The Architecture of Colonial America sets forth a brief history and an analysis of the architecture of Colonial America, in such a way that they may be of interest and value both to the general reader and to the architect. Architecture is crystallised history. Not only does it represent the life of the past in visible and enduring form, but it also represents one of the most agreeable sides of man's creative activity. Furthermore, if we read a little between the lines, the buildings of former days tell us what manner of men and women lived in them.

Architecture requires a broad definition. It involves more than simply questions of style, esoteric theory, or technical progress; it is the physical record of a culture's relationship to its technology and the land, and, most important, of the system of values concerning men's relationships with one another. Similarly, Henry Ford employed Albert Kahn to design a state-of-the-art, innovative factory for Ford's groundbreaking assembly line. Reinforced concrete supported massive, open rooms without any interior dividing walls, which yields the uninterrupted space that was essential for Ford's sprawling continuous production setups.
