The article is devoted to highlighting the role of Kostiantyn Shyshkin in the development of Soviet archaeological science. Attention is paid to the difficulties of perception by official archaeologists of numerous discoveries made thanks to the deciphering of aerial photography. The method of identifying archaeological monuments developed by this researcher is relevant to the present time and can be supplemented to a large extent by satellite image data. The name of K. Shyshkin is inextricably linked with the discovery of the proto cities of the Trypllia culture. Thanks to the analysis of articles and archival materials, it was found that the researcher had a great deal of experience in discovering monuments of the steppe regions of Ukraine. However, these materials are not yet available to a wide range of researchers

Since 2007 the Saudi-French Archaeological and Epigraphic Mission to Najrān (MAFSN) has been surveying the area of Ḥimā (north-east of Najrān); during these explorations, thousands of graffiti and rock art sites were recorded. In the 2020 and 2021 seasons, the MAFSN launched systematic archaeological surveys, test pits, and small-scale excavations, paying particular attention to the structures scattered throughout the plain and near the rocky outcrops. Here we report on the results of both these fieldwork seasons with a preliminary typology of the archaeological structures and a collection of archaeological finds. This is the first outcome of a wider and medium-term project that aims to draw a complete archaeological map of the area by combining field and remote-sensing data collection methods. Additionally, survey was conducted aiming at the identification of prehistoric sites around the Ḥimā region, which yielded a small number of prehistoric lithic scatters. Based on the technological and typological characteristics of the finds, an attribution to the earliest human occupations of the area, namely Lower and Middle Palaeolithic, is suggested. The spatial distribution of the archaeological structures will be compared with that of the rock carvings to identify possible correlations and to study the history of human settlement in the Ḥimā region in historical times up to the first centuries of Islam. An interdisciplinary study of the ancient landscape of the Trieste Karst (north-eastern Italy) is presented in this paper. Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) has been applied to obtain high-resolution topography of the 25 km2 investigated area in order to identify potential archaeological anomalies. The ALS-derived high-resolution Digital Terrain Models have been visualized and managed using QGIS and Relief Visualization Toolbox. Possible archaeological anomalies have been verified through field surveys and interpreted using a multidisciplinary approach mainly based on the collection of associated archaeological materials and geomorphological and stratigraphic evidence. From a methodological perspective, the elaboration and study of ALS-derived images, and in particular the local relief model visualization, combined with the collection of Roman shoe hobnails, have proven to be effective approaches for the certain identification and dating of Roman roads in karst environments. The obtained results have revealed an almost completely unknown Roman landscape: the investigated area was crossed by important public roads, whose layout has been accurately reconstructed for a total length of over 10 km, and occupied by large country estates, sometimes enclosed within boundary walls perfectly fitting the Roman land division grid. One of the identified buildings could correspond to a road station, perhaps the Avesica known from ancient itinerary documents—i.e., the itinerarium Antonini Augusti—due to its position and proximity to a major road junction. - Abstract
The information gathered, on the one hand, from the excavations carried out at the Roman villa of Almenara de Adaja-Puras and the archaeological analyses of various samples of sediment, starch and charcoal and, on the other, from the surveys carried out in the surrounding area, in a sector of the interfluve of the Rivers Adaja and Eresma of approximately fifteen km2 , provide new data on the rural occupation model of this particular sector of the territory in the civitas of Cauca. The characteristics of the archaeological finds associated with the deposits demonstrate that the occupation and exploitation of these lands was well established in the second half of the 1st c. AD, although it is very likely that it would have been initiated earlier, judging from the discovery at Almenara-Puras of some early structures and imported pottery, including Italic terra sigillata.

This article, based on the master’s thesis of the first author, aims to identify and classify by species different shellfish collected in a Vanuatu archaeological site. We want to analyse how these shells have been modified and utilized to produce furniture and artefacts. The results show that the Punangatu shell assemblage is dominated by Gastropods, in particular by the families of Turbnidae and Trochidae, which were easy and accessible to exploit. The two families are still consumed today. But the share of shellfish and the importance of fishing during the island’s initial settlement and over time remains unclear. It would be necessary in the future to study other sites of the island to better understand the societal role of marine resources.

The work deals with the publication of a rare bronze plaque discovered during the archaeological surveys of 2012–2013 in the upper reaches of the Kacha river in South-Western Crimea. The item was crafted by means of casting in a rigid die, and represents a four-petal plate with a loop soldered to the lower petal. The front surface features an image of a polymorphic creature – a dragon, and the back surface contains traces of solder with the remains of the bases of pins or stitch loops. It is assumed that the plate is a part of a military belt set of the Golden Horde period. These types of ferrules and plates with a dragon image made of precious metals, as well as bronze, horn and bone, have been found in the territory of the Golden Horde and the neighbouring territories and date back to the period of the 13th – 14th centuries. The stylistics of the mythical animal image on the plate from the vicinity of Verkhorechye accounts for its similarity to the images of dog-headed dragons in the fine art of Russian regions, but the design and construction features of our finding are characteristic of the items discovered in the Volga region.

In Misiones Province, Pre-Hispanic archaeological investigations have been discontinuous and show significative territorial biases. The lack of data in large unexplored sectors, has been supplemented with information extrapolated from other areas or by drawing inferences from ethnohistorical data. With the goal of reverting this trend, here we present the preliminary results of the first surveys developed in Moconá Provincial Park. Fieldwork was designed following the main geomorphological environments with the aim of gaining new and systematic information regarding variability and distribution of archaeological sites. We detected three new sites that represent different times of human occupation in the area, and recovered from them numerous lithic and pottery technological elements as well as charcoal remains. The analysis of these materials provides new data to discuss classical problems of Misiones archaeology such as the age of bifacial lithic tools usually known as “curved axes and cleaves” or the development of anthropic soils by guaraní populations., A arqueologia pré-hispânica de grande parte da província de Misiones apresentou um caráter descontínuo e com um desenvolvimento muito desigual ao longo do território. ARCHAEOLOGY , *LIDAR , *GROUND penetrating radar , *FORTIFICATION , *CHRONOLOGY , *ARMIES - Abstract
An interdisciplinary study of the archaeological landscape of the Trieste area (northeastern Italy), mainly based on airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR), ground penetrating radar (GPR), and archaeological surveys, has led to the discovery of an early Roman fortification system, composed of a big central camp (San Rocco) flanked by two minor forts. The most ancient archaeological findings, including a Greco-Italic amphora rim produced in Latium or Campania, provide a relative chronology for the first installation of the structures between the end of the third century B.C. and the first decades of the second century B.C. whereas other materials, such as Lamboglia 2 amphorae and a military footwear hobnail (type D of Alesia), indicate that they maintained a strategic role at least up to the mid first century B.C. According to archaeological data and literary sources, the siteswere probably established in connection with the Roman conquest of the Istria peninsula in 178-177 B.C. They were in use, perhaps not continuously, at least until the foundation of Tergeste, the ancestor of Trieste, in the mid first century B.C. The San Rocco site, with its exceptional size and imposing fortifications, is the main known Roman evidence of the Trieste area during this phase and could correspond to the location of the first settlement of Tergeste preceding the colony foundation. This hypothesis would also be supported by literary sources that describe it as a phrourion (Strabo, V, 1, 9, C 215), a term used by ancient writers to designate the fortifications of the Roman army. The area of the Gulf of Castellamare (western Sicily) is well known for the several roman kilns. The aim of this paper is to reconstruct the productive activity of a workshop mainly manufacturing tiles with ΟΝΑΣΟΥ stamps, probably dating between the 3rd and the 1st century B.C. The previous researches permitted to recognize Onasus Segestanus, mentioned in Cicero’s Verrines, as the producer of these tiles and to localize a possible workshop in the Bay of St Cataldo. The discovery of new stamped tiles and ceramics wastes assume considerable importance for an investigation focused on the ceramic workshops in the Gulf of Castellamare and the Bay of St Cataldo. The result is an up-to-date picture rich in research perspectives, concerning the Onasus’s trade expansion during the time and the productive activity of other kilns, whose artefacts could be exported or locally employed.

High-resolution subsurface imaging and topography estimation in deserts is very useful in many applications such as oil-field and ground-water explorations and archaeological surveys. To address this problem, we previously developed a subsurface imaging interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) concept that can estimate the subsurface topography. However, the image resolution of such a system is rather limited by the current techniques available for SAR focusing and InSAR image coregistration as the propagation effects and phase-front distortion caused by the top layer are not accounted for. In this paper, we discuss different image aberrations that result from the top-surface topography, including geometric and defocusing distortion. The issue created by subsurface caustics and their effect on SAR imaging are discussed. We then present a new approach to estimating and correcting such aberrations. By using simulations and measurements, it is shown that up to an order of magnitude improvement in the subsurface image resolution as well as significant improvement on subsurface interferogram coherence can be achieved. The proposed approach is based on the application of a previously developed subsurface inversion algorithm and a newly developed fast subsurface InSAR simulator. The results are verified numerically using 3-D simulations of different sand-dune geometries and an experiment using scaled-model measurements under laboratory conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This square is part of the urban area of Porto's historical zone, in which the coordination of the works of geophysical prospecting with archaeological ones was considered relevant. Thus, the former determined the location of the archaeological surveys, which, once completed, revealed a settlement sequence going from the 17th century to the 20th century, despite material remains dating back to Roman times. Today, this square is a mere flicker of the commercial and human bustle which the material memories cannot glorify. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

On the basis of archeological data presented in Finkelstein 2008, 8–13, it is concluded that the settlements of returnees listed in Ezra 2:20–30 and Nehemiah 7:25–33 reflect an actual socio-political reality of the late 6th century BCE. As Finkelstein draws the opposite conclusion on the basis of the same data, this study describes how he construed relevant data and evaluates the validity of his argumentation. Additionally, locations are proposed for some heretofore unidentified settlements, the complex literary history of the lists is examined, and how the vague term 'Persian Period' has confused both archaeological and historical discourses is explored. The history of Samaria under Neo-Assyrian rule is usually a part of the general description of the land of Israel and the Levant. From these descriptions it seems that the expansion of the Neo-Assyrian Empire in the region of Samaria is well documented in the various historical and archaeological sources of this period. Numerous studies were carried out about the historical and archaeological aspects of this period in the land of Israel. Nevertheless, much of this research dealt with Judah, and only few researches were conducted on the Samaria region. These studies described the Samaria region as a whole unit, and did not distinguish between sub-units within Samaria. In this paper I will examine the history of the Samaria region after the Neo-Assyrian conquest, the organization of the Assyrian administration, and the extent of its influence in various areas within this region, considering updated data from archaeological surveys and excavations.

The archive materials of the notable archaeologist, which have both scientific and private character, give us a possibility to reveal the traits of M.E. Foss’s personality. Her main features were diligence and self-control, multiplied by the ability to overcome difficulties with optimism. We can follow these dignities by her field notes, for example during the extremely difficult search trip to the White Sea shore in 1926 with her colleagues, during the cold northern summer, surrounded by wild animals, without guns. Some notes and drawings witness her perfect sense of humor. Exchanging letters with colleagues, local historians and museum employees, she frequently demonstrated the ability to give kind advice and friendly support, paying no attention to person’s position whether it was a student or an honored academician. She usually tried to stay away from the Soviet ideology restrictions both in her behavior and studies, and loved nature with all her heart, which is evident from her lyric fieldwork footnotes.

This article contains a report on the international conference organized by the University of Leiden in May 2015. According to its organizers, this conference has become the first Western European symposium dedicated to the study of the long history of the Golden Horde. The conference became a fruitful meeting place of the leading Russian and Tatar historians and archaeologists with their Western colleagues from the Netherlands, United Kingdom, United States of America, Hungary, Poland, and Finland. International participants of the Leiden conference discussed the most topical issues of historiography associated with eventful history of the Golden Horde. In particular, the conference participants paid special attention to the study of the administration of the ulus of Jochi that naturally combined governmental models of the Mongol Empire of the Chingizids with local administrative elements. A separate section of the conference was devoted to the analysis of the religious policy of the Golden Horde khans, where special attention was paid to the historiographical debate on the Islamization of the ulus of Jochi. The conference participants also paid considerable attention to the consideration of the material culture of the Golden Horde known both from written sources and, above all, from the materials of archaeological findings. Also, a number of reports of the conference was devoted to foreign and domestic policies of the Golden Horde rulers, at the same time reflecting the central geopolitical role of the ulus of Jochi on the Eurasian continent and the high level of civilization of the Golden Horde. The main achievement of the Leiden conference was a statement on the need of deeper study of the Golden Horde history in order to overcome a number of stereotypes regarding misconceptions of the ulus of Jochi represented as backward and parasitic State formation. The conference participants agreed in general opinion about the necessity of similar academic symposiums to intensify international contacts between researchers of the Golden Horde history.

This paper presents some results of research activities conducted during the 2005-2008 fieldwork campaigns in the ancient territory of Hierapolis in Phrygia (Denizli Province, south-western Turkey). The research aimed at reconstructing the ancient topography and settlement patterns of the territory (previously not studied) from the Prehistoric times to the Ottoman age. During the archaeological surveys in the study area (the north-eastern sector of the Lykos valley and the Uzunp?nar plateau), some ancient villages of different dimensions in use between the Hellenistic age and the Roman Imperial period (some also in the Byzantine period) were identified and studied. In some cases, even their necropoleis were identified and documented, recording the types of tombs (tumuli, chambers, sarcophagi, chamosoria, pit graves) and their location in relation to the settlement area and the topography of the site. The collected funerary evidence is important new documentation to add to our knowledge of the necropoleis in ancient rural villages of southern Phrygia. It is also very interesting to note the presence, in some necropoleis, of isolated Hellenistic tumuli that could have belonged to the dominant classes of the rural communities, which had adopted the funerary typologies of the urban aristocracy.

The paper concerns some results of the research activities conducted during 2005-2007 in the ancient territory of Hierapolis in Phrygia, completing the reconstruction of the ancient topography and settlement from the Prehistoric to the Ottoman age. During archaeological surveys in the area surrounding the city, in the Lykos valley, and also more distant, on the broad plateau north of Hierapolis (between 5 and 17 km from the city), some isolated as well as grouped together tumuli of the Hellenistic and Early Imperial periods were found and studied. These tumuli belonged to rural villages of the indigenous populations that lived in the area south of the Meander river and constitute an important and new documentation of the characteristics of this burial type in southern Phrygia. In general, they have the same size and building characteristics as those in the necropoleis surrounding the city, but the ones on the plateau have less refined chambers and no remains of the crepidoma are preserved. Presumably, they belonged to the dominant classes of the rural communities which had adopted the funerary typologies of the urban aristocracy; perhaps these tumuli can also be considered as landmarks of the occupation of the chora by the Greek colonists that founded Hierapolis.

The U.S. Air Force proposed to construct an equipment storage building on a 1-acre parcel located northwest of the intersection of Pole Line and Artillery Roads at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. Because the proposed project included federal funds and lands, it qualified as an undertaking under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), U.S. Code (USC) Title 54, Section 306108 (54 USC 306108); therefore, an identification-phase cultural resources survey of the project area was planned and completed in 2015 to comply with Section 106 regulations. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, on behalf of the 673d Civil Engineer Squadron, Conservation Section, contracted Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. (Jacobs) to perform a cultural resources survey of the property, designated as the Area of Potential Effect (APE) in this report.

The archaeological area of Pompeii (Naples, Italy) is worldwide known as one of the most remarkable examples of a Roman Empire town, but its origins are prior to the Roman age and there is a huge archeological interest in discovering the history of the forma urbis. With respect to this framework, the paper presents results achieved by Microwave Tomography enhanced Ground Penetrating Radar surveys carried out in the Centaur's Domus - Regio VI, one of the most ancient housing area of Pompeii. The GPR prospections aimed at addressing and driving the archeological excavation campaign performed in this area in October 2010. The results of the stratigraphic assays are herein taken into account to assess the reliability of the achieved tomographic images.

- Abstract
During the period between October 1989 and April 1990, Coastal Environments, Inc. (CEI), conducted archaeological surveys and evaluations within four construction areas near Fort Jackson, Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. This work was done for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District, as a part of the development of the New Orleans to Venice Hurricane Protection Project. The archaeological survey of Area B, located east of Fort Jackson, recovered numerous artillery shell fragments related to the Civil War bombardment of Fort Jackson. An evaluation of the site and its artifacts determined that the area had been extensively impacted by previous collecting activities, and the area had little further research potential. Area C, which parallels the southern right-of-way of Louisiana Highway 23 south of Fort Jackson, was also investigated. Reported concentrations of small arms projectiles and artillery round fragments were not verified by the present investigations, and no other potentially significant cultural resources were encountered. The undisturbed portions of Area D, which consist of a narrow corridor between the toe of the existing levee and an exterior drainage ditch, was also surveyed. Three whole artillery rounds and three fragments were found, but they provide little distributional data that could be used to address research questions. The fourth, and last construction area surveyed was Area E, located a short distance upstream from Fort Jackson.
