinetic energy are found. The possibility of non-helical large scale dynamo action is investigated using three-dimensional simulations of global accretion discs as well as idealized local simulations without rotation and only shear. Particular emphasis is placed on a certain correlation between vorticity and azimuthal velocity gradient which has been predicted to drive large scale dynamo action, independent of the presence or absence of kinetic helicity. In the global disc simulations two types of behaviours are found: those which do show this type of velocity correlation and those which do not. The former ones are typically also the cases where the resistivity is larger. The latter ones show signs typical of dynamo action based on the usual helicity effect. In the idealized simulations without rotation and just shear the above correlation is found to be particularly strong. In both cases there is, as expected, a systematic flux of magnetic helicity through the midplane. However, very little helicity flux leaves the domain through the top and bottom boundaries. The idealized simulations reveal that much of this systematic flux comes from the rotational component of the helicity flux and does not contribute to its divergence., Comment: 14 pages, 17 figures, 5 tables, submitted to Astron. & Astrophys

We perform global three-dimensional simulations of accretion disks integrating the compressible, non-viscous, but diffusive MHD equations. The disk is supposed to be isothermal. We make use of the ZEUS-3D code integrating the MHD equations and added magnetic diffusivity. We measure the efficiency of the angular-momentum transport. Various model simulations delivered transport parameters of alpha_SS=0.01 to 0.05 which are consistent with several local numerical investigations. Two of the models reach a highly turbulent state at which alpha_SS is of the order of 0.1. After a certain stage of saturating of the turbulence, Reynolds stress is found to be negative (inward transport) in many of the models, whereas Maxwell stresses dominate and deliver a positive (outward) total transport. Several of the models yield strongly fluctuating Reynolds stresses, while Maxwell stresses are smooth and always transport outwards. Dynamo action is found in the accretion disk simulations. A positive dynamo-alpha is indicated in the northern hemisphere of the most prominent run, coming along with negative kinetic and current helicities (all having the opposite sign on the southern side). The dipolar structure of the magnetic field is maintained throughout the simulations, although indication for a decay of antisymmetry is found. The simulations covered relatively thick disks, and results of thin-disk dynamo models showing quadrupolar fields may not be compatible with the results presented here., Comment: 13 pages, LaTeX, submitted to A&A
