The role of the edge stochastic layer on particle transport is addressed in DIII-D plasmas with applied resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) causing density pump-out (a term used to denote the density reduction at the top of the pedestal due to the applied RMPs). Using an analytical model that adds the stochastic parallel transport of electrons (Harvey et al 1981 Phys. Rev. Lett. 47 102) to the fluid equations, the ambipolar radial electric field and particle flux are calculated simultaneously. In this model the nonambipolar electron particle flux, driven by the stochastic magnetic field, is predominantly balanced by the nonambipolar perpendicular ion flux, driven by toroidal viscosity, across a narrow stochastic layer of order two percent of the plasma radius (0.98 < ψ n < 1). The model reproduces the level of density pump-out and its dependence on RMP amplitude near the separatrix for three plasma discharges for which the pedestal foot is at medium to high collisionality ( 2 ⩽ ν sep * ⩽ 30 ) . The experimentally observed and numerically tested inverse density dependence of density pump-out (Hu et al 2020 Nucl. Fusion 60 076001) is accurately captured by the model: an increase in collisionality with density in the pedestal foot results in a decrease in stochastic diffusivity, and hence a decrease in the level of pump-out.

The scale selection and feedback loops for the formation and sustainment of a mesoscopic staircase profile structure are investigated for drift wave-zonal flow turbulence. A mean field model derived from the Hasegawa–Wakatani system and including the evolution of mean density, mean vorticity and perturbed potential enstrophy (PE) is used. It is found that a quasi-periodic zonal staircase forms from self-sharpening of modulation. The principle feedback loop is through the nonlinear dependence of mixing length on electron density gradient, which enters by way of the potential vorticity gradient. Counterintuitively, shearing is not effective. Moreover, the number of steps in the staircase is sensitive to both the drive (production rate of PE and initial density gradient) and damping (flow viscosity and collisional diffusivity) factors. The minimal step scale is selected by competition between the initial density gradient and diffusive dissipation. Finite turbulence spreading is necessary to form the staircase, but moderate enhancement of turbulence spreading tends to wash out the pattern. The staircase retains a memory of its initial state. Both the mean shear and zonal shear affect the staircase evolution. A strong mean shear quenches the pattern by suppressing the drift wave turbulence. The implications of these findings are also discussed.

We observe the formation of a high-pressure staircase pedestal ($\ensuremath{\approx}16--20\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{kPa}$) in the DIII-D tokamak when large amplitude edge localized modes are suppressed using resonant magnetic perturbations. The staircase pedestal is characterized by a flattening of the density and temperature profiles in midpedestal creating a two-step staircase pedestal structure correlated with the appearance of midpedestal broadband fluctuations. The pedestal oscillates between the staircase and single-step structure every 40--60 ms, correlated with oscillations in the heat and particle flux to the divertor. Gyrokinetic analysis using the cgyro code shows that when the heat and particle flux to the divertor decreases, the pedestal broadens and the $E\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}B$ shear at the midpedestal decreases, triggering a transport bifurcation from the kinetic ballooning mode (KBM) to trapped electron mode (TEM) limited transport that flattens the density and temperature profiles at midpedestal and results in the formation of the staircase pedestal. As the heat flux to the divertor increases, the pedestal narrows and the $E\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}B$ shear at the midpedestal increases, triggering a back transition from TEM to KBM limited transport. The pedestal pressure increases during the staircase phase, indicating that enhanced midpedestal turbulence can be beneficial for confinement.

Pedestal collapse (i.e., the complete loss of the edge transport barrier (ETB)) in DIII-D H-mode plasmas occurs when resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) penetrate the steep gradient region at the plasma edge. Normally, RMP driven magnetic islands can occur at the top and bottom of the H-mode pedestal and these islands generate conditions consistent with edge-localized-mode (ELM) suppression and density pump-out, respectively, based on nonlinear two-fluid MHD simulations. In contrast, MHD simulations show that the steep pressure gradient region between the top and bottom of the DIII-D pedestal is generally immune to resonant field penetration due to large local E × B and diamagnetic flows. By this fortuitous circumstance, the edge-transport-barrier and H-mode confinement can be maintained while achieving ELM suppression. However, pedestal collapse can occur in DIII-D when the screening flows are inadequate to prevent field penetration in the steep gradient region of the pedestal. Non-linear two-fluid MHD simulations support the role of resonant field penetration in pedestal collapse for DIII-D H-mode plasmas with weak edge E × B and diamagnetic screening flows. ITER will likely have weaker edge screening flows than present experiments due to its much larger size, making it more susceptible to resonant field penetration in the steep gradient region of the pedestal. Analysis of model ITER equilibria demonstrates that resonant field penetration in the steep pressure gradient region is possible for RMP levels of the order required for ELM suppression. The effect of such penetration on the ITER pedestal will depend sensitively on the resulting degree of island overlap.

Direct measurements of deuterium main-ion toroidal rotation spanning the linear ohmic to saturated ohmic confinement (LOC-SOC) regime and with additional electron cyclotron heating (ECH) are presented and compared with the more commonly measured impurity (carbon) ion rotation in DIII-D. Main ions carry the bulk of the plasma toroidal momentum, and hence, the shape of the main-ion rotation is more relevant to the study of angular momentum transport in tokamaks. Both in the LOC regime and with ECH, the main-ion toroidal rotation frequency is flat across the profile from the sawtooth region to the plasma separatrix. However, the impurity rotation profile possesses a rotation gradient, with the rotation frequency being lower near the plasma edge, implying a momentum pinch or negative residual stress inferred from the impurity rotation that differs from the main-ion rotation. In the SOC regime, both the main-ion and impurity rotation profiles develop a deeply hollow feature near the midradius while maintaining the offset in the edge rotation, both implying a positive core residual stress. In the radial region where the rotation gradient changes most dramatically, turbulence measurements show that density fluctuations near the trapped electron mode (TEM) scale are higher when the rotation profile is flat and drop significantly when the plasma density is raised and the rotation profile hollows, consistent with instabilities damped by collisions. Linear initial value gyrokinetic simulations with GYRO indicate that the transition from LOC-SOC in DIII-D occurs as TEMs are replaced by ion temperature gradient (ITG) driven modes from the outer radii inwards as the plasma collisionality increases, Zeff decreases, and the power flow through the ion channel progressively increases due to the electron-ion energy exchange. Gyrofluid modeling with trap gyro-Landau fluid (TGLF) successfully reproduces the plasma profiles at key times in the discharge and in time dependent simulations with predictive TRANSP. TGLF indicates that in the LOC and SOC regimes as well as with ECH, subdominant modes are present and that the plasma is not in a pure TEM or ITG binary state, but rather a more subtle mixed state. Predictions of the main-ion rotation profiles are performed with global nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations using GTS and reveal that the flat rotation is due to oscillatory variation of the turbulent residual stress across the profile, whereas the deeply hollow rotation profile is due to a larger-scale, dipole-like stress profile. This Rapid Communication sets forth the mechanism by which mesoscale staircase structures condense to form macroscopic states of enhanced confinement. Density, vorticity, and turbulent potential enstrophy are the variables for this model. Formation of the staircase structures is due to inhomogeneous mixing of (generalized) potential vorticity (PV). Such mixing results in the local sharpening of density and vorticity gradients. When PV gradients steepen, the density staircase structure develops into a lattice of mesoscale "jumps" and "steps," which are, respectively, regions of local gradient steepening and flattening. The jumps then merge and migrate in radius, leading to the emergence of a new macroscale profile structure, so indicating that profile self-organization is a global process, which may be described by a local, but nonlinear model. This work predicts and demonstrates how mesoscale condensation of staircases leads to global states of enhanced confinement.

International audience; The relationship between the physics of turbulent transport of particles and azimuthal momentum in a linear plasma device is investigated using a simple model with a background density gradient and zonal flows driven by turbulent stresses. Pure shear flow driven Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities (k∥=0) relax the flow and drive an outward (down gradient) flux of particles. However, instabilities at finite k∥ with flow enhanced pumping can locally drive an inward particle pinch. The turbulent vorticity flux consists of a turbulent viscosity term, which acts to reduce the global vorticity gradient and the residual vorticity flux term, accelerating the zonal flows from rest. Moreover, we use the positivity of the production of fluctuation potential enstrophy to obtain a constraint relation, which tightly links the vorticity transport to the particle transport. This relation can be useful in explaining the experimentally observed correlation between the presence of E×B flow shear and the measured inward particle flux in various magnetically confined plasma devices.

In a recent kinetic model of edge main-ion (deuterium) toroidal velocity, intrinsic rotation results from neoclassical orbits in an inhomogeneous turbulent field [T. Stoltzfus-Dueck, Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 065002 (2012)]. This model predicts a value for the toroidal velocity that is co-current for a typical inboard X-point plasma at the core-edge boundary (ρ ∼ 0.9). Using this model, the velocity prediction is tested on the DIII-D tokamak for a database of L-mode and H-mode plasmas with nominally low neutral beam torque, including both signs of plasma current. Values for the flux-surface-averaged main-ion rotation velocity in the database are obtained from the impurity carbon rotation by analytically calculating the main-ion—impurity neoclassical offset. The deuterium rotation obtained in this manner has been validated by direct main-ion measurements for a limited number of cases. Key theoretical parameters of ion temperature and turbulent scale length are varied across a wide range in an experimental database of discharges. Using a characteristic electron temperature scale length as a proxy for a turbulent scale length, the predicted main-ion rotation velocity has a general agreement with the experimental measurements for neutral beam injection (NBI) powers in the range PNBI

We measure the decay of plasma waves to longer wavelengths, for both ”standard” Trivelpiece-Gould waves with vϕ≫v¯, and for the lower phase velocity “EAW” modes with vϕ∼v¯. These are θ-symmetric standing modes on pure ion or pure electron plasma columns with discrete wavenumbers kz = mz π/Lp. A large amplitude mz = 2 Trivelpiece-Gould wave causes phase-locked exponential growth of the mz = 1 wave when they are near resonant, at growth rates Γe ∝ δn2/n consistent with cold fluid theory. For larger detuning Δ ≡ 2f1−f2, mode amplitude A1 is observed to “bounce” at rate Δf, with amplitude excursions ΔA1 ∝ δn2/n also consistent with cold fluid theory; but A1 often exhibits a slower overall growth, as yet unexplained by theory. In contrast, a large amplitude mz = 2 EAW mode generally causes either strong phase-locked mz = 1 growth or no growth at all, apparently because the EAW “frequency fungibility” enables Δf = 0, and EAW mode damping is strong until the velocity distribution F(vphase) is “flattened.”

Recent completion of the thirty two channel main-ion (deuterium) charge exchange recombination spectroscopy (CER) diagnostic on DIII-D [J.L. Luxon, Nucl. Fusion 42 (2002) 614] enables detailed comparisons between impurity and main-ion temperature, density, and toroidal rotation. Sixteen sightlines cover the core of the plasma and another sixteen are densely packed towards the edge, providing high resolution measurements of the pedestal and steep gradient edge region of H-mode plasmas. The complexities of the Dα spectrum require fitting with a comprehensive model, as well as using iterative collisional radiative modeling to determine the underlying thermal deuterium ion properties. Large differences in the structure and magnitude of impurity (C6+) and main-ion (D+) toroidal rotation profiles are seen in the H-mode pedestal. Additionally the D+ temperature can be half the value of the C6+ temperature at the separatrix and shows more of a pedestal structure. Typically only the impurity properties are measured and the main-ion properties are either assumed to be the same, or inferred using neoclassical models, which require validation in the steep gradient region. These measured differences have implications for transport model validation, intrinsic rotation studies, pedestal stability, and the boundary conditions for scrape off layer and plasma material interactions studies.

The results of modeling studies of an enhanced confinement in the drift wave turbulent plasma of the CSDX linear device are presented. The mechanism of enhanced confinement is investigated here using a reduced 1D, time-dependent model, which illustrates the exchange of enstrophy between two disparate scale structures: the mesoscale flow and profile, and the turbulence intensity fields. Mean density, mean vorticity, and turbulent potential enstrophy are the variables for this model. Total potential enstrophy is conserved in this model. Vorticity mixing occurs on a scale length related to an effective Rhines' scale of turbulence, and shrinks as both density and vorticity gradients steepen. Numerical results obtained from solution of the model agree well with the experimental data from CSDX showing: (i) a steepening of the mean density profile, indicating a radial transport barrier formation, (ii) the development of a radially sheared azimuthal flow velocity that coincides with the density steepening and ini...

A simple 1D model is presented for the heating caused by cylindrically-symmetric plasma waves in a non-neutral plasma column due to the addition of a symmetric squeeze potential applied to the center of the column. We study this model by using analytical techniques and by using a numerical grids method solution, and we compare the results of this model to previous work (Ashourvan and Dubin (2014)). squeeze divides the plasma into passing and trapped particles; the latter cannot pass over the squeeze potential. In collisionless theory, enhanced heating is caused by additional bounce harmonics induced by the squeeze in the particle distribution, leading to Landau resonances at energies En for which the bounce frequency ωb(E) and wave frequency ωm satisfy ωm = nωb(En). As a result, heating is substantially higher than the case with no squeeze, even when ωm is much greater than the thermal bounce frequency ωb(T). Adding collisions to the theory creates a boundary layer at the separatrix between trapped and passing particles that further enhances the heating at small ωm/kmvs, where km is the axial wavenumber and vs is the velocity at the separatrix. However, at large ωm/vs, the heating from the separatrix boundary layer is only a small correction to the heating from collisionless resonances in the trapped particle distribution function.

We present a 1D theory, neglecting radial dependency, for the damping of cylindrically symmetric plasma modes due to a cylindrically symmetric squeeze potential Vsq(z), applied to the axial midpoint of a non-neutral plasma column. Inside the plasma, particles experience a much smaller, Debye shielded squeeze potential φ0(z) of magnitude φs. The squeeze divides the plasma into passing and trapped particles; the latter cannot pass over the squeeze. Both analytical and computer simulation methods were used to study a 1D squeezed plasma mode. For our analytical study, in the regime where qφs/T ≪ 1, we assume the trapped particle population to be negligibly small and we treat qφ0(z) as a pertubation in the equilibrium hamiltonian. Our computer simulations consist of solving the 1D Vlasov-Poisson system and obtaining the damping rate for a self-consistent plasma mode. We present measurements of bounce harmonic Landau damping due to z-variations in the plasma potential, created by an azimuthally symmetric “squeeze” voltage Vs applied to the cylindrical wall. Traditional Landau damping on spatially uniform plasma is weak in regimes where the wave phase velocity vph≡ω/k is large compared to the thermal velocity. However, z-variations in plasma density and potential create higher spatial harmonics, which enable resonant wave damping by particles with bounce-averaged velocities vph/n, where n is an integer. In our geometry, the applied squeeze predominantly generates a resonance at vph/3. Wave-coherent laser induced fluorescence measurements of particle velocities show a distinctive Landau damping signature at vph/3, with amplitude proportional to the applied Vs. The measured (small amplitude) wave damping is then proportional to Vs2, in quantitative agreement with theory over a range of 20 in temperature. We report the observation of a transport bifurcation that occurs by spontaneous self-organization of a drift-wave and shear flow system in a linear plasma device. As we increase the magnetic field above a threshold ( BCr = 1200 G), a global transition occurs, with steepening of mean density and ion pressure profiles, onset of strong E×B shearing, a reduction of turbulence, and improved turbulent radial particle transport. An abrupt transition appears in the graph of turbulent particle flux versus density gradient. Hysteresis in the density gradient further confirms this transport bifurcation. The total Reynolds work on the flow sharply increases above threshold. This correlates with the increase of density steepness, which suggests the Reynolds stress-driven flow that plays an essential role in density steepening and transport bifurcation. A change in turbulence feature from drift waves (DWs) to a mix of DWs and ion temperature gradients also coincides with the transport bifurcation. Interesting phenomena...

The nonlinear dynamics of a cylindrical pinion that is kept at a distance from a vibrating rack is studied, and it is shown that the lateral Casimir force between the two corrugated surfaces can be rectified. The effects of friction and external load are taken into account, and it is shown that the pinion can do work against loads of up to a critical value, which is set by the amplitude of the lateral Casimir force. We present a phase diagram for the rectified motion that could help its experimental investigations, as the system exhibits a chaotic behavior in a large part of the parameter space.

The lateral Casimir force is employed to propose a design for a potentially wear-proof rack and pinion with no contact, which can be miniaturized to nano-scale. The robustness of the design is studied by exploring the relation between the pinion velocity and the rack velocity in the different domains of the parameter space. The effects of friction and added external load are also examined. This paper considers the frequency, spatial form, and stability of nonlinear Trivelpiece-Gould (TG) waves on a cylindrical plasma column of length L and radius rp, treating both traveling waves and standing waves, and focussing on the regime of experimental interest in which L/rp≫1. In this regime, TG waves are weakly dispersive, allowing strong mode-coupling between Fourier harmonics. The mode coupling implies that linear theory for such waves is a poor approximation even at fairly small amplitude, and nonlinear theories that include a small number of harmonics, such as three-wave parametric resonance theory, also fail to fully capture the stability properties of the system. It is found that nonlinear standing waves suffer jumps in their functional form as their amplitude is varied continuously. The jumps are caused by nonlinear resonances between the standing wave and nearly linear waves whose frequencies and wave numbers are harmonics of the standing wave. We present a theory for increased damping of Trivelpiece-Gouid plasma modes on a nonneutral plasma column, due to application of a Debye shielded cylindrically symmetric squeeze potential φ1. We present two models of the effect this has on the plasma modes: a 1D model with only axial dependence, and a 2D model that also keeps radial dependence in the squeezed equilibrium and the mode. We study the models using both analytical and numerical methods. For our analytical studies, we assume that φ1/T≪1, and we treat the Debye shielded squeeze potential as a perturbation in the equilibrium Hamiltonian. Our numerical simulations solve the 1D Vlasov-Poisson system and obtain the frequency and damping rate for a self-consistent plasma mode, making no assumptions as to the size of the squeeze. As the technological advances lead to miniaturization of mechanical devices, engineers face new challenges that are brought about by the fundamentally different rules that apply at small scales. One of the biggest problems in small machines is the excessive wear of the many surfaces that work in contact with each other, which severely constrains the durability of such machine parts. Here, a force that is caused by the quantum fluctuations of electromagnetic field - known as the lateral Casimir force - is employed to propose a design for a potentially wear-proof rack and pinion with no contact, which can be miniaturized to nano-scale. We demonstrate that both uniform and harmonic lateral motion of the rack can be converted into unidirectional rotation of the pinion. The robustness of the design is studied by exploring the relation between the pinion velocity and the rack velocity in the different domains of the parameter space.
