The objective of this study was to evaluate the genetic effects involved in post-harvest water loss of C. baccatum fruits and to correlate fruit morphological characteristics. Fruits of eight landraces of C. baccatum and their twenty-eight hybrids were evaluated in a randomized, complete block design. Analysis of variance, diallel analysis, phenotypic and genotypic correlation, and path analysis for eight fruit traits were performed. Fruit width, fruit length, dry matter content, and fruit wall thickness were determined by additive gene effects. On the other hand, the non-additive effects played more important role than additive ones, including water loss, cuticle thickness, exocarp thickness, and total soluble solids. The relationship of fruit traits suggested that indirect selection can be carried out from field experiments under different environmental conditions. Overall, genitors 4, 24, 50, and 56 should be selected to form new populations to improve these traits. The Brazilian pepper landraces of C. baccatum species are a source of genetic variability for plant breeders, and the new segregating populations emerging through the crossing of pepper lines with reduced water loss should be developed, opening new ways for conventional breeding.

Intercellular protuberances (IPs) are projections on the cell surface and have been reported for families of ferns, Gymnosperms, and Angiosperms. Data on the type, chemical composition, and distribution of these structures among vascular plants are still scarce. Here, we investigate the occurrence, distribution, type of IPs among species of eight Dennstaedtiaceae genera and verify the taxonomic significance of these protuberances in the family. Rhizomes of 23 species of Dennstaedtiaceae from field and herbaria collections were analyzed by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Histochemical tests were performed to identify the main classes of IPs chemical compounds. Two types of IPs were observed in Dennstaedtiaceae species: strand and filament types. They were observed in the intercellular spaces of the parenchyma in the cortex and pith regions. Overall, protuberances are irregularly shaped, with angustate or spheroidal apices. Their polysaccharide nature and pectic constitution were confirmed by histochemical tests. Concerning Pteridium arachnoideum (Kaulf.) Maxon subsp. arachnoideum, IPs have confirmed phenolic composition. Evidence indicates that IPs in Dennstaedtiaceae originate from the fragmentation of the middle lamella and that they have a structural function as well as protection against pathogens. In lateral-line aerenchyma, the occurrence of filament-type IPs may be related to the larger intercellular spacing in the cortex region, providing greater mechanical resistance. We have expanded the data on the occurrence of IPs in the Dennstaedtiaceae, which appear to be notable characters for the family. Moreover, the data presented herein confirmed the polysaccharide and pectic nature of these structures. However, we were unable to find links between IPs and taxonomy and evolution of the Dennstaedtiaceae. On the other hand, different IPs types were identified between the clades Dennstaedtioideae (strand-type IPs) and Hypolepidoideae (filament-type IPs, with exceptions).

ABSTRACT Calolisianthus speciosus, an endemic species of cerrado and campos rupestres in Brazil, bears colleters in both the leaf base and sepal. These colleters (leaf and sepal) were anatomically compared to identify differences in their structure and secretion mechanism. Samples of sepals and leaves in different development stages were collected and processed according to standard methodologies for anatomical and ultrastructural studies. Sepal and leaf colleters were anatomically similar, being non-vascularized, sessile or short-stalked and composed of a multicellular secretory head with large intercellular spaces where secretion, with a predominance of protein and polysaccharides, is accumulated. The secretory cells have thin walls, dense cytoplasm with granular endoplasmic reticulum, numerous dictyosomes and mitochondria. The ultrastructural characters are in agreement with the production of mucilaginous/protein secretion. The large secretion-filled vacuole merges with the plasma membrane releasing its contents to the periplasmic space where it remains until release outside of the cell wall, where it is accumulated in intercellular spaces formed by schizogeny. This accumulation generates pressure that promotes the passage of secretion through the external wall and the cuticle of superficial secretory cells of the head of the colleter.

Fluoride (F) is the most phytotoxic atmospheric pollutant. The use of plants for passive or active biomonitoring has been a common strategy to detect abnormal atmospheric F concentrations. Tree species are mostly used, although the high sensitivities of some, associated with costly processes of plant replacement, will increase cost outlays associated with F-biomonitoring processes. After a few days of exposure, F-sensitive species often die, and must be replaced in active biomonitoring stations. We therefore investigated the potential use of the grass Panicum maximum for atmospheric F biomonitoring. Although that grass shows fast accumulations of F in their leaves, no visual symptoms of intoxication were observed. Despite of their F-tolerance, plants showed reliable microscopic responses to F (epicuticular wax erosion, plasmolysis of bulliform cells, and damage associated with trichomes). Since microscopic evaluations are mandatory in F-biomonitoring projects, the use of grass species such as P. maximum that show F-tolerance, fast F-uptake and reliable microscopic responses, could represent an option for F biomonitoring that would decrease costs related to plant production and replacement in monitoring stations.

Cacti have a highly specialized stem that enables survival during extended dry periods. Despite the ornamental value of cacti and the fact that stems represent the main source of explants in tissue culture, there are no studies on their morpho-anatomical and cytological characteristics in Melocactus. The present study seeks to address the occurrence of cells with mixed ploidy level in cacti tissues. Specifically, we aim to understand how Melocactus stem tissue is organized, how mixoploidy is distributed when present, and whether detected patterns of ploidy change after long periods of in vitro culture. To analyze tissue organization, Melocactus glaucescens and Melocactus paucispinus plants that had been germinated and cultivated in vitro were analyzed for stem structure using toluidine blue, Xylidine Ponceau, Periodic Acid Schiff, ruthenium red, and acid floroglucin. To investigate patterns of ploidy, apical, medial, and basal zones of the stem, as well as, periphery, cortex, and stele (vascular tissue and pith) regions of the stem and root apexes from four- and ten-year old cultured in vitro were analyzed by flow cytometry. X-ray micro-computed tomography (XRµCT) was performed with fragments of stems from both species. The scarcity of support elements (i.e., sclereids and fibers) indicates that epidermis, hypodermis, and wide-band tracheids present in cortical vascular bundles and stele, as well as water stored in aquifer parenchyma cells along the cortex, provide mechanical support to the stem. Parenchyma cells increase in volume with a four-fold increase in ploidy. M. glaucescens and M. paucispinus exhibit the same pattern of cell ploidy irrespective of topophysical region or age, but there is a marked difference in ploidy between the stem periphery (epidermis and hypodermis), cortex, stele, and roots. Mixoploidy in Melocactus is not related to the age of the culture, but is a developmental trait, whereby endocycles promote cell differentiation to accumulate valuable water.

Acacia mangium and Mimosa caesalpiniaefolia are fast-growing woody fabaceous species that might be suitable for phytoremediation of arsenic (As)-contaminated sites. To date, few studies on their tolerance to As toxicity have been published. Therefore, this study assessed As toxicity symptoms in A. mangium and M. caesalpiniaefolia seedlings under As stress in a greenhouse. Seedlings of Acacia mangium and M. caesalpiniaefolia were grown for 120 d in an Oxisol-sand mixture with 0, 50, 100, 200, and 400 mg kg-1 As, in four replications in four randomized blocks. The plants were assessed for visible toxicity symptoms, dry matter production, shoot/root ratio, root anatomy and As uptake. Analyses of variance and regression showed that the growth of A. mangium and M. caesalpiniaefolia was severely hindered by As, with a reduction in dry matter production of more than 80 % at the highest As rate. The root/shoot ratio increased with increasing As rates. At a rate of 400 mg kg-1 As, whitish chlorosis appeared on Mimosa caesalpiniaefolia seedlings. The root anatomy of both species was altered, resulting in cell collapse, death of root buds and accumulation of phenolic compounds. Arsenic concentration was several times greater in roots than in shoots, with more than 150 and 350 mg kg-1 in M. caesalpiniaefolia and A. mangium roots, respectively. These species could be suitable for phytostabilization of As-contaminated sites, but growth-stimulating measures should be used.

Ocimum selloi Benth. (Lamiaceae) é uma espécie nativa da América do Sul e na medicina popular tem sido usada devido suas propriedades analgésica, anti-inflamatória e antiespasmódica. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi identificar os tipos de tricomas glandulares que ocorrem nos órgãos vegetativos e reprodutivos de O. selloi e determinar a ontogenia desses tricomas. Ramos laterais em início de formação, folhas totalmente expandidas, flores em diferentes estádios de diferenciação, amostras de caule e do eixo das inflorescências foram analisados em microscopias de luz e eletrônica de varredura. Tricomas glandulares do tipo peltado e capitado subséssil foram observados no caule, nas folhas, no eixo da inflorescência e na superfície adaxial das sépalas. Nas sépalas foi encontrado, além dos tricomas secretores peltados e capitados subsésseis, o tricoma glandular capitado pedunculado. A ontogenia inicia-se com a expansão de uma célula protodérmica que, de acordo com a seqüência de divisões periclinais e anticlinais (ora simétricas, ora assimétricas), dá origem aos tricomas. A diferenciação dos tricomas glandulares peltados e capitados não é sincrônica e ocorre muito cedo no desenvolvimento da folha, do caule e do eixo floral.Ocimum selloi Benth. (Lamiaceae) is native to South America and in traditional medicine has been used due to its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antispasmodic properties. The aim of this study was to identify the types of glandular trichomes that occur on the vegetative and reproductive organs of O. selloi and to determine trichome ontogeny. Lateral branches at the initial formation phase, fully opened leaves, flowers at different differentiation stages, and stem and inflorescence axes were analyzed under light and scanning electron microscopy. Glandular trichomes of the peltate and subsessile capitate types were observed on the stem, leaves, inflorescence axis and the adaxial surface of the sepals. On the sepals, in addition to the peltate and subsessile capitate secretory trichomes, the stalked capitate glandular trichome type was detected. Ontogeny began with the expansion of a protodermic cell, which according to the sequence of periclinal and anticlinal division (either symmetric or asymmetric) gave rise to the glandular trichomes. Differentiation of the peltate and capitate glandular trichomes was not synchronized and occurred very early in the leaf, stem and floral axis.

Com o objetivo de avaliar o potencial de acumulação de flúor e o percentual deste elemento removido pela lavagem, quatro espécies de hortaliças foram expostas em área poluída. Spondias dulcis foi utilizada como bioindicadora de reação e apresentou sintomas típicos em resposta ao poluente. Somente a salsa apresentou sintomas. Apesar de aparentemente sadias, as folhas das outras espécies utilizadas para estudos microscópicos, exceto da cebolinha, evidenciaram alterações na superfície, principalmente associados aos estômatos. Houve redução na espessura do limbo, mais acentuada no manjericão e na cebolinha, havendo formação de tecido de cicatrização na couve e condensação do conteúdo das células epidérmicas na salsa. As folhas subuladas e eretas da cebolinha favoreceram o menor acúmulo do poluente; já na salsa, as folhas laminares, recortadas e paralelas ao solo contribuíram para a maior retenção. A lavagem das folhas removeu 34,1 e 73,9% do flúor na cebolinha e na salsa, respectivamente, indicando que a maior parte do poluente encontrava-se internamente na cebolinha e externamente na salsa. O cultivo destas hortaliças em áreas poluídas por flúor é inadequado, pois os teores do poluente estão acima do recomendado para o consumo, mesmo após a lavagem das folhas.To assess fluoride accumulation potential and the percentage of fluoride removed by washing, four herb species were exposed to a polluted area. Spondias dulcis was used as a responsive bioindicator and showed typical fluoride response symptoms. Symptoms were observed only in parsley. Although apparently healthy, the leaves of the remaining herbs, except for chives, showed surface damage associated mainly with stomata when observed under the microscope. A reduction in leaf thickness was also observed, most prominently in basil and chives. Scar tissue was observed in kale, and a retraction of the protoplast of the epidermal cells was observed in parsley. The subulate, erect leaves of chives accumulated less fluoride; on the other hand, parsley leaves are laminar, lobed and parallel to the soil, which contributed to higher pollutant retention. Washing the leaves removed 34.1 and 73.9% of the fluoride on chives and parsley, respectively, indicating that for chives, most of the pollutant was found inside the leaves, while for parsley, the pollutant was located on the outside. Growing these herbs in fluoride-polluted areas is not recommended, since pollutant percentages are above levels recommended for consumption, even after washing the leaves.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o potencial de acúmulo de fluoreto em folhas de boldo-gambá (Plectranthus neochilus) e capim-cidreira (Cymbopogon citratus), determinar o percentual de liberação do poluente por meio da infusão e caracterizar, visual e microscopicamente, os danos foliares causados pelo poluente. Mudas das duas espécies foram submetidas a nevoeiro simulado com fluoreto de potássio. O acúmulo de fluoreto na matéria seca foi mensurado com eletrodo específico em folhas lavadas e não lavadas, infundidas e não infundidas. O percentual de flúor disponibilizado nos chás foi superior para capim-cidreira, embora essa espécie apresente acúmulo de flúor menor que o boldo-gambá. Não foram observados sintomas visuais nas folhas das espécies estudadas, mas ao microscópio eletrônico de varredura, constatou-se a alteração da turgidez das células epidérmicas, ruptura da cutícula e deformação de estômatos e tricomas. O elevado teor de fluoreto nas folhas de C. citratus e P. neochilus e a ausência de sintomas visuais evidenciam que as espécies são tolerantes ao poluente. A lavagem das folhas em água é ineficiente para a remoção do flúor. O acúmulo e a liberação diferenciais de flúor estão relacionados às características morfoanatômicas das espécies analisadas.The objective of this work was to evaluate the fluoride accumulation in leaves of blue coleus (Plectranthus neochilus) and lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus), the percentage of fluoride released through infusion and to characterize visually and through microscopy the injuries caused by the pollutant. Saplings of the species were subjected to a simulated fog with potassium fluoride. Fluoride accumulation in dry matter was measured by a specific electrode in washed and unwashed leaves, subjected and not subjected to infusion. The percentage of available fluorine in teas was higher for lemongrass leaves, even though this species shows a lower fluorine accumulation than blue coleus. No visible symptoms were observed in leaves of either species, although changes in turgidity of the epidermal cells, cuticle rupture and trichome and stomata deformation were observed through scanning electron microscopy. The high contents of fluoride in leaves of C. citratus and P. neochilus and the absence of visual toxicity symptoms reveal that these species are tolerant to the pollutant. Washing the leaves in water is inefficient to remove fluoride. Differences in accumulation and release of fluorine are related to the morpho-anatomical characteristics of the species studied.

O objetivo do trabalho é caracterizar a morfo-anatomia do corpo vegetativo de Deianira erubescens, Deianira pallescens, Deianira nervosa, Deianira chiquitana e Schultesia gracilis, visando fornecer subsídios à taxonomia e compreender algumas estratégias adaptativas. Coletaram-se amostras de indivíduos de Deianira no cerrado e de Schultesia no campo rupestre, MG. O material foi processado para observações em microscopia de luz. D. erubescens e D. pallescens apresentam folhas em rosetas e opostas cruzadas, concrescidas na base, ao longo do caule; D. chiquitana apresenta folhas concrescidas na base apenas na região proximal do caule e folhas opostas cruzadas livres; D. nervosa e S. gracilis apresentam folhas opostas cruzadas livres. No gênero Deianira são observadas raízes com crescimento secundário, sendo não usual em D. erubescens e D. nervosa e micorrizas arbusculares (MAs) do tipo Arum, exceto em D. nervosa; caule fistuloso em D. pallecens; folhas anfiestomáticas e mesofilo homogêneo, exceto em D. nervosa na qual são observadas folhas hipoestomáticas e mesofilo dorsiventral. S. gracilis apresenta raízes com aerênquima e MAs do tipo Paris; caule prismático, alado, fistuloso e folhas hipoestomáticas com mesofilo homogêneo. Caracteres anatômicos podem ser utilizados para distinção das espécies e podem contribuir para compreender estratégias adaptativas ao cerrado e campo rupestre.We characterized the morphology and anatomy of the vegetative body of Deianira erubescens, Deianira pallescens, Deianira nervosa, Deianira chiquitana and Schultesia gracilis to aid in the taxonomy and understanding of adaptive strategies. Samples of Deianira and Schultesia were collected from Cerrado and campo rupestre, MG. The material was processed for observation by light microscopy. D. erubescens and D. pallescens have rosulate, decussate leaves, concrescent at the base along the stem; D. chiquitana has concrescent leaves at the base in the proximal region of the stem and decussate leaves not fused; D. nervosa and S. gracilis have decussate leaves not fused. In the genus Deianira, there are roots with secondary growth, these are not usual in D. erubescens and D. nervosa and Arum-type arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM), except in D. nervosa; stems fistular in D. pallecens; amphistomatic leaves and homogenous mesophyll, except in D. nervosa where there are hypostomatic leaves and dorsiventral mesophyll. S. gracilis has roots with aerenchyma and Paris-type AM, stem prismatic, winged and fistular and hypostomatic leaves with homogenous mesophyll. Anatomical characters may be used successfully in the distinction of species and may be used to understand the adaptation to environment.

Visando avaliar os efeitos do fluoreto sobre capim-braquiária, plantas de Brachiaria brizantha e B. decumbens foram submetidas a nevoeiros simulados com fluoreto (10 µg ml-1). Amostras foliares de porções aparentemente sadias foram coletadas 24 horas após a última exposição para análises microscópicas. Folhas, raízes e rizomas foram submetidos à quantificação do teor de fluoreto. As folhas apresentaram necroses pequenas e esparsas. Somente as folhas acumularam fluoreto, apresentando teores 4,4 e 5,2 vezes maiores que no tratamento controle, em B. brizantha e B. decumbens, respectivamente, não havendo diferença no potencial acumulador das duas espécies. As principais alterações micromorfológicas observadas foram lesões próximas aos tricomas, sugerindo que estes sejam as vias preferenciais de entrada do poluente nas plantas. Porções foliares, visualmente sadias, de ambas as espécies apresentaram danos microscópicos antes do surgimento de sintomas, havendo perda da turgidez das células buliformes em B. brizantha e de todos os tecidos em B. decumbens. Alterações micromorfométricas foram observadas somente em B. decumbens, indicando sua maior sensibilidade ao fluoreto, em comparação com B. brizantha. A realização de experimentos de longa duração será fundamental para elucidar o potencial bioacumulador de B. brizantha.To assess the effects of fluoride on signal grass, plants of Brachiaria brizantha and B. decumbens were submitted to simulated fluoride fog (10 µg ml-1). Leaf fragments from apparently healthy portions were colleted 24 hours after the last exposure and used for microscopic analysis. Roots, leaves and rhizomes were submitted to fluoride content quantification. The leaves presented small, sparse necroses. The accumulation of fluoride was observed on the leaves only. B. brizantha and B. decumbens presented, respectively, 4.4 and 5.2 times more fluoride than the control treatment. No difference was observed concerning the accumulation potential of both species. The main micromorphological alterations observed were injuries near the trichomes, therefore, suggesting that these are the preferential routes by which pollutants enter the plants. Visually healthy leaf portions of the two species showed microscopic damages before symptoms appeared, presenting turgidity loss in the bulliform cells of B. brizantha and in all tissues of B. decumbens. Micromorphometric alterations were observed only in B. decumbens, indicating higher sensibility to fluoride in comparison to B. brizantha. Further studies of long duration will be essential to determine the bioaccumulation potential of B. brizantha.

As espécies vegetais de Cerrado sensu stricto apresentam estratégias adaptativas às condições edáficas e climáticas de altos investimentos em fotoassimilados, nutrientes e água para sua estruturação. A simbiose entre fungos e raízes de plantas é uma importante adaptação radicular que auxilia as plantas na absorção de nutrientes e água do solo, sendo determinantes para a sobrevivência no Cerrado. Com o objetivo de estudar fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (FMAs) e fungos endofíticos do tipo dark septate (DSEFs) nas raízes de algumas espécies arbóreas e herbáceas, nativas do Cerrado sensu stricto, foram testados diferentes métodos para melhor observação das estruturas fúngicas em simbiose. O melhor método de clarificação foi observado quando as raízes foram autoclavadas a 121 °C em KOH 2 %, por 20 min, e com a subseqüente transferência para solução nova de KOH 2 %, por 24 h, em temperatura ambiente. Este procedimento foi repetido e, em seguida, essas amostras foram imersas em H2O2 2 % por 2 h. Os arbúsculos foram observados com maiores detalhes após a inclusão em resina, seccionamento e coloração com azul-de-toluidina. Todas as espécies avaliadas encontravam-se colonizadas por FMAs, e apenas em Xylopia aromatica não se observaram os DSEFs. As espécies herbáceas apresentaram maiores freqüências de colonização micorrízica do que as arbóreas. O caráter generalista dos FMAs e DSEFs observado nas espécies vegetais do Cerrado sensu stricto sugere a importância dessas simbioses como mecanismo adaptativo às condições de Cerrado.Plant species in sensu stricto Cerrado have adaptive strategies to soil and climatic adversities that require high investment of nutrients, water and photoassimilates. The mutualistic fungi - plant root symbiosis is an important adaptation by which plants can improve soil nutrients and water acquisition and it can be determinant for plant survival in Cerrado conditions. The aim of this study was to establish a method for studying arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and dark septate endophytic fungi (DSEF) in roots of some tree and shrub species in stricto sensu Cerrado. The best method for root clarification was obtained after autoclaving root samples with 2 % KOH for 20 min followed by incubation in a new 2 % KOH solution for 24 h at room temperature. This procedure was repeated once and subsequently the samples were immersed in 2 % H2O2 for 2 h. The arbuscules were thoroughly examined after resin inclusion, sectioned and stained with toluidine blue. All plant species evaluated were associated to AMF and all but Xylopia aromatica were associated to DSEF as well. The mycorrhizal frequency in shrubs was higher than in tree species. The widespread occurrence of AMF and DSEF symbioses suggests that they represent an important adaptation to environmental factors in the Cerrado region.

Com os objetivos de avaliar o grau de suscetibilidade e caracterizar as injúrias na morfoanatomia de folhas de Magnolia ovata, mudas foram submetidas à chuva simulada com flúor (10 µg.ml-1 de F-) por 10 dias consecutivos. No tratamento controle, utilizou-se apenas água deionizada. Folhas foram coletadas para quantificação de flúor na matéria seca e fixadas para análises em microscopia de luz e eletrônica de varredura. As folhas apicais apresentaram pequena porcentagem de necroses intervenais e marginais em uma ou ambas as faces e maior acúmulo de flúor, em relação ao controle, quando comparadas com as folhas da porção basal. A análise micromorfológica das folhas aparentemente sadias indicou alterações nas paredes periclinais externas da epiderme e formação de concavidades, além de cristas estomáticas danificadas, erosão de ceras epicuticulares e presença de esporos e hifas de fungos. A caracterização estrutural das injúrias evidenciou retração de protoplasto das células epidérmicas, colapso das células do mesofilo e da epiderme e acúmulo de compostos fenólicos em células das regiões necrosadas. As alterações micromorfológicas das folhas ocorreram antes que sintomas fossem observados, o que comprova a importância da micromorfologia na diagnose precoce da injúria. As plantas de M. ovata apresentaram poucos sintomas visuais em resposta ao flúor, entretanto as alterações morfoanatômicas indicam que essa espécie possui potencial para ser utilizada como bioindicadora.This work aimed to evaluate the degree of susceptibility and characterize the injuries caused by fluoride in the morphoanatomy of Magnolia ovata. Seedlings were subjected to fluoride simulated rain (10 µg.ml-1 of F-) during 10 consecutive days. In the control treatment, only deionized water was used. Leaves were collected for quantification of fluoride in the dry weight and fixed for light and scanning electron microscopy analyses. The apical leaves presented a small percentage of interveinal and margin necrosis in one or both leaf surfaces and greater fluoride accumulation, in relation to the control, than the basal portion leaves. Micromorphological analyses indicated that the areas apparently healthy of epidermis presented alterations in the external periclinal walls and formation of concave shapes, beyond damaged stomatic ledge, erosion of epicuticular waxes and presence of spores and fungal hyphae. The structural characterization of the injuries showed retraction of the protoplast of the epidermal cells, collapse of the mesophyll and epidermal cells and accumulation of phenolic compounds in cells of the necrotic regions. The micromorphological variations occurred before leaf symptoms, confirming the importance of micromorphology in early diagnosis of the injury. Plants of M. ovata presented few visible symptoms in response to fluoride; however, morphoanatomic responses suggest that this species possesses potential features to be used as a bioindicator.

O estudo objetivou caracterizar, anatomicamente, as folhas de Orchidaceae ocorrentes em um campo de altitude (PESB), identificando caracteres anatômicos úteis na interpretação das estratégias adaptativas. As treze espécies estudadas vivem em condições ambientais extremas tendo sido estudados apenas indivíduos terrestres, exceto Pleurothallis teres Lindl. espécie exclusivamente rupícola. Avaliando os caracteres anatômicos adaptativos, dois grupos podem ser distinguidos, os das espécies perenes (Epidendrum secundum Jacq., Epidendrum xanthinum Lindl., Oncidium barbaceniae Lindl., Oncidium blancheti Rchb. F., Pleurothallis prolifera Lindl., Pleurothallis teres Lindl., Zygopetalum brackypetalum Lindl. e Zygopetalum mackaii Hook.) e os das espécies com redução das partes aéreas no período seco (Cleistes gracilis Schdl., Habenaria hydrophila Barb. Rodr., Habenaria janeirensis Kraenzl, Habenaria macronectar Hoehne e Prescottia montana Barb. Rodr.). As espécies perenes apresentam caracteres xeromórficos: folhas coriáceas ou coriáceas suculentas, cutícula espessa e estriada, hipoderme, grupos de fibras esparsas no mesofilo homogêneo, parênquima aqüífero com espessamento em barras ou espiralados nas paredes, idioblastos de ráfides e feixes vasculares colaterais circundados e com calotas de fibras. Nas espécies com redução das partes aéreas ocorrem investimentos diferenciados e os caracteres xeromórficos não são acentuados. As folhas são delgadas, com células epidérmicas adaxiais altas sendo a cutícula delgada geralmente desprovida de estriamentos e a presença de idioblastos de ráfides freqüentes no mesofilo. Não ocorre hipoderme e os feixes vasculares são reduzidos e sem associações com fibras.The purpose of this work was to characterize the leaf anatomy of thirteen Orchidaceae species in a "high altitude grasslands", located at State Park of Serra do Brigadeiro, and identify anatomical characteristics helpful to the interpretation of adaptative strategies of these species. The species studied were all terrestrial plants except Pleurothallis teres Lindl. that occurring on granitic rock living in extremely conditions. Observations made in adaptative anatomic features showed that two different groups can be easily distinguished: perennial species (Epidendrum secundum Jacq., Epidendrum xanthinum Lindl., Oncidium barbaceniae Lindl., Oncidium blancheti Rchb. F., Pleurothallis prolifera Lindl., Pleurothallis teres Lindl., Zygopetalum brackypetalum Lindl. and Zygopetalum mackaii Hook.), and species with reduced aerial parts during drought periods (Cleistes gracilis Schdl., Habenaria hydrophila Barb. Rodr., Habenaria janeirensis Kraenzl, Habenaria macronectar Hoehne and Prescottia montana Barb. Rodr.). The perennial species showed xeromorphic features such as coriaceous or coriaceous-succulent leaves, thick striated cuticle, hypodermis, groups of fibers dispersed into a homogenous mesophyll, aquiferous parenchyma with bars or helical thichenings in the walls, rafid idioblasts and colateral vascular bundles surrounded by groups of fibers. In the species with reduced aerial parts different investments were observed and the xeromorphic features were not stressed. These leaves were thin and showed high adaxial epidermal cells having smooth cuticle and rafid idioblasts present in the mesophyll. No hypodermis was identified and the vascular bundles were reduced without rafid idioblasts with them.

Experiments were conducted in order to characterize the injuries on leaf structure and micromorphology of G. americana and evaluate the degree of susceptibility of this species to simulated acid rain. Plants were exposed to acid rain (pH 3.0) for ten consecutive days. Control plants were submitted only to distilled water (pH 6.0). Leaf tissue was sampled and fixed for light and scanning electron microscopy. Necrotic interveinal spots on the leaf blade occurred. Epidermis and mesophyll cells collapse, hypertrophy of spongy parenchyma cells, accumulation of phenolic compounds and starch grains were observed in leaves exposed to acid rain. The micromorphological analysis showed, in necrotic areas, plasmolized guard cells and cuticle rupture. Epidermal and mesophyll cells alterations occurred before symptoms were visualized in the leaves. These results showed the importance of anatomical data for precocious diagnosis injury and to determine the sensitivity of G. americana to acid rain.Experimentos foram conduzidos para avaliar o grau de susceptibilidade e determinar as injúrias causadas pela chuva ácida simulada na anatomia e micromorfologia foliar de Genipa americana. Plantas foram expostas à chuva com pH 3,0 durante 10 dias consecutivos. No tratamento controle utilizou-se apenas água destilada (pH 6,0). Amostras foliares foram coletadas e fixadas para microscopia de luz e eletrônica de varredura. Foram observados nas folhas expostas à chuva ácida: necroses pontuais intervenais, colapso das células do mesofilo e da epiderme; hipertrofia do parênquima lacunoso e acúmulo de compostos fenólicos e grãos de amido. A análise micromorfológica evidenciou, nas áreas necrosadas, plasmólise das células-guarda e ruptura da cutícula e da crista estomática. Alterações anatômicas ocorreram antes que sintomas visuais fossem observados nas folhas. Estes resultados comprovam a importância de dados anatômicos na diagnose precoce da injúria e na determinação da sensibilidade de G. americana à chuva ácida.

A anatomia foliar de treze espécies pertencentes a nove gêneros da subfamília Hippocrateoideae (Celastraceae) foi estudada visando a seleção de caracteres anatômicos para subsidiar a taxonomia dos gêneros e espécies. As espécies estudadas foram: Anthodon decussatum Ruiz & Pav., Cheiloclinium cognatum (Miers) A.C. Sm., Cheiloclinium serratum (Cambess.) A.C. Sm., Cuervea crenulata Mennega, Elachyptera micrantha (Cambess.) A.C. Sm., Hippocratea volubilis L., Peritassa flaviflora A.C. Sm., Peritassa mexiae A.C.Sm., Pristimera nervosa (Miers) A.C. Sm., Salacia crassifolia (Mart. ex Schult.) G. Don, Tontelea fluminensis (Peyr.) A.C. Sm., Tontelea leptophylla A.C. Sm. e Tontelea miersii (Peyr.) A.C. Sm. Os caracteres anatômicos selecionados como diagnósticos para a taxonomia dos diferentes gêneros e espécies são: o tipo de esclereíde presente no pecíolo ou na lâmina foliar, o tipo de estômato, a conformação do sistema vascular do pecíolo, a sinuosidade das paredes anticlinais das células epidérmicas, a presença de hipoderme, a ocorrência de laticíferos, dentre outros.Leaf anatomy of thirteen species belonging to nine genera of the subfamily Hippocrateoideae (Celastraceae) was studied, in order to select anatomical characters to help the taxonomy at genera and species levels. The selected anatomical characters that can be used as diagnostic for the taxonomy of the distinct genera and species are: the type of sclereids in petiole or leaf blade, stomata type, the conformation of the petiole vascular system, shape of epidermal cell walls, presence of hypodermis, occurrence of laticifers, among others.

São abordados a morfologia e a biologia floral de Ruellia menthoides (Nees) Hiern e R. brevifolia (Pohl) C. Ezcurra, na Reserva Florestal Mata do Paraíso, remanescente de Floresta Atlântica, em Viçosa, Zona da Mata de Minas Gerais, Brasil. Ruellia menthoides e R. brevifolia são espécies cleistógamas, ou seja, apresentam dimorfismo floral, produzindo flores casmógamas normais (CA) e cleistógamas (CL). Além disso, formas intermediárias entre esses tipos florais (flores casmógamas reduzidas e semicleistógamas) também são observadas. Em R. menthoides a cleistogamia é inédita, ampliando o número de espécies desse gênero com esse mecanismo reprodutivo. A alogamia, nessas espécies, é favorecida pela produção de flores CA hercogâmicas, especialmente em R. menthoides, e pela dicogamia parcial. A floração de ambas as espécies ocorreu durante todo o ano. Houve pequena sobreposição do período de produção dos dois tipos florais em R. menthoides e ampla sobreposição em R. brevifolia. Em R. menthoides, o início da produção de flores CL coincidiu com o período de transição da estação úmida para a seca, e em R. brevifolia, a produção desse tipo floral ocorreu principalmente na estação seca. A complexidade taxonômica de Ruellia parece estar relacionada à escassez de informações sobre a biologia reprodutiva de suas espécies, que é agravada com o polimorfismo floral das espécies cleistógamas.Floral morphology and biology of Ruellia menthoides (Nees) Hiern and R. brevifolia (Pohl) C. Ezcurra were analyzed in Reserva Florestal Mata do Paraíso, a remainder of the Atlantic forest, in Viçosa, Zona da Mata, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. R. menthoides and R. brevifolia are cleistogamous, e.g., they show floral dimorphism, with normal chasmogamous (CA) and cleistogamous (CL) flowers. Intermediate forms between these two floral types (miniature chasmogamous and semicleistogamous flowers) are also observed. R. menthoides cleistogamy is a novel discovery, which augments the number of species of this genus with that reproductive system. In these species, alogamy is favored by CA hercogamic flower production, verified mainly in R. menthoides, and by partial dichogamy. In both species, flowers production occurs throughout the year. There was a small production period overlap of both types of flowers in R. menthoides and a large overlap in R. brevifolia. The initial production of CL flowers in R. menthoides coincided with the transition period from the wet to the dry season and in R. brevifolia, such type of flowers was produced mainly in the dry season. The taxonomic complexity of Ruellia may be related to the scarcity of information on the reproductive biology of its species, and by the floral polymorphism of the cleistogamous species.

Estudos foram conduzidos com o objetivo de verificar o efeito de tricomas, aleloquímicos e nutrientes nas folhas de partes do dossel das plantas na resistência de Lycopersicon hirsutum à traça- do-tomateiro, Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae). Foram quantificados os teores de 2-tridecanona (2-TD), 2-undecanona (2-UD), N, P, K, Ca e Mg, densidade e tipos de tricomas e tamanho das folhas nos terços apical, mediano e basal do dossel de plantas de L. hirsutum e de L. esculentum e estudaram- se os efeitos destes fatores sobre características biológicas de T. absoluta. Observou-se elevação no teor de 2-TD da base para o ápice do dossel. Não se detectou diferença significativa quanto ao número de ovos de T. absoluta ao longo do dossel de L. hirsutum, constatando-se em L. esculentum maior oviposição nos terços apical e mediano do que no basal. As folhas do terço apical de L. hirsutum apresentaram maior efeito deletério sobre as larvas de traça.The objective of this work was to study the effect of trichomes, alellochemicals and minerals in the leaves of different canopy heights on the resistance of Lycopersicon hirsutum to tomato leaf miner, Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae). Effects of 2-tridecanone (2-TD), 2-undecanone (2-UD), N, P, K, Ca and Mg levels, density and types of trichomes and leaf area on apical, medium and basal parts of plant dossel of L. hirsutum and L. esculentum on the oviposition and mines number of T. absoluta was studied. Production of 2-TD increased from the bottom to the top of the canopy. The apical part of plants of L. hirsutum showed more antibiotic effect on the caterpillar. T. absoluta oviposited more on leaves of the apical and medium portion of the plants than in the basal parts of L. esculentum.

Foi realizado um levantamento preliminar de Pteridophyta no Parque Estadual do Rio Doce, sendo coletadas 15 famílias, 27 gêneros c 57 espécies. As famílias encontradas foram Aspleniaceae, Blechnaceae, Dennstaedtiaceae, Dryopteridaceae, Gleicheniaceae, Hymenophyllaceae, Lomariopsidaceae, Osmundaceae, Polypodiaceae, Pteridaceae, Schizaeaceae, Selaginellaceae, Tectariaceae, Thelypteridaceae e Woodsiaceae. Destas, as mais representativas foram Pteridaceae, com 29,8% das espécies distribuídas em quatro gêneros (Adiantum, Hermionitis, Pityrogramma e Pteris) e Thelypteridaceae que apresentou 17,5% das espécies, incluídas em dois gêneros (Macrothelypteris e Thelypteris). As demais famílias variaram de 1,8-8,8% do total das espécies. Das 57 espécies registradas no Parque, 22 apresentaram distribuição bastante restrita, sendo Pteridaceae e Thelypteridaceae as duas famílias de ocorrência mais ampla. Análises do solo das trilhas do Parque revelaram solo ácido, com pH variando de 4,3-5,1, preferencialmente argiloso a muito argiloso e com teores médio a baixo de P, Ca, Al e Mg.A Pteridophyta preliminary survey was carried out at Rio Doce State Park, being identified 15 families, 27 genera, and 57 species. The following families were found: Aspleniaceae, Blechnaceae, Dennstaedtiaceae, Dryopteridaceae, Gleicheniaceae, Hymenophyllaceae, Lomariopsidaceae, Osmundaceae, Polypodiaceae, Pteridaceae, Schizaeaceae, Selaginellaceae, Tectariaceae, Thelypteridaceae, and Woodsiaceae. Among them, the most representatives were Pteridaceae, with 29.8% of the collected species, distributed in four genera (Adiantum, Hemionitis, Pityrogramma, and Pteris) and Thelypteridaceae with 17.5% of the species included into two genera (Macrothelypteris and Thelypteris). The remaining families ranged from 1.8 to 8.8% of the species. Out of 57 registered species in the Park. 22 showed a restricted distribution; on the other hand Pteridaceae and Thelypteridaceae were the ones with a broader occurrence. Physical and chemical soil analysis of the Park's paths presented acid pH (4.3-5.1), variable clay proportion and médium to low P, Ca, Al and Mg content.

A dinâmica interna do crescimento e desenvolvimento das plantas pode ser modificada mediante a aplicação de certos produtos químicos. O trabalho teve como objetivos observar o efeito da aplicação de doses crescentes de clormequat, daminozide e paclobutrazol em plantas de gerânio zonal (Pelargonium x hortorum L. H. Bailey). Plantas de gerânio das cultivares Grand Prix, Atlantis e Rocky Mountain foram submetidas a três pulverizações foliares nas concentrações de 750, 1000 e 1500 mg i.a./l de clormequat, 1000, 2000 e 4000 mg i.a./l de daminozide, 750+2250, 1000+3000 e 1500+4500 da mistura de clormequat+daminozide e 5, 10 e 20 mg i.a./l de paclobutrazol. A característica dias até a antese não foi afetada por nenhum tratamento. O daminozide promoveu redução no alongamento das hastes de plantas de gerânio, porém as altas concentrações necessárias para alcançar os resultados desejados podem resultar em custos elevados. As concentrações da mistura de retardantes utilizada proporcionaram maior intensidade de controle do crescimento das plantas quando comparada ao uso do clormequat e daminozide separadamente. Não foram observados sintomas de fitotoxidez, porém o uso da mistura implica manejo mais trabalhoso. Pulverizações foliares com clormequat por três vezes nas concentrações 1000 e 1500 mg i.a./l e com paclobutrazol na concentração de 20 mg i.a./l resultaram em plantas com arquitetura adequada, sendo esse o tratamento recomendado para alcançar os resultados desejados.

O presente estudo objetivou caracterizar anatomicamente raízes de espécies de Orchidaceae ocorrentes em um campo de altitude no Parque Estadual da Serra do Brigadeiro, identificando caracteres de significado ecológico e valor taxonômico. Foram estudados apenas indivíduos terrestres, exceto Pleurothallis teres espécie exclusivamente rupícola. A comparação dos caracteres anatômicos das espécies estudadas mostrou dois grupos com estratégias distintas: Epidendrum secundum, E. xanthinum, Oncidium barbaceniae, O. blancheti, Pleurothallis prolifera, P. teres, Zygopetalum mackayi e Z. brachypetalum são espécies perenes e xeromórfitas, enquanto Cleistes gracilis, Habenaria hydrophila, H. janeirensis, H. macronectar e Prescottia montana são espécies que completam o ciclo de vida antes do período seco com redução das partes aéreas neste período, sendo consideradas plantas mesófitas. Observou-se maior similaridade entre os gêneros Epidendrum, Oncidium e Pleurothallis. No caso do gênero Habenaria observou-se maior similaridade entre as espécies Habenaria hydrophila e H. macronectar, devido às diferenças no cilindro vascular e na região cortical de Habenaria janeirensis.

ABSTRACT Extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) are specialized structures that produce and release nectar and are located on leaves, cotyledons and, more seldomly, stems. Peculiar leaf nectaries have been described for thirty-three Neotropical species of Gentianaceae, while stem nectaries have been reported for only nine. The aim of this study was to verify the occurrence of stem EFNs within Gentianaceae and investigate the existence of a correlation between their occurrence and the geographical distribution of species. Samples of internodal regions from field and herbarium specimens were submitted to standard light microscopy techniques. Data regarding the geographical distribution of species were acquired from herbarium specimens and the literature. A total of 37 species were investigated, representing 25 genera distributed among five tribes. Nectaries, composed of modified epidermal cells, were observed in 16 species restricted to the Neotropical tribes Helieae, Saccifolieae, Potalieae and Coutoubeinae; exceptions were Cicendia quadrangularis and Zygostigma australe, which both occur in the Neotropics but do not possess EFNs. These results demonstrate that stem EFNs are common among Neotropical taxa of Gentianaceae, and are typically absent from taxa in temperate regions.
