2. DEMIS: A Threat Model for Selectively Encrypted Visual Surveillance Data

Abstract

The monitoring of individuals/objects has become increasingly possible in recent years due to the convenience of integrated cameras in many devices. Due to the important moments or activities of people captured by these devices, it has made it a great asset for attackers to launch attacks against by exploiting the weaknesses in these devices. Different studies proposed na\"ive/selective encryption of the captured visual data for safety but despite the encryption, an attacker can still access or manipulate such data. This paper proposed a novel threat model, DEMIS which helps analyse the threats against such encrypted videos. The paper also examines the attack vectors that can be used for threats and the mitigation that will reduce or prevent the attack. For experiments, firstly the data set is generated by applying selective encryption on the Regions-of-interests (ROI) of the tested videos using the image segmentation technique and Chacha20 cipher. Secondly, different types of attacks, such as inverse, lowercase, uppercase, random insertion, and malleability attacks were simulated in experiments to show the effects of the attacks, the risk matrix, and the severity of these attacks. Abstract

A high level of transparency in reported research is critical for several reasons, such as ensuring an acceptable level of trustworthiness and enabling replication. Transparency in qualitative research permits the identification of specific circumstances which are associated with findings and observations. Thus, transparency is important for the repeatability of original studies and for explorations of the transferability of original findings. There has been no investigation into levels of transparency in reported technology education research to date. With a position that increasing transparency would be beneficial, this article presents an analysis of levels of transparency in contemporary technology education research studies which employed interviews within their methodologies, and which were published within the "International Journal of Technology and Design Education and Design and Technology Education: An International Journal" (n = 38). The results indicate room for improvement, especially in terms of documenting researcher positionality, determinations of data saturation, and how power imbalances were managed. A discussion is presented on why it is important to improve levels of transparency in reported studies, and a guide on areas to make transparent is presented for qualitative and quantitative research.

11. SecureCam: Selective Detection and Encryption Enabled Application for Dynamic Camera Surveillance Videos

Abstract

Using dynamic surveillance cameras for security has significantly increased the privacy concerns for captured individuals. Malicious users may misuse these videos by performing Replay and/or Man-in-the-Middle attacks during storage or recording over the network. Considering these risks, this paper proposes an effective security application SecureCam based on selective detection (focused moving objects) and protection using encryption. For object detection, this paper implements a novel low computational unsupervised learning algorithm, i.e., Motion-Fusion (MF) for more precise motion detection in the mobile camera videos. After that, selective encryption (SE) is applied by the lightweight Chacha20 cipher to the detected video parts. Proposed SecureCam is extensively evaluated based on performance analysis, security analysis and computational complexity. For object detection, the comparative evaluation shows that the MF algorithm outperforms traditional state-of-the-art dense optical flow (DOF) algorithm with an average (mean) difference increase: in the accuracy of 54%; and in the precision of 42% making it computationally effective for such videos. The visual results with 21% encryption space ratio (ESR) indicate that the videos are sufficiently protected against identification. Overall comparative evaluation with existing approaches also affirm the significance and utility of proposed SecureCam for Internet of Multimedia Things (IoMT) environment.
