[EN] In the most internal zone of the Variscan Orogen, a stack of ophiolites and (ultra)high-P belts hold evidence for c. 60 Myr (c. 400–340 Ma) of almost continuous metamorphism and accretion onto the continental margin of Gondwana. Subduction of the peri-Gondwanan lithosphere led to three successive (ultra)high-P metamorphic episodes prior to the continental collision between Gondwana and Laurussia that shaped Pangea. A first high-P, high-T metamorphic belt developed during subduction of a peri-Gondwanan magmatic arc in the Early Devonian. Related to this event is the ensuing opening of intra-Gondwana Middle Devonian oceanic basins, which rapidly closed leading to ophiolite accretion. The second high-P metamorphic episode is related to the formation of a serpentinitic mélange after the sequential subduction of oceanic and transitional crust during Middle Devonian time. Tectonic blocks of subducted crustal material recording high-P, low-T metamorphism were detached from the slab and incorporated into a low-viscosity channel developed between the downgoing slab and the mantle wedge. As convergence progressed, a Late Devonian high-P, low- to intermediate-T metamorphic belt developed due to subduction of the most external margin of Gondwana. Subsequently, the scenario switched to continental collision. In this context, Early Carboniferous intracontinental subduction of the Gondwanan foreland below the accretionary wedge triggered ultra-high-P metamorphism and ensuing exhumation via trans-lithospheric diapirism and doming up to the base of the accretionary wedge.

[EN] In the SW Iberian Massif, the Ossa-Morena Complex contains a stack of units of different origin and tectonothermal evolution. Individual terranes of the complex record a Cadomian history, traditionally interpreted in relation to the dynamics of a peri-Gondwanan volcanic arc. The interpretation of the Cadomian terranes is a key issue in the reconstruction of the Ediacaran margin of Gondwana in NW Africa. In the Mérida Massif, a mafic – ultramafic unit stacked between two units of continental or arc affinity is interpreted as a Cadomian ophiolite, the Mérida Ophiolite. Within it, mafic lithologies dated at c. 596 Ma (U-Pb in zircon) have calc-alkaline or tholeiitic affinity, indicating generation in a supra-subduction zone setting. The ophiolite shows a main event of Cadomian metamorphism (c. 590 Ma, U-Pb garnet dating) with a prograde P-T path and peak conditions at c. 700°C and 8 kbar. The mafic rocks show Nd isotopic compositions clearly different from those characteristics of the mafic rocks formed in the axial zone of the volcanic arc. Hence, the Mérida Ophiolite probably represents oceanic lithosphere of a back-arc basin, opened between the volcanic arc and the outer margin of Gondwana. Closure of the back-arc occurred during collision of the volcanic arc with the margin of Gondwana (starting at c. 590 Ma), which caused rapid accretion of the back-arc oceanic lithosphere beneath the arc and prograde metamorphism typical of subduction inception. The Mérida Ophiolite was finally obducted above the continental margin of Gondwana, presently preserved in gneissic unit piled beneath the ophiolite. Cadomian evolution of this peri-Gondwanan arc section continued with new tectonothermal events dated in the range 560–540 Ma that alternated with episodes of intense magmatic activity and preceded the collapse of the magmatic arc and its erosive levelling, followed by the generation of a new episode of intense magmatic activity in the arc and the unconformable depositio

[EN] Metamorphic basements are usually considered rigid and isotropic at a large scale. However, basements contain inherited weaknesses that may potentially accommodate superimposed contraction (e.g., fault reactivation), and that favor fold nucleation (e.g., penetrative foliations). If these conditions are met, what could be the factors that impede the development of basement folds or their recognition? Actual basement folding is rarely documented, especially for large dimensions. Here we provide a case example, discussed from the perspective of structural analysis of surface data and sustained by geophysical data. The basement of the Spanish-Portuguese Central System is defined by an Alpine mega-fold (Hiendelaencina Antiform) that trends parallel to this mountain range and affects the basement and its sedimentary cover, collectively. The wavelength of this fold matches or even surpasses the thickness of the crust that hosts it (36–41 km). The Moho under this mega-fold is displaced by an Alpine fault that accounts for incipient intraplate continental subduction. The topography of the mantle may reflect an up-warping compatible with the mega-fold observed on the surface. Mega-folding is observed in the hanging wall of the Berzosa Fault, which emerges as a SE-dipping, Variscan (Paleozoic), extensional fault reactivated as a basal decollement upon Alpine (Cenozoic) contraction. The mega-fold was formed after well-oriented planar anisotropies in the basement (foliation and bedding). The development of this fold was assisted by heterogeneous shearing (coeval thrusting) plus the buttressing effect of pre-existing, near-vertical, crustal-scale faults (Somolinos and Somosierra), which inhibited slip-upsection through the basal decollement (Berzosa Fault).

[EN] The c. 1000-m-thick pre-orogenic Devonian mainly metapelitic sequence of North Menorca Island shows a fairly complete stratigraphic succession. The rocks of this sequence indicate gradually increasing deeper marine conditions of sedimentation towards its uppermost levels. Furthermore, the obtained sedimentary characteristics resemble those related to a deep and narrow basin-associated deposit. Thin sills of Ti-augite-bearing alkaline gabbros occur within the Devonian sequence. The intensity of Variscan deformation increases downwards through the structure. According to the characteristics of the Devonian sequence and its location within the Variscan Orogen, a correlation with similar units located in the southern sectors of the Central Iberian Zone (Iberian Massif) is suggested. The Devonian metapelitic rocks have geochemical characteristics suggesting that they represent moderately recycled mature siliciclastic sediments, generated from erosion of distant source areas belonging to an upper continental crust. The relatively narrow range of variation observed in initial 143Nd/144Nd ratios supports a similar source for the Menorcan slates (0.51165–0.51182). However, a marked trend is observed in these isotope ratios, from lower values at the base of the stratigraphic column (minimum value of 0.511941) to higher values at the top (maximum value of 0.512131). The 147Sm/144Nd ratios vary between 0.1074 and 0.1238, within the range defined for siliciclastic rocks with felsic crustal provenance. The Nd model ages define a narrow range between 1496 Ma and 1754 Ma (Late Paleoproterozoic–Early Mesoproterozoic), and they are consistently younger up-section. These data rule out a provenance from the erosion of the West Africa Craton, as they are more compatible with a provenance from regions located in the Trans-Saharan Belt or Sahara Metacraton. [EN] The evolution of the Gondwana along the flank of the West African Craton was complex and is far from understood. Subduction-related activity along this margin spanned between c. 750 and 500 Ma. Sections close to African cratons record the earliest stages, while Autochthonous and Allochthonous domains of the Variscan Belt preserve the latest stages of the arc system, essentially between c. 540 and 500 Ma. The geochemistry of the Ediacaran-early Cambrian siliciclastic series deposited along this Cadomian active margin preserves the evolutionary history of their sources, which are related to activity in the arc and nearby continental areas. In this sense, the SW Iberian Massif (Ossa-Morena Complex) preserves a section of this Ediacaran-early Cambrian peri-Gondwanan arc. Its evolution can be tracked through the characterization of the subduction-related magmatism (including the Mérida Massif) and coeval metasedimentary record (Serie Negra Group and Malcocinado Formation) during a time interval spanning almost 100 m.y., from pre-602 Ma to at least c. 534 Ma. This study reveals that arc magmatism is closely linked with synorogenic deposition in a complex way so far unexplored. Arc recycling is revealed by the isotopic equivalence of synorogenic strata to the first magmatic event (pre-602 Ma), and by geochronological data of the arc-building pulses. The earliest magmatic pulses (c. 602–550 Ma) are characterized by significant crustal input, likely favoured by subduction erosion. Subsequently, magmatism evolved towards larger mantle involvement (c. 540–534 Ma), likely associated with progressive variation in the slab angle. These slab-mantle-upper plate interactions generated changes in the arc dynamics leading to an extensional setting with alkaline magmatism during the Cambrian. This review proposes a model of petrogenetic and geodynamic arc evolution between the Ediacaran and the Early Cambrian. The gathered data could improve the accuracy of future palaeogeographic

[EN] Exhumation of high-pressure (P) rocks may require a long path and multiple deformation phases. During this journey, late faults and folds can introduce changes to the primary tectonic stacking and lead to misleading conclusions regarding subduction polarity and plate reconstructions. This hypothesis has been tested positively via mapping and structural analysis in the eastern section of the Central Unit (Eastern Ossa–Morena Complex, Iberian Massif), which comprises Devonian high-P rocks subducted during the Variscan Orogeny. Following subduction beneath Gondwana, exhumation was assisted by in-sequence underthrusting of the continental crust, along with thinning of the overlying and formerly accreted crust. Convergence persisted and was accommodated by Gondwana-directed, out-of-sequence thrusts. Subsequent extension favoured erosion and basin inception during the Early Carboniferous, whereas further convergence produced late folding and faulting during Late Carboniferous sinistral transpression. Late faults duplicated the Devonian suture zone several times, producing a series of closely-spaced exposures of a single suture. The manner in which late faults affected the Devonian suture produced an outcome that could be mistaken for a collection of individual suture zones. Late faults may distort the primary relationships between upper and lower plates; however, they provide a geometry-based approach for restoring the primary geometry of suture zones.

[EN] The recent discovery of Ediacaran ophiolites in the SW Iberian Massif has made it possible to pinpoint the evolution of the Cadomian basement of Europe. The Calzadilla and Mérida ophiolites (gabbroic protoliths dated at c. 600 and 594 Ma, respectively) have geochemical characteristics typical of supra-subduction zone ophiolites. They are interpreted as originating during the initial opening of a forearc basin with boninitic magmatism (Calzadilla), followed by the formation of a back-arc basin with arc-tholeiites (Mérida). Widening of the back-arc led to the rifting and drifting of a section of the active continental margin (Cadomia). Closure of these oceanic domains initiated rapid contraction, culminating in the collision of Cadomia with Gondwana (c. 590–540 Ma). The application of a PANALESIS model to this palaeogeographic setting confirms the plausibility of Cadomian rifting and the likely opening of broad oceanic domains. It also confirms the final collision of Cadomia with Gondwana, although the synthetic and regional data disagree in the precise chronology of the convergence and collision of Cadomia with the West Africa Craton. This work shows that the evolution of the Cadomian basement is much more complex than traditionally considered.

[EN] Aspects of the evolution of the Pan-African–Cadomian arc have been recognized in several European massifs. The Ossa–Morena Complex (SW Iberian Massif) is one of the best-preserved sections of this palaeo-Gondwana margin. In this domain, recent studies suggest that arc magmatism followed a cyclical pattern during the Upper Ediacaran and Lower Cambrian. However, its initial and more mature stages remain unclear. Upper Ediacaran magmatism (c. 602 Ma) appears to be uninterrupted and driven by slab–mantle wedge–upper plate interactions. The early Paleozoic was a period of significant change along the Gondwana margin. In the Ossa–Morena Complex, the beginning of the Cambrian (c. 541 Ma) is marked by a strong unconformity over the Ediacaran basement, which is linked to destabilization of the arc. However, subduction-related magmatism continued with increasing mantle input, driving the geochemistry to more alkaline compositions. This paper summarizes the geochemical and isotopic evolution of the peri-Gondwana arc preserved in SW Iberia during this period. These results highlight shifts in geochemistry related to a higher slab angle during each magmatic episode, suggesting a tectonic switch toward an extensional regime in this section of the Gondwana margin.

The ultramafic rocks of the Herbeira Massif in the Cabo Ortegal Complex (NW Iberia) host chromitite bodies. The textural and compositional study of the host rocks and the chromitites classified them into: (1) Type-I chromitites, forming massive pods of intermediate-Cr chromite (Cr# = 0.60–0.66) within dunites; and (2) Type-II chromitites forming semi-massive horizons of high-Cr chromite (Cr# = 0.75–0.82) interlayered with dunites and pyroxenites. Minor and trace elements (Ga, Ti, Ni, Zn, Co, Mn, V and Sc) contents in the unaltered chromite cores from both types show patterns very similar to fore-arc chromitites, mimicked by the host dunites and pyroxenites. Calculated parental melt compositions suggest that Type-I chromitites crystallized from a melt akin to fore-arc basalt (FAB), while Type-II chromitites originated from a boninite-like parental melt. Both melts are characteristic of a fore-arc setting affected by extension during rollback subduction and have been related to the development of a Cambrian-Ordovician arc. These chromitites are extremely enriched in platinum-group elements (PGE), with bulk-rock PGE contents between 2,460 and 3,600 ppb. Also, the host dunites and pyroxenites exhibit high PGE contents (167 and 324 ppb, respectively), which are higher than those from the primitive mantle and global ophiolitic mantle peridotites. The PGE enrichment is expressed in positively-sloped chondrite-normalized PGE patterns, characterized by an enrichment in Pd-group PGE (PPGE: Rh, Pt and Pd) over the Ir-group PGE (IPGE: Os, Ir and Ru) and abundant platinum-group minerals (PGM) dominated by Rh-Pt-Pd phases (i.e. Rh-Ir-Pt-bearing arsenides and sulfarsenides, Pt-Ir-Pd-base-metal-bearing alloys, and Pt-Pd-bearing sulfides). The PGM assemblage is associated with base-metal sulfides (mostly pentlandite and chalcopyrite) and occurs at the edges of chromite or embedded within the interstitial (serpentinized) silicate groundmass. [EN] Neoproterozoic and Palaeozoic rocks of the Mérida Massif (SW Iberia) have been grouped into tectonostratigraphic units. Each unit is separated from the rest ones by either crustal-scale thrusts and/or extensional detachments. The lowermost unit (Magdalena Gneisses; lower plate) has continental crust affinity, and rest below a mafic-ultramafic ensemble, referred to as the Mérida Ophiolite (suture zone). The Serie Negra Group constitutes a unit with continental crust affinity (Upper Schist-Metagranitoid Unit; upper plate) located on top of the Mérida Ophiolite. A carbonate-rich succession (Carija Unit) occupies the uppermost structural position. Structural and previous isotopic data suggest that this suture zone was formed during the Cadomian Orogeny. Superimposed shortening during the late Palaeozoic formed upright to NE-verging folds and thrusts that affected this suture zone and juxtaposed it onto Ordovician strata during the Variscan Orogeny. The Mérida Ophiolite represents a new Cadomian suture zone exposure in the Gondwanan realm of the Iberian Massif, but its root zone is yet to be identified. This ophiolite shares a far-travelled nature with other Cadomian and Variscan suture zone exposures in Iberia, making the latter a piece of lithosphere built through inland transference of allochthonous terranes from peri-Gondwana onto mainland Gondwana during the Neoproterozoic-Cambrian and the Devonian-Carboniferous periods.

[EN] The Cadomian Orogeny produced a subduction-related orogen along the periphery of Gondwana and configured the pre-Variscan basement of the Iberian Massif. The architecture of the Cadomian Orogen requires detailed structural analysis for reconstruction because of severe tectonic reworking during the Paleozoic (Variscan cycle). Tectonometamorphic analysis and data compilation in SW Iberia (La Serena Massif, Spain) have allowed the identification of three Cadomian deformation phases and further constrained the global architecture and large-scale processes that contributed to the Ediacaran building and early Paleozoic dismantling of the Cadomian Orogen. The first phase (DC1, prior to 573 Ma) favored tabular morphology in plutons that intruded during the building of a continental arc. The second phase (DC2, 573–535 Ma) produced an upright folding and contributed to further crustal thickening. The third phase of deformation (DC3, ranging between ∼535 and ∼480 Ma) resulted in an orogen-parallel dome with oblique extensional flow. DC1 represents the crustal growth and thickening stage. DC2 is synchronous with a period of crustal thickening that affected most of the Gondwanan periphery, from the most external sections (Cadomian fore-arc) to the inner ones (Cadomian back-arc). We explain DC2 as a consequence of flat subduction, which was followed by a period dominated by crustal extension (DC3) upon roll-back of the lower plate. The Ediacaran construction of the Cadomian Orogen (DC1 and DC2) requires ongoing subduction beneath Gondwana s.l., whereas its dismantlement during the Early Paleozoic is compatible with oblique, sinistral convergence.

[EN] The Cadomian Orogeny encompassed the opening and closure of oceanic domains and associated sedimentary basins in the northern margin of Gondwana from Ediacaran to Early Cambrian time. In the Iberian Massif, these Cadomian basins are included in autochthonous and allochthonous (far-travelled) terranes of the Variscan Orogen. A compilation of Nd isotope information of Ediacaran-Lower Cambrian siliciclastic series supports previous proposal for variability in the sources along the North Gondwanan margin that continued during the Early Paleozoic. Older TDM model ages ranging from 1361 to 2357 Ma of the Variscan allochthonous Ediacaran-Lower Cambrian siliciclastic series indicate proximity to Archean and Paleoproterozoic old crustal sources of the West African Craton and represent deposition on a western Cadomian basin. In turn, the autochthonous Ediacaran-Lower Cambrian siliciclastic series show relatively younger TDM values ranging from 1179 to 2114 Ma, suggesting derivation from more juvenile magmatic rocks that are well represented further east. The Ediacaran-Lower Cambrian siliciclastic series of the autochthonous terranes formed in an eastern Cadomian basin located near the Sahara Metacraton, the Trans-Saharan Orogen and the Tuareg and Arabian-Nubian shields.

[EN] Suture zones are key to understand collisional orogens, but not all the remains of subduction leading to collision occur in the root of the suture. The Azuaga Fault bounds a Devonian suture zone known as Central Unit. This fault is a steeply NE-dipping, Variscan strike-slip fault with left-lateral and reverse oblique slip components formed during sinistral transpression in the Pennsylvanian. Motion along this fault was coeval with folding and fabric development in both its hanging wall and footwall, and also with the Matachel Fault. Tectonic flow associated with the Azuaga Fault shows high-vorticity, explaining the exhumation of a flat-lying Devonian suture zone via WNW-plunging extrusion from the upper-middle crust under inclined triclinic transpression during ENE-WSW convergence. The exposed basal contact of the Central Unit is not the root zone of a Variscan suture zone, but instead is a NE-dipping breaching fault that cuts across the suture zone that is contiguous to the SW under the upper section of the footwall. The peri-Gondwanan terrane between the Central Unit and the South-Portuguese Zone of the Iberian Massif (most of the Ossa-Morena Zone) is underlain by a Devonian suture, implying it is a continental allochthon. Variscan suture zones in Europe are affected by strike-slip faults. In our case, this pattern implies the location of suture zone exposures and location of its root are different. Suture zones and strike-slip faults are common in orogens and analysis of their relationships may lead to relocation of suture zone roots and re-thinking of upper and lower plates.
