Abstract

Text detection enables us to extract rich information from images. In this paper, we focus on how to generate bounding boxes that are appropriate to grasp text areas on books to help implement automatic text detection. We attempt not to improve a learning-based model by training it with an enough amount of data in the target domain but to leverage it, which has been already trained with another domain data. We develop algorithms that construct the bounding boxes by improving and leveraging the results of a learning-based method. Our algorithms can utilize different learning-based approaches to detect scene texts. Experimental evaluations demonstrate that our algorithms work well in various situations where books are roughly placed.

11. An adaptive parallel processing strategy in complex event processing systems over data streams

Abstract

Efficient matching of incoming events of data streams to persistent queries is fundamental to event stream processing systems. These applications require dealing with high volume and continuous data streams with fast processing time on distributed complex event processing (CEP) systems. Therefore, a well-managed parallel processing technique is needed for improving the performance of the system. However, the specific properties of pattern operators in the CEP systems increase the difficulties of the parallel processing problem. To address these issues, a parallelization model and an adaptive parallel processing strategy are proposed for the complex event processing by introducing a histogram, and utilizing the probability and queue theory. The proposed strategy can estimate the optimal event splitting policy, which can suit the most recent workloads conditions such that the selected policy has the least expected waiting time for further processing the arriving events. The proposed strategy can keep the CEP system running fast under the variation of the time window sizes of operators and input rates of streams. Abstract

Text augmentation plays an important role in enhancing the generalizability of language models. However, traditional methods often overlook the unique roles that individual words play in conveying meaning in text and imbalance class distribution, thereby risking suboptimal performance and compromising the model's generalizability. This limitation motivated us to develop a novel technique called Text Augmentation with Word Contributions (TAWC). Our approach tackles this problem in two core steps: Firstly, it employs analytical correlation and semantic similarity metrics to discern the relationships between words and their associated aspect polarities. Secondly, it tailors distinct augmentation strategies to individual words based on their identified functional contributions in the text. Extensive experiments on two aspect-based sentiment analysis datasets demonstrate that the proposed TAWC model significantly improves the classification performances of popular language models, achieving gains of up to 4% compared with the case of data without augmentation, thereby setting a new standard in the field of text augmentation. 33. Anomaly detection against mimicry attacks based on time decay modelling

Abstract

Because cyberattackers attempt to cheat anomaly detection systems, it is required to make an anomaly detection system robust against such attempts. We focus on mimicry attacks and propose a system to detect such attacks in this paper. Mimicry attacks make use of ordinary operations in order not to be detected. We take account of time decay in modelling operations to give lower priorities to preceding operations, thereby enabling us to detect mimicry attacks. We empirically evaluate our proposal with varying time decay rate for demonstrating that our proposal can detect mimicry attacks, which could not be detected by a state-of-the-art anomaly detection approach.
