Abstract

The recent direct detection of neutrinos at the LHC has opened a new window on high-energy particle physics and highlighted the potential of forward physics for groundbreaking discoveries. In the last year, the physics case for forward physics has continued to grow, and there has been extensive work on defining the Forward Physics Facility and its experiments to realize this physics potential in a timely and cost-effective manner. Following a 2-page Executive Summary, we present the status of the FPF, beginning with the FPF's unique potential to shed light on dark matter, new particles, neutrino physics, QCD, and astroparticle physics. We summarize the current designs for the Facility and its experiments, FASER2, FASER$\nu$2, FORMOSA, and FLArE, and conclude by discussing international partnerships and organization, and the FPF's schedule, budget, and technical coordination., Comment: 32 pages

Abstract

The first FASER search for a light, long-lived particle decaying into a pair of photons is reported. The search uses LHC proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}=13.6~\text{TeV}$ collected in 2022 and 2023, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $57.7\text{fb}^{-1}$. A model with axion-like particles (ALPs) dominantly coupled to weak gauge bosons is the primary target. Signal events are characterised by high-energy deposits in the electromagnetic calorimeter and no signal in the veto scintillators. One event is observed, compared to a background expectation of $0.44 \pm 0.39$ events, which is entirely dominated by neutrino interactions. World-leading constraints on ALPs are obtained for masses up to $300~\text{MeV}$ and couplings to the Standard Model W gauge boson, $g_{aWW}$, around $10^{-4}$ GeV$^{-1}$, testing a previously unexplored region of parameter space. Other new particle models that lead to the same experimental signature, including ALPs coupled to gluons or photons, U(1)$_B$ gauge bosons, up-philic scalars, and a Type-I two-Higgs doublet model, are also considered for interpretation, and new constraints on previously viable parameter space are presented in this paper., Comment: 37 pages, 22 figures

Abstract

This paper presents the first results of the study of high-energy electron and muon neutrino charged-current interactions in the FASER$\nu$ emulsion/tungsten detector of the FASER experiment at the LHC. A subset of the FASER$\nu$ volume, which corresponds to a target mass of 128.6~kg, was exposed to neutrinos from the LHC $pp$ collisions with a centre-of-mass energy of 13.6~TeV and an integrated luminosity of 9.5 fb$^{-1}$. Applying stringent selections requiring electrons with reconstructed energy above 200~GeV, four electron neutrino interaction candidate events are observed with an expected background of $0.025^{+0.015}_{-0.010}$, leading to a statistical significance of 5.2$\sigma$. This is the first direct observation of electron neutrino interactions at a particle collider. Eight muon neutrino interaction candidate events are also detected, with an expected background of $0.22^{+0.09}_{-0.07}$, leading to a statistical significance of 5.7$\sigma$. The signal events include neutrinos with energies in the TeV range, the highest-energy electron and muon neutrinos ever detected from an artificial source. The energy-independent part of the interaction cross section per nucleon is measured over an energy range of 560--1740 GeV (520--1760 GeV) for $\nu_e$ ($\nu_{\mu}$) to be $(1.2_{-0.7}^{+0.8}) \times 10^{-38}~\mathrm{cm}^{2}\,\mathrm{GeV}^{-1}$ ($(0.5\pm0.2) \times 10^{-38}~\mathrm{cm}^{2}\,\mathrm{GeV}^{-1}$), consistent with Standard Model predictions. These are the first measurements of neutrino interaction cross sections in those energy ranges.

Abstract

The Forward Search Experiment (FASER) at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has recently directly detected the first collider neutrinos. Neutrinos play an important role in all FASER analyses, either as signal or background, and it is therefore essential to understand the neutrino event rates. In this study, we update previous simulations and present prescriptions for theoretical predictions of neutrino fluxes and cross sections, together with their associated uncertainties. With these results, we discuss the potential for possible measurements that could be carried out in the coming years with the FASER neutrino data to be collected in LHC Run 3 and Run 4., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

We report the first direct observation of neutrino interactions at a particle collider experiment. Neutrino candidate events are identified in a 13.6 TeV center-of-mass energy $pp$ collision data set of 35.4 fb${}^{-1}$ using the active electronic components of the FASER detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The candidates are required to have a track propagating through the entire length of the FASER detector and be consistent with a muon neutrino charged-current interaction. We infer $153^{+12}_{-13}$ neutrino interactions with a significance of 16 standard deviations above the background-only hypothesis. These events are consistent with the characteristics expected from neutrino interactions in terms of secondary particle production and spatial distribution, and they imply the observation of both neutrinos and anti-neutrinos with an incident neutrino energy of significantly above 200 GeV., Comment: Submitted to PRL on March 24 2023

Abstract

Tau neutrino is the least studied lepton of the Standard Model (SM). The NA65/DsTau experiment targets to investigate $D_s$, the parent particle of the $\nu_\tau$, using the nuclear emulsion-based detector and to decrease the systematic uncertainty of $\nu_\tau$ flux prediction from over 50% to 10% for future beam dump experiments. In the experiment, the emulsion detectors are exposed to the CERN SPS 400 GeV proton beam. To provide optimal conditions for the reconstruction of interactions, the protons are required to be uniformly distributed over the detector's surface with an average density of $10^5~\rm{cm^{-2}}$ and the fluctuation of less than 10%. To address this issue, we developed a new proton irradiation system called the target mover. The new target mover provided irradiation with a proton density of $0.98~\rm{cm^{-2}}$ and the density fluctuation of $2.0\pm 0.3$% in the DsTau 2021 run., Comment: 9 pages, 16 figures

Abstract

High energy collisions at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC) produce a large number of particles along the beam collision axis, outside of the acceptance of existing LHC experiments. The proposed Forward Physics Facility (FPF), to be located several hundred meters from the ATLAS interaction point and shielded by concrete and rock, will host a suite of experiments to probe standard model (SM) processes and search for physics beyond the standard model (BSM). In this report, we review the status of the civil engineering plans and the experiments to explore the diverse physics signals that can be uniquely probed in the forward region. FPF experiments will be sensitive to a broad range of BSM physics through searches for new particle scattering or decay signatures and deviations from SM expectations in high statistics analyses with TeV neutrinos in this low-background environment. High statistics neutrino detection will also provide valuable data for fundamental topics in perturbative and non-perturbative QCD and in weak interactions. Experiments at the FPF will enable synergies between forward particle production at the LHC and astroparticle physics to be exploited. We report here on these physics topics, on infrastructure, detector, and simulation studies, and on future directions to realize the FPF's physics potential.

Abstract

FASER, the ForwArd Search ExpeRiment, is an experiment dedicated to searching for light, extremely weakly-interacting particles at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Such particles may be produced in the very forward direction of the LHC's high-energy collisions and then decay to visible particles inside the FASER detector, which is placed 480 m downstream of the ATLAS interaction point, aligned with the beam collisions axis. FASER also includes a sub-detector, FASER$\nu$, designed to detect neutrinos produced in the LHC collisions and to study their properties. In this paper, each component of the FASER detector is described in detail, as well as the installation of the experiment system and its commissioning using cosmic-rays collected in September 2021 and during the LHC pilot beam test carried out in October 2021. Abstract

High energy collisions at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC) produce a large number of particles along the beam collision axis, outside of the acceptance of existing LHC experiments. The proposed Forward Physics Facility (FPF), to be located several hundred meters from the ATLAS interaction point and shielded by concrete and rock, will host a suite of experiments to probe Standard Model (SM) processes and search for physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). In this report, we review the status of the civil engineering plans and the experiments to explore the diverse physics signals that can be uniquely probed in the forward region. FPF experiments will be sensitive to a broad range of BSM physics through searches for new particle scattering or decay signatures and deviations from SM expectations in high statistics analyses with TeV neutrinos in this low-background environment. High statistics neutrino detection will also provide valuable data for fundamental topics in perturbative and non-perturbative QCD and in weak interactions. Experiments at the FPF will enable synergies between forward particle production at the LHC and astroparticle physics to be exploited. Abstract

Hypothetical short-range interactions could be detected by measuring the wavefunctions of ultracold neutrons (UCNs) on a mirror bounded by the Earth's gravitational field. The Searches require detectors with higher spatial resolution. We are developing a UCN detector for the with a high spatial resolution, which consists of a Si substrate, a thin converter layer including $^{10}$B$_{4}$C, and a layer of fine-grained nuclear emulsion. Its resolution was estimated to be less than 100 nm by fitting tracks of either $^{7}$Li nuclei or $\alpha$-particles, which were created when neutrons interacted with the $^{10}$B$_{4}$C layer. For actual measurements of the spatial distributions, the following two improvements were made: The first was to establish a method to align microscopic images with high accuracy within a wide region of 65 mm $\times$ 0.2 mm. We created reference marks of 1 $\mu$m and 5 $\mu$m diameter with an interval of 50 $\mu$m and 500 $\mu$m, respectively, on the Si substrate by electron beam lithography and realized a position accuracy of less than 30 nm. The second was to build a holder that could maintain the atmospheric pressure around the nuclear emulsion to utilize it under vacuum during exposure to UCNs. The intrinsic resolution of the improved detector was estimated by evaluating the blur of a transmission image of a gadolinium grating taken by cold neutrons as better than 0.56 $\pm$ 0.08 $\mu$m, which included the grating accuracy. A test exposure to UCNs was conducted to obtain the spatial distribution of UCNs in the Earth's gravitational field. Although the test was successful, a blurring of 6.9 $\mu$m was found in the measurements, compared with a theoretical curve. We identified the blurring caused by the refraction of UCNs due to the roughness of the upstream surface of the substrate. Polishing of the surface makes the resolution less than 100 nm.

Abstract

FASER is a new experiment designed to search for new light weakly-interacting long-lived particles (LLPs) and study high-energy neutrino interactions in the very forward region of the LHC collisions at CERN. The experimental apparatus is situated 480 m downstream of the ATLAS interaction-point aligned with the beam collision axis. The FASER detector includes four identical tracker stations constructed from silicon microstrip detectors. Three of the tracker stations form a tracking spectrometer, and enable FASER to detect the decay products of LLPs decaying inside the apparatus, whereas the fourth station is used for the neutrino analysis. The spectrometer has been installed in the LHC complex since March 2021, while the fourth station is not yet installed. FASER will start physics data taking when the LHC resumes operation in early 2022. This paper describes the design, construction and testing of the tracking spectrometer, including the associated components such as the mechanics, readout electronics, power supplies and cooling system.

Abstract

The FASER experiment is a new small and inexpensive experiment that is placed 480 meters downstream of the ATLAS experiment at the CERN LHC. FASER is designed to capture decays of new long-lived particles, produced outside of the ATLAS detector acceptance. These rare particles can decay in the FASER detector together with about 500-1000 Hz of other particles originating from the ATLAS interaction point. A very high efficiency trigger and data acquisition system is required to ensure that the physics events of interest will be recorded. This paper describes the trigger and data acquisition system of the FASER experiment and presents performance results of the system acquired during initial commissioning.

Abstract

The Forward Physics Facility (FPF) is a proposal to create a cavern with the space and infrastructure to support a suite of far-forward experiments at the Large Hadron Collider during the High Luminosity era. Located along the beam collision axis and shielded from the interaction point by at least 100 m of concrete and rock, the FPF will house experiments that will detect particles outside the acceptance of the existing large LHC experiments and will observe rare and exotic processes in an extremely low-background environment. In this work, we summarize the current status of plans for the FPF, including recent progress in civil engineering in identifying promising sites for the FPF and the experiments currently envisioned to realize the FPF's physics potential. We then review the many Standard Model and new physics topics that will be advanced by the FPF, including searches for long-lived particles, probes of dark matter and dark sectors, high-statistics studies of TeV neutrinos of all three flavors, aspects of perturbative and non-perturbative QCD, and high-energy astroparticle physics., Comment: revised version, accepted by Physics Reports

Abstract

FASER$\nu$ at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is designed to directly detect collider neutrinos for the first time and study their cross sections at TeV energies, where no such measurements currently exist. In 2018, a pilot detector employing emulsion films was installed in the far-forward region of ATLAS, 480 m from the interaction point, and collected 12.2 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. We describe the analysis of this pilot run data and the observation of the first neutrino interaction candidates at the LHC. Abstract

FASER is a new experiment designed to search for new light weakly-interactinglong-lived particles (LLPs) and study high-energy neutrino interactions in thevery forward region of the LHC collisions at CERN. The experimental apparatusis situated 480 m downstream of the ATLAS interaction-point aligned with thebeam collision axis. The FASER detector includes four identical trackerstations constructed from silicon microstrip detectors. Three of the trackerstations form a tracking spectrometer, and enable FASER to detect the decayproducts of LLPs decaying inside the apparatus, whereas the fourth station isused for the neutrino analysis. The spectrometer has been installed in the LHCcomplex since March 2021, while the fourth station is not yet installed. FASERwill start physics data taking when the LHC resumes operation in early 2022.This paper describes the design, construction and testing of the trackingspectrometer, including the associated components such as the mechanics,readout electronics, power supplies and cooling system.

Abstract

The FASER experiment is a new small and inexpensive experiment that is placed480 meters downstream of the ATLAS experiment at the CERN LHC. FASER isdesigned to capture decays of new long-lived particles, produced outside of theATLAS detector acceptance. These rare particles can decay in the FASER detectortogether with about 500-1000 Hz of other particles originating from the ATLASinteraction point. A very high efficiency trigger and data acquisition systemis required to ensure that the physics events of interest will be recorded.This paper describes the trigger and data acquisition system of the FASERexperiment and presents performance results of the system acquired duringinitial commissioning.

Abstract

FASERnu is a proposed small and inexpensive emulsion detector designed to detect collider neutrinos for the first time and study their properties. FASERnu will be located directly in front of FASER, 480 m from the ATLAS interaction point along the beam collision axis in the unused service tunnel TI12. From 2021-23 during Run 3 of the 14 TeV LHC, roughly 1,300 electron neutrinos, 20,000 muon neutrinos, and 20 tau neutrinos will interact in FASERnu with TeV-scale energies. With the ability to observe these interactions, reconstruct their energies, and distinguish flavors, FASERnu will probe the production, propagation, and interactions of neutrinos at the highest human-made energies ever recorded. The FASERnu detector will be composed of 1000 emulsion layers interleaved with tungsten plates. The total volume of the emulsion and tungsten is 25cm x 25cm x 1.35m, and the tungsten target mass is 1.2 tonnes. From 2021-23, 7 sets of emulsion layers will be installed, with replacement roughly every 20-50 1/fb in planned Technical Stops. In this document, we summarize FASERnu's physics goals and discuss the estimates of neutrino flux and interaction rates. We then describe the FASERnu detector in detail, including plans for assembly, transport, installation, and emulsion replacement, and procedures for emulsion readout and analyzing the data. Abstract

Neutrinos are copiously produced at particle colliders, but no collider neutrino has ever been detected. Colliders, and particularly hadron colliders, produce both neutrinos and anti-neutrinos of all flavors at very high energies, and they are therefore highly complementary to those from other sources. FASER, the recently approved Forward Search Experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, is ideally located to provide the first detection and study of collider neutrinos. We investigate the prospects for neutrino studies of a proposed component of FASER, FASER$\nu$, a 25cm x 25cm x 1.35m emulsion detector to be placed directly in front of the FASER spectrometer in tunnel TI12. Abstract

In the DsTau experiment at the CERN SPS, an independent and direct way to measure tau neutrino production following high energy proton interactions was proposed. As the main source of tau neutrinos is a decay of Ds mesons, produced in proton-nucleus interactions, the project aims at measuring a differential cross section of this reaction. The experimental method is based on a use of high resolution emulsion detectors for effective registration of events with short lived particle decays. Here we present the motivation of the study, details of the experimental technique, and the first results of the analysis of the data collected during test runs, which prove feasibility of the full scale study of the process in future.

Abstract

FASER, the ForwArd Search ExpeRiment, is a proposed experiment dedicated to searching for light, extremely weakly-interacting particles at the LHC. Such particles may be produced in the LHC's high-energy collisions in large numbers in the far-forward region and then travel long distances through concrete and rock without interacting. They may then decay to visible particles in FASER, which is placed 480 m downstream of the ATLAS interaction point. In this work, we describe the FASER program. In its first stage, FASER is an extremely compact and inexpensive detector, sensitive to decays in a cylindrical region of radius R = 10 cm and length L = 1.5 m. FASER is planned to be constructed and installed in Long Shutdown 2 and will collect data during Run 3 of the 14 TeV LHC from 2021-23. If FASER is successful, FASER 2, a much larger successor with roughly R ~ 1 m and L ~ 5 m, could be constructed in Long Shutdown 3 and collect data during the HL-LHC era from 2026-35. FASER and FASER 2 have the potential to discover dark photons, dark Higgs bosons, heavy neutral leptons, axion-like particles, and many other long-lived particles, as well as provide new information about neutrinos, with potentially far-ranging implications for particle physics and cosmology. Abstract

FASERnu is a proposed small and inexpensive emulsion detector designed todetect collider neutrinos for the first time and study their properties.FASERnu will be located directly in front of FASER, 480 m from the ATLASinteraction point along the beam collision axis in the unused service tunnelTI12. From 2021-23 during Run 3 of the 14 TeV LHC, roughly 1,300 electronneutrinos, 20,000 muon neutrinos, and 20 tau neutrinos will interact in FASERnuwith TeV-scale energies. With the ability to observe these interactions,reconstruct their energies, and distinguish flavors, FASERnu will probe theproduction, propagation, and interactions of neutrinos at the highesthuman-made energies ever recorded. The FASERnu detector will be composed of1000 emulsion layers interleaved with tungsten plates. The total volume of theemulsion and tungsten is 25cm x 25cm x 1.35m, and the tungsten target mass is1.2 tonnes. From 2021-23, 7 sets of emulsion layers will be installed, withreplacement roughly every 20-50 1/fb in planned Technical Stops. In thisdocument, we summarize FASERnu's physics goals and discuss the estimates ofneutrino flux and interaction rates. We then describe the FASERnu detector indetail, including plans for assembly, transport, installation, and emulsionreplacement, and procedures for emulsion readout and analyzing the data. Weclose with cost estimates for the detector components and infrastructure workand a timeline for the experiment.

Abstract

Neutrinos are copiously produced at particle colliders, but no collider neutrino has ever been detected. In particular, we consider all of the renormalizable portal interactions, leading to dark photons, dark Higgs bosons, and heavy neutral leptons (HNLs); light B-L and $L_i - L_j$ gauge bosons; axion-like particles (ALPs) that are coupled dominantly to photons, fermions, and gluons through non-renormalizable operators; and pseudoscalars with Yukawa-like couplings. We find that FASER and its follow-up, FASER 2, have a full physics program, with discovery sensitivity in all of these models and potentially far-reaching implications for particle physics and cosmology.

Abstract

Such particles are dominantly produced along the beam collision axis and may be long-lived, traveling hundreds of meters before decaying. To exploit both of these properties, FASER is to be located along the beam collision axis, 480 m downstream from the ATLAS interaction point, in the unused service tunnel TI18. We propose that FASER be installed in TI18 in Long Shutdown 2 in time to collect data from 2021-23 during Run 3 of the 14 TeV LHC. FASER will detect new particles that decay within a cylindrical volume with radius R= 10 cm and length L = 1.5 m. With these small dimensions, FASER will complement the LHC's existing physics program, extending its discovery potential to a host of new particles, including dark photons, axion-like particles, and other CP-odd scalars. A FLUKA simulation and analytical estimates have confirmed that numerous potential backgrounds are highly suppressed at the FASER location, and the first in situ measurements are currently underway. To search for such events, FASER will be located 480 mdownstream of the ATLAS IP in the unused service tunnel TI12 and be sensitiveto particles that decay in a cylindrical volume with radius R=10 cm and lengthL=1.5 m. FASER will complement the LHC's existing physics program, extendingits discovery potential to a host of new, light particles, with potentiallyfar-reaching implications for particle physics and cosmology. This document describes the technical details of the FASER detectorcomponents: the magnets, the tracker, the scintillator system, and thecalorimeter, as well as the trigger and readout system. The preparatory workthat is needed to install and operate the detector, including civilengineering, transport, and integration with various services is alsopresented. The information presented includes preliminary cost estimates forthe detector components and the infrastructure work, as well as a timeline forthe design, construction, and installation of the experiment.

Abstract

FASER,the ForwArd Search ExpeRiment,is a proposed experiment dedicated tosearching for light, extremely weakly-interacting particles at the LHC. Suchparticles may be produced in the LHC's high-energy collisions and travel longdistances through concrete and rock without interacting. They may then decay tovisible particles in FASER, which is placed 480 m downstream of the ATLASinteraction point. In this work we briefly describe the FASER detector layoutand the status of potential backgrounds. We then present the sensitivity reachfor FASER for a large number of long-lived particle models, updating previousresults to a uniform set of detector assumptions, and analyzing new models. Inparticular, we consider all of the renormalizable portal interactions, leadingto dark photons, dark Higgs bosons, and heavy neutral leptons (HNLs); light B-Land $L_i - L_j$ gauge bosons; axion-like particles (ALPs) that are coupleddominantly to photons, fermions, and gluons through non-renormalizableoperators; and pseudoscalars with Yukawa-like couplings. We find that FASER andits follow-up, FASER 2, have a full physics program, with discovery sensitivityin all of these models and potentially far-reaching implications for particlephysics and cosmology.

Abstract

FASER is a proposed small and inexpensive experiment designed to search forlight, weakly-interacting particles at the LHC. Such particles are dominantlyproduced along the beam collision axis and may be long-lived, travelinghundreds of meters before decaying. To exploit both of these properties, FASERis to be located along the beam collision axis, 480 m downstream from the ATLASinteraction point, in the unused service tunnel TI18. We propose that FASER beinstalled in TI18 in Long Shutdown 2 in time to collect data from 2021-23during Run 3 of the 14 TeV LHC. FASER will detect new particles that decaywithin a cylindrical volume with radius R= 10 cm and length L = 1.5 m. Withthese small dimensions, FASER will complement the LHC's existing physicsprogram, extending its discovery potential to a host of new particles,including dark photons, axion-like particles, and other CP-odd scalars. A FLUKAsimulation and analytical estimates have confirmed that numerous potentialbackgrounds are highly suppressed at the FASER location, and the first in situmeasurements are currently underway. We describe FASER's location and discoverypotential, its target signals and backgrounds, the detector's layout andcomponents, and the experiment's preliminary cost estimate, funding, andtimeline.

Abstract

Over the last ten years, radiography by means of absorption of cosmic-ray muons (muography) has been estab- lished as a tool for volcano internal structure investigation. Meanwhile, muography has spread out to many other applications. The Eiger-mu project (2015���2019, University of Bern) represents one such development in the field of glaciology, where the high penetration power of muons can be exploited to precisely estimate the topography of the mountains hidden by overlying glaciers. Technological progress and prospects of muography in glaciology are reviewed in this chapter through the pilot experiments performed at the Aletsch and Eiger glaciers in Switzerland.

Abstract

Knowledge about muon tomography has spread in recent years in the geoscientific community and several collaborations between geologists and physicists have been founded. As the data analysis is still mostly done by particle physicists, much of the know-how is concentrated in particle physics and specialised geophysics institutes. SMAUG (Sim- ulation for Muons and their Applications UnderGround), a toolbox consisting of several modules that cover the various aspects of data analysis in a muon tomographic experiment, aims at providing access to a structured data analysis frame- work. The goal of this contribution is to make muon tomog- raphy more accessible to a broader geoscientific audience. In this study, we show how a comprehensive geophysical model can be built from basic physics equations. The emerging un- certainties are dealt with by a probabilistic formulation of the inverse problem, which is finally solved by a Monte Carlo Markov chain algorithm. Finally, we benchmark the SMAUG results against those of a recent study, which, however, have been established with an approach that is not easily accessi- ble to the geoscientific community. We show that they reach identical results with the same level of accuracy and preci- sion.
