The Hebrew Bible and other ancient Near Eastern texts describe Egyptian, Aramean, Assyrian, and Babylonian military campaigns to the Southern Levant during the 10th to sixth centuries BCE. Indeed, many destruction layers dated to this period have been unearthed in archaeological excavations. Several of these layers are securely linked to specific campaigns and are widely accepted as chronological anchors. However, the dating of many other destruction layers is often debated, challenging the ability to accurately reconstruct the different military campaigns and raising questions regarding the historicity of the biblical narrative. Here, we present a synchronization of the historically dated chronological anchors and other destruction layers and artifacts using the direction and/or intensity of the ancient geomagnetic field recorded in mud bricks from 20 burnt destruction layers and in two ceramic assemblages. During the period in question, the geomagnetic field in this region was extremely anomalous with rapid changes and high-intensity values, including spikes of more than twice the intensity of today's field. The data are useful in the effort to pinpoint these short-term variations on the timescale, and they resolve chronological debates regarding the campaigns against the kingdoms of Israel and Judah, the relationship between the two kingdoms, and their administrations.

Sea level rise (SLR), driven by anthropogenic climate change, can be a major threat to coastal ecosystems. Among the most biologically diverse but SLR-threatened coastal ecosystems are rocky shores, especially in regions with a small tidal range. Nonetheless, the impacts of SLR on rocky shore biodiversity, community structure and ecosystem functions have rarely been studied. Here, we use the biogenic intertidal ecosystem, Mediterranean vermetid reefs on the Israeli coast, as case study for testing the potential impact of SLR on reef communities, with surveys, 3D topographic mapping plus SLR simulations, and a manipulative community translocation experiment. We show that: (1) biodiversity is much lower on very shallow, permanently submerged, horizontal rocky surfaces compared to that on intertidal reef platforms, (2) the extensive intertidal platforms will permanently drown under even modest SLR scenarios, (3) the rich intertidal community will transform, when permanently submerged, either to a very different but still rich community when protected from grazing by highly abundant invasive fish (rabbitfish), or to a much poorer turf community when exposed to such fish grazing, and (4) the reef community net production will drastically drop under permanent submersion. Because the main ecosystem engineer of the vermetid reefs, Dendropoma anguliferum (Monterosato, 1878), is nearly extinct in the southeast Levant, it is unlikely that new reefs will be formed higher on the shore in the future, presumably resulting in extensive coastal ecological shifts. Considerable coastal community shifts are forecasted for many regions globally due to SLR, as many shorelines are predicted to suffer from "coastal squeeze". Hence, similar manipulative experiments are encouraged in other regions to test for generality vs. context dependency in SLR ecological impacts. The hazard of toxemia, a condition resulting from the spread of toxins by the bloodstream, is regulated by plasma proteins capable of binding with free toxins. As toxin binding results in a reduction of available binding sites, measuring the proteins' binding capacity can be used to estimate toxemia severity. Suggested by this approach, a novel fluorescence method was developed to determine lipoprotein and albumin binding capacities in whole plasma. The method entails two steps: specific binding of N(n-carboxy)phenylimide-4-dimethyl-aminonaphthalic acid with albumin followed by addition of 12-(9-anthroyloxy)stearic acid which, under these conditions, binds mostly with lipoprotein. Reduced fluorescence intensity of the probes in plasma of patients compared to that of healthy donors reflected saturation of binding sites by toxins, thereby estimating toxemia severity. Poor correlation was found between the lipoprotein and albumin binding abilities, suggesting their independent diagnostic values. The simplicity and rapidity of this method are advantageous for its clinical application.

The mechanism underlying ATP-induced permeabilization of transformed mouse fibroblasts was studied by using nonhydrolyzable analogues of ATP. Incubation of 3T6 cells with 0.6 mM of either ATP, 5'-adenylyl imidodiphosphate (p[NH]ppA) or adenosine 5'-[beta, gamma-methylene]triphosphate (p[CH2]ppA) resulted in an increase of 17-, 8- or 5-times, respectively, in the cell membrane permeability, measured by the efflux of normally impermeant metabolites from the cells. The induced cell permeabilization was preceded by a reduction in the membrane potential (delta psi), determined according to the distribution of the cation tetraphenylphosphonium (TPP+) between the cells and the medium. Reduction of 26, 18 and 13 mV in delta psi was exerted by 0.6 mM of either ATP, p[NH]ppA or p[CH2]ppA, respectively. In 3T3 cells the untransformed counterparts of 3T6 cells, neither reduction of delta psi, nor alterations in membrane permeability were exerted by either ATP or by its analogues. The data indicate that the dissociation of the beta, gamma-phosphate bond is not essential for membrane permeabilization by external ATP, implying that the binding of ATP to the cell surface of transformed cells is sufficient to initiate the permeabilization process. The data also suggest that delta psi is involved in the control of membrane permeability.

Acetyl esterase (acetic-ester acetylhydrolase, EC 3.1.1.6) from bull testes was purified 325-fold by ammonium sulphate precipitation, chromatography on DEAE-cellulose, hydroxyapatite and finally, gel filtration on a Sephadex G-200 column. The purified enzyme appeared as a single protein band on native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and in isoelectric focusing (pI 5.25). In both methods, the activity coincided with the protein band. A single protein band corresponding to Mr 70,000 was obtained by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The reported amino-acid composition indicates that the enzyme contains three half-cystine residues, of which only one could be detected, by titration, as a free -SH group. No free amino terminal was detected by dansylation.
