Abstract

In this contribution, the shape coexistence phenomenon near the proton sub-shell closure at Z=40 is analyzed. Particular emphasis is placed on extracting the nuclear deformation values by examining experimental B(E2) transition rates and observing how the kinematic moment of inertia evolves in these nuclei. Abstract

Strawberries in California are grown in specific coastal areas where land is scarce and climate change threatens future production. Strawberry growers are under pressure to adopt sustainable production strategies such as crop rotation, but this practice requires more land than back-to-back planting. The objectives of this research were to quantify the rate of crop rotation across the three main strawberry producing regions in California (Ventura, Santa Maria, and Monterey Bay), and evaluate geographic and edaphic influences on crop rotation. All strawberry fields in the main strawberry producing regions of California were identified by satellite imagery and manual inspection for the years 2017 through 2022. ArcGIS Pro was used to outline each strawberry field and compare among years to determine the period between successive strawberry plantings. Edaphic characteristics and shapefiles for surrounding fields were retrieved from public datasets. The three regions significantly differed in their rates of crop rotation. On average, 95, 52, and 25% of strawberry hectares were rotated each year in the Monterey Bay, Santa Maria, and Ventura regions, respectively. Shorter rotation lengths were associated with reduced distance from the ocean and soil with a higher percentage of sand. Based on 2 years of disease surveys, fields infested with Macrophomina phaseolina tended to be further inland than fields infested with Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. fragariae in the Monterey Bay region. This study determined that distance from the ocean and soil texture are associated with crop rotation lengths in California strawberry production. Enough land may be available in the Santa Maria and Monterey Bay regions for growers to lengthen crop rotations, but water quality, social networks, and financial considerations that were outside the scope of this study are likely to limit the ability for strawberry growers to maximize the duration of crop rotations.

Abstract

The standard Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model undergoes a second-order ground-state quantum phase transition (QPT) and an excited-state quantum phase transition (ESQPT). The inclusion of an anharmonic term in the LMG Hamiltonian gives rise to a second ESQPT that alters the static properties of the model [Phys. Rev. E 106, 044125 (2022)]. In the present work, the dynamical implications associated to this new ESQPT are analyzed. For that purpose, a quantum quench protocol is defined on the system Hamiltonian that takes an initial state, usually the ground state, into a complex excited state that evolves on time. The impact of the new ESQPT on the time evolution of the survival probability and the local density of states after the quantum quench, as well as on the Loschmidt echoes and the microcanonical out-of-time-order correlator (OTOC) are discussed. The anharmonity-induced ESQPT, despite having a different physical origin, has dynamical consequences similar to those observed in the ESQPT already present in the standard LMG model.

Abstract

A digital quantum simulation for the extended Agassi model is proposed using a quantum platform with eight trapped ions. The extended Agassi model is an analytically solvable model including both short range pairing and long range monopole-monopole interactions with applications in nuclear physics and in other many-body systems. In addition, it owns a rich phase diagram with different phases and the corresponding phase transition surfaces. The aim of this work is twofold: on one hand, to propose a quantum simulation of the model at the present limits of the trapped ions facilities and, on the other hand, to show how to use a machine learning algorithm on top of the quantum simulation to accurately determine the phase of the system. Concerning the quantum simulation, this proposal is scalable with polynomial resources to larger Agassi systems. Digital quantum simulations of nuclear physics models assisted by machine learning may enable one to outperform the fastest classical computers in determining fundamental aspects of nuclear matter., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures. A Quantum Phase Transition (QPT) in a simple model that describes the coexistence of atoms and diatomic molecules is studied. The model, that is briefly discussed, presents a second order ground state phase transition in the thermodynamic (or large particle number) limit, changing from a molecular condensate in one phase to an equilibrium of diatomic molecules-atoms in coexistence in the other one. Usual markers for this phase transition are the ground state energy and the expectation value of the number of atoms (or, alternatvely, the number of molecules) in the ground state. In this work, other markers for the QPT as the Inverse Participation Ratio (IPR) and, particularly, the R\'enyi entropy are analysed and proposed as QPT markers. 21. Bank regulation, supervision and financial stability : an empirical study

Abstract

This PhD thesis explores the relationship between banking regulations and supervision, and financial stability. In terms of the financial stability, I focus on the banking industry and, particularly, on the role of foreign banks in the transmission of shocks through the lending channel. Additionally, I investigate the banking stability through several indicators of a bank's stand-alone risk, such as the bank's z-score and the Merton's (1974) distance to default, among others. With respect to the banking supervision and regulations, I examine two underexplored topics: the role of supervisory cooperation agreements and bank culture for banking stability. Therefore, this study contributes to the banking literature by expanding the empirical evidence in three ways. These are briefly mentioned below. Firstly, Chapter 2 expands the recent studies on bank lending (e.g., Allen et al. 2017; Adams-Kane et al., 2017) by investigating how lending behaviour of foreign banks is affected through cross-border banking supervision during the global financial crisis. I use a hand-collected data on bilateral and multilateral cooperation agreements at the country-level from central banks and supervisory authorities' websites, and apply a difference-in-differences (DiD) methodology. I find that a statistically significant relationship exists and that lending by foreign banks decreased in Central and Eastern Europe and Latin America during the crisis. In particular, the foreign banks whose home and host countries supervisors have an agreement on banking supervision reduced their lending less, between 3.6% and 9.9%, than the banks that did not have such type of agreement amid the crisis. This mitigating effect is positively related to the level of supervisory power and the number of on-site inspections, and negatively associated with the level of supervisory consolidation. My findings have important policy implications. My results suggest that to mitigate the international transmission of shocks, the national and international regulators need to enhance supervisory coordination and cooperation among central banks, supervisory authorities, and banking institutions. Secondly, Chapter 3 expands the existing literature by examining how board attributes such as gender diversity, CEO power and CEO age influence the bank risk-taking behaviour through the bank's culture. To investigate the research question in this chapter, I create a culture dictionary using 5,813 quarterly earnings call transcripts and a machine learning technique (following Li et al., 2021a). I score the five cultural values of innovation, quality, integrity, respect and teamwork for a sample of 180 US BHCs over the period 2006-2019. To answer the research question, I employ a system of simultaneous equations using the three-stage least squares (3SLS) estimation method among others panel data estimators (i.e., Ordinary Least Square, 2-Stage Least Square and GMM-system estimator). The findings suggest that banks with cultures of innovation, quality, and integrity help mitigating the default risk for the banks. In addition, the results show that boards with higher gender diversity are positively associated with the innovation, quality, and integrity. It means that more gender-diverse boards exhibit and foster these cultural values in banks I also provide evidence of an economically significant influence of CEO age and CEO power on these culture variables. Thus, this study reveals that the board characteristics of banks influence their risk mitigation through the culture of innovation, quality, and integrity. My analysis in this chapter contributes to the practitioners, policy makers and regulators as it provides evidence to increase the gender diversity in banks, which in turn would improve the bank culture resulting in better bank stability. Finally, Chapter 4 examines whether and how bank culture helps to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on banks' default risk. As mentioned before, I use 2,328 quarterly earnings calls transcripts to measure the corporate culture for a sample of 161 US BHCs over the pre-pandemic period. The number of earnings calls transcripts used in this chapter differs from Chapter 3 due to differences in the sample period. Using a difference-in-differences (DiD) approach, I show that, although the COVID-19 shock increased banks' default risk, banks with a strong culture exhibit a lower default risk than their peers without a strong culture. In the next step, I group the five cultural values underlying a strong culture into two subcultures: technology-oriented culture comprised of innovation and quality, and people-oriented culture comprised of integrity, respect and teamwork. I find that banks with a strong technology-oriented culture show a lower default risk than their counterparts during the pandemic crisis. Among the three components of people-oriented culture, I find that only integrity helps to mitigate the impact of COVID-19. The results suggest that supervisors' assessment of culture should focus on encouraging and aligning technology-oriented cultural values with a bank's strategic goals.

23. A digital quantum simulation of the Agassi model

Abstract

A digital quantum simulation of the Agassi model from nuclear physics is proposed and analyzed. The proposal is worked out for the case with four different sites. Numerical simulations and analytical estimations are presented to illustrate the feasibility of this proposal with current technology. The proposed approach is fully scalable to a larger number of sites. The use of a quantum correlation function as a probe to explore the quantum phases by quantum simulating the time dynamics, with no need of computing the ground state, is also studied. Evidence is given showing that the amplitude of the time dynamics of a correlation function in this quantum simulation is linked to the different quantum phases of the system. Abstract

Most of the therapeutic systems developed for managing chronic skin wounds lack adequate mechanical and hydration properties, primarily because they rely on a single component. This study addresses this issue by combining organic and inorganic materials to obtain hybrid films with enhanced mechanical behavior, adhesion, and fluid absorption properties. To that aim, chitosan/hydrolyzed collagen blends were mixed with halloysite/antimicrobial nanohybrids at 10% and 20% (w/w) using glycerin or glycerin/polyethylene glycol-1500 as plasticizers. The films were characterized through the use of Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and electron microscopy. The mechanical properties were evaluated macroscopically using tensile tests, and at a nanoscale through atomic force microscopy (AFM) and nanoindentation. Thermodynamic studies were conducted to assess their hydrophilic or hydrophobic character. Additionally, in vitro cytocompatibility tests were performed on human keratinocytes. Results from FTIR, TGA, AFM and electron microscopy confirmed the hybrid nature of the films. Both tensile tests and nanomechanical measurements postulated that the nanohybrids improved the films' toughness and adhesion and optimized the nanoindentation properties. All nanohybrid-loaded films were hydrophilic and non-cytotoxic, showcasing their potential for skin wound applications given their enhanced performance at the macro- and nanoscale.
