Molecular markers are indis­pensable tools for determining the genetic variation and biodiversity with high levels of accuracy and repro­ducibility. These markers are mainly classified into two types; mitochondrial and nuclear markers. The widely used mitochondrial DNA markers with decreasing order of conserved sequences are 12S rDNA > 16S rDNA > cytochrome b > control region (CR); thus the 12S rDNA is highly conserved and the CR is highly variable. The most commonly used nuclear markers for DNA fingerprinting include random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD), amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) and microsatellites. This short review narrates the application of these molecular markers for biodiversity analysis of wildlife animals.

Bidirectional wireless communication is employed in various smart grid components such as smart meters and control and monitoring applications where security is vital. The Trusted Third Party (TTP) and wireless connectivity between the smart meter and the third party in the key management-based encryption techniques for the smart grid are expected to be totally trustworthy and dependable. In a wired/wireless medium, however, a man-in-the-middle may seek to disrupt, monitor and manipulate the network, or simply execute a replay attack, revealing its vulnerability. Recognizing this, this study presents a novel authentication management (model) comprised of two layer security schema. The first layer implements an efficient novel encryption method for secure data exchange between meters and control center with the help of two partially trusted simple servers (constitutes the TTP). In this setting, one server handles the data encryption between the meter and control center/central database, and the other server administers the random sequence of data transmission. The second layer monitors and verifies exchanged data packets among smart meters. It detects abnormal packets from suspicious sources. To implement this node-to-node authentication, One class support vector machine algorithm is proposed which takes advantages of the location information as well as the data transmission history (node identification, packet size, and data transmission frequency). This schema secures data communication, and imposes a comprehensive privacy throughout the system without considerably extending the complexity of the conventional key management scheme.

This study investigates the vulnerability of dc microgrid systems to cyber threats, focusing on false data injection attacks (FDIAs) affecting sensor measurements. These attacks pose significant risks to equipment, generation units, controllers, and human safety. To address this vulnerability, we propose a novel solution utilizing a nonlinear autoregressive network with exogenous input (NARX) observer. Trained to differentiate between normal conditions, load changes, and cyber-attacks, the NARX network estimates dc currents and voltages. The system initially operates without FDIAs to collect data for training NARX networks, followed by online deployment to estimate output dc voltages and currents of distributed energy resources. An attack mitigation strategy using a proportional–integral controller aligns NARX output with actual converter output, generating a counter-attack signal to nullify the attack impact. Comparative analysis with other AI-based methods is conducted, demonstrating the effectiveness of our approach. MATLAB simulations validate the method's performance, with real-time validation using OPAL-RT further confirming its applicability.

By integrating advanced technologies and data-driven systems in smart grids, there has been a significant revolution in the energy distribution sector, bringing a new era of efficiency and sustainability. Nevertheless, with this advancement comes vulnerability, particularly in the form of cyber threats, which have the potential to damage critical infrastructure. False data injection attacks are among the threats to the cyber–physical layer of smart grids. False data injection attacks pose a significant risk, manipulating the data in the control system layer to compromise the grid’s integrity. An early detection and mitigation of such cyberattacks are crucial to ensuring the smart grid operates securely and reliably. In this research paper, we demonstrate different machine learning classification models for detecting false data injection attacks, including the Extra Tree, Random Forest, Extreme Gradient Boosting, Logistic Regression, Decision Tree, and Bagging Classifiers, to secure the integrity of smart grids. A comprehensive dataset of various attack scenarios provides insights to explore and develop effective detection models. Results show that the Extra Tree, Random Forest, and Extreme Gradient Boosting models’ accuracy in detecting the attack outperformed the existing literature, an achieving accuracy of 98%, 97%, and 97%, respectively.

The increasing interests and recent advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning have significantly accelerated the development of novel techniques for the state estimation of batteries in electrified vehicles’ battery management systems (BMSs). Determining the remaining capacity among the several BMS states is crucial for ensuring the safe and stable functioning of an electric vehicle. This paper proposes an adaptive estimator for the remaining capacity of lithium-ion batteries, leveraging a Genetic Algorithm (GA)-tuned random forest (RF) regressor. The estimator is designed to function effectively under varying thermal conditions. The optimization of critical parameters, namely, the number of estimators (n-estimators) and the minimum number of samples per leaf (min-samples-leaf), is a focal point of this study to enhance model accuracy and robustness. The model effectively captures the battery’s dynamic behavior and inherent non-linearity. The Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) achieved during testing demonstrate promising accuracy and superior prediction. The results demonstrated significant improvements in state of charge (SOC) estimation accuracy. The proposed GA-optimized RF model achieved an MAE of 0.0026 at 25 °C and 0.0102 at −20 °C, showing a 41.37% to 50% reduction in the MAE compared to traditional random forest models without GA optimization. The RMSE was also reduced by 18.57% to 31.01% across the tested temperature range. These improvements highlight the model’s ability to accurately estimate the SOC in varying thermal conditions.

Direct infusion–high-resolution mass spectrometry (DI-HRMS) allows for rapid profiling of complex mixtures of metabolites in blood, cerebrospinal fluid, tissue samples and cultured cells. Here, we present a DI-HRMS method suitable for the rapid determination of metabolic fluxes of isotopically labeled substrates in cultured cells and organoids. We adapted an automated annotation pipeline by selecting labeled adducts that best represent the majority of 13C and/or 15N-labeled glycolytic and tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediates as well as a number of their derivatives. Furthermore, valine, leucine and several of their degradation products were included. We show that DI-HRMS can determine anticipated and unanticipated alterations in metabolic fluxes along these pathways that result from the genetic alteration of single metabolic enzymes, including pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDHA1) and glutaminase (GLS). In addition, it can precisely pinpoint metabolic adaptations to the loss of methylmalonyl-CoA mutase in patient-derived liver organoids. Our results highlight the power of DI-HRMS in combination with stable isotopically labeled compounds as an efficient screening method for fluxomics.

Global Value Chain (GVC) participation has significantly influenced production patterns and specializations across various industry sectors globally. This study employs a quantitative approach using the GVC Participation Index database specific to the agricultural sector and the Global Food Security Index (GFSI) from 2012 to 2021, analyzed using Beta Regression. The results reveal that GVC participation significantly impacts food security. Simple forward and complex backward GVC participation positively influence food security, whereas forward complex participation has a negative effect. Food security varies significantly by region and income level, with Europe & Central Asia and North America, as well as high-income countries, exhibiting better food security. In contrast, South and East Asia and lower-middle-income countries show lower food security. These findings underscore the necessity for targeted policies and interventions to enhance GVC participation based on regional and income-specific conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, we address the challenge of detecting and mitigating cyber attacks in the distributed cooperative control of islanded AC microgrids, with a particular focus on detecting False Data Injection Attacks (FDIAs), a significant threat to the Smart Grid (SG). The SG integrates traditional power systems with communication networks, creating a complex system with numerous vulnerable links, making it a prime target for cyber attacks. These attacks can lead to the disclosure of private data, control network failures, and even blackouts. Unlike machine learning-based approaches that require extensive datasets and mathematical models dependent on accurate system modeling, our method is free from such dependencies. To enhance the microgrid's resilience against these threats, we propose a resilient control algorithm by introducing a novel trustworthiness parameter into the traditional cooperative control algorithm. Our method evaluates the trustworthiness of distributed energy resources (DERs) based on their voltage measurements and exchanged information, using Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence to dynamically adjust control actions. We validated our approach through simulations on both the IEEE-34 bus feeder system with eight DERs and a larger microgrid with twenty-two DERs. The results demonstrated a detection accuracy of around 100%, with millisecond range mitigation time, ensuring rapid system recovery. Additionally, our method improved system stability by up to almost 100% under attack scenarios, showcasing its effectiveness in promptly detecting attacks and maintaining system resilience.
