The Executive Function is a set of cognitive processes that are developed from the earliest ages. Recent studies in children with disruptive behaviour disorders suggest the presence of effects on the executive functioning. The aim of this study is to know the association among symptoms of Attention Deficit with Hyperactivity Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and Conduct Disorder, and Executive Function in children from 3 to 6 years old. Method: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted. An assessment was performed on a sample of 444 subjects from Spain; it was made through an inventory for parents and teachers to estimate the capacity of Executive Function. Results: a relation between the symptoms of Attention Deficit with Hyperactivity Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Conduct Disorder, and the Executive Function deficit was found. The presence of symptoms of Attention Deficit with Hyperactivity Disorder inattentive type is associated with deficiencies in all areas of Executive Function, which does not occur with other symptoms. Conclusion: It is important to know the specific characteristics of each symptomatology by taking into account their executive functioning, in order to achieve accurate diagnoses in the clinical setting, as well as appropriate therapy according to the deficiencies presented by children

Conclusion: It is important to know the specific characteristics of each symptomatology by taking into account their executive functioning, in order to achieve accurate diagnoses in the clinical setting, as well as appropriate therapy according to the deficiencies presented by children.

The Attention Deficit with Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most prevalent disorders in childhood and is characterized by a marked deterioration in Executive Function. Executive Function is a crucial factor for the child to function and adapt to the demands of his/her immediate environment. Deficits in this functioning directly affect school performance, learning and socialization of children with ADHD, and are expressed in an emotional and behavioral dysregulation, difficult to initiate, plan and organize tasks, low cognitive flexibility, and deficits in working memory and in monitoring. Currently there is great controversy over the nosology of ADHD because of the high incidence of overdiagnosis and high comorbidity rates reported in recent years. The study of Sluggish Cognitive Tempo has acquired great importance. It is being studied to be defined and to understand its relationship with ADHD. In addition, authors distinguish and compare ADHD with Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), conduct disorder (CD) and the broad phenotype of Pediatric Bipolar Disorder (PBD). Recent research considered of great importance to knowing the neurocognitive characteristics of ADHD and comorbid disorders to improve their conceptualization and make accurate differential diagnoses. The general objective of this thesis was to study the executive function of children and adolescents with ADHD and other associated symptomatology, from preschool through the characterization of this functioning in adolescents with clinical diagnosis. To this end, three empirical studies were conducted: 1) the association between Executive Function and symptoms of ADHD, ODD and CD, in a Spanish population of 444 children between 3 and 6 years of age; 2) analysis of the direct effect of ADHD symptomatology and its two subtypes and the Sluggish Cognitive Tempo symptoms on Executive Function deficits in a clinical population of 76 children and adolescents; 3) the association between deficits in Executive Function and ADHD symptomatology and broad phenotype of PBD was analyzed through a structural equation model in the same clinical population. Results indicate that the symptoms of ADHD, ODD, and CD are associated with different Executive Function deficits. Thus, it was possible to distinguish the neurocognitive profiles associated with each group of studied symptoms in preschoolers. In the second study, it appeared that the presence of symptoms of Sluggish Cognitive Tempo involves deficits in Executive Function regardless of the symptoms of ADHD. That is, both symptomatologies promote executive impairment in children and adolescents. In the third study, children with ADHD have symptoms of neurocognitive profile different from that of children with symptoms of broad phenotype of PBD. Although both symptomatic groups share problems in behavioral inhibition and in cognitive flexibility, there are other executive difficulties making them different. As a conclusion, the different symptomatologies were associated with different patterns of executive functioning. Children with symptoms of inattention had more problems with Executive Function than other children. This can be observed from early age through adolescence. This information may be an additional contribution to the research concerned with providing an appropriate term to represent the group of symptoms of inattention. Early detection of executive deficits can help in achieving accurate diagnoses, provide guidance in developing appropriate instructional strategies and clinical intervention, and thus prevent the increase of these deficiencies and improve social and emotional skills of children with ADHD.

Very little is known about the differences of the neurocognitive functioning of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Paediatric Bipolar Disorder (PBD), since current studies do not agree on a differentiation of Executive Function (EF) between the two disorders. The aim of this study was to determine the EF deficits associated with symptomatology of ADHD and the PBD phenotype. Participants were 76 children/adolescents aged 6-17 years and their parents, submitted to a diagnostic interview and a tool for assessing EF, Behaviour Rating Inventory of Executive Function. Structural Equation Modeling was used to examine associations between symptoms of ADHD and the PBD phenotype, and the EF. A model for parents and a model for children/ adolescents were performed. The model indexes showed a satisfactory fi t. ADHD was found to be associated with deficits in all areas of EF, especially when the predominant symptom is inattention. The presence of symptoms of PBD phenotype was associated only with difficulties in fi nding new strategies to solve problems and inhibiting new behaviour. The article concluded that the presence of ADHD symptoms is associated with cognitive deficits different from those that may occur with PBD symptoms. It is advisable that professionals consider patients' neurocognitive profiles in order to achieve an appropriate differential diagnosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The BRIEF-P is one of the most used instruments to measure Executive Function (EF). This report is aimed at showing the psychometric properties of the Catalan version of it. To do this, a random cluster sampling was carried out in Osona (Catalonia), recruiting 417 teachers and 408 parents of children aged 3 to 6 years. As with the original instrument, results show that reliability is excellent and that girls have a better EF than boys in the following areas: Working Memory, Plan/Organize, and Inhibit. Since in some areas Catalonia's preschool children show EF values slightly better than those of the reference sample, a new scale for using it in this population is provided.
