RESUMO Mensurar, registrar, representar, enfim… documentar o espaço existente (antropizado ou não) se configura como um interesse estratégico muito sedimentado na cultura ocidental. Já em contexto moderno, em grande medida, a partir do século XIX, essas práticas acabaram adquirindo uma ramificação específica para a arquitetura, sofrendo notória influência de “interesses preservacionistas”, mesmo se compreendidos de maneira difusa. Talvez, como resultado desse processo, a documentação arquitetônica ainda seja vista, por vezes, como prática subsidiária da disciplina da restauração. Contudo, uma abordagem aprofundada sobre esse tema pode revelar um desenvolvimento científico específico, com relativa independência disciplinar, que merece ser analisado com a seguinte finalidade: proporcionar a melhor utilização de uma importante ferramenta para o campo da preservação como um todo, ou seja, não apenas como subsídio a trabalhos diretamente envolvidos com o restauro arquitetônico, mas também para as disciplinas da história e arqueologia e seus congêneres vinculados à arquitetura (como história da arquitetura e arqueologia da arquitetura). Nesse sentido, o presente artigo procura subsidiar uma contextualização precisa, em que são examinados alguns desenvolvimentos recentes da temática, abordados a partir da Carta do levantamento arquitetônico, documento internacional de referência, para o qual apresentamos uma tradução diretamente do italiano, trazida originariamente em nossa dissertação de mestrado e aqui comentada à luz da produção bibliográfica. A limite, nossa investigação almeja contribuir para pacificar a compreensão de um aspecto ainda pouco discutido no contexto brasileiro: afinal, o levantamento arquitetônico se constitui enquanto prática ou disciplina? ABSTRACT Measuring, recording, representing, in short… documenting the existing space (anthropized or not) is configured as a strategic interest that is deeply rooted in Western culture. In a modern context, largely from the 19th century onwards, these practices ended up acquiring a specific ramification for architecture, being notoriously influenced by “preservationist interests,” even if understood in a diffuse way. Perhaps due to this process, architectural documentation is still sometimes seen as a subsidiary practice of the discipline of restoration. However, an in-depth approach to this topic may reveal a specific scientific development, with relative disciplinary independence, which deserves to be analyzed with the following purpose: to provide a better use of an important tool for the field of preservation as a whole, that is, not only as a subsidy for works directly involved with architectural restoration, but also for the disciplines of history and archeology and their counterparts linked to architecture (such as architectural history and architectural archeology). In this sense, this article seeks to support a precise contextualization, in which some recent developments on the subject are examined, approached from the Charter of the architectural survey, an international reference document, for which we present a translation directly from Italian, originally brought in our Master’s dissertation and commented here in the light of the bibliographic production. Ultimately, our investigation aims to contribute to pacifying the understanding of an aspect that is still little discussed in the Brazilian context: after all, is the architectural survey constitutes a practice or discipline?

This is an abstract from the "Digging Deeper: Pushing Ourselves to Engage the Public in Our Shared Heritage through Outreach and Education" session, at the 88th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. The United Comstock Merger Mill, locally known as the American Flat Mill, was a cyanide mill constructed in 1922 on the eastern portion of the American Flat near Virginia City, Nevada. This mill, located within the boundaries of the Virginia City National Historic Landmark, represented one of the last large-scale efforts to mine and mill ore on the Comstock. The “last gasp” of the Comstock was unsuccessful, and the mill closed in 1926. After abandonment, the mill became a popular local gathering spot and a physical safety hazard. In late 2014, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) demolished the mill after reaching an agreement with the Nevada SHPO about how the mill would be documented and how that information would be shared with the public. This poster shares the multiple public outreach projects the BLM completed to share the history of the mill, including a documentary, interpretive kiosk, brochure, virtual tour, podcast, and mobile exhibit.

Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) technology is increasingly used in surveying, construction and architecture. The potential of the data obtained by this method creates the possibility of its versatile application also in conservation and revitalization of monuments, archaeology or history. The use of this technology during the creation of architectural documentation of a historic building greatly facilitates the acquisition of comprehensive information about its actual condition in a fast, non-invasive and very precise manner. Thanks to digital technology, it also creates the possibility to accurately interpret the condition of an object and present its model in a virtual space. This technology provides the ability to transfer acquired image elements with high accuracy of their mapping to plans and designs prepared by architects and contractors. It is also possible to maintain high technical standards in the processes aimed at the preparation of the required graphical studies, thanks to the use of the point cloud obtained in TLS. One of the most important advantages of using this measurement method is the possibility of combining it with data from e. g. from photogrammetric tools, which gives the possibility to fill in the missing elements creating a more complete picture of the needed data. This paper presents the implementation of terrestrial laser scanning technology as a non-invasive method for the modelling of walls and buildings of the so-called “greenfield”. Revers BIM on the example of the measurement of the facades of the buildings of the old market in Jarosław. This technology allows for preparation of precise architectural documentation including: projections, sections, elevation views, 3D models or multimedia visualizations. The use of TLS for cultural heritage research also enables the preparation of fully complete documentation for conservation and restoration works aimed at maintaining the current state of monuments or even at reconstructing their damaged architectural elements.

The Monastery of Varnakova is one of the most important and oldest religious complexes in Greece with high historical significance. The Catholicon was reconstructed in 1831 on the remains of the 11th century structure. Today it is in a bad state of preservation, as it has been severely affected by strong earthquakes and presents serious problems regarding both its stability and aesthetic values. Because of the importance of the monument and taking into account its poor state of preservation, a thorough diagnostic study was conducted through an interdisciplinary approach, which involved historical, architectural and structural analysis, as well as materi-als characterization and diagnosis of decay patterns, in order to propose an optimized rehabilitation plan. Techniques used included a 3D laser scanning and photogrammetric techniques, UAV images, a Total Station survey, 3D textured model using various techniques and software, prospection by ground penetrating radar (GPR), infrared thermography (IRT), finite element (FE) software, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Differential Ther-mal and Thermo-Gravimetric Analysis (DTA-TG), polarized light microscope examination, structural and me-chanical properties for material restoration (e.g. stones and mortars), as well as historical stone mechanical strength tests. The history and description of the monument are presented, while the preservation state and the risks that are imposing the need for restoration, as well as the conceptual proposal of restoration, follow the pathology and decay diagnosis of the monument. Digital documentation permits the fusion of the various disciplines’ data, hence allowing for the integrated design of interventions. The dynamics of the digital recon-struction allow for the adjustment of the restoration process according to the findings. Thus, the rehabilitation plan, which has initiated, takes into account and combines the findings of all scientific fields and proposes the use of new compatible and performing restoration materials and appropriate rehabilitation actions, capable of ensuring structural integrity and highlighting the values of this important monument, within an innovative project management scheme and in a dynamic manner, throughout the implementation of the project. This is an exemplary work transferring the model of the Rehabilitation of the Holy Aedicule project to Greece, based on a transdisciplinary approach and multi-actors’ cooperation.

A Management Plan (Volume 1) and a Condition Assessment (Vollume II) for the Lighter-Than-Air Historic District conducted on behalf of the United States Air Force at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in Burlington and Ocean Counties, New Jersey. The management plan aids Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in managing the historic properties under its jurisdiction as required by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. The Lighter-Than- Air Historic District is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places for its for its significance in the U.S.Navy's air transportation history involving the early development and use of both rigid and non-rigid airships. The district is comprised of 70 contributing and 14 non-contributing resources. The period of significance is 1921 to 1962. This study verified the districts boundaries and found that the district remains largely intact. The original buildings, site planning, and landscape retain a high level of integrity. The district's architectural character is strengthened by the absence of intrusive modem construction. Overall, the district buildings are well maintained and remain functional; however, the report identifies concerns about modem building materials and inconsistent maintenance practices. The cunent management practices were reviewed, and this report presents management recommendations for the district's pivotal, contributing, and non-contributing buildings. The condition assessment of the buildings in the district supports the recommendations in the management plan.

This report presents the results of a historic building inventory and evaluation conducted on behalf of the United States Department of the Air Force at the Air Force Research Laboratory/Information Directorate, which includes Rome Research Site located in Oneida County, New York, and three affiliated test annexes situated in Madison and Herkimer Counties, New York. The evaluation aids the Air Force Research Laboratory/Information Directorate in managing the historic properties under its jurisdiction as required by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. Argonne National Laboratory evaluated 36 selected facilities at these research sites for architectural significance, integrity, and historical association with United States Department of the Air Force communications research and radar testing missions. Based upon the results of the study, Argonne National Laboratory recommends that the 36 facilities are not eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

At the request of the community of Randolph, Arizona, and Salt River Project, WestLand Engineering & Environmental Services (WestLand) was asked to complete a National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) Eligibility Evaluation of the community of Randolph, located in Pinal County, Arizona. The documented area was defined by the formal community boundary of Randolph, an unincorporated community of Pinal County. The community is located within Sections 9 and 10 of Township 6 South, Range 8 East, as depicted on the Coolidge (2021) 7.5′ topographic quadrangle, Gila and Salt River Baseline and Meridian (Figures 1 and 2). The evaluated area consists of 166 acres encompassing the residential (and some commercial) portion of the community, for a total of 205 parcels located along Highway 87 and the former Sunset Route of the Southern Pacific Railroad. Established in 1925, the community of Randolph was touted as the newest townsite to rival Phoenix. By the 1930s, however, the community was still a small, rural townsite largely populated by white farmers and ranchers and a handful of African American, Mexican American, and Native American farm laborers. By the next decade, local demographics and settlement patterns had shifted, and the community was largely African American and subdivided along racial lines. Whites settled to the west of Highway 87, and Blacks to the east of the highway. Over the next several decades, Randolph became a multi-generational African American community; a community that persists to the present day while many other similar historically Black communities in Arizona have not survived. The persistence of Randolph and its residents is evidenced in its setting, agrarian qualities, and long-standing cultural history. Throughout its development, Randolph has continued to retain its racial heritage expressed both through its population and its built environment, and today remains the oldest extant historically Black community in Arizona.

This document is an Archaeological Investigation in Support of Section 106 Compliance for the ABL Space Systems RS-1 Project at Launch Complex 576-E at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Santa Barbara County, California. The Project proposes to operate the ABL Space Systems RS1 launch vehicle at the existing, decommissioned Launch Complex 576-E (LC 576-E) on Vandenberg Air Force Base (AFB) in Santa Barbara County, California. Applied EarthWorks delineated the Area of Direct Impact. The Archaeological Study Area (ASA) was defined as the ADI plus a 100-meter buffer and the entirety of any cultural resource within or intersected by the ADI. Background research initially indicated that six archaeological sites existed within the (Archaeological Study Area (ASA). Surface survey and subsurface testing revealed that CA-SBA-TMP6 and -TMP 8 do not contain archaeological material and therefore are not archaeological sites. CA-SBA-907, -2429, -2429, and -2430 were plotted incorrectly, likely during the transition from paper to Geographic Information System mapping. Henceforth, survey and testing results indicate that no archaeological resources are present within the Area of Direct Impact (ADI). Because no historic properties are within the ADI, the project will have no effect on historic properties.

Mitchell Springs provided the central Montezuma Valley of southwestern Colorado a rare and reliable water source that has been used by ancients for millennia. People began to settle near the springs in the middle of the AD seventh century and by the twelfth century a sprawling watershed-wide community with large-scale architectural and agricultural works had formed. Using a combination of data from surveys and recent excavations, this article explores the ties between the rise of elite groups in the watershed and the use of innovative methods to enhance agricultural production. Food abundance appears to have been the primary engine that drove the formation of these groups whose presence was symbolized by a greathouse and other monumental creations. Excavations have revealed evidence that suggests one such group was tied to the same physical space at the center of the community for at least 400 years. Agricultural production at a scale that is demonstrably greater than what could be generated by a few households or extended households is suggested by repeated feasting at this location, room suites with unusually large storage capacities, and the presence of rooms and features that were created and used principally for the preparation and consecration of food for these events. The earliest architectural footprints of this group consisted of two physically linked but distinctly separate adobe block houses in the early ninth century. Over time, elements of these entities became associated with, or evolved into, a greathouse and tri-wall building that appear to have served similar functions as the earlier houses and features that underlie those buildings. They symbolized success, power, past ancestors, and revered space, and they were enshrined and deliberately protected over the course of centuries.

Argonne National Laboratory conducted a historic building inventory and evaluation on behalf of the United States Air Force at Joint Base Andrews, Camp Springs, Prince George's County, Maryland. The inventory and evaluation aids Joint Base Andrews in managing the historic properties under its jurisdiction as required by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. The inventory examined 52 facilities, including four large hangars, three of which are associated with the Air Force One Maintenance and Support Complex (also known as the Presidential Air Group); four pre-base nonmilitary historic structures and landscape features associated with the “Belle Chance” area of the base; and 44 base support and operations facilities. The survey identified five resources that are recommended eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, including three distinctive presidential hangars (Hangars 3, 6, and 19) and the Joint Base Andrews Passenger Terminal, all of which have been a symbolic location for historically significant events associated with the duties of the Presidents of the United States from 1961 to the present. The fifth resource is the Darcy Family Cemetery at Belle Chance, which is eligible because of its association with the original, nineteenth century plantation archaeological site

This report presents the results of a comprehensive documentation and analysis of ground stone bedrock features at LA 43414 (the Merchant site) and LA 121668. The bedrock features are located on lands administered by the Carlsbad Field Office (CFO) of the Bureau of Land Management and the New Mexico State Land Office. This project was funded under the Permian Basin Programmatic Agreement (PBPA) administered by the CFO. This investigation recorded and examined 359 ground stone bedrock features between the two sites, using newly standardized documentation procedures for bedrock mortars and grinding basins that were instigated by the CFO (see Murrell 2019). Structure from Motion photogrammetry was used to make high-resolution 3D models of the features, which also provided the data to gather length, width, and depth data for each feature. Additionally, qualitative attributes were recorded during on-site field work. A statistical cluster analysis was used to evaluate the morphological variation of the bedrock features and subsequently to identify six clusters or groups or similar features. The resulting clusters assessed in relation to a suite of related research topics including (1) exploring the functional and morphological variability of bedrock features; (2) correlating use-wear characteristics to potential function; (3) discussing the spatial distribution of bedrock feature morphologies and their relation to other features such as burned rock accumulations or pueblo remains; (4) examining whether the bedrock features were created through intentional manufacture or sustained use; (5) discussing the use-life of features; (6) determining the potential age and cultural affiliation of the bedrock features; (7) correlating the associated past and present plant and mineral resources using previous excavation data at LA 43414, ethnography, and pollen results; and (8) evaluating the possibility of ritual contexts for bedrock features at these sites.

This report presents the results of a National Register of Historic Places evaluation conducted on behalf of the United States Air Force at Eglin Air Force Base, Okaloosa County, Florida. This evaluation aids the Base in managing the historic properties under their jurisdiction as required by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. The study examined three office buildings located within the primary cantonment area: Buildings 349, 350, and 351, which were used for military administration and research. The three buildings were built during the Cold War Era (1945–1991) and were evaluated for historical and architectural significance. Buildings 349 (8OK03679), 350 (8OK03680), and 351 (8OK03681) were examined within the historic context of armament research and testing at Eglin Air Force Base and mid-century modern architectural designs. This study revealed that the New Formalist and Miesian Modernist elements of the architectural design of the buildings as a complex respond to Criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places, which specifies distinctive characteristics of a type, period, or method of construction. The building complex (Armament Research Complex, 8OK04157) is recommended eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district.

This document is a Section 106 Identification of Historic Properties for the Public Safety Radio Upgrade at the Ground-to-Air Transmission and Receiving (GATR) Site Project. The proposed project would install new receiver/transmitter antennas, radios, a global positioning system receiver, and associated racks and hardware at the GATR Site, located on the peak of Oak Mountain on the south base portion of Vandenberg Space Force Base (VSFB). VSFB requests concurrence from the State Historic Preservation Office that the Area of Potential Effects for the County of Santa Barbara Public Safety Radio Upgrade at the GATR Site is adequately delineated. Additionally, VSFB requests concurrence that P-42-041281, Building 51, is not eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Cultural Resources concluded that there proposed undertaking would result in no historic properties affected.

The City of Phoenix (COP) Aviation Department has prepared a Comprehensive Asset Management Plan (CAMP) Short Range Development Plan for the Sky Harbor International Airport (Sky Harbor) in Phoenix, Arizona, to guide development at the airport over the next 20 years (herein referred to as the Sky Harbor CAMP Project). The plan proposes improvements to the airfield and the construction of two new Crossfield Taxiways, expansion of the passenger terminal, a grade change of the Union Pacific Railroad within the study area, development of a North Cargo Area, and redevelopment of the South Area. Implementation of the Sky Harbor CAMP Project requires the approval of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Federal Railroad Administration. The FAA must approve the changes to the airport layout and the use of federal funds; the Federal Railroad Administration must approve the use of federal funds. Because federal decisions are needed, the project is subject to compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA). The COP Aviation Department is currently preparing an environmental assessment to disclose the potential impacts of the plan for compliance with NEPA. SWCA Environmental Consultants (SWCA) was tasked with identifying historic properties within the APE to assist the FAA and the COP to comply with NEPA and NHPA review responsibilities. Historic property identification for the Sky Harbor CAMP Project was conducted in several stages, including background research, archaeological reconnaissance, and an architectural survey of the built environment. Because the planning period for the Sky Harbor CAMP Project extends to 2030, properties constructed up to 1980 would reach historic age by that time. Therefore, evaluating properties constructed up to 1980 (i.e., pre-1981) considers the 10-year lifespan of the Sky Harbor CAMP Project as a whole.

This report presents a summary of the results of the Blanket Purchase Authority (BPA) 10 project sponsored by the Carlsbad Field Office (CFO) of the Bureau of Land Management and funded under the Permian Basin Programmatic Agreement. Geomorphological and geoarchaeological investigations were conducted at the Merchant site (LA 43414) and among suspected anthrosol deposits at LA 121668 and LA 171925. Analyses of soil chemistry and chronometric dates were completed.

This document is an Archaeological Resources Supplemental Report on Phase II of the Ground Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD) Test Program. The project involves Vandenberg Space Force Base (VSFB) to take part in developing and testing a new Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) system, which will involve utilizing and modifying existing ICBM structures on VSFB. VSFB determined that the GBSD Test Program will result in no adverse effects to archaeological and historic properties for Phase II.

This report presents the results of an intensive archaeological survey of 1,257 acres in the vicinity of the Merchant site (LA 43414), a prehistoric pueblo settlement in Lea County of southeastern New Mexico. The survey parcels are on lands administered by the Carlsbad Field Office (CFO) of the Bureau of Land Management and the New Mexico State Land Office. The survey was funded under the Permian Basin Programmatic Agreement (PBPA) administered by the CFO. The Merchant site was first investigated by the Lea County Archaeological Society between 1959 and 1965 (Leslie 1965) and was the subject of a recent series of investigations under the PBPA program (Miller et al. 2016). The 1,257-acre survey parcel included areas north and south of the Merchant village area and extended around the small playa west of the site. Multiple surveys conducted between 1983 and 2017 had recorded 19 prehistoric sites and one historic site within this survey parcel. A Transect Recording Unit (TRU) survey of the parcel resulted in the redefinition of these sites and their boundaries. A continuous distribution of artifacts and features was identified around the entire margin of the playa and connecting with the Merchant site, leading to the definition of a large site consisting of multiple village and camp localities. Six smaller sites were identified around the periphery of the main site area.

This government generated Section 110 report is a National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Section 110 inventory and evaluation of the numerous buildings, structures, and objects which constitute the Point Conception Light Station Historic District. The purpose of this study is to provide information for compliance with Section 110 of the NHPA of 1966, as amended, and to support the review of anticipated future activities conducted under Section 106 of the NHPA. Section 110 of the NHPA requires that federal agencies manage and maintain properties under their jurisdiction that are eligible for the NRHP in ways that preserve their historical, architectural, archaeological, and cultural values. This report provides the information needed by the California State Historic Preservation Officer to concur on the project findings and determinations for individual resources as presented by the Vandenberg Air Force Base Cultural Resource Manager. The report provides an inventory and evaluation of the numerous buildings, structures, and objects which constitute the Point Conception Light Station Historic District.

This document is a government generated Section 106 report consisting of a historic property inventory and an assessment of adverse effects associated with the Facility 15501 Renovation Project. The purpose of this document is to compile any prior or current studies performed in support of the Facility 15501 Renovation project as a single Section 106 report. This report provides the information needed by the California State Historic Preservation Officer to concur on the project findings and determinations for individual resources as presented by the Vandenberg Air Force Base Cultural Resource Manager. The report specifically examines project impacts and/or avoidance strategies for one built environment resource; Facility 15501.

During the week of August 27-31, 1990, Mobile District Archaeologists surveyed three tracts for the presence of cultural resources: the Interim Spin Test Facility, and the Missile Assembly Building Parking Lot. Centaur Processing Facility. The survey did not find any historic resources.

This document is a Section 106 Identification of Built Environment Historic Properties and Assessment of Effects for the Ground Bases Strategic Deterrent Test Program (GBSD). The project proposes to develop and test a new Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) system by utilizing and modifying existing ICBM infrastructure at VAFB. The proposed Ground-Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD) Test Program would develop and test a new ICBM system that would modernize the United States’ land-based nuclear arsenal for the purposes of replacing the existing Minuteman III ICBM system. This report concludes with analysis of the proposed project actions at each of the individually eligible resources, applies the criteria of effect as regulated at 36 CFR 800.5, and provides an opinion that the proposed GBSD Test Program would result in adverse effects to three of the four individually eligible historic properties: LF-26, LF-04, and MAF-D0.
