LABOR supply , *ORIGIN of life , *FIELD research , *ARCHIVES , *TRADITIONAL knowledge ,WESTERN countries - Abstract
This article studies the origins of the way of life known as an amphibian culture on the Colombian Atlantic coast, its expression in forms of mixed subsistence associated with the indigenous tradition around the use of aquatic ecosystems and especially in the river navigation of the lower Magdalena. For this purpose, we have used documents and primary sources such as chronicles of the Indies, files from the General Archive of the Indies in Seville (AGI), archaeological field research, and compilations of historical documents on the Caribbean coast made by historians. We note that pre-Hispanic navigation was widely spread in this area since, besides the hostile terrestrial roads, nature offered fluvial paths, representing a travel alternative with significant advantages in different areas. This produced an eventual use and appropriation of this knowledge by the European colonizers of the XVI century, as in an environment where the ships and the knowledge of the western world did not seem to be enough, the canoes together with the indigenous labor force were more useful than the European ships, with disastrous consequences for a way of life that, nevertheless, still survives nowadays.

This paper will analyze the reasons that gave rise to the idea of building an interoceanic canal in the region of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec during the administration of Viceroy Antonio María de Bucareli, which would serve to shorten the times of goods and supplies transfer between the Iberian Peninsula and Alta California and thus combat the expansionism of the enemy powers (in particular Russia) in the American Northwest. The importance of this project lies in its idea of reconfiguring the geoeconomic and military order of Spanish America at the end of the 18th century, in the understanding that Tehuantepec would be the new key to entering the South Sea (displacing the Strait of Magallanes) and the way that would allow the Spanish Crown to have a better administrative control of american economic resources. This historical reconstruction was made from the series of reserved letters, maps and official documentation that protect the General Archive of the Nation of Mexico, the General Archive of Indies and the National Historical Archive in Madrid. SEVENTEENTH century , *PUBLIC sphere , *DOCUMENTATION , *COURTS , *BRIBERY , *TRIALS (Law) - Abstract
In Peru, during the seventeenth century, the dispensing space of graces and grants was the viceregal palace of Lima. This space was attended by all those who wanted a position in the administration or be part of the court circle of the viceroys. To this end, the use of gifts becames a useful tool and scarcely punished for the diffusion of public and private spheres of Crown officials. Thus, during the government of the count of Castellar (1674-1678) numerous and rich gifts were given to his wife, some of which were met with a provision. Thanks to the analysis of the documentation generated by the trial of residence of this viceroy, preserved in the General Archive of the Indies, we can know the particular origin of this trousseau and better understand the network of legal and illegal relations that was woven around it. This article explores Maroon spatialities during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries through a critical geographical analysis based on historical records collected in the General Archive of the Indies, the National General Archive of Bogotá, and the oral tradition of San Basilio de Palenque, a community of descendants of fugitives from slavery located in the Montes de María in the Colombian Caribbean. The article's findings show that San Basilio de Palenque survived by navigating in-between different colonial forms of producing territory that simultaneously implied opposition and co-optation. Drawing on Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui's "ch'ixi" and Gloria Anzaldúa's "border notions," this spatial navigation embraced opposition and fissure between African, European, and indigenous elements without trying to suppress or reconcile them. This ethic of spatial balance as marronage was San Basilio de Palenque's formula for survival. The methodology implemented in this article also required stepping in-between the archive and the oral tradition, without taking sides, taking a ch'ixi/border approach, as well revisiting the history of this Maroon community in Latin America. • Unsettling prior approaches to marronage from a geographical lens. • Cusicanqui's ch'ixi and Anzaldúa's border notions enlighten Maroon spatialities. • A methodological approach to marronage stepping in-between the archive and orality. • Colonial Maroon communities as spaces of mixture, disruption & co-optation as survival. • Ethic of spatial balance as marronage. BUSINESSMEN , *HISTORICAL libraries , *ECONOMIC development , *PEARLS , *SPANIARDS - Abstract
With this work, we will approach the complex and dynamic historical context of the first half of 16th-century Seville, when commercial and financial activity acquired dimensions never seen before in Europe thanks to the emerging possibilities of transactions in the New World. The protagonists of this vital impulse, the Spaniards as well as those from other points in the continent, are only partially known. Day after day, new examples of the «man of business with the Indies» appear. Alonso de Oviedo, who is analysed here, helps us to understand in a broader way the temporal, human and economic space indicated. His profile goes beyond the clichés of this typology, as it adds to his dedication to business, an artistic activity very much connected with the economic development mentioned, such as the art of silverwork, also explored in these lines. The relationship with the businesses of pearls and seed pearls fits within one of the chapters of most interest in the European society of the time, associated with luxury and the mystery of faraway lands and seas. The starting point of this research is a large number of unknown documents from the Archivo General de Indias (General Archive of the Indies) and Archivo Histórico Provincial (Provincial Historical Archive), both from Seville. This paper aims to present the universals properties of the Archives, thought of as an archival institution, based on a priori philosophical reflection, to establish fundaments to determinate the graduation of these properties - and their maximum level, at the Paradigmatic Archive - and to confirm these properties through the forms observed in the General Archive of the Indies, that displays them to some degree. With that, the aim is to build a model for the Archives, determining how they should be. The interdisciplinary approach, between ontology and archivology, was adopted, integrating the method of philosophical reflection with documentary research procedures, based on pieces of fonds from the General Archive of the Indies, collection of images of the author and sources. The discussion addresses aspects of practices, forms and functions, which indicate the essence of the Archives and their path towards their paradigmatic ideality. The General Archive of the Indies is presented as a particular example that exemplifies these essential properties. Our conclusion is that there are certain essential universal properties of Archives, or archival institutions, which are: accessibility, durability and practicality. In addition, the proposed model is applicable for the institutionalization of Archives and also for the construction, reforms, implantations, the creation of new spaces, adaptations, restructuring in buildings and institutional uses of the Archive. - Abstract
That same day in 1776, delegates from the 13 British colonies met in Philadelphia to unilaterally approve the Declaration of Independence. Britain would not relinquish sovereignty over its overseas possessions until 1783, with the signing of the Treaty of Paris, which ended the war with the colonists that began in 1775. Little by little, the key participation of Spain on the side of the rebels is being disclosed, and the names of Spanish soldiers with an important role in the conflict are also becoming familiar. This is the case of our main character, Fernando de Leyba, who was at that time under the orders of Bernardo de Gálvez, whose role as a soldier and politician during the American War of Independence was also essential in the history of Spanish Florida and Louisiana. For his part, despite his outstanding military career, the image of Fernando de Leyba has not been widely known in the history of Spain. However, his legacy and his role in Spanish military history are still relevant today, and his figure is an example of leadership, bravery and tactical skills on the battlefield.

- Abstract
The Madrid Gazette published a Supplement on October 14, 1806, regarding the arrival of the Director of the Royal Expedition Vaccine Philanthropy, Francisco Xavier Balmis, and the reception held by King Carlos IV. Balmis had completed his journey across the Spanish overseas territories, taking the vaccine against smallpox from arm to arm with the help of a human chain of children. During this journey, Balmis also established Vaccination Boards and endeavoured to identify cows with cowpox. The publication endorsed the policies of a declining Bourbon monarchy and marked the peak of Balmis’ professional career. Both sides emerged victorious: the Crown showcased itself as the sponsor and organiser of this altruistic journey, in line with prior scientific expeditions; and Balmis secured his place in Public Health history as the director of the first international vaccination campaign. This did not mean the culmination of the expedition, as other members were still administering vaccinations in the Philippines and South America. The main objective of this study was to assess the importance of the newspaper Madrid Gazette, outline the contents of the publication, authenticate the origins of the documentary sources underpinning its composition, and confirm its impact and citations throughout 19th-century Spanish publications. The components of the publication, its origins, as well as Balmis’ involvement in its creation, have been substantiated.

The numerous documentation preserved in the General Archive of the Indies allows delving the links between Europe and America from different perspectives and fields of study over almost six centuries. Our interest lies in the analysis of the artistic works contained in a series of inventories of people linked to the Royal Audience of Mexico in 1622, thus being able to obtain further evidence of the existence of the collecting of paintings and sculptures in the Mexican viceregal environment. From this information, we will be able to verify the typology of the artistic pieces most requested by the society of New Spain, as well as the origin of them, thus highlighting commercial systems such as the Carrera de Indias, and underlining the relevance of the Cultural exchanges between Europe and America in the first decades of the 17th century. From 1595 up until 1640, the slave trade to the Spanish Indies was under the asiento system, monopolized by Portuguese new-Christian traders. This paper analyses the naval logistics of this specific transatlantic slave trade from 1604 to 1624, based on documentation in the Archivo General de Índias in Seville. In accordance to the data available, it is possible to present tendencies about this specific slave trade, the typology of the ships involved, and the crews’ age and provenance. The new data presented in this paper is a complement to the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database, as it is based solely on evidence from the Archivo and has a different focus, specifically its naval logistics. Although it was a monopolized trade, it was only made possible by a multitude of participants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

his work aims to rescue one of the survivors of the first trip that went around the world in the Magallanes-Elcano expedition, Ocasio Alonso, a native of Bollullos del Condado, in the current province of Huelva. Thanks to the file “Probanza de la posesión del Maluco. Badajoz, 1524”, located in the section Patronato of the General Archive of the Indies, we can access your testimony as a member of that expedition. The document aims to clarify the possession of the Maluco Islands during the Castilian-Portuguese conflict by controlling the domains of the Especiería. Ocasio Alonso became one of the witnesses presented by the Spanish imperial crown. In addition to this transcript which will serve us to meet the character and his participation in this historic milestone, we will also follow him through other adventures that occurred during the crossing and that have been collected in chronicles and works carried out to praise and publicize the circumnavigating deed.

The first poetic principles that organized and fixed the new way of doing poetry in Spanish—both in their maxims and in their uses—did not appear in the Iberian Peninsula until almost the last two decades of the sixteenth century. However, this fact does not imply that the Spanish poets were not caught up in the new winds of change, which it started during the Thirties of the same century in Italy, just the opposite. Therefore, some normative texts, which seek to explain and systematize the new poetic regulation, just all in Spanish instead of in Latin, begin to diffidently appear from 1580.
El Arte Poética en Romance Castellano (1580 ), by the Portuguese poet Miguel Sánchez de Lima, is one of the first attempts that tries to justify and set up the new literary precepts of the moment, in contrast to the old medieval Spanish literary theories. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract
The Royal Philanthropic Vaccine Expedition (1803-1813) becomes relevant in these pandemic times due to the breadth of its geographical dimension and its nature of a health expedition inspired by a pioneering public health objective of its time: to spread the newly discovered vaccine against smallpox. Undertaken by a small number of participants, the expedition was directed by Francisco Xavier Balmis, who was accompanied, among others, by Antonio Gutiérrez Robredo, his favorite disciple. This research, carried out using primary sources, explores the relationship between both, which went from mutual trust to enmity due to a trivial conflict. The study of previous correspondence and late resolution of the lawsuit filed by Balmis against Gutiérrez allows us to delve into their biographical profiles. This paper studies the running of the Notary’s Office at the City Council of Cuzco in Peru, from its foundation in 1534 until the end of the 17th century. It centres on the figure of the notary and his relationship with the other members who comprise the office. For this study, we have used documents issued by the City Council of Cuzco and documents received by the Council from other institutions, which are housed in the Archivo General de Indias in Seville. We have also studied two books of the minutes of proceedings of the Council. These documents have permitted us to analyse the various systems of promotion to the post of notary, what the duties of the notary were, and how the office was organised, with its system of hierarchies and the distribution of work.

Approaching the classification scheme of the General Archive of the Indies can be difficult to people who do not know its documentation. However, the way of working of the creators and the instructions received by the archivists mark the structure of the classification scheme. The present work aims to facilitate the identification of the creators of the Audiencia de Santo Domingo from 1700.

This study provides a contrastive analysis of the film cultures in Francoist Spain and the German Democratic Republic in the late 1950s and early 1960s. In the context of this period of classic cinephilia, the article focuses on the institutional position of film clubs and on their function as 'places of negotiation' in which different forces and interests collided: more or less independent film activists acted within, against, or parallel to state organizations trying to implement certain cultural activities and discourses. The arguments are based on broad archival material from Spain and Germany (Archivo General de la Administración, Bundesarchiv Berlin etc.) and, specifically, on the analysis of two of these institutions in Barcelona and Leipzig. The initial hypothesis holds that in their reactions to these institutions, the Spanish and East German states present two different conceptions of state cultural policies (authoritarian and totalitarian). At the same time, the activities of the clubs (screenings, discussions, edition of magazines) can also be read as part of a broader attempt to redefine the filmcultural field along three axes (time, place and status), connecting them to other European film cultures of the time and enabling us to widen and differentiate the analysis of classical cinephilia within a broader international context. LOYALTY ,SOCIAL theory ,INTERNATIONAL relations ,IMPERIALISM ,SPANISH monarchy - Abstract
This contribution investigates the significance of loyalty to the Spanish Crown as a link between local level governance, viceroyalties, and the European metropolis, a link that was supposed to stabilize the Colonial Empire. The article analyzes connections to the related concepts of fidelity and trust by parsing out their use in original sources from the General Archive of the Indies (Seville, Spain) and by applying perspectives from social theory. Throughout the text, examples are given to illustrate the importance of loyalty for relations between Indians, colonists, royal officials, and the Spanish king. Stemming from various regions of the Spanish Empire, such as Mexico, the Andes and the Philippines, the archival material investigated goes beyond the colonial era, covering the early phase of independence in the 19th century as well. In conclusion, the reciprocal aspect of loyalty is highlighted, obligating the monarch as much as the subjects to serve one another. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The editorial article highlights the contribution of Juan Marchena Fernández to Latin American and Caribbean historiography. Marchena, who was trained as a physicist but dedicated himself to history, was a teacher to several historians and stood out for his prolific intellectual production. Additionally, he is remembered for his conversations in cities like Cartagena, where he immersed himself in Caribbean history through files from the General Archive of the Indies. His work is highly valued and serves as a reference for the new generations of historians in the Caribbean and Latin America. The journal Historia Caribe invites submissions of research papers for consideration. [Extracted from the article]

This article draws upon sources from Spain's Archive of the Indies and elsewhere to survey the early seventeenth-century slave trade to Buenos Aires, exploring the diversity of ways in which slaves were transported to Buenos Aires, strategies of contraband traders, and the city's rich economic and social links to port cities in Brazil and Angola. Taken together, these diverse sources reveal how Buenos Aires was a key port of the South Atlantic. This article also suggests some revisions of the major characteristics of the early slave trade to Spanish and Portuguese America – notably, the significant presence of children among the enslaved. MICROHISTORY , *ARCHAEOLOGY , *ENLIGHTENMENT , *HISTORIOGRAPHY - Abstract
This essay outlines an experimental microhistory of the founding of the Archivo General de Indias (AGI) in Seville, Spain, one that attends to the localized exclusions that characterize this Enlightenment project. If the “archival turn” has highlighted in ethnographic terms the ways in which silences are inscribed in archival practices and protocols, I propose an archaeological approach that looks to the archive's material and architectonic foundations. The critical turn in eighteenth-century historiography was linked to the emergence of the modern, historical archive, and it is at the intersection of these methodological disputes and the geopolitics of imperial competition that the AGI was established. New scholarship by critical historians in northern Europe provoked calls for an official response in Spain, and this task fell to Juan Bautista Muñoz. His historiographical defense of Spanish colonialism would lead to not only the publication of hisHistoria del Nuevo-Mundobut also the founding of the AGI as the infrastructure of modern historiography. I read Muñoz's work as an epistemic intervention in ongoing debates over the writing of history that necessarily turns on an architectural intervention in the built environment – not a “domiciliation” but the eviction and subsequent erasure of the inhabitants of the building chosen to house the archive. By foregrounding this eviction and the renovations that followed, I underscore the violence that founds the modern archive, bring into relief the colonial materials from which it is assembled and trace a shift from the nomological to the historiographical as the ground of imperial sovereignty. An essay is presented on the Archivo General de Indias' (AGI) exhibition on Spain's discovery of America. The author examines the parallel between the AGI's racist representations of the past and the writing of the history of Dutch expansion into the Atlantic World, the limitations of the historiography on the Dutch Atlantic, and the methods that future studies can utilize to write histories that are more in tune with the third world's current neocolonial predicament.

This article is written by two authors: Oscar Llerena and Carlos Levoyer. However, each one has annotated observations to the other author in short paragraphs that the reader will be able to distinguish. At the beginning, Professor Llerena guides us to one of the essences of modernity and its attitude towards the subject of memory, its project of perpetuation. Proceeds with the reflection, using Foucault while providing a scaffolding to understand the construction in which the official history became in the versions of the so-called Chroniclers of the Indies and the deconstruction operated by Luis Andrade Reimers on the profile of the founder of what today we call Ecuador: Atahualpa. He ends up by emphasizing the importance of documentation from past centuries. In the second part Levoyer talks about office archives, the little value that certain Ecuadorian bureaucrats grant them, the Spanish libraries and archives. He tells us about his research and findings of Ecuadorian documentation in those archives, the need to insert them with the help of the Human Sciences in their respective historical horizons, the indispensable that it is to transcribe them through palaeography to be able to read them, the steps to make a final palaeographic report. He points out where our colonial documents are, focusing on the General Archive of the Indies, the works that have been done in it, showing that there are very few, in such an amount that he says that are abandoned. Finally he points out the need to encounter such documentation through palaeography to help us face serious issues in our life as a country.

We base this paper on the linguistic study of seven letters selected from the Archivo General de Indias. Their interest resides in the signature of their writers, in this case women, who answer their relatives about their move to the New World. The analysis of the linguistic, graphemic, phonetic, grammatical and lexical phenomena, shows variants of less formal records and in many cases attributable to the poor cultural level of their scribes, as well as to the possible connotations of style that the feminine condition explains. The textual typology follows the intimist structure of these missives between relatives, but it reveals contrastive expressions and uses from a sociolinguistic perspective, with preferences in the idiomatic resources of the women immersed in American colonial emigration. This paper analyses five hurricanes that occurred in the period 1600 to 1800. These examples were identified during a systematic search in the General Archive of the Indies (AGI) in Seville. The research combined the expertise of climatologists and historians in order to optimise the search and analysis strategies. Results demonstrate the potential of this archive for the assessment of hurricanes in this period and show some of the difficulties involved in the collection of evidence of hurricane activity. The documents provide detailed descriptions of a hurricane's impacts and allow us to identify previously unreported hurricanes, obtain more precise dates for hurricanes previously identified, better define the area affected by a given hurricane and, finally, better assess a hurricane's intensity.
