SrFe$_{12}$O$_{19}$ (SFO) films grown on Si (100) substrates by radio-frequency magnetron sputtering have been characterized in terms of composition, structural and magnetic properties by a combination of microscopy, diffraction and spectroscopy techniques. M\"ossbauer spectroscopy was used to determine the orientation of the films magnetization, which was found to be controlled by both the sputtering power and the thickness of the films. Additionally, the coupling between the SFO films and a deposited cobalt overlayer was studied by means of synchrotron-based spectromicroscopy techniques. A structural coupling at the SFO/Co interface is suggested to account for the expetimental observations. - Abstract
Thin films of silicon carbide (SiC) on Si (100) and SrTiO (100) substrates have been grown by nanosecond pulsed laser deposition (PLD) with a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser operating at the wavelengths of 1064, 532 and 266 nm. The deposits obtained consisted of smooth and uniform layers of amorphous SiC, free of holes and cracks, with thicknesses in the range of 30–100 nm and average roughness substantially lower than 1 nm. The role of laser wavelength and of substrate temperature (300 K vs. 1025 K) on morphology, crystallinity and composition of the deposits was assessed. The films were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, micro-Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In addition, optical emission spectroscopy was employed to evaluate the characteristics of the ablation plasma and its correlation with the film growth.

- Abstract
The control of chemical, morphological, textural and magnetic properties developed in magnetic activated carbons (MACs) from industrial food waste, was achieved. The process parameters involved in a sustainable and optimized one-step activation route, based on the circular economy model, played an important role and its influence was studied, offering interesting and outstanding results. Magnetite crystals were formed on the MACs surface obtained from 400 °C to 800 °C while other iron species, such as metallic iron and iron carbides, were formed only at 800° C. Acid washing favored the mineral matter removal and the presence of iron species was drastically reduced in acid-washed MACs, mainly the iron species originated at 800 °C. Water-washed MACs presented better magnetic response at high temperatures (confirmed by XRD, FTIR, Raman, Mössbauer spectroscopy and VSM characterization techniques). High BET surface area (≈ 822 m/g) and a large micropore volume (≈ 0.30 cm/g), were reached by acid washed MACs at 800 °C. The obtained MACs were fundamentally microporous, but some mesoporosity was also observed when activating agent/precursor mass ratio (1:1) is used. It can be concluded that a MACs strategic design was reached with the objective of removing specific pollutants in multiple environmental applications.

These properties make SiC a promising material for high-temperature, high-power and high-frequency electronic devices as well as for optoelectronic such as solar cells, image sensors, gas sensors and photodiodes, just to cite a few. Thin films of SiC on Si (100) and SrTiO3 (100) substrates were grown by nanosecond pulsed laser deposition (PLD) at the wavelengths of 1064, 532 and 266 nm using a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. Upon irradiation for two hours at a repetition rate of 10 Hz and a distance target-substrate of 4 cm, deposits consisted of smooth and uniform layers, holes and cracks free, with average roughness ¿ 1 nm and with 20 to 100 nm thicknesses as determined by atomic force microscopy in tapping mode. The effect of laser irradiation wavelength, laser fluence and the temperature of the substrate (300 K vs. 1025 K) on the morphology, composition and crystallinity of the deposits was determined. Deposits were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, micro-Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to characterize their crystallinity and composition. Additionally, the nanomechanical properties of the deposited films and the photoluminescence were evaluated.

IBERTRIVA 2019 X Iberian Conference on Tribology – IBERTRIB, XI Iberian Vacuum Conference - RIVA, Seville, Spain,June 26-28, Magnets are used in a variety of applications, such as generators, magnetic recording media, components in RF and microwave devices. However, many of these magnets contain s rare earths, critical elements whose extraction is environmentally harmful and that present price volatility risks. Their replacement by cheaper and more environmentally friendly materials is therefore sought. In our case, we have focused on magnetically hard strontium hexaferrite (SrFe 12O19, SFO) as the base for alternative permanent magnets (Figure 1a). The atomic arrangement of this ferrite results in a high magnetocrystalline anisotropy and a coercive field, however, its magnetization is moderate (1). It is well known that the coupling between a magnetically hard and soft material improved magnetization while avoiding a high cost in coercitivity loss (2). However, results have been disappointing so far as structural and geometrical limitations make it extremely challenging to fabricate. In this work, we aim at further understanding the magnetic coupling at hard -soft interfaces involving ferrites, for which we have deposited soft iron and cobalt metals on top of SrFe12O19 thin films with controlled easy-axis of magnetization. SFO thin films have been obtained by RF magnetron sputtering at 260W followed by a subsequent annealing in air of 850ºC. Their structure and composition was characterized by Raman spectroscospy (Figure 1b), Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy and low-energy electron microscopy (LEEM). We have grown the magnetically soft layer by molecular-beam epitaxy and we have analyzed the resulting bilayer system through photoemission electron microscopy, LEEM and vibrating-sample magnetometry. MECAME / GFSM 2019, Montpellier, 19 to 23 may 2019 .-- In honour of Dr Jean-Claude Jumas (Institut Charles Gerhardt, CNRS, University of Montpellier, France). -- https://mecame-gfsm2019.irb.hr/, Strontium ferrite (SFO, SrFe12O19) is a ferrite employed for permanent magnets due to its high magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Since its discovery in the mid-20th century, this hexagonal ferrite has become an increasingly important material both commercially and technologically, finding a variety of uses and applications. Its structure can be considered a sequence of alternating spinel (S) and rocksalt (R) blocks. All the iron cations are in the Fe3+ oxidation state and it has a ferrimagnetic configuration with five different cationic environments for the iron (three octahedral sites, a tetraedrical site and a bipiramidal site)[1,2]. We have studied the properties of SrFe 12O19 in the shape of platelets, up to several micrometers in width, and tens of nanometers thick, synthesized by a hydrothermal method. We have characterized the structural and magnetic properties of these platelets by Mössbauer spectroscopy, x-ray transmission microscopy (TMX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), vibrating-sample magnetometry (VSM), x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), x-ray circular magnetic dichroism (XMCD) and photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM). To the best of our knowledge this is the first time that the x-ray absorption spectra at the Fe L 2,3 edges of this material in its pure form have been reported. The Mössbauer results recorded from these platelets both in the electron detection and transmission modes have helped to understand the iron magnetic moments determined by XMCD (Fig.1). The experimental results have been complemented with multiplet calculations aimed at reproducing the observed XAS and XMCD spectra at the Fe L 2,3 absorption edge, and by density functional theory (DFT) calculations to reproduce the oxygen K- absorption edge. Finally the domain pattern measured in remanence is in good agreement with micromagnetic simulations [3].

34th European Conference on Surface Science which will take place at the Scandinavian Congress Centre, Aarhus, Denmark, from the 26thto the 31st of August 2018. .-http://conferences.au.dk/ecoss2018/ .-https://conferences.au.dk/ecoss2018/welcome ECOSS is a traditional annual meeting directed jointly by the Surface Science Division of the International Union for Vacuum Science, Technique and Applications (IUVSTA) and the Surface and Interface Section of the European Physical Society (EPS)., Text Antiferromagnetic (AFM) oxides are strong candidates for spintronic applications due to a combination of interesting features: robust against perturbation due to magnetic fields, no stray fields, ultrafast dynamics and large magneto-transport effects. We demonstrate the growth of ultrathin micrometric islands of AFM transition metal monoxides with different compositions and lateral sizes. Combining oxygen-assisted molecular beam epitaxy on a metallic substrate with in situ Low Energy Electron Microscopy it is possible to optimize the growth parameters for each composition and thickness between a few nanometers and tens of nanometers. In the same instrument, we determine the surface atomic structure of each island by microspot Low Energy Electron Diffraction, as well as their chemistry and magnetization by synchrotron based X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy and X-Ray Magnetic Linear Dichroism spectromicroscopy.

The study of non-precious metal catalysts (NPMCs) as alternatives to platinum for oxygen reduction is crucial if the use of fuel cells is to become more widespread. Among NPMCs, pyrolyzed catalysts (Fe-N-C) are particularly promising in both basic and acid media. The characterization of active sites and the understanding of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) mechanism are crucial for the design of active Fe-N-C catalysts. In this study, we have tested the involvement of the metal centre in the ORR process at pH 13 for two pyrolyzed iron porphyrins. The pyrolyzed catalysts present a FeN4 active site structure similar to that of the porphyrin precursors. Regarding the mechanism, we have found evidence for the crucial role of the Fe(II) centres. There is a direct relation between the Fe(III)/(II) redox transition of the catalysts and the onset potential of the ORR, showing that the electrogeneration of Fe(II) from Fe(III)OH– controls the catalysis. The poisoning of iron centres with CN− induces a decrease in the ORR activity. However, the onset potential for H2O2 generation remains unchanged. The Tafel plots show two different slopes at high and low overpotentials. Based on these results, we propose two different mechanisms, both dependent on the redox potential of the catalysts and the FeO2 binding energy.

- Abstract
Currently the use of magnets is extended to a variety of devices, such as generators, magnetic recording media, components for RF and microwaves. However, many of these magnets contain rare earths, critical elements whose extraction is environmentally harmful and that present price volatility risks. Their replacement by cheaper and more environmentally friendly materials is therefore sought. The alternative that we propose is the manufacture of magnets by means of combinations of oxides and metals. Specifically, the oxide to be used is strontium hexaferrite (SrFe12O19, SFO). This material has a high magnetocrystalline anisotropy and a high coercive field, but has a moderate saturation magnetization [1]. Improvements in saturation magnetization have been detected without a large decrease in coercivity by combining a magnetically hard material (oxide) with another material magnetically soft (ferromagnetic metal) [2]. Therefore, we are studying the magnetic coupling of a bilayer system model comprises a thin film of SFO with a layer of cobalt on top. To stimulate the magnetic coupling between the two layer we were looking for the magnetization of the hard material to be in-plane. Thus we have tried several power conditions in the magnetron device (from 60W to 260W). The Mössbauer results showed that this was achieved at 260W plus a subsequent annealing in air at 850ºC (Fig. 1). The structure and composition of the SFO layer have been characterized by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) combined with X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), (Fig.2a). We have grown the magnetically soft layer by molecular-beam epitaxy and we have analyzed the resulting bilayer system through PEEM XAS and XMCD measurements (Fig. 2b).

- Abstract
A novel thermochemical process based on a single step was optimized to obtain magnetic activated carbons from an industrial biomass waste. Anhydrous iron chloride was used as an activating agent and mixed directly with the chestnut shell waste. The effect of the activation temperature (220-800 °C) on the chemical, morphological, textural, and magnetic properties of the materials was studied. The results demonstrated the presence of different iron compounds depending on the activation temperature set as well as their influence on morphological and textural development of the magnetic activated carbons (BET specific surface area, S up to 568 m g, total pore volume, V, up to 0.294 cm g vs 1 m g and 0.007 cm g, respectively, for the raw biomass waste). The techniques employed, especially Mössbauer spectroscopy, showed relative contributions of the different iron compounds (magnetite, maghemite, metallic iron, and so on) in the materials. The higher activation temperature (800 °C) favored the formation of metal Fe and iron carbide. Additionally, the magnetic properties measured by vibrating sample magnetometry confirmed the coexistence of different ferromagnetic phases with the remanent magnetization, M, (up to 3.88 emu/g) and coercivity, H, (up to 140 Oe), being larger as the activation temperature increases. A higher activation temperature favored the development and evolution toward other iron compounds, while at low temperature, 220 °C, the presence of these compounds were null, and their behavior resembled the results obtained for the original biomass waste.

Cu0(core)-Au0(shell) (Cu@Au) bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) synthesized under microwave-assisted heating were interrogated for surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-active substrates. NPs characterization, by XRD, XPS and UV/vis spectroscopy, showed the formation of self-assembled particles with the occurrence of electron transfer from Cu to Au and the absence of CuxO. TEM and AF4 demonstrated NPs with a mean diameter of 4.7 nm. Despite the low LSPR shown by small nanoparticles (<10 nm diameter), our Cu@Au NPs showed enhanced SERS effect, demonstrated by the calculated scattering signal enhancement factor (3 × 105), which may be related to electromagnetic coupling. Selected examples of analytes of interest, including some biomolecules, were studied to demonstrate the versatility of our Cu@Au NPs as SERS-active substrates.

Platelets of strontium hexaferrite (SrFeO, SFO), up to several micrometers in width, and tens of nanometers thick have been synthesized by a hydrothermal method. They have been studied by a combination of structural and magnetic techniques, with emphasis on Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray absorption based-measurements including spectroscopy and microscopy on the iron-L edges and the oxygen-K edge, allowing us to establish the differences and similarities between our synthesized nanostructures and commercial powders. The Mössbauer spectra reveal a greater contribution of iron tetrahedral sites in platelets in comparison to pure bulk material. For reference, high-resolution absorption and dichroic spectra have also been measured both from the platelets and from pure bulk material. The O-K edge has been reproduced by density functional theory calculations. Out-of-plane domains were observed with 180° domain walls less than 20 nm width, in good agreement with micromagnetic simulations.

Cobalt ferrite is a mixed iron (III) and cobalt (II) oxide with a spinel-related structure. Our work is focused on understanding the growth of cobalt ferrite thin films on Si (100) by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The study is aimed at investigating the influence that deposition parameters such as substrate temperature, target-substrate distance or oxygen partial pressure have on the physicochemical properties of the obtained films and, in particular, in cation oxidation states, cation distribution and crystal quality.

12 O19 (SFO) films grown on Si (100) substrates by radio-frequency magnetron sputtering have been characterized in terms of composition, structural and magnetic properties by a combination of microscopy, diffraction and spectroscopy techniques. Mössbauer spectroscopy was used to determine the orientation of the films magnetization, which was found to be controlled by both the sputtering power and the thickness of the films. Additionally, the coupling between the SFO films and a deposited cobalt overlayer was studied by means of synchrotron-based spectromicroscopy techniques. A structural coupling at the SFO/Co interface is suggested to account for the expetimental observations. - Abstract
Observations show that glaciers around the world are in retreat and losing mass. Internationally coordinated for over a century, glacier monitoring activities provide an unprecedented dataset of glacier observations from ground, air and space. Glacier studies generally select specific parts of these datasets to obtain optimal assessments of the mass-balance data relating to the impact that glaciers exercise on global sea-level fluctuations or on regional runoff. In this study we provide an overview and analysis of the main observational datasets compiled by the World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS). The dataset on glacier front variations (similar to 42 000 since 1600) delivers clear evidence that centennial glacier retreat is a global phenomenon. Intermittent readvance periods at regional and decadal scale are normally restricted to a subsample of glaciers and have not come close to achieving the maximum positions of the Little Ice Age (or Holocene). Glaciological and geodetic observations (similar to 5200 since 1850) show that the rates of early 21st-century mass loss are without precedent on a global scale, at least for the time period observed and probably also for recorded history, as indicated also in reconstructions from written and illustrated documents. This strong imbalance implies that glaciers in many regions will very likely suffer further ice loss, even if climate remains stable.

Background: Enalapril maleate is the monoethyl ester prodrug of enalapril- at, an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor indicated in the management of essential and renovascular hypertension, and in the treatment of congestive heart failure and in asymptomatic patients with left ventricular dysfunction and an ejection fraction of >/=35%. Enalapril has little pharmacologic activity until hydrolyzed in vivo to enalaprilat.Objective: The aim of the present study was to compare the bioavailability and tolerability of 2 commercial brands (test and reference formulations) of enalapril tablets (20 mg), described as the rate and extent of absorption of the active moiety, to assess their bioequivalence.Methods: This single-dose, randomized, 2-way, open-label, crossover study in healthy volunteers aged 18 to 40 years was conducted at the Clinical Pharmacology Study Unit, Hospital Clínico San Carlos (Madrid, Spain). Subjects were randomized to receive (under fasting conditions) either the test or reference formulation of enalapril (20-mg tablet) at study period 1 and the opposite formulation at study period 2. Study periods were separated by a washout period of at least 7 days. During each study period, 15 plasma extractions were made to determine enalapril and enalaprilat plasma concentrations and to calculate the pharmacokinetic (PK) properties (maximal plasma drug concentration [C(max)], time to C[max] [T[max]], area under the plasma concentration-time curve [AUC] to the last measurable concentration [AUCt], AUC from time 0 to infinity [AUC(0-infinity)], mean residence time, and elimination half-life [t(l/2)]) of both. Physical examination, subject interview, laboratory analyses, electrocardiogram, and blood pressure (BP) were used to assess tolerability.Results: Twenty-four subjects were included in the study (12 men, 12 women; mean [SD] age, 22.8 [2.2] years [range, 19-30 years]). Of these, 1 subject (4.2%) withdrew from the study for personal reasons; thus, PK and statistical analyses included results from 23 subjects. No statistically significant sequence or period effect was found. T[max] was not statistically different between the 2 formulations, and the 90% CI calculated for T[max] for the difference of the medians was within the predefined range. The 90% CIs of the logarithmically transformed concentration-derived parameters (C([max]) AUC[t], and AUC[0-infinity]) also were within the predefined range; thus, the 2 formulations are considered bioequivalent. For both formulations, systolic and diastolic BPs showed significant reductions compared with baseline values (P < 0.05). Seven adverse effects were recorded, all of them transient and none of severe intensity.Conclusions: In this study of 2 commercial brands (test and reference formulations) of enalapril in healthy subjects, designed and conducted under Good Clinical Practice guidelines, a similar rate and extent of absorption for both formulations were found to be bioequivalent. Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interfaces (RPNIs) encompass neurotized muscle grafts employed for the purpose of amplifying peripheral nerve electrical signaling. The aim of this investigation was to undertake an analysis of the extant literature concerning animal models utilized in the context of RPNIs. A systematic review of the literature of RPNI techniques in animal models was performed in line with the PRISMA statement using the MEDLINE/PubMed and Embase databases from January 1970 to September 2023. Within the compilation of one hundred and four articles employing the RPNI technique, a subset of thirty-five were conducted using animal models across six distinct institutions. The majority (91%) of these studies were performed on murine models, while the remaining (9%) were conducted employing macaque models. The most frequently employed anatomical components in the construction of the RPNIs were the common peroneal nerve and the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscle. Through various histological techniques, robust neoangiogenesis and axonal regeneration were evidenced. Functionally, the RPNIs demonstrated the capability to discern, record, and amplify action potentials, a competence that exhibited commendable long-term stability. Different RPNI animal models have been replicated across different studies. Histological, neurophysiological, and functional analyses are summarized to be used in future studies.

Onset and duration of recumbency, response to venous catheterization and recovery quality were also assessed. Sedation and physiological variables were compared between treatments and within treatments compared to baseline (analysis of variance). Nonparametric data were analysed with the Friedman and Cochran's Q tests; p < 0.050., Results: Increased sedation was found at 15 (K0 and K1), 25 (all treatments) and 35 (K1) minutes compared with baseline. Sedation score, onset (3-12 minutes) and duration of recumbency (29-51 minutes) were similar between treatments. Recovery quality was considered acceptable in all cases. Response to tail clamping was inconsistent within treatments with no differences between them. None of the dogs responded to venous catheterization. There were no differences between treatments in physiological variables, except for PR which was higher in K2 than in K0. Oxygen supplementation was required in five and three dogs administered saline and ketamine, respectively., Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: The addition of 1 or 2 mg kg-1 of ketamine to methadone and dexmedetomidine combination did not enhance sedation or antinociception in healthy dogs. Objective: To evaluate the sedative effects of two doses of alfaxalone when added to a combination of dexmedetomidine and methadone injected intramuscularly (IM) in healthy Beagles., Study Design: Randomized, blinded, crossover, experimental study., Animals: A group of six adult Beagles., Methods: Dogs were sedated on three different occasions with IM dexmedetomidine (3 μg kg
-1 ) and methadone (0.3 mg kg-1 ) combined with two doses of alfaxalone (0.5 and 1 mg kg-1 ; A0.5 and A1, respectively) or saline (A0). Quality of sedation, response to tail clamping and rectal temperature were recorded at baseline, 5, 15, 25, 35 and 45 minutes. Pulse and respiratory rates, oxygen saturation of haemoglobin (SpO2 ) and noninvasive blood pressure (NIBP) were recorded every 5 minutes. Onset of sedation and duration of recumbency, response to venous catheterization and recovery quality were assessed. Physiological variables (analysis of variance) were analysed between treatments and within treatments compared with baseline (Student t test). Nonparametric data were analysed using Friedman and Cochran's Q tests. Significance was p < 0.05., Results: Sedation scores were significantly higher when alfaxalone was co-administered (area under the curve; p = 0.024, A0.5; p = 0.019, A1), with no differences between doses. Onset of sedation was similar, but duration of recumbency was longer in A0.5 than in A0 [median (minimum-maximum), 43 (35-54) versus 30 (20-47) minutes, p = 0.018], but not in A1. Response to venous catheterization and tail clamping, and quality of recovery (acceptable) presented no differences between treatments. A decrease in all physiological variables (compared with baseline) was observed, except for NIBP, with no differences between treatments. All dogs required oxygen supplementation due to reduced SpO2 ., Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: Adding alfaxalone to methadone and dexmedetomidine enhanced sedation and duration of recumbency. - Abstract
The anesthetic management in patients with subaortic stenosis and mitral valve disease should involve intensive monitoring and the anesthesiologist's main concern is to ensure oxygen delivery and tissue perfusion. Since anesthetic procedures in such patients are rare, there is no previous report about the anesthetic management. A 5.5-year old, 32-kg Boxer, suffering a severe heart disease due to a final stage subaortic stenosis and mitral insufficiency, was anesthetized for an ovariohysterectomy to remove an ovarian tumor that was producing high-volume ascites. Methadone (0.3 mg kg
-1 ) was administered intramuscularly (IM) for pre-anesthetic medication, etomidate (1.3 mg kg-1 ) and midazolam (0.2 mg kg-1 ) were used for the induction of anesthesia and after endotracheal intubation, anesthesia was maintained with sevoflurane vaporized in oxygen and air. Fentanyl (5-10 μg kg-1 h-1 ) and paracetamol (15 mg kg-1 ) were administered to improve analgesia. Previous persistent atrial fibrillation was refractory to medication (digoxin, diltiazem, and pimobendan) and continued during the anesthetic procedure. Dobutamine (1.5-5 μg kg-1 minute-1 ) helped to maintain mean arterial blood pressure above 60 mmHg. Epidural morphine (0.1 mg kg-1 ) and incisional bupivacaine (2 mg kg-1 ) were administered at the end of surgery to provide postoperative analgesia. - Abstract
Alfaxalone is a neuroactive steroid used as a general anaesthetic in several species including dogs, cats, rabbits and ferrets. It has a wide margin of safety and a similar anaesthetic profile to propofol. To increase its aqueous solubility, a new formulation with cyclodextrins has been marketed recently. The objective of this study was to evaluate the anaesthetic effect of several doses of alfaxalone alone, considering differences between sexes, and alfaxalone combined with dexmedetomidine and fentanyl in the rat administered by the intraperitoneal route. A total of 40 Sprague Dawley rats, involved in three studies, were used. Firstly, 25, 35 and 45 mg kg
-1 of alfaxalone alone were tested. In a second study, alfaxalone (25 mg kg-1 , females; 75 mg kg-1 , males) was combined with dexmedetomidine (0.05 mg kg-1 ). Finally, alfaxalone (20 mg kg-1 , females; 60 mg kg-1 , males) was combined with dexmedetomidine (0.05 mg kg-1 ) and fentanyl (0.1 mg kg-1 ). Times of onset and duration of anaesthesia, and analgesia, deemed as losing of withdrawal pedal reflex, were recorded. Alfaxalone alone produced a 2 - to 3-fold longer time of anaesthesia in females, although surgical anaesthesia was not achieved in either sex. The addition of dexmedetomidine and fentanyl to alfaxalone produced a similar time of analgesia as well as increased time of anaesthesia in both sexes. In conclusion, alfaxalone produces light anaesthesia in rats, and males required a higher dose. The combination with other sedatives or analgesics, such as dexmedetomidine or fentanyl, allows a more prolonged anaesthesia with analgesic effects, potentially suitable for invasive procedures.- Published

- Abstract
Objectives: The new European Union directives affecting clinical trials of medicines introduced important changes for Spain, leading to the publication of a Royal Decree regulating the conduct of clinical trials that went into effect in January 2016. The decree sets out the principles for complying with the EU directives, regulates the work of institutional review boards (IRBs) or ethics committees that review research proposals, introduces means to facilitate clinical research, and clarifies the role of the Spanish register of clinical trials, among other topics. This paper discusses the main changes that have been introduced, especially those intended to facilitate research, such as the new concepts of low intervention trial and noncommercial clinical research. These concepts may be particularly useful for clinical trials designed by emergency medicine physicians. We also comment on changes affecting vulnerable populations and the documents that must be presented to both the researchers' IRB and the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Care Products.

- Abstract
Background: A quantitative and qualitative assessment of reports on suspected adverse drug reactions (ARD) in Spanish medical literature was carried out., Materials and Methods: The periods analysed were 1972-1974, 1986-1988 and 1992-1994, and the medical journals were Anales de Medicina Interna, Medicina Clínica and Revista Clínica Española. We selected all articles including specific information on suspect ADR., Results: The percentage of articles has increased considerably (1972-1974: 2.1%, 1986-1988: 5.7%, and 1992-1994: 8.2%). In spite of this growth, the qualitative data studied have not significantly improved., Conclusions: It is necessary to device some mechanism in order to improve ADR reporting.
