Abstract

Preliminary studies have been undertaken on the enzyme, glutamate mutase. Stereochemically pure (2S,3S)-3-ethylaspartic acid has been synthesized. The turnover of this substrate analogue by glutamate mutase has been investigated. Possible reaction products have been synthesized. (2S,3S)-[1',1',2',2',2'-2H]-3-Ethylaspartic acid has been prepared and a novel synthesis of [1-2H]-ethanol has been investigated with the aim of preparing (2S,3S)-[1'-2H]-3-ethylaspartic acid. In order to investigate the mechanism of elimination of ammonia from (2S,3R)-3-methylaspartic acid, by the enzyme 3-methylaspartase, stereospecific routes to (2S,3R)-3-methylaspartic acid and [3-2H]-(2S,3R)-3-methylaspartic acid have been explored. The compounds were obtained in high enantiomeric excess and with >97 % incorporation of deuterium into the latter. It has been demonstrated that 3-methylaspartase catalyses the direct elimination of ammonia from these substrates, presumably by a syn- elimination mechanism. The kinetic parameters, Vmax and Km, have been determined for both compounds at 1 and 50 mM potassium ion concentrations. A deuterium isotope effect on (D(V)) of 7.15 +/- 2.74 was measured for the reaction at 1 mM potassium ion concentration. A large D(V) of 6.79 + 0.92 was also observed at 50 mM potassium ion concentration, in contrast to results with the natural isomer which show the effect is completely suppressed at this potassium ion concentration. Values for D(V/K) were also obtained at 1 and 50 mM potassium ion concentrations. They were 3.39 +/- 1.6 and 4.10 +/- 1.3, respectively. The 15N isotope effect on V/K was measured at 1 mM potassium ion concentration. A value of 1.0028 +/- 0.0040 was observed for (2S,3R)-3-methylaspartic acid, and, a value of 1.0033 +/- 0.0043 observed for [3-2H]-(2S,3R)-3-methylaspartic acid.

13. Into the Unknown: A Critical Reflection on a Truly Global Learning Experience

Abstract

Over the past decade, industry relevance and connectedness have evolved into a key requirement for students and their parents, who increasingly perceive employability upon graduation as a critical factor in the degree selection process. Simultaneously, professional bodies emphasise the need for high levels of industry engagement as a condition for accreditation, which in turn further impacts on the "marketability" of a specific degree. However, many of the skills emphasised by potential employers and industry reference groups are more closely aligned with generic graduate attributes, rather than discipline specific knowledge and skills. This increasingly includes an emphasis on cultural awareness, excellent communication skills and the ability to work in dispersed, often even virtual teams. This observation is arguably particularly relevant within the business (degree) context, where workforces become increasingly multicultural, as traditional borders and limitations make way for transnational opportunities. This paper discusses the benefits and challenges associated with a third year student project that set out to combine the need for discipline specific knowledge, with the acquisition of versatile, culturally sensitive business skills. Students participating in the aptly titled "communications challenge" competed against their peers as part of multicultural teams, representing twelve countries, across five continents. The authors conclude that experiential learning opportunities like this global, real life client project may not necessarily be popular amongst the wider student cohort. Furthermore, the acquisition of discipline specific knowledge may be limited when compared to "traditional" teaching deliveries. However, projects like this provide a number of benefits, in particular in the context of capstone units that set out to prepare students for a diverse career in an increasingly global, multicultural and complex environment.

Abstract

Introduction Various forms of social media are used by many mothers to maintain social ties and manage the stress associated with their parenting roles and responsibilities. 'Mommy blogging' as a specific type of social media usage is a common and growing phenomenon, but little is known about mothers' blogging-related experiences and how these may contribute to their wellbeing. This exploratory study investigated the blogging-related motivations and goals of Australian mothers. Methods An online survey was emailed to members of an Australian online parenting community. The survey included open-ended questions that invited respondents to discuss their motivations and goals for blogging. A thematic analysis using a grounded approach was used to analyze the qualitative data obtained from 235 mothers. Results Five primary motivations for blogging were identified: developing connections with others, experiencing heightened levels of mental stimulation, achieving self-validation, contributing to the welfare of others, and extending skills and abilities. 16. Tourism as a transformative economic agent in regional Australia: a case study of operators' use of social media.

Abstract

Purpose: This study utilises a case study approach to explore how local tourism providers in the Shire of Collie, Western Australia (Collie), a coal-mining region, use social media to promote the providers' businesses and the destination. Design/methodology/approach: Semi-structured interviews with 11 local, small business tourism providers were conducted. These interviews explored the use of social media from local tourism providers' perspectives. Findings: The findings show that local tourism providers in Collie recognise the benefits of using social media for promotion, although there are some barriers when using social media. Barriers included insufficient time, difficulty in measuring the impact of social media and a lack of knowledge on how to use social media effectively. Participant benefits included reaching a wider audience and a "younger" demographic. Research limitations/implications: As a small regional destination case study, a limited number of tourism businesses were included in the study. Therefore, this study utilised Dickman's 5 A's of a successful tourism destination to encapsulate a robust representation of tourism businesses. Social implications: This study details the experiences of local tourism providers in a rural destination, providing insight into using social media to market a rural tourist destination. The study provides a methodology for application to other rural tourist destinations, particularly emerging tourism destinations, in order to understand how local tourism providers use social media. Originality/value: This study provides insights on local tourism providers' perspectives by detailing their experiences in a town and region transforming their tourism offering. The introduction of small-scale renewable energy sees mining communities' economic landscape changing. Further, opportunities for employment within the coal mining sector are declining and there is a need to develop new industry to support the economy. Tourism is an integral part of this transition in Collie. As professionals are aware, the transition to parenthood involves a steep learning curve for firsttime parents, as they adjust to myriad changes in their lives. With most adults now also using social media on a daily basis, usually through their mobile ('cell phone') device, the added impact of the ever-present hand-held 'screen to the world' has introduced new complexities into becoming a parent. This article outlines the key challenges and benefits related to social media use for parents. We also discuss parents' motivations to use social media and ways for practitioners to support parents. Abstract

Using hybrid toys to deliver physical therapy is an innovative way to engage children in personalised healthcare. However, there is an urgency to understand children’s needs in their digital-physical play experience, to effectively design these toys. The aims of this explorative study were to identify the needs of children in their play experience, and to examine co-creation workshops as a mean to do that. Ten children and thirteen observers participated. Participants were asked to reflect on what they like most about play, while building a hybrid toy and discussing the rationale behind their actions. The statements were written down by the observers and analysed via concept mapping and network analysis to categorise them. Finally, the children filled in a questionnaire after the session to assess the acceptance of the workshop. We have found that the identified needs can refer to different aspects from psychological to practical functionality, providing a wide panorama of requirements. The results of the questionnaire show that children enjoyed the topic, the use of technology and the process of co-creation. The combination of co-creation with concept mapping allows us to collect and categorise the identified needs to further develop future designs.

21. Calm the farm or incite a riot? Animal activists and the news media: A public relations case study in agenda-setting and framing

Abstract

The ideological differences between animal activists and primary producers are long-standing, existing long before the advent of social media with its widespread communicative capabilities. Primary producers have continued to rely on traditional media channels to promote their products. In contrast, animal activists have increasingly adopted livestreaming on social media platforms and ‘direct action’ protest tactics to garner widespread public and media attention while promoting vegetarianism/veganism, highlighting issues in animal agriculture and disrupting the notion of the ‘happy farm animal’. This paper uses a case study approach to discuss the events that unfolded when direct action animal activists came into conflict with Western Australian farmers and businesses in 2019. The conflict resulted in increased news reporting, front-page coverage from mainstream press, arrests and parliamentary law changes. This case study explores how the activists’ strategic communication activities, which included livestreaming their direct actions and other social media tactics, were portrayed by one major Australian media outlet and the farmers’ interest groups’ reactions to them.

Abstract

The latest episode of the ABC's investigative program, Four Corners, exposes cases of inappropriate and sexual comments made by men on online images of children, often posted on accounts run by their parents. The report highlights the existence of "kidfluencer" platforms, such as BrandArmy, where parents can monetize their child's online presence. BrandArmy has implemented guidelines to prevent sexually suggestive content, but Four Corners reported on accounts that appeared to offer bikini pictures to paid subscribers. The report also discusses the sexualization of children on Instagram and the need for policy changes and increased responsibility from platforms and governments to protect children online. Abstract

On May 21, 2015, The Guardian newspaper reported that TEDxSydney had designed a new national campaign to change social attitudes towards people living with disabilities (Davey, 2015). The campaign, announced at the Sydney Opera House, was due to be launched in December 2015 to coincide with the United Nations International Day of People with Disability and was framed as being in memory of Stella Young, a writer, comedian and disability advocate, who died in December 2014. Arguably it was an innovative campaign, with the potential to put disabilities on the social media map. As with many social campaigns at the time, the initiative was primarily built around a hashtag (#StellasChallenge) and sought to engage with both the disabled and the non-disabled. While the objective of the exercise was framed as "changing social attitudes", the subsequent engagement between the organisation, TEDxSydney, and representatives of the disabled community was arguably not what TEDxSydney had intended. Ironically, the campaign was said to be inspired by Stella, who had proclaimed that she despised "inspiration porn" related to those with disabilities (Davey, 2015). Using a case study approach methodology, this paper provides an analysis of #StellasChallenge to develop an in-depth understanding of what innovative engagement does - and importantly does not - mean in the digital public sphere, through the broad lens of health at the community, organisational and individual levels of society. The paper highlights the challenges inherent in the digital world when attempting to innovatively engage with publics on sensitive, complex and deeply personal issues, such as disability and more broadly health. It draws on theory and practice in digital advocacy, public relations, web communication, health communication, issues management and stakeholder and community engagement. In the spirit of innovation (the theme of the 2016 PRIA national conference and research symposium where an early version of this paper was presented), this paper includes first-hand insights and critical reflections by one of the activists who campaigned against the #StellasChallenge initiative. Abstract

Within public relations the questions of ethical theory and practice have been given new momentum with the rise of influencers in social media, such as bloggers, and the related phenomenon of stealth marketing. This paper explores the views of a specific community of these new influencers - so-called mum bloggers - following the call for more research in this area and with the theory of dialogic public relations as a start point. Taken from an online survey of Australian mum bloggers, the paper analyses the qualitative responses of 238 bloggers. Almost 70 per cent of respondents believe there are no ethical issues in blogging. A model of the determinants of relative house prices was formulated and used to obtain estimates of the importance of various aspects of the dwelling and its environment. Two estimation techniques were employed: multiple regression analysis and the method of principal components. The results of the two exercises are compared and the relative efficiency of theestimation techniques is assessed in relation to the problem of multicollinearity.
