Abstract: This paper presents the Planck Multi-frequency Catalogue of Non-thermal (i.e. synchrotron-dominated) Sources (PCNT) observed between 30 and 857 GHz by the ESA Planck mission. This catalogue was constructed by selecting objects detected in the full mission all-sky temperature maps at 30 and 143 GHz, with a signal-to-noise ratio (S/N)> 3 in at least one of the two channels after filtering with a particular Mexican hat wavelet. As a result, 29 400 source candidates were selected. Then, a multi-frequency analysis was performed using the Matrix Filters methodology at the position of these objects, and flux densities and errors were calculated for all of them in the nine Planck channels. This catalogue was built using a different methodology than the one adopted for the Planck Catalogue of Compact Sources (PCCS) and the Second Planck Catalogue of Compact Sources (PCCS2), although the initial detection was done with the same pipeline that was used to produce them. The present catalogue is the first unbiased, full-sky catalogue of synchrotron-dominated sources published at millimetre and submillimetre wavelengths and constitutes a powerful database for statistical studies of non-thermal extragalactic sources, whose emission is dominated by the central active galactic nucleus. Together with the full multi-frequency catalogue, we also define the Bright Planck Multi-frequency Catalogue of Non-thermal Sources (PCNTb), where only those objects with a S/N > 4 at both 30 and 143 GHz were selected. In this catalogue 1146 compact sources are detected outside the adopted Planck GAL070 mask; thus, these sources constitute a highly reliable sample of extragalactic radio sources. We also flag the high-significance subsample (PCNThs), a subset of 151 sources that are detected with S/Na, >, 4 in all nine Planck channels, 75 of which are found outside the Planck mask adopted here. The remaining 76 sources inside the Galactic mask are very likely Galactic objects.

Abstract: The Second Planck Catalogue of Compact Sources is a list of discrete objects detected in single-frequency maps from the full duration of the Planck mission and supersedes previous versions. It consists of compact sources, both Galactic and extragalactic, detected over the entire sky. Compact sources detected in the lower frequency channels are assigned to the PCCS2, while at higher frequencies they are assigned to one of two subcatalogues, the PCCS2 or PCCS2E, depending on their location on the sky. The first of these (PCCS2) covers most of the sky and allows the user to produce subsamples at higher reliabilities than the target 80% integral reliability of the catalogue. The second (PCCS2E) contains sources detected in sky regions where the diffuse emission makes it difficult to quantify the reliability of the detections. Both the PCCS2 and PCCS2E include polarization measurements, in the form of polarized flux densities, or upper limits, and orientation angles for all seven polarization-sensitive Planck channels. The improved data-processing of the full-mission maps and their reduced noise levels allow us to increase the number of objects in the catalogue, improving its completeness for the target 80% reliability as compared with the previous versions, the PCCS and the Early Release Compact Source Catalogue (ERCSC).

Abstract: The European Space Agency's Planck satellite, which is dedicated to studying the early Universe and its subsequent evolution, was launched on 14 May 2009. It scanned the microwave and submillimetre sky continuously between 12 August 2009 and 23 October 2013. In February 2015, ESA and the Planck Collaboration released the second set of cosmology products based ondata from the entire Planck mission, including both temperature and polarization, along with a set of scientific and technical papers and a web-based explanatory supplement. This paper gives an overview of the main characteristics of the data and the data products in the release, as well as the associated cosmological and astrophysical science results and papers. The data products include maps of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect, diffuse foregrounds in temperature and polarization, catalogues of compact Galactic and extragalactic sources (including separate catalogues of Sunyaev-Zeldovich clusters and Galactic cold clumps), and extensive simulations of signals and noise used in assessing uncertainties and the performance of the analysis methods. The likelihood code used to assess cosmological models against the Planck data is described, along with a CMB lensing likelihood. Scientific results include cosmological parameters derived from CMB power spectra, gravitational lensing, and cluster counts, as well as constraints on inflation, non-Gaussianity, primordial magnetic fields, dark energy, and modified gravity, and new results on low-frequency Galactic foregrounds.

4. Forecasts on the contamination induced by unresolved point sources in primordial non-Gaussianity beyond Planck

Abstract: In this paper we present forecasts of the contamination on different shapes of the primordial non-Gaussianity fnl parameter -- detectable on future Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) high--resolution anisotropy maps -- produced by unresolved extragalactic point sources at frequencies of cosmological interest (45--375 GHz). We consider two scenarios: an ideal (noiseless) mission and a possible future space-borne satellite, with instrumental characteristics similar to the ones proposed for the Cosmic Origins Explorer (COrE). The local, equilateral, orthogonal and flat shapes are considered in both temperature (intensity) and polarized emission data. The angular power spectrum and bispectrum of extragalactic point sources are estimated by state-of-the-art models of source number counts. The impact of all the most relevant (far--IR and radio selected) source populations on these shapes at COrE frequencies is studied. The results of this analysis show that unresolved extragalactic point sources should not induce a very relevant non-Gaussian signal in the frequency range 100--200 GHz, thus not preventing a correct estimate of the CMB primordial fnl parameter. Polarization information allows one to significantly reduce the error--bars in the fnl parameter and the bias induced by unresolved sources and, hence, to widen the range of frequencies for fnl studies. On the contrary, at nu < 100 GHz or nu > 225 GHz, important non-Gaussian deviations in CMB anisotropy maps are expected due to unresolved extragalactic sources., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables. 5. A Bayesian technique for the detection of point sources in CMB maps

Abstract: The detection and flux estimation of point sources in cosmic microwave background (CMB) maps is a very important task in order to clean the maps and also to obtain relevant astrophysical information. In this paper we propose a maximum a posteriori (MAP) approach detection method in a Bayesian scheme which incorporates prior information about the source flux distribution, the locations and the number of sources. We apply this method to CMB simulations with the characteristics of the Planck satellite channels at 30, 44, 70 and 100 GHz. With a similar level of spurious sources, our method yields more complete catalogues than the matched filter with a 5 sigma threshold. 6. Filter Design for the Detection/Estimation of the Modulus of a Vector. Application to Polarization Data

Abstract: We consider a set of M images, whose pixel intensities at a common point can be treated as the components of a M-dimensional vector. We are interested in the estimation of the modulus of such a vector associated to a compact source. For instance, the detection/estimation of the polarized signal of compact sources immersed in a noisy background is relevant in some fields like Astrophysics. We develop two different techniques, one based on the Maximum Likelihood Estimator (MLE) applied to the modulus distribution, the modulus filter (ModF) and other based on prefiltering the components before fusion, the filtered fusion (FF), to deal with this problem. We present both methods in the general case of M images and apply them to the particular case of three images (linear plus circular polarization). Numerical simulations have been performed to test these filters considering polarized compact sources immersed in stationary noise. The FF performs better than the ModF in terms of errors in the estimated amplitude and position of the source, especially in the low signal-to-noise case. We also compare both methods with the direct application of a matched filter (MF) on the polarization data. 7. Polarization of the WMAP Point Sources

Abstract: The detection of polarized sources in the WMAP 5-year data is a very difficult task. The maps are dominated by instrumental noise and only a handful of sources show up as clear peaks in the Q and U maps. Optimal linear filters applied at the position of known bright sources detect with a high level of significance a polarized flux P from many more sources, but estimates of P are liable to biases. Using a new technique, named the "filtered fusion technique", we have detected in polarization, with a significance level greater than 99.99% in at least one WMAP channel, 22 objects, 5 of which, however, do not have a plausible low radio frequency counterpart and are therefore doubtful. Estimated polarized fluxes P < 400 mJy at 23 GHz were found to be severely affected by the Eddington bias. The corresponding polarized flux limit for Planck/LFI at 30 GHz, obtained via realistic simulations, is 300 mJy. We have also obtained statistical estimates of, or upper limits to the mean polarization degrees of bright WMAP sources at 23, 33, 41, and 61 GHz, finding that they are of a few percent., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures. 8. Detection/estimation of the modulus of a vector. Application to point source detection in polarization data

Abstract: Given a set of images, whose pixel values can be considered as the components of a vector, it is interesting to estimate the modulus of such a vector in some localised areas corresponding to a compact signal. For instance, the detection/estimation of a polarized signal in compact sources immersed in a background is relevant in some fields like astrophysics. We develop two different techniques, one based on the Neyman-Pearson lemma, the Neyman-Pearson filter (NPF), and another based on prefiltering-before-fusion, the filtered fusion (FF), to deal with the problem of detection of the source and estimation of the polarization given two or three images corresponding to the different components of polarization (two for linear polarization, three including circular polarization). For the case of linear polarization, we have performed numerical simulations on two-dimensional patches to test these filters following two different approaches (a blind and a non-blind detection), considering extragalactic point sources immersed in cosmic microwave background (CMB) and non-stationary noise with the conditions of the 70 GHz \emph{Planck} channel. The FF outperforms the NPF, especially for low fluxes. We can detect with the FF extragalactic sources in a high noise zone with fluxes >= (0.42,0.36) Jy for (blind/non-blind) detection and in a low noise zone with fluxes >= (0.22,0.18) Jy for (blind/non-blind) detection with low errors in the estimated flux and position., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: The Planck Catalogue of Compact Sources (PCCS) is the catalogue of sources detected in the first 15 months of Planck operations, the "nominal" mission. It consists of nine single-frequency catalogues of compact sources, both Galactic and extragalactic, detected over the entire sky. The PCCS covers the frequency range 30-857 GHz with higher sensitivity (it is 90% complete at 180 mJy in the best channel) and better angular resolution (from 32.88′ to 4.33′) than previous all-sky surveys in this frequency band. By construction its reliability is >80% and more than 65% of the sources have been detected in at least two contiguous Planck channels. In this paper we present the construction and validation of the PCCS, its contents and its statistical characterization.

10. Non-blind catalogue of extragalactic point sources from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) first 3--year survey data

Abstract: We have used the MHW2 filter to obtain estimates of the flux densities at the WMAP frequencies of a complete sample of 2491 sources, mostly brighter than 500 mJy at 5 GHz, distributed over the whole sky excluding a strip around the Galactic equator (b < 5 degrees). After having detected 933 sources above the 3 sigma level in the MHW2 filtered maps - our New Extragalactic WMAP Point Source (NEWPS_3sigma) Catalogue - we are left with 381 sources above 5 sigma in at least one WMAP channel, 369 of which constitute our NEWPS_5sigma catalogue. It is remarkable to note that 98 (i.e. 26%) sources detected above 5 sigma are `new', they are not present in the WMAP catalogue. Source fluxes have been corrected for the Eddington bias. Our flux density estimates before such correction are generally in good agreement with the WMAP ones at 23 GHz. At higher frequencies WMAP fluxes tend to be slightly higher than ours, probably because WMAP estimates neglect the deviations of the point spread function from a Gaussian shape. On the whole, above the estimated completeness limit of 1.1 Jy at 23 GHz we detected 43 sources missed by the blind method adopted by the WMAP team. On the other hand, our low-frequency selection threshold left out 25 WMAP sources, only 12 of which, however, are 5 sigma detections and only 3 have fluxes S at 23 GHz > 1.1 Jy. 11. Wavelets on the sphere. Application to the detection problem

Abstract: A new method is presented for the construction of a natural continuous wavelet transform on the sphere. It incorporates the analysis and synthesis with the same wavelet and the definition of translations and dilations on the sphere through the spherical harmonic coefficients. We construct a couple of wavelets as an extension of the flat Mexican Hat Wavelet to the sphere and we apply them to the detection of sources on the sphere. 12. Statistical analysis of undetected point sources in cosmic microwave background maps

Abstract: Cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropies follow a Gaussian statistical distribution in the standard inflationary model, but there are non-Gaussian contributions due to astrophysical foregrounds. The detection of the non-Gaussian signal due to extragalactic point sources and its distinction from the possible intrinsic non-Gaussianity is an issue of great importance in CMB analysis. The Mexican Hat Wavelet Family (MHWF), which has been proved very useful for the detection of extragalactic point sources, is applied here to the study of non-Gaussianity due to point sources in CMB maps. We carry out simulations of CMB maps with the characteristics of the forthcoming Planck mission at 70 and 100 GHz and filter them with the MHWF. By comparing the skewness and kurtosis of simulated maps with and without point sources, we are able to detect clearly the non-Gaussian signal due to point sources for flux limits as low as 0.4 Jy (70 GHz) and 0.3 Jy (100 GHz). The second and third members of the MHWF perform better in this respect than the Mexican Hat Wavelet (MHW1) and much better than the Daubechies 4 wavelet. We have also estimated the third order, $K_3$, and fourth order, $K_4$, cumulants produced by point sources at these Planck channels by means of a fit with the MHWF. The average relative errors with respect to the real values are below 12% for fluxes down to 0.6 Jy (70 GHz) and 0.4 Jy (100 GHz). Abstract: We study the detection of extragalactic point sources in two-dimensional flat simulations for all the frequencies of the forthcoming ESA's Planck mission. In this work we have used the most recent available templates of the microwave sky: as for the diffuse Galactic components and the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich clusters we have used the ``Plank Reference Sky Model''; as for the extragalactic point sources, our simulations - which comprise all the source populations relevant in this frequency interval - are based on up-to-date cosmological evolution models for sources. To consistently compare the capabilities of different filters for the compilation of the - hopefully - most complete blind catalogue of point sources, we have obtained three catalogues by filtering the simulated sky maps with: the Matched Filter (MF), the Mexican Hat Wavelet (MHW1) and the Mexican Hat Wavelet 2 (MHW2), the first two members of the MHW Family. For the nine Planck frequencies we show the number of real and spurious detections and the percentage of spurious detections at different flux detection limits as well as the completeness level of the catalogues and the average errors in the estimation of the flux density of detected sources. Allowing a 5 % of spurious detections, we obtain the following number of detections by filtering with the MHW2 an area equivalent to half of the sky: 580 (30 GHz), 342 (44 GHz), 341 (70 GHz), 730 (100 GHz), 1130 (143 GHz), 1233 (217 GHz), 990 (353 GHz), 1025 (545 GHz) and 3183 (857 GHz). Our current results indicate that the MF and the MHW2 yield similar results, whereas the MHW1 performs worse in some cases and especially at very low fluxes. This is a relevant result, because we are able to obtain comparable results with the well known Matched Filter and with this specific wavelet, the MHW2, which is much easier to implement and use., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures. 14. The Mexican Hat Wavelet Family. Application to point source detection in CMB maps

Abstract: We propose a new detection technique in the plane based on an isotropic wavelet family. This family is naturally constructed as an extension of the Gaussian-Mexican Hat Wavelet pair and for that reason we call it the Mexican Hat Wavelet Family (MHWF). We show the performance of these wavelets when dealing with the detection of extragalactic point sources in cosmic microwave background (CMB) maps: a very important issue within the most general problem of the component separation of the microwave sky. Specifically, flat two-dimensional simulations of the microwave sky comprising all astrophysical components plus instrumental noise have been analyzed for the channels at 30, 44 and 70 GHz of the forthcoming ESA's Planck mission Low Frequency Instrument (LFI). We adopt up-to-date cosmological evolution models of extragalactic sources able to fit well the new data on high-frequency radio surveys and we discuss our current results on point source detection by comparing them with those obtained using the Mexican Hat Wavelet (MHW) technique, which has been already proven a suitable tool for detecting point sources. By assuming a 5% reliability level, the first new members of the MHWF, at their ``optimal scale'', provide three point source catalogues on half of the sky (at galactic latitude |b|> 30) at 30, 44 and 70 GHz of 639, 387 and 340 extragalactic sources, respectively. The corresponding flux detection limits are 0.38, 0.45 and 0.47 Jy . By using the same simulated sky patches and at the same frequencies as before, the MHW at its optimal scale provides 543, 322 and 311 sources with flux detection limits of 0.44, 0.51 and 0.50 Jy, respectively (5% reliability level). These results show a clear improvement when we use the new members of the MHWF and, in particular, the MHW2 with respect to the MHW., Comment: 11 pages and 4 figures. Abstract: We review two powerful methods to test the Gaussianity of the cosmic microwave background (CMB): one based on the distribution of spherical wavelet coefficients and the other on smooth tests of goodness-of-fit. The spherical wavelet families proposed to analyse the CMB are the Haar and the Mexican Hat ones. The latter is preferred for detecting non-Gaussian homogeneous and isotropic primordial models containing some amount of skewness or kurtosis. Smooth tests of goodness-of-fit have recently been introduced in the field showing some interesting properties. 16. Goodness-of-fit tests of Gaussianity: constraints on the cumulants of the MAXIMA data

Abstract: In this work, goodness-of-fit tests are adapted and applied to CMB maps to detect possible non-Gaussianity. We use Shapiro-Francia test and two Smooth goodness-of-fit tests: one developed by Rayner and Best and another one developed by Thomas and Pierce. The Smooth tests test small and smooth deviations of a prefixed probability function (in our case this is the univariate Gaussian). Also, the Rayner and Best test informs us of the kind of non-Gaussianity we have: excess of skewness, of kurtosis, and so on. These tests are optimal when the data are independent. We simulate and analyse non-Gaussian signals in order to study the power of these tests. These non-Gaussian simulations are constructed using the Edgeworth expansion, and assuming pixel-to-pixel independence. As an application, we test the Gaussianity of the MAXIMA data. Results indicate that the MAXIMA data are compatible with Gaussianity. Finally, the values of the skewness and kurtosis of MAXIMA data are constrained by |S| \le 0.035 and |K| \le 0.036 at the 99% confidence level., Comment: New Astronomy Reviews, in press

17. Goodness-of-Fit Tests to study the Gaussianity of the MAXIMA data

Abstract: Goodness-of-Fit tests, including Smooth ones, are introduced and applied to detect non-Gaussianity in Cosmic Microwave Background simulations. We study the power of three different tests: the Shapiro-Francia test (1972), the uncategorised smooth test developed by Rayner and Best(1990) and the Neyman's Smooth Goodness-of-fit test for composite hypotheses (Thomas and Pierce 1979). The Smooth Goodness-of-Fit tests are designed to be sensitive to the presence of ``smooth'' deviations from a given distribution. We study the power of these tests based on the discrimination between Gaussian and non-Gaussian simulations. Non-Gaussian cases are simulated using the Edgeworth expansion and assuming pixel-to-pixel independence. Results show these tests behave similarly and are more powerful than tests directly based on cumulants of order 3, 4, 5 and 6. We have applied these tests to the released MAXIMA data. The applied tests are built to be powerful against detecting deviations from univariate Gaussianity. The Cholesky matrix corresponding to signal (based on an assumed cosmological model) plus noise is used to decorrelate the observations previous to the analysis. 18. COBE-DMR constraints on the nonlinear coupling parameter: a wavelet based method

Abstract: Nonlinearity introduced in slow-roll inflation will produce weakly non-Gaussian CMB temperature fluctuations. We have simulated non-Gaussian large scale CMB maps (including COBE-DMR constraints) introducing an additional quadratic term in the gravitational potential.The amount of nonlinearity being controlled by the so called nonlinear coupling parameter f_{nl}. An analysis based on the Spherical Mexican Hat wavelet was applied to these and to the COBE-DMR maps. Skewness values obtained at several scales were combined into a Fisher discriminant. Comparison of the Fisher discriminant distributions obtained for different nonlinear coupling parameters with the COBE-DMR values, sets a constraint of abs(f_{nl})<1100 at the 68% confidence level. This new constraint being tighter than the one previously obtained by using the bispectrum by Komatsu et al. (2002)., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

19. The performance of spherical wavelets to detect non-Gaussianity in the CMB sky

Abstract: We investigate the performance of spherical wavelets in discriminating between standard inflationary models (Gaussian) and non-Gaussian models. For the later we consider small perturbations of the Gaussian model in which an artificially specified skewness or kurtosis is introduced through the Edgeworth expansion. By combining all the information present in all the wavelet scales with the Fisher discriminant, we find that the spherical Mexican Hat wavelets are clearly superior to the spherical Haar wavelets. The former can detect levels of the skewness and kurtosis of ~1% for 33' resolution, an order of magnitude smaller than the later. Also, as expected, both wavelets are better for discriminating between the models than the direct consideration of moments of the temperature maps. Abstract: The spherical Mexican Hat wavelet is introduced in this paper, with the aim of testing the Gaussianity of the Cosmic Microwave Background temperature fluctuations. Using the information given by the wavelet coefficients at several scales, we have performed several statistical tests on the COBE-DMR maps to search for evidence of non-Gaussianity. Skewness, kurtosis, scale-scale correlations (for two and three scales) and Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests indicate that the COBE-DMR data are consistent with a Gaussian distribution. We have extended the analysis to compare temperature values provided by COBE-DMR data with distributions (obtained from Gaussian simulations) at each pixel and at each scale. The number of pixels with temperature values outside the 95% and the 99% is consistent with that obtained from Gaussian simulations, at all scales. Moreover, the extrema values for COBE-DMR data (maximum and minimum temperatures in the map) are also consistent with those obtained from Gaussian simulations., Comment: to be published in MNRAs

21. Isotropic Wavelets: a Powerful Tool to Extract Point Sources from CMB Maps

Abstract: It is the aim of this paper to introduce the use of isotropic wavelets to detect and determine the flux of point sources appearing in CMB maps. The most suited wavelet to detect point sources filtered with a Gaussian beam is the Mexican Hat. An analytical expression of the wavelet coefficient obtained in the presence of a point source is provided and used in the detection and flux estimation methods presented. For illustration the method is applied to two simulations (assuming Planck Mission characteristics) dominated by CMB (100 GHz) and dust (857 GHz) as these will be the two signals dominating at low and high frequency respectively in the Planck channels. We are able to detect bright sources above 1.58 Jy at 857 GHz (82% of all sources) and above 0.36 Jy at 100 GHz (100% of all) with errors in the flux estimation below 25%. The main advantage of this method is that nothing has to be assumed about the underlying field, i.e. about the nature and properties of the signal plus noise present in the maps. This is not the case in the detection method presented by Tegmark and Oliveira-Costa 1998. Both methods are compared producing similar results., Comment: 6 pages. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract: We consider the 2D wavelet transform with two scales to study sky maps of temperature anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB). We apply this technique to simulated maps of small sky patches of size 12.8 \times 12.8 square degrees and 1.5' \times 1.5' pixels. The relation to the standard approach, based on the cl's is established through the introduction of the scalogram. We consider temperature fluctuations derived from standard, open and flat-Lambda CDM models. We analyze CMB anisotropies maps plus uncorrelated Gaussian noise (uniform and non-uniform) at idfferent S/N levels. We explore in detail the denoising of such maps and compare the results with other techniques already proposed in the literature. Wavelet methods provide a good reconstruction of the image and power spectrum. 23. Wavelets Applied to CMB Maps: a Multiresolution Analysis for Denoising

Abstract: Analysis and denoising of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) maps are performed using wavelet multiresolution techniques. The method is tested on $12^{\circ}.8\times 12^{\circ}.8$ maps with resolution resembling the experimental one expected for future high resolution space observations. Semianalytic formulae of the variance of wavelet coefficients are given for the Haar and Mexican Hat wavelet bases. Results are presented for the standard Cold Dark Matter (CDM) model. Denoising of simulated maps is carried out by removal of wavelet coefficients dominated by instrumental noise. CMB maps with a signal-to-noise, $S/N \sim 1$, are denoised with an error improvement factor between 3 and 5. Moreover we have also tested how well the CMB temperature power spectrum is recovered after denoising. Abstract: The European Space Agency's Planck satellite, which is dedicated to studying the early Universe and its subsequent evolution, was launched on 14 May 2009. It scanned the microwave and submillimetre sky continuously between 12 August 2009 and 23 October 2013. In February 2015, ESA and the Planck Collaboration released the second set of cosmology products based ondata from the entire Planck mission, including both temperature and polarization, along with a set of scientific and technical papers and a web-based explanatory supplement. This paper gives an overview of the main characteristics of the data and the data products in the release, as well as the associated cosmological and astrophysical science results and papers. The data products include maps of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect, diffuse foregrounds in temperature and polarization, catalogues of compact Galactic and extragalactic sources (including separate catalogues of Sunyaev-Zeldovich clusters and Galactic cold clumps), and extensive simulations of signals and noise used in assessing uncertainties and the performance of the analysis methods. The likelihood code used to assess cosmological models against the Planck data is described, along with a CMB lensing likelihood. Scientific results include cosmological parameters derived from CMB power spectra, gravitational lensing, and cluster counts, as well as constraints on inflation, non-Gaussianity, primordial magnetic fields, dark energy, and modified gravity, and new results on low-frequency Galactic foregrounds.

Abstract: The Second Planck Catalogue of Compact Sources is a list of discrete objects detected in single-frequency maps from the full duration of the Planck mission and supersedes previous versions. It consists of compact sources, both Galactic and extragalactic, detected over the entire sky. Compact sources detected in the lower frequency channels are assigned to the PCCS2, while at higher frequencies they are assigned to one of two subcatalogues, the PCCS2 or PCCS2E, depending on their location on the sky. The first of these (PCCS2) covers most of the sky and allows the user to produce subsamples at higher reliabilities than the target 80% integral reliability of the catalogue. The second (PCCS2E) contains sources detected in sky regions where the diffuse emission makes it difficult to quantify the reliability of the detections. Both the PCCS2 and PCCS2E include polarization measurements, in the form of polarized flux densities, or upper limits, and orientation angles for all seven polarization-sensitive Planck channels. The improved data-processing of the full-mission maps and their reduced noise levels allow us to increase the number of objects in the catalogue, improving its completeness for the target 80% reliability as compared with the previous versions, the PCCS and the Early Release Compact Source Catalogue (ERCSC).

Abstract: This paper presents cosmological results based on full-mission Planck observations of temperature and polarization anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation. Our results are in very good agreement with the 2013 analysis of the Planck nominal-mission temperature data, but with increased precision. The temperature and polarization power spectra are consistent with the standard spatially-flat 6-parameter ΛCDM cosmology with a power-law spectrum of adiabatic scalar perturbations (denoted "base ΛCDM" in this paper). From the Planck temperature data combined with Planck lensing, for this cosmology we find a Hubble constant, H0 = (67.8 ± 0.9) km s-1Mpc-1, a matter density parameter Ωm = 0.308 ± 0.012, and a tilted scalar spectral index with ns = 0.968 ± 0.006, consistent with the 2013 analysis. Note that in this abstract we quote 68% confidence limits on measured parameters and 95% upper limits on other parameters. We present the first results of polarization measurements with the Low FrequencyInstrument at large angular scales. Combined with the Planck temperature and lensing data, these measurements give a reionization optical depth of τ = 0.066 ± 0.016, corresponding to a reionization redshift of \hbox{$z-{\rm re}=8.8{+1.7}-{-1.4}$}. These results are consistent with those from WMAP polarization measurements cleaned for dust emission using 353-GHz polarization maps from the High Frequency Instrument. We find no evidence for any departure from base ΛCDM in the neutrino sector of the theory; for example, combining Planck observations with other astrophysical data we find Neff = 3.15 ± 0.23 for the effective number of relativistic degrees of freedom, consistent with the value Neff = 3.046 of the Standard Model of particle physics. The sum of neutrino masses is constrained to â'mν < 0.23 eV. The spatial curvature of our Universe is found to be very close to zero, with | ΩK | < 0.005. Adding a tensor component as a single-parameter extension to base ΛCDM we find an upper limit on the tensor-to-scalar ratio of r0.002< 0.11, consistent with the Planck 2013 results and consistent with the B-mode polarization constraints from a joint analysis of BICEP2, Keck Array, and Planck (BKP) data. Adding the BKP B-mode data to our analysis leads to a tighter constraint of r0.002 < 0.09 and disfavours inflationarymodels with a V(φ) φ2 potential. The addition of Planck polarization data leads to strong constraints on deviations from a purely adiabatic spectrum of fluctuations. We find no evidence for any contribution from isocurvature perturbations or from cosmic defects. Combining Planck data with other astrophysical data, including Type Ia supernovae, the equation of state of dark energy is constrained to w =-1.006 ± 0.045, consistent with the expected value for a cosmological constant. The standard big bang nucleosynthesis predictions for the helium and deuterium abundances for the best-fit Planck base ΛCDM cosmology are in excellent agreement with observations. We also constraints on annihilating dark matter and onpossible deviations from the standard recombination history. In neither case do we find no evidence for new physics. The Planck results for base ΛCDM are in good agreement with baryon acoustic oscillation data and with the JLA sample of Type Ia supernovae. However, as in the 2013 analysis, the amplitude of the fluctuation spectrum is found to be higher than inferred from some analyses of rich cluster counts and weak gravitational lensing. We show that these tensions cannot easily be resolved with simple modifications of the base ΛCDM cosmology. Apart from these tensions, the base ΛCDM cosmology provides an excellent description of the Planck CMB observations and many other astrophysical data sets.

Abstract: © 2016 ESO. The European Space Agency's Planck satellite, which is dedicated to studying the early Universe and its subsequent evolution, was launched on 14 May 2009. It scanned the microwave and submillimetre sky continuously between 12 August 2009 and 23 October 2013. In February 2015, ESA and the Planck Collaboration released the second set of cosmology products based ondata from the entire Planck mission, including both temperature and polarization, along with a set of scientific and technical papers and a web-based explanatory supplement. This paper gives an overview of the main characteristics of the data and the data products in the release, as well as the associated cosmological and astrophysical science results and papers. The data products include maps of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect, diffuse foregrounds in temperature and polarization, catalogues of compact Galactic and extragalactic sources (including separate catalogues of Sunyaev-Zeldovich clusters and Galactic cold clumps), and extensive simulations of signals and noise used in assessing uncertainties and the performance of the analysis methods. The likelihood code used to assess cosmological models against the Planck data is described, along with a CMB lensing likelihood. Scientific results include cosmological parameters derived from CMB power spectra, gravitational lensing, and cluster counts, as well as constraints on inflation, non-Gaussianity, primordial magnetic fields, dark energy, and modified gravity, and new results on low-frequency Galactic foregrounds.

Abstract: The Planck Catalogue of Compact Sources (PCCS) is the catalogue of sources detected in the first 15 months of Planck operations, the "nominal" mission. It consists of nine single-frequency catalogues of compact sources, both Galactic and extragalactic, detected over the entire sky. The PCCS covers the frequency range 30-857 GHz with higher sensitivity (it is 90% complete at 180 mJy in the best channel) and better angular resolution (from 32.88′ to 4.33′) than previous all-sky surveys in this frequency band. By construction its reliability is >80% and more than 65% of the sources have been detected in at least two contiguous Planck channels. Abstract: © 2016 ESO. The Second Planck Catalogue of Compact Sources is a list of discrete objects detected in single-frequency maps from the full duration of the Planck mission and supersedes previous versions. It consists of compact sources, both Galactic and extragalactic, detected over the entire sky. Compact sources detected in the lower frequency channels are assigned to the PCCS2, while at higher frequencies they are assigned to one of two subcatalogues, the PCCS2 or PCCS2E, depending on their location on the sky. The first of these (PCCS2) covers most of the sky and allows the user to produce subsamples at higher reliabilities than the target 80% integral reliability of the catalogue. The second (PCCS2E) contains sources detected in sky regions where the diffuse emission makes it difficult to quantify the reliability of the detections. Both the PCCS2 and PCCS2E include polarization measurements, in the form of polarized flux densities, or upper limits, and orientation angles for all seven polarization-sensitive Planck channels. The improved data-processing of the full-mission maps and their reduced noise levels allow us to increase the number of objects in the catalogue, improving its completeness for the target 80% reliability as compared with the previous versions, the PCCS and the Early Release Compact Source Catalogue (ERCSC).

Abstract: The European Space Agency's Planck satellite, which is dedicated to studying the early Universe and its subsequent evolution, was launched on 14 May 2009. It scanned the microwave and submillimetre sky continuously between 12 August 2009 and 23 October 2013. In February 2015, ESA and the Planck Collaboration released the second set of cosmology products based ondata from the entire Planck mission, including both temperature and polarization, along with a set of scientific and technical papers and a web-based explanatory supplement. This paper gives an overview of the main characteristics of the data and the data products in the release, as well as the associated cosmological and astrophysical science results and papers. The data products include maps of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect, diffuse foregrounds in temperature and polarization, catalogues of compact Galactic and extragalactic sources (including separate catalogues of Sunyaev-Zeldovich clusters and Galactic cold clumps), and extensive simulations of signals and noise used in assessing uncertainties and the performance of the analysis methods. The likelihood code used to assess cosmological models against the Planck data is described, along with a CMB lensing likelihood. Scientific results include cosmological parameters derived from CMB power spectra, gravitational lensing, and cluster counts, as well as constraints on inflation, non-Gaussianity, primordial magnetic fields, dark energy, and modified gravity, and new results on low-frequency Galactic foregrounds.

It consists of compact sources, both Galactic and extragalactic, detected over the entire sky. Compact sources detected in the lower frequency channels are assigned to the PCCS2, while at higher frequencies they are assigned to one of two subcatalogues, the PCCS2 or PCCS2E, depending on their location on the sky. The first of these (PCCS2) covers most of the sky and allows the user to produce subsamples at higher reliabilities than the target 80% integral reliability of the catalogue. The second (PCCS2E) contains sources detected in sky regions where the diffuse emission makes it difficult to quantify the reliability of the detections. Abstract: © 2016 ESO.The European Space Agency's Planck satellite, which is dedicated to studying the early Universe and its subsequent evolution, was launched on 14 May 2009. It scanned the microwave and submillimetre sky continuously between 12 August 2009 and 23 October 2013. In February 2015, ESA and the Planck Collaboration released the second set of cosmology products based ondata from the entire Planck mission, including both temperature and polarization, along with a set of scientific and technical papers and a web-based explanatory supplement. This paper gives an overview of the main characteristics of the data and the data products in the release, as well as the associated cosmological and astrophysical science results and papers. The data products include maps of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect, diffuse foregrounds in temperature and polarization, catalogues of compact Galactic and extragalactic sources (including separate catalogues of Sunyaev-Zeldovich clusters and Galactic cold clumps), and extensive simulations of signals and noise used in assessing uncertainties and the performance of the analysis methods. The likelihood code used to assess cosmological models against the Planck data is described, along with a CMB lensing likelihood. Scientific results include cosmological parameters derived from CMB power spectra, gravitational lensing, and cluster counts, as well as constraints on inflation, non-Gaussianity, primordial magnetic fields, dark energy, and modified gravity, and new results on low-frequency Galactic foregrounds.

Abstract: The Planck Catalogue of Compact Sources (PCCS) is the catalogue of sources detected in the first 15 months of Planck operations, the >nominal> mission. It consists of nine single-frequency catalogues of compact sources, both Galactic and extragalactic, detected over the entire sky. The PCCS covers the frequency range 30-857 GHz with higher sensitivity (it is 90% complete at 180 mJy in the best channel) and better angular resolution (from 32.88′ to 4.33′) than previous all-sky surveys in this frequency band. By construction its reliability is >80% and more than 65% of the sources have been detected in at least two contiguous Planck channels.
