Abstract

[EN] To determine the digestibility variability of beet pulps (BP) in the nutritional value of diets for fattening rabbits, the substitution of 20 % of a control feed with BP from five different origins was evaluated. Rabbits of 42 days of age and 1.49 ± 0.208 kg of weight were used, housed in individual cages and with ad libitum feeding. The digestibility of feed components was determined by the conventional in vivo method of total fecal collection. The digestibility of each of beet pulps was determined by the substitution method. There was no effect of the substitution of components of the control feed with 20 % of BP from different sources in the voluntary intake of rabbits (P> 0.05). The inclusion of BP in diets increases the digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, gross energy and all fibrous fractions, and decreases the digestibility of crude protein. Abstract

[ES] Se caracterizó la composición química de pulpas de remolacha granuladas, procedentes del norte y sur de España, cosechadas en invierno y verano, respectivamente. La composición química y el contenido de ácidos grasos y aminoácidos de 12 muestras de pulpa de remolacha se compararon agrupadas según su procedencia. Las pulpas de invierno y verano difirieron en el contenido en cenizas insolubles (P<0.05), fibra detergente neutro (P<0.05), fibra soluble en detergente neutro (P<0.01) y almidón (P<0.01). El contenido en proteína bruta y aminoácidos fue bajo, así como el de grasa, cuyos ácidos grasos más representativos fueron linoleíco, palmítico y oleico, y en ningún caso mostraron diferencias entre grupos. El análisis de los componentes principales indicó que la fibra soluble en detergente neutro y los componentes fibrosos insolubles (fibra detergente neutro y fibra detergente ácido) explican 61.6 % de la variabilidad en la composición de la pulpa de remolacha. Se concluye que la pulpa de remolacha procedente de la industria azucarera de España es un subproducto que aporta alto contenido de fibras, solubles como insolubles, aunque es importante tipificar la naturaleza química de estos componentes fibrosos, dada su variabilidad según el origen., [EN] The chemical composition of granulated beet pulps, from the north and south of Spain, harvested in winter and summer, respectively, was characterized. The analysis of the main components showed that the fiber soluble in neutral detergent and the insoluble fibrous components (neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber) explain 61.6 % of the variability in the beet pulp composition. It is concluded that beet pulp from the sugar industry in Spain is a by-product that provides high fiber content, soluble as insoluble, although it is important to typify the chemical nature of these fibrous components, given their variability according to origin.

The content of crude protein and amino acids was low, as well as that of fat, whose most representative fatty acids were linoleic, palmitic and oleic, and in any case showed differences between groups. The analysis of the main components showed that the fiber soluble in neutral detergent and the insoluble fibrous components (neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber) explain 61.6 % of the variability in the beet pulp composition. It is concluded that beet pulp from the sugar industry in Spain is a by-product that provides high fiber content, soluble as insoluble, although it is important to typify the chemical nature of these fibrous components, given their variability according to origin. Abstract

This paper studies the main effects of the short sales ban implemented in August 2011 in the Spanish stock market along two dimensions: financial stability and market performance. Regarding the first, we show that short positions were a significant determinant of the probability of default of medium-sized banks before the ban. We find that, by weakening the contagion effect coming from the sovereign risk, the ban helped stabilise the probability of default of medium-sized banks, an effect which is not significant in the case of the largest banks and non-financials. Nonetheless, the stabilising power of the ban came at the cost of a large decline in the relative liquidity, trading volumes and price information efficiency of medium-sized banks stocks.

Emergency of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus infections in a teaching hospital in Chile An active surveillance of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) intestinal colonization in selected group of patients has been developed in Chile since year 2000. Nevertheless, no reports of clinical cases have been published. Aim. To describe main clinical and microbiological features of patients infected by VRE in a tertiary-level teaching Hospital. Patients and methods. Intestinal and clinical samples positive to VRE were provided by laboratory, and a retrospective analysis of potential risk factors, clinical features, treatment and outcomes was performed. Study encompassed years 2001 to 2006. Main results. 23 cases of infections were identified, all cases occurring during 2005 and 2006. Incidence rate was 0.07 and 0.09 cases per 1000 occupied bed-days, respectively. The mean age was 62.0 ± 17 years. A significant proportion of patients had cancer (39.1%), recent surgical procedures (54.1%), were on dialysis (26.1%), or were using steroids (26.1%). Most patients had received 2 or more antimicrobial (87%), almost a third represented transfers from other hospitals and an additional 22% readmissions before 30 days of latest discharge. Patients were mainly hospitalized in the ICU (60.9%) but nearly 30% were associated exclusively to nephrological or onco-hematological wards. Clinical manifestations included bacteremia (30.4%), surgical site infections or abscesses (26.1%), urinary tract infections (26.1%) and others. . Three patients (13%) did not have symptoms. After identification was possible, all isolates were identified as E. faecium (82.6% of total), the rest as Enterococcus sp. Most strains showed intermediate susceptibility to vancomycin (66.7%). For 14 strains studied both with vancomycin and teicoplanin, , phenotype Van B was predominant (85.7%), followed by VanA (7.1%) and VanB/VanD type (7.1%). No molecular studies were performed. Fifteen patients (65.4%) received a surgical and/or medical treatment. A favorable response was observed in 80% of these cases. Eight patients were not treated (34.8%), in 2 cases because of a rapidly-fatal infection. The global risk-fatality ratio for VRE infections was 13% and increased to 42.9% in patients with bacteremia. Microbiological eradication was documented in 52.2%.

Introducción. En Chile, se desarrolla una vigilancia activa de portación intestinal de Enterococcus resistente a vancomicina (ERV) desde el año 2000. Sin embargo, no hay publicaciones sobre casos clínicos. Objetivo: Describir casos de infección por ERV en un hospital de nivel terciario. Pacientes y Método: Se obtuvieron de los registros del laboratorio las muestras clínicas o intestinales positivas para ERV (2001 al 2006) y se analizaron en los pacientes afectados los factores de riesgo potenciales, manifestaciones clínicas, tratamiento y evolución. Resultados: Se identificaron 23 casos (tasa de incidencia año 2005 de 0,07 y año 2006 de 0,09/1.000 días camas ocupadas). El promedio de edad fue 62,0 ± 17 años. Antecedentes: cáncer (39,l%o), procedimientos quirúrgicos recientes (54,1%), hemodiálisis (26,1%), corticoterapia (26,1%). El 87%o había recibido dos o más antimicrobianos, casi un tercio fue transferido desde otros hospitales y 22% había reingresado antes de 30 días. Los pacientes habían estado principalmente en UCI (60,9%), el resto en salas nefrológicas u onco-hematológicas. Los cuadros clínicos incluyeron bacteriemias (30,4%), infecciones del sitio quirúrgico o abscesos (26,1%), infecciones urinarias (26,1%) u otros. Tres pacientes fueron asintomáticos (13%). Los aislados fueron identificados como E. faecium en 82,6%o del total, el resto como Enterococcus sp. El 66,7%o de las cepas mostró susceptibilidad intermedia a vancomicina. En 14 cepas con estudio completo para vancomicina y teicoplanina, predominó el fenotipo VanB (85,7%), seguido de los fenotipos VanA (7,1%) y VanB/VanD (7,1%). Quince pacientes fueron tratados en forma médica o médico-quirúrgica, hubo respuesta favorable en 80%o de ellos. Ocho pacientes no recibieron tratamiento (34,8%), en dos casos por una evolución fulminante. La letalidad global fue de 13% y de 42,9%o en el subgrupo con bacteriemia. La erradicación microbiológica se documentó en 52,2%o y en el resto no fue evaluable. Abstract

The ore in the Huanuni mine is composed of cassiterite as the economic mineral which is mainly associated with pyrite, pyrrhotite, quartz and tourmaline. The density spectrum showed two distinct fraction groups, one of +3.2 g/cm3 and the other of -2.9 g/cm3, with lack of intermediate density fractions between them. The heavy group is composed mainly of sulphides-cassiterite, and the light group of quartz and clay. Thus densities of about 3 g/cm3 could be considered as a guide condition for the separation of sulphides-cassiterite rich fractions from the quartz rich fractions. Secondary inclusions along a healed crack show a wide range of filling temperatures but a narrow range of salinities. This would suggest that the inclusions were trapped from similar solution in different gas/liquid ratios, due mainly to boiling of the ore forming fluid. The mode of occurrence of the fluid inclusions indicates that the fluid boiled frequently at all stages of mineral deposition. Since the lowest filling temperature of those inclusions would be close to the trapping temperature, it is concluded that the forming temperatures in the early and late vein stages were about 350 and 100 degrees C respectively. Abstract

We analyse the extent to which prices in the sovereign credit default swap (CDS) and bond markets reflect the same information on credit risk in the context of the current crisis of the European Monetary Union (EMU). We first document that deviations between CDS and bond spreads are related to counterparty risk, common volatility in EMU equity markets, market illiquidity, funding costs, flight-to-quality, and the volume of debt purchases by the European Central Bank (ECB) in the secondary market. Based on this we conduct a state-dependent price-discovery analysis that reveals that the levels of the counterparty risk and the common volatility in EMU equity markets, and the banks agreements to accept losses on their holdings of Greek bonds impair the ability of the CDS market to lead the price discovery process. On the other hand, the funding costs, the flight-to-quality indicator and the volume of debt purchases by the ECB worsen the efficiency of the bond market.

Abstract

Suicide in young people is a public health problem. Typically, protective factors for suicide are not studied; research tends to focus on measuring risk factors. However, knowing the risk factors does not mean that we also know the opposing factors that influence a group's health problems. For this reason, we examined the relationship between developmental assets in Mexican youth aged 18 to 25 years who are not at risk for suicide, exhibit self-injurious behavior, and whose last suicide attempt had low or high lethality. A cross-sectional study of 478 young people (73% female and 27% male) from Mexico City was conducted using an online survey and correlations were tested with dummy variables (groups) and multinomial logistic regression. The no-risk group showed associations with all developmental assets, the self-injurious group had an association with the house rules variable, the low lethality group was correlated with twelve assets and the high lethality group with four assets. Four internal developmental strengths were significant in the regression model: avoidance of risk behaviors, school expectations, resistance to pressure, and expression of anger. These results suggest that PYD is a useful framework for examining suicide risk and promotes skill development in young college students.

28. Effect of Dietary Level of Beet Pulp, with or without Molasses, on Health Status, Growth Performance, and Carcass and Digestive Tract Traits of Rabbits.

Abstract

To evaluate the effect of dietary level of beet pulp, with or without molasses, on growth performance, a total of 470 28-day-old rabbits were used (614 ± 6 g). Animals were randomly allocated into five dietary treatment groups: Control, without beet pulp; BP20, and BP40 with 20 and 40% of beet pulp without molasses, respectively; and BPM20 and BPM40, with 20 and 40% of beet pulp with molasses, respectively. Daily feed intake (DFI) and average daily gain (ADG) were controlled at 28, 49, and 59 days of age. Carcass and digestive tract traits were also determined at 59 days of age. Mortality and morbidity were controlled daily. Mortality during the growing period was higher in BPM than in BP groups (+9.2%; p < 0.05). The higher the inclusion of beet pulp, the lower the DFI and ADG of animals (5.5 and 4.6% for every 20% inclusion, respectively; p < 0.001), as well as the dressing out percentage, the liver proportion, and the dissectible fat percentage of their carcasses. However, the best feed efficiency during the last 10 days was obtained with the BPM40 group. The higher the inclusion of beet pulp, the higher the weight of the empty gastrointestinal tract and cecum (+2.4 and +3.0 percentage points for every 20% inclusion, respectively; p < 0.001). In fact, a higher inclusion of beet pulp decreased the pH and dry matter and decreased the total volatile fatty acids content of cecum richer in acetic acid but poorer in propionic, isobutiric, isovaleric, and valeric acids. Stomach weight was lower, and the capric acid content in the cecum was higher in the BPM than in the BP group. The inclusion of beet pulp in the feed reduced the growth performance and carcass yield of growing rabbits, and an even higher incidence of digestive disorders was observed when beet pulp included molasses., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflicts of interest.

Abstract

This multicenter clinical study was aimed at conducting a targeted pharmacogenomic association analysis of residual on-clopidogrel platelet reactivity in 474 Caribbean Hispanic patients. Platelet reactivity was measured using the VerifyNow P2Y12 assay and clopidogrel resistance was defined as P2Y12 reaction units (PRUs) greater than or equal to 208. Genotyping was performed using the whole-genome Infinium MEGA BeadChip array. An ancestry-adjusted, weighted polygenic risk score (wPGxRS) was developed to account for the effect of multiple variants on PRU and compared between clopidogrel responders and nonresponders. The mean PRU across the study cohort was 173.8 ± 68.5 and 33.5% of patients were defined as clopidogrel resistant. Multivariate linear regression showed that 19% of PRU variability was attributed to nine independent predictors, with CYP2C19*2 (rs4244285) accounting for ~ 7% of observed PRU variation (p < 0.001). PON1 rs662, ABCB1/MDR1 rs2032582, PEAR1 rs12041331 carrier status, and the interaction between African ancestry and rs12041331 carriers also predicted PRU among the participants (p ≤ 0.05). A clear gene-dose effect was detected between PRU and CYP2C19*2 genotype, consistent with previous studies in European patient populations, as well as rs12777823. Importantly, a significant positive correlation was detected between our novel wPGxRS (4 variants) and PRU among the Hispanic patient population (r p  = 0.35, p < 0.001). Moreover, the wPGxRS discriminated between nonresponders and responders (p = 0.003), indicating that this multigene-based score is a useful predictor of clopidogrel resistance among Caribbean Hispanics. Abstract

Vitellogenesis in oviparous vertebrates is a critical marker of the restart of seasonal reproductive activity. During this process of multihormonal regulation, females allocate a considerable amount of organic and mineral reserves to the synthesis of yolk, with changes in their plasma values. In this work, we determined plasma levels of various metabolites and steroid hormones throughout the reproductive cycle in females of Salvator merianae who developed vitellogenic and non-vitellogenic follicular cycles. We worked for two consecutive years with 20 adult females from the Experimental Hatchery of the Facultad de Agronomía y Zootecnia of the Universidad Nacional de Tucumán. Values of metabolites: glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol, calcium, phosphorus, albumin, total proteins, and hormones: estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone, were determined during the following stages of the annual cycle: hibernation, hibernation emergence, courtship-mating, oviposition, and incubation. Vitellogenic females showed significantly higher plasma levels of triglycerides, calcium, phosphorus, and albumin than non-vitellogenic females, mainly in the courtship-mating stage (advanced vitellogenesis). In contrast, annual cholesterol averages were lower in vitellogenic females. Glucose showed changes throughout the annual cycle regardless of the vitellogenic condition. Total proteins plasma levels had very few fluctuations during the cycle. Among the hormones studied, only testosterone showed differences related to vitellogenic condition, with higher levels in non-vitellogenic females during the entire reproductive cycle. The knowledge of these changes associated with vitellogenesis will improve zootechnical management and will allow optimizing the reproductive efficiency of Salvator lizards in captivity.

The effect of dietary inclusion of distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) on carcass and meat quality of longissimus muscle was studied in 100 growing rabbits from 28 to 59days old. Diets with no DDGS (C), barley (Db20), wheat (Dw20) and corn (Dc20) DDGS at 20% and corn (Dc40) DDGS at 40% were formulated. No effects on most of the carcass traits, texture and water holding capacity were found. Barley and corn DDGS led to a higher dissectible fat percentage. Meat redness was higher with Dw20 and pH was higher with Dw20 and Db20 than with Dc20. Protein and saturated fatty acids concentration declined as corn DDGS level increased. Dc40 led to the lowest saturated/unsaturated fatty acid ratio, atherogenic index and thrombogenic index. Abstract

The removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater by Lemna minor was studied both at laboratory and pilot scale. Laboratory tests were conducted under different conditions of initial Cr(VI) concentration (0.5 and 2.0 mg/l) and temperature (285 and 291 K). Batch experiments were carried out during 16 days in which the chromium concentrations, both in the biomass and in wastewater were measured. Data were used to characterize the biouptake capacity of the biomass; results showed that it increases with the temperature and when the initial Cr concentration decreases. The biouptake process could be fitted by an equation, with a correlation coefficient of 0.98. The removal process was assessed using the data of the variation of chromium concentration in the wastewater with respect to time; this allowed obtaining constant parameters which were applied in a mathematical model for the assessment of duckweed systems in a pilot scale plant.
