Esta investigación tiene como objetivo principal determinar cuál es la relación que existe entre las variables de insatisfacción corporal y niveles de autoestima en estudiantes que pertenezcan a algún programa de Comunicación Social y Periodismo de la ciudad de Villavicencio-Meta. La metodología implementada para el desarrollo de esta investigación fue de enfoque Cuantitativo con un diseño Transversal Descriptivo-Correlacional y un tipo de muestreo no probabilístico por conveniencia o de tipo intencional; debido a las características de la población y el acceso a ella. Esta investigación contó con la participación total de 120 estudiantes pertenecientes a este programa. Los instrumentos que se usaron dentro de este estudio fueron: El Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) y El Inventario de Autoestima de Coopersmith. Finalmente, para el análisis de los resultados se utilizó el programa Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), en el cual se halló que existe una correlación inversamente proporcional; lo cual indica que a mayores niveles de insatisfacción corporal menores niveles de autoestima, frente a los objetivos específicos se encontró que la mayoría de estudiantes presentan niveles promedio de insatisfacción corporal y niveles de autoestima altos en las diferentes dimensiones. En cuanto a las conclusiones, se halló que los estudiantes de comunicación social y periodismo no se encuentran influenciados por la elección de su carrera, ni por la presión social en el momento de garantizar su éxito laboral. De igual forma se concluyó que las mujeres presentan mayores niveles de insatisfacción corporal y menores niveles de autoestima en comparación del sexo masculino. This research has objective of determinate the relationship between the variables of body dissatisfaction and self-esteem levels in students who belong to a Social Communication and Journalism program in the city of Villavicencio-Meta. The methodology implemented for the development of this research was of Quantitative approach with a Transversal Descriptive-Correlational design and a type of non-probabilistic sampling by convenience or intentional type; due to the characteristics of the population and the access to it. This research counted with the total participation of 120 students belonging to this program. The instruments used in this study were the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) and the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory. Finally, for the analysis of the results, the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) program was used, in which it was found that there is an inversely proportional correlation; which indicates that the higher the levels of body dissatisfaction, the lower the levels of self-esteem, in relation to the specific objectives, it was found that most students present average levels of body dissatisfaction and high levels of self-esteem in the different dimensions. As for the conclusions, it was found that the students of social communication and journalism are not influenced by the choice of their career, nor by social pressure at the moment of guaranteeing their labor success. Sex is a modulator of health that has been historically overlooked in biomedical research. Recognizing this knowledge gap, funding agencies now mandate the inclusion of sex as a biological variable with the goal of stimulating efforts to illuminate the molecular underpinnings of sex biases in health and disease. DNA methylation (DNAm) is a strong molecular candidate for mediating such sex biases; however, a robust and well characterized annotation of sex differences in DNAm is yet to emerge. Beginning with a large (n = 3795) dataset of DNAm profiles from normative adult whole blood samples, we identified, validated and characterized autosomal sex-associated co-methylated genomic regions (sCMRs). Strikingly, sCMRs showed consistent sex differences in DNAm over the life course and a subset were also consistent across cell, tissue and cancer types. sCMRs included sites with known sex differences in DNAm and links to health conditions with sex biased effects. The robustness of sCMRs enabled the generation of an autosomal DNAm-based predictor of sex with 96% accuracy. Testing this tool on blood DNAm profiles from individuals with sex chromosome aneuploidies (Klinefelter [47,XXY], Turner [45,X] and 47,XXX syndrome) revealed an intimate relationship between sex chromosomes and sex-biased autosomal DNAm.

BackgroundEpidemiological data show that traffic-related air pollution contributes to the increasing prevalence and severity of asthma. DNA methylation (DNAm) changes may elucidate adverse health effects of environmental exposures.ObjectivesWe sought to assess the effects of allergen and diesel exhaust (DE) exposures on global DNAm and its regulation enzymes in human airway epithelium.MethodsA total of 11 participants, including 7 with and 4 without airway hyperresponsiveness, were recruited for a randomized, double-blind crossover study. Each participant had 3 exposures: filtered air + saline, filtered air + allergen, and DE + allergen. Forty-eight hours postexposure, endobronchial biopsies and bronchoalveolar lavages were collected. Levels of DNA methyltransferases (DNMTs) and ten-eleven translocation (TET) enzymes, 5-methylcytosine, and 5-hydroxymethylcytosine were determined by immunohistochemistry. Cytokines and chemokines in bronchoalveolar lavages were measured by electrochemiluminescence multiplex assays.ResultsPredominant DNMT (the most abundant among DNMT1, DNMT3A, and DNMT3B) and predominant TET (the most abundant among TET1, TET2, and TET3) were participant-dependent. 5-Methylcytosine and its regulation enzymes differed between participants with and without airway hyperresponsiveness at baseline (filtered air + saline) and in response to allergen challenge (regardless of DE exposure). Predominant DNMT and predominant TET correlated with lung function. Allergen challenge effect on IL-8 in bronchoalveolar lavages was modified by TET2 baseline levels in the epithelium.ConclusionsResponse to allergen challenge is associated with key DNAm regulation enzymes. This relationship is generally unaltered by DE coexposure but is rather dependent on airway hyperresponsiveness status. These enzymes therefore warranted further inquiry regarding their potential in diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of asthma.

We draw on the field of implicit theories and the job crafting literature to explore technology acceptance in a novel manner. The study used questionnaire data collected at two time points from 94 employees in a Norwegian firm where a new technology was being implemented. The results of our first model indicate that there is a relationship between fixed digital mindset and the extent to which employees avoid technology, and this can be influenced by perceptions of subjective norms. Concerning our second model, the hypothesized moderated mediation relating fixed digital mindset to technology approach was not supported. This indicated that training initiative frequency and perceived usefulness did not mediate the relationship, even though digital selfefficacy was found to partially moderate the relationship between having a fixed digital mindset and training initiative frequency. Desde el año 1991, la Universidad viene desarrollando estrategias encaminadas a atender a los estudiantes en aspectos complementarios a su formación profesional, pretendiendo con esto aportar en los procesos de acompañamiento a los estudiantes para favorecer el éxito académico y la adaptación a la vida universitaria. Dichos procesos hoy se configuran desde la política de permanencia y graduación y desde el proyecto de formación integral, definido en su direccionamiento estratégico, cuyo eje central es el diseño que cada estudiante hace de su proyecto personal de formación, es decir de su propio recorrido por la universidad, teniendo como horizonte la articulación entre la formación profesional, la personal y la social, acompañado para esto de los integrantes de la comunidad universitaria. En este marco se consolida el programa de permanencia cuyo fin se orienta hacia el acompañamiento al desarrollo de la vida universitaria del estudiante, propiciando su cualificación y promoción académica, la identidad con los valores y principios de la universidad, con miras a garantizar su permanencia y graduación oportuna. Bajo esta intencionalidad, la consejería en la UAM (Universidad Autónoma de Manizales) se configura como el eje central desde donde emerge el proceso de acompañamiento a los estudiantes, en tanto que es a partir de la misma donde se despliegan los soportes que cada estudiante requiere acorde a su particularidad como sujeto, pero siempre orientada a buscar el logro de la autonomía, que permita que el estudiante tome consciencia de sus capacidades y habilidades para construir su próprio conocimiento y para tomar sus propias decisiones, en busqueda de la confianza en sí mismo y de su independencia em su proceso de formación. El consejero es mediador y soporte necesario para facilitar la adaptación del estudiante a la vida universitaria, es en gran medida un acompañante para el estudiante en un escenario nuevo, es facilitador del cambio, y se fundamenta en la relación profesor-estudiante que se traduce en mayor orientación para el mejor desarrollo académico y ético profesional del estudiante. Bajo esta mirada, la presente ponencia tiene como objetivo presentar la experiencia del programa de consejería en la UAM, su razón de ser en el marco de la misión institucional, su ruta de trabajo, sus alcances, pero también sus retos.

El ingreso a la educación superior se constituye en un momento clave para la permanencia del estudiante en la institución. Un profundo conocimiento de sus características, influye positivamente en el reconocimiento de factores de riesgo que pueden afectar su proceso de adaptación y éxito académico. Sin embargo, la experiencia ha mostrado que no sólo es importante conocer qué tipo de estudiante ingresa a la universidad, sino también establecer un modelo de trabajo claro que permita articular diferentes instancias y acciones, para actuar en forma temprana y oportuna, orientadas a atender y prevenir posibles dificultades y obstáculos en el proceso del estudiante. La ponencia que se presenta a continuación tiene como objetivo dar a conocer el proceso a través del cual se orientan acciones tendientes a favorecer la adaptación del estudiante a la vida universitaria y a su logro académico, reconociendo para ello no solo factores de tipo afectivo emotivo que puedan influir, sino también un acercamiento mucho más integral, a través del levantamiento de un perfil situacional, que determina el nivel de riesgo del estudiante al ingreso a la institución, lo que permite definir una alerta temprana para realizar un proceso de intervención oportuna de los factores que pueden afectar la permanencia del estudiante en la UAM. Lo anterior se complementa con un modelo de trabajo que incluye la socialización de los resultados encontrados a diferentes actores de la universidad que acompañarán al estudiante en los primeros semestres académicos y un proceso de seguimiento permanente al desempeño académico del estudiante, sus resultados alcanzados en cada uno de los cortes académicos, así como donde se evalúa el proceso llevado a cabo por el estudiante. Hasta el momento, el desarrollo del proyecto ha permitido alcanzar logros importantes dentro de los cuales se destacan: Levantamiento del perfil situacional de todos los estudiantes al ingreso a la institución; Definición del factor de riesgo de cada estudiante, como insumo para activar el sistema de gestión de riesgo y acciones de acompañamiento; Actuación de forma temprana y oportuna, frente a los factores de riesgo de cada estudiante; Definición del perfil situacional de los grupos, de todos los programas y su análisis con los docentes respectivos, que permite generar estrategias de enseñanza que se ajusten a cada grupo y movilizar los apoyos requeridos en cada caso.

Transcription is the process by which information encoded in the DNA is read by the cell. RNAPII is a key enzyme in this process and it contains a unique and functionally conserved C-terminal domain (CTD) composed of heptapeptide repeats. The CTD plays essential roles in the coordination of transcription events, which is is mediated by its ability to be differentially modified throughout the transcription cycle. As such, a number of CTD modifying enzymes act at different stages on the CTD, including the phosphatase Fcp1, which associates with RNAPII along the length of transcribed genes and plays key roles in transcription elongation and recycling. In addition to the modification status, both CTD sequence and length are important for normal function. This thesis focuses on understanding the role of the RNAPII-CTD and its modifying enzyme, Fcp1, in gene expression and in understanding how the CTD and the process of transcription contribute to genome instability. We found clear evidence that despite their general role in transcription both CTD length and Fcp1 function have gene-specific effects on transcription. In particular, we show that truncation of the CTD results in an increasing number of transcriptional defects. These defects resulted primarily from changes in initiation and were suppressed by loss of a previously reported CTD suppressor, CDK8. Additionally, our work on Fcp1 mutants provides a framework for exploring a general role for Fcp1 in the regulation of transcription factors. Furthermore, we find that truncating the CTD also resulted in altered expression of mobile genetic elements, a previously unreported phenotype. Here, we show that loss of CDK8 was able to suppress the increased expression of retrotransposons, expanding our understanding of retrotransposon regulation in vivo. We also find that this effect is mediated by the transcription factors Ste12 and Tec1 and that loss of either of these can suppress growth and retrotransposon expression defects of CTD truncation mutants. Finally, we report the genome-wide distribution of DNA:RNA hybrids in S. cerevisiae. By comparing this profile to that of mutants in genes encoding RNA or DNA:RNA hybrid processing factors, we show differential effects on DNA:RNA hybrid abundance and localization.

Delaware Bay is a coastal plain estuary located in the east coast of the United States and provides recreation, transportation, fishery and water resources. The physical characteristics of an estuary significantly influence the function and value of these resources. For example increased salt intrusion associated with channel deepening may be a threat to potable water supplies and increase diseases to shelf-fish. It is then relevant to understand these physical characteristics and the processes that govern them. This graduate work focused on some hydrodynamic aspects of Delaware Bay, in particular, the transport of salt, stratification and the role of the cross-channel dynamics. Numerical simulations and observations were the tools employed to develop this work. The Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) was used to set up a model of the bay. The observations consisted of a mooring array in the middle reach of the bay, equipped with ADCPs and CT sensors at different depths. Additionally, four cross-channel tidal surveys were performed in the same location of the mooring array. The results indicate that the net salt transport due to tidal flows ($F7t$) is of the same order of magnitude as the salt transport due to the estuarine exchange flow ($F7e$). Furthermore, $F7t$ is intensified during neap periods, presenting a spring-neap variability that is opposite to previous parameterizations. We concluded that this spring-neap variability is caused by the action of the cross-channel flows on the salinity field that enhances the tidal period variability of salinity ($s7t$) during neap tides, and brings the along-channel velocity and salinity out of quadrature. The lateral flows, acting on the cross-channel salinity gradient, tend to stratify the water column on the flood and destratify the water column during the ebb. This tidal period variability competes, and often overcomes, the along-channel straining. Consequently stratification in Delaware Bay is often enhanced during the flood and reduced during the ebb, contrary to the classic model of tidal straining. This demonstrates that the cross-channel dynamics has an important influence on the salt transport and stratification in this system and may have other important consequences on processes such as sediment transport.
