Using 1929 aerial photos of western Santa Cruz Island, we identified numerous potential shell midden locations, followed by confirmation of site locations via field reconnaissance. Heavy grazing by sheep, cattle, and pigs closely cropped island vegetation in the early twentieth century, exposing shell middens now often covered with thick vegetation. We discuss the potential and limitations of early aerial photos as aids to archaeological site identification and management in island and coastal settings. Although results varied from island to island, we found historic aerial photos to be extremely useful for documenting previously unrecorded sites on Santa Cruz Island, ranging from historical EuroAmerican sites to Island Chumash sites dating to as much as 7250 cal BP. These methods may also be applicable to other islands around the world subject to heavy livestock grazing in the past, especially where introduced animals have been removed and recovering vegetation now obscures archaeological sites. Despite the arguments in favour of oblique photographs acquired during observer-directed reconnaissance sorties, many aerial archaeologists have extracted much valuable information from verticals generated during total coverage mapping surveys. This paper looks at one of these arguments: the issue of anisotropic surface reflectance, which is responsible for the allegedly superior rendering of (mainly) vegetation and shadow marks when observed from certain oblique viewpoints. However, after a theoretical and practical assessment of the Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) of vegetation, it becomes clear that nadir views provide a more than satisfying alternative to the extremes of an oblique approach. - Abstract
Systematic field survey of Vrbovec surroundings started in 2014 to gain more archaeological insight into an area which has barely been ex plored. Reconnaissance included two minicipalities: Vrbovec and Preseka. The focus of the interest was aimed at medieval sites, especially fortified ones. We would like to point out the discovery of Dijaneško fort, previously unknown in literature, south of Dijaneš village. The central highrise is circular to oval in shape and measures around 60 meters in diameter, ris ing above the surrounding area by circa 80 centimeters. A moat, partially filled with water, is 20 meters wide. Rampart is either lowered or it did not exist at all. This lowland fort was probably a fortified noble seat in the late 15th or early 16th century. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The City of Phoenix (COP) Aviation Department has prepared a Comprehensive Asset Management Plan (CAMP) Short Range Development Plan for the Sky Harbor International Airport (Sky Harbor) in Phoenix, Arizona, to guide development at the airport over the next 20 years (herein referred to as the Sky Harbor CAMP Project). The plan proposes improvements to the airfield and the construction of two new Crossfield Taxiways, expansion of the passenger terminal, a grade change of the Union Pacific Railroad within the study area, development of a North Cargo Area, and redevelopment of the South Area. Implementation of the Sky Harbor CAMP Project requires the approval of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Federal Railroad Administration. The FAA must approve the changes to the airport layout and the use of federal funds; the Federal Railroad Administration must approve the use of federal funds. Because federal decisions are needed, the project is subject to compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA). The COP Aviation Department is currently preparing an environmental assessment to disclose the potential impacts of the plan for compliance with NEPA. SWCA Environmental Consultants (SWCA) was tasked with identifying historic properties within the APE to assist the FAA and the COP to comply with NEPA and NHPA review responsibilities. Historic property identification for the Sky Harbor CAMP Project was conducted in several stages, including background research, archaeological reconnaissance, and an architectural survey of the built environment. Because the planning period for the Sky Harbor CAMP Project extends to 2030, properties constructed up to 1980 would reach historic age by that time. Therefore, evaluating properties constructed up to 1980 (i.e., pre-1981) considers the 10-year lifespan of the Sky Harbor CAMP Project as a whole.

The authors summarize and systematize data on Neolithic cultures in northeastern Europe. It is a modern territory of the Komi Republic, the northern part of the Perm Territory, the Vologda and Arkhangelsk Regions, and the Nenets Autonomous Okrug. Based on the critical analysis of evidences, their analysis and interpretation, the authors present their views on the features of the formation, development and fate of the Neolithic cultures of the region. It has been established that the studied region contains northern and northeastern provinces of the famous cultures of the early and middle Neolithic of Eastern Europe: Verkhnevolzhskaya, Kamskaya, Lyalovskaya and Kargopolskaya. In addition, fragments of some cultures were identified. Their initial areas of formation are not yet reliably determined. They are represented by early Neolithic sites such as Dutovo 1, Chernoborskaya III, Enty IА and Chyornaya Vadya. Some types of pottery without a specific context document the presence of population groups in northeastern Europe whose status has not been defined yet. The authors suggest that the formation of Neolithic cultures in the region is associated with the search for undeveloped feeding areas, their development and short-term exploitation by small groups of people commensurate with elementary or unified families. Until the Eneolithic in the greater territory of northeastern Europe the conditions for long-term residence of the Neolithic population were absent as well as the formation of local traditions.

I тыс. до н. э., The paper presents results of archaeological reconnaissance of the North Caucasus archaeological expedition in the alpine areas of the Aibga Range (the Adler district of the Krasnodar region) in 2015 in the course of which 14 sites of the atsanguar type were examined such as Kamennyy Stolb (Stone Pillar) I–VII, Chernaya Piramida (Black Pyramid) I–IV, VII–IX. The paper contains brief descriptions of the sites and concludes that the sites can be divided into four types based on their size and design characteristics. The groups of atsanguars known as «Stone Pillar I» and «Black Pyramid I» are the most spectacular architectural ensembles. Archaeological bores drilled at the site yielded small but impressive ceramic artifacts, which, in terms of their quality and quantity, are similar to the finds at atsanguars examined earlier in Abkhazia and dated, in the view of researchers, to the second half of 1000 BC., №252 (2018)
