Abstract

A series of 22 figured Phoeno-Punic and Roman terra-cottas, of high relevant archaeological and patrimonial values, have been studied. The samples were recovered in the Roman Theatre of Malaga (Spain). A thorough analysis including stereomicroscopy, elemental analysis by WDXRF, mineralogical analysis by XRPD coupled with the Rietveld method, and SEM, has been carried out. Highly diluted fused glass beads probed to be enough for the X-ray fluorescence analyses, minimizing the damage to the samples. For selected samples, in addition to the classical use of the Rietveld method, the G-factor external-standard approach has been employed to get full quantitative crystalline and amorphous phase analysis. The analytical results allow proposing a local regional provenance for the main part of the samples, being a relevant data for several artifacts, not contextualized due to stratigraphic alterations in the site. In addition, some relevant samples, for instance a theatrical mask fragment (TRC005), are likely foreign. The overall amorphous is not negligible in phase quantification, accounting for up to 50 wt %. Technologically, all terra-cotta samples are similar, made of calcareous clays, fired at ~700-950 ºC.Se han estudiado 22 terracotas figuradas feno-púnicas y romanas, de alto valor arqueológico y patrimonial. Las muestras proceden de las excavaciones del Teatro romano de Málaga (España). El análisis realizado incluye estereomicroscopía, análisis elemental mediante WDXRF, análisis mineralógico cuantitativo mediante el método de Rietveld de los datos de XRPD y SEM. Para minimizar el daño realizado a las muestras, se prepararon perlas muy diluidas, que han demostrado ser suficientes para los análisis de fluorescencia de rayos-X. Para muestras selectas, además del análisis usual mediante el método de Rietveld, se ha utilizado el método del estándar externo mediante el factor-G para obtener análisis cuantitativos de fases cristalinas y amorfas. Los resultados analíticos permiten proponer una procedencia local/regional para la mayor parte de las muestras, siendo esta información de gran interés para algunas piezas descontextualizadas debido a alteraciones estratigráficas en el yacimiento. Adicionalmente, algunas piezas relevantes, como un fragmento de máscara teatral (TRC005) son posiblemente piezas de importación. La cuantificación de la fracción amorfa indica que la magnitud de ésta no puede ser despreciada en las cuantificaciones, llegando a ser cercana al 50 wt %. Tecnológicamente, todas las terracotas son muy similares, fabricándose en arcillas calcáreas cocidas entre unos 700 y 950 ºC.

2. Archaeometric characterization of Terra Sigillata Hispanica from Granada workshops

Abstract

Terra Sigillata was a Roman pottery, which was also produced in several workshops in Hispania. Two known workshops at Granada (Cartuja and Carmen de la Muralla, or Albayzin) are known to have produced both typical Terra Sigillata and low-gloss coating related pottery. Potsherds from these workshops have been thoroughly studied from an archaeological approach, but not by analytical chemistry techniques. Here, we report a full characterization of nine selected samples from these workshops and also a tenth sample, Terra Sigillata made in the Gaul, for comparison. The pastes characterization includes elemental analysis from XRF and quantitative mineralogical analysis by Rietveld analysis of XRPD data. Cluster analysis to both types of data has been carried out. SEM-EDX and GI-XRPD have been used to characterize the slips of the pottery. The elemental analysis results for the pastes suggest that terra sigillata potsherds from both workshops were likely made from the same clay, different to that used to make the low-gloss coating pottery. The firing temperatures have been estimated from the phase assemblages being about 900-950ºC for the Granada sigillata.La Terra Sigillata fue una cerámica romana, que se produjo también en varios talleres en Hispania. Los talleres ubicados en Granada (Cartuja y Carmen de la Muralla, o Albayzín) produjeron Terra Sigillata y cerámicas de barniz mate. Ambos talleres han sido ampliamente estudiados desde un punto de vista arqueológico, pero no mediante técnicas analíticas. En este trabajo, se estudian nueve muestras de estas producciones, y una décima de Terra Sigillata producida en la Galia, para su comparación. La caracterización de las pastas incluye análisis elemental por XRF, y análisis mineralógico cuantitativo mediante análisis de Rietveld de los datos de XRPD. Estos dos conjuntos de datos también se han evaluados mediante análisis de cluster. Los recubrimientos superficiales se han caracterizado mediante SEM-EDX y GI-XRPD. Los análisis sugieren que ambos talleres utilizaron probablemente la misma materia prima para la Terra Sigillata, y otra diferente en las cerámicas de barniz mate. Se ha estimado una temperatura de cocción para la Sigillata en el intervalo 900-950ºC.

Abstract

The casting of magnesium and potassium phosphate (KMgPO4•6H2O; K-struvite) cements becomes possible after the aqueous reaction between magnesium oxide and potassium dihydrogen phosphate. This reaction is quite exothermic and allows the resulting paste setting in just few minutes. Those cements, when are cast with magnesium oxides of high purity, are used to retain and encapsulate special residues and as repairing concrete mortar, as it is described in the bibliography. However, it is also possible formulate those cements using low grade magnesium oxides, which cost are nearly 10 or 15 times cheaper than those of high grade. The aim of this work is to evaluate the possibility of using low grade magnesium oxides (≈70% MgO), obtained from the calcinations process of natural magnesites, for KMgPO4•6H2O cement casting. The research and selection of the best formulation for obtaining that cement will be done also from the point of view of their mechanical properties as for their setting time.Es posible obtener cementos de fosfato de magnesio y potasio (KMgPO4•6H2O; K-estruvita), mediante la reacción en medio acuoso del óxido de magnesio y el dihidrogenofosfato de potasio, siendo ésta una reacción exotérmica muy rápida que permite el fraguado del material en pocos minutos. Estos cementos, formulados a partir de óxidos de magnesio de elevada pureza y coste elevado, se encuentran descritos en la bibliografía para su utilización en el encapsulamiento de residuos especiales y como morteros de cemento para la reparación de hormigón. Sin embargo cabe la posibilidad de poder formular este mismo tipo de cementos con óxidos de magnesio de bajo contenido, cuyo precio es del orden de 10 a 15 veces más barato que el óxido de magnesio de elevada pureza. En el presente estudio se evalúa la utilización de óxidos de magnesio de bajo contenido (≈70% MgO), obtenidos en el proceso de calcinación de la magnesita natural, para la formulación de cementos de K-estruvita. En este estudio se pretende determinar la formulación óptima de estos cementos a partir de la evaluación tanto de las propiedades mecánicas como de los tiempos de fraguado de las diferentes composiciones.

Abstract

The quaternary system CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-Fe2O3 has been taken into account to design five compositions of belite Portland clinkers with belite (Ca2SiO4) contents ranging from 60 to 65 wt%, located in its primary phase field of crystallization. The synthesis of these belite clinkers has been studied by high temperature microscopy, dilatometry, differential thermal analysis and thermogravimetric analysis. As a result, the optimum clinkerization temperature has been established at 1360 ± 5ºC. The quantitative phase analyses of the clinkers were carried out by X-ray powder diffraction with the Rietveld methodology. The mineralogical composition depends on the initial dosages, on the highest temperature achieved and on the time of residence at this temperature. The reaction was completed at 1365ºC during 15 min (free CaO < 0.5 wt%), in those conditions the β-belite form is stabilized and the harmful transformation β→γ is avoided.Teniendo en cuenta el sistema cuaternario CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-Fe2O3, se han diseñado cinco composiciones de clínqueres Pórtland belíticos, con contenidos del 60 y del 65% en peso de belita (Ca2SiO4), situadas en su campo primario de cristalización. La síntesis de estos clínqueres belíticos se ha estudiado “in situ” por microscopía de alta temperatura, dilatometría y análisis térmico diferencial y termogravimétrico. La temperatura óptima de clinquerización, determinada con estas técnicas, ha sido de 1360 ± 5ºC. Los análisis cuantitativos de los clínqueres se llevaron a cabo por difracción de rayos-X con la metodología Rietveld. Los porcentajes de las diferentes fases dependen de las dosificaciones iniciales, de la temperatura alcanzada y del tiempo de residencia a dicha temperatura. Se ha conseguido una reacción total (%CaO libre < 0.5% en peso) tratando a 1365ºC durante 15 min, en cuyas condiciones se estabiliza la forma β de la belita y se evita la transformación perjudicial β→γ.

6. Parasitic load of the Pacific mackerel, Scomber japonicus (Pisces: Scombridae) from Northwestern Baja California, Mexico

Abstract

Globally, the exploitation of small pelagic fish, like Pacific mackerel is of great importance due to food industry demand. However, there are few studies regarding its parasites load and there are no in this geographic zone. This study aimed to assess the parasitic composition, some temporal changes (during spring and summer) in abundance, prevalence and intensity of infection parasitic of the Pacific mackerel (Scomber japonicus) from Todos Santos Bay, Baja California, Mexico. The parasite fauna of the Pacific mackerel consisted of 1930 parasites (1413 in spring and 517 in summer) distributed in the follow taxa: an Tetraphyllidea (Cestoda), Kuhnia scombri (Monogenea), Didymozoidae (Digenea), Anisakis sp. (Nematoda), Rhadinorhynchus sp. (Acanthocephala) and Caligus pelamydis (Copepoda). The nematodes parasite were the most abundant both in spring with a mean abundance of 27.6 parasites and in summer 8.2 parasites compared with the other taxa like Cestoda, Monogenea, Digenea, Acanthocephala and Copepoda (P = 0.003). The mean intensity of the nematodes in spring and summer was 28.1 and 13.4, respectively. The nematodes prevalence was 90 % in spring and 60 % in summer. In general, the parasite load is more abundant in spring than summer. In summer, absence of taxa as Cestoda and Copepoda were registered. Nematode larvae were present in the fish guts mesentery and inside of the stomach, pyloric caeca, intestine. Also the nematodes were found in the liver, muscle and gonads. The most affected organ by nematodes was the intestine mesentery. The most predominant parasite of this study has been Anisakis sp. during spring.

8. Crack arrest through branching at curved weak interfaces: an experimental and numerical study

Abstract

The phenomenon of arrest of an unstably-growing crack due to a curved weak interface is investigated. The weak interface can produce the deviation of the crack path, trapping the crack at the interface, leading to stable crack growth for certain interface geometries. This idea could be used as a technical solution for a new type of crack arrester, with a negligible impact on the global stiffness, strength and weight of the structure. In order to exploit this concept, an experimental campaign based on photo-elasticity and digital image correlation is carried out, showing the capability of curved weak interfaces to arrest cracks. The experiment is repeated for several geometrical configurations through the modification of the interface curvature radii. The phenomenon of crack deviation and subsequent arrest at the interface is also investigated with the assistance of a computational model based on the finite element method. The computational predictions provide the rationale for the interpretation of the experimental observations, and distinguish between the different behaviour of concave and convex interfaces. Consequently, as is shown in the present study, the curved interface concept fosters new routes for the attainment of structures with enhanced fracture resistance capacities, which are of paramount importance for materials and components used in extreme conditions., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

Background: The optimal treatment of anastomotic leak after rectal cancer resection is unclear. This worldwide cohort study aimed to provide an overview of four treatment strategies applied. Methods: Patients from 216 centres and 45 countries with anastomotic leak after rectal cancer resection between 2014 and 2018 were included. Treatment was categorized as salvage surgery, faecal diversion with passive or active (vacuum) drainage, and no primary/secondary faecal diversion. The primary outcome was 1-year stoma-free survival. In addition, passive and active drainage were compared using propensity score matching (2: 1). Results: Of 2470 evaluable patients, 388 (16.0 per cent) underwent salvage surgery, 1524 (62.0 per cent) passive drainage, 278 (11.0 per cent) active drainage, and 280 (11.0 per cent) had no faecal diversion. One-year stoma-free survival rates were 13.7, 48.3, 48.2, and 65.4 per cent respectively. Propensity score matching resulted in 556 patients with passive and 278 with active drainage. There was no statistically significant difference between these groups in 1-year stoma-free survival (OR 0.95, 95 per cent c.i. 0.66 to 1.33), with a risk difference of -1.1 (95 per cent c.i. -9.0 to 7.0) per cent. After active drainage, more patients required secondary salvage surgery (OR 2.32, 1.49 to 3.59), prolonged hospital admission (an additional 6 (95 per cent c.i. 2 to 10) days), and ICU admission (OR 1.41, 1.02 to 1.94). Mean duration of leak healing did not differ significantly (an additional 12 (-28 to 52) days). Conclusion: Primary salvage surgery or omission of faecal diversion likely correspond to the most severe and least severe leaks respectively. In patients with diverted leaks, stoma-free survival did not differ statistically between passive and active drainage, although the increased risk of secondary salvage surgery and ICU admission suggests residual confounding.

Abstract

The Large Observatory For x-ray Timing (LOFT) was studied within ESA M3 Cosmic Vision framework and participated in the final down-selection for a launch slot in 2022-2024. Thanks to the unprecedented combination of effective area and spectral resolution of its main instrument, LOFT will study the behaviour of matter under extreme conditions, such as the strong gravitational field in the innermost regions of accretion flows close to black holes and neutron stars, and the supra-nuclear densities in the interior of neutron stars. The science payload is based on a Large Area Detector (LAD, 10 m 2 effective area, 2-30 keV, 240 eV spectral resolution, 1 deg collimated field of view) and a WideField Monitor (WFM, 2-50 keV, 4 steradian field of view, 1 arcmin source location accuracy, 300 eV spectral resolution). The WFM is equipped with an on-board system for bright events (e.g. GRB) localization. The trigger time and position of these events are broadcast to the ground within 30 s from discovery. Abstract

The LOFT mission concept is one of four candidates selected by ESA for the M3 launch opportunity as Medium Size missions of the Cosmic Vision programme. The launch window is currently planned for between 2022 and 2024. LOFT is designed to exploit the diagnostics of rapid X-ray flux and spectral variability that directly probe the motion of matter down to distances very close to black holes and neutron stars, as well as the physical state of ultra-dense matter. These primary science goals will be addressed by a payload composed of a Large Area Detector (LAD) and a Wide Field Monitor (WFM). The LAD is a collimated (<1 degree field of view) experiment operating in the energy range 2-50 keV, with a 10 m^2 peak effective area and an energy resolution of 260 eV at 6 keV. The WFM will operate in the same energy range as the LAD, enabling simultaneous monitoring of a few-steradian wide field of view, with an angular resolution of <5 arcmin. The LAD and WFM experiments will allow us to investigate variability from submillisecond QPO's to year-long transient outbursts. Abstract

Ultra-high resolution synchrotron diffraction data for $\rm GdBaCo_2O_{5.5}$ throw new light on the metal-insulator transition of Co$^{3+}$ Ba-cobaltites. An anomalous expansion of CoO$_6$ octahedra is observed at the phase transition on heating, while CoO$_5$ pyramids show the normal shrinking at the closing of the gap. The insulator-to-metal transition is attributed to a sudden excitation of some electrons in the octahedra ($t_{2g}^6$ state) into the Co $e_g$ band (final $t_{2g}^4e_g^2$ state). The $t_{2g}^5e_g^1$ state in the pyramids does not change and the structural study also rules out a $d_{3x^2-r^2}/d_{3y^2-r^2}$ orbital ordering at $T_{MI}$., Comment: Phys. Rev. B (to appear)

Abstract

La esclavitud cubre casi cuatro siglos de historia en Cuba, durante los cuales pasa de ser una colonia en una crisis demográfica y económica, a uno de los mayores productores de café y azúcar. Esta transformación llevó a la instauración de un modelo económico basado en una esclavitud de plantación que, a partir de la mitad del siglo XVIII, modificaría su rol en la economía mundial. Desde una perspectiva lingüística, la exigencia de un sistema de administración adecuado condujo a la acuñación de un caudal léxico del que poco conocemos, debido a la escasez de recursos documentales. La presente contribución acude a las cuatro ediciones del Diccionario Provincial de Esteban Pichardo como fuente para analizar este léxico y se propone alcanzar los siguientes objetivos: extraer el léxico de la administración agroindustrial cubana de la macroestructura, analizar los mecanismos lexicogenéticos productivos y observar la penetración lexicográfica.

Abstract

The mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) belongs to the steroid receptor subfamily of nuclear receptors. MR is a transcription factor key in regulating blood pressure and mineral homeostasis. In addition, it plays an important role in a broad range of biological and pathological conditions, greatly expanding its interest as a pharmacological target. Non-steroidal MR antagonists (MRAs) are of particular interest to avoid side effects and achieve tissue-specific modulation of the receptor. The 1,4-dihydropyridine (1,4-DHP) ring has been identified as an appropriate scaffold to develop non-steroidal MRAs. We report the identification of a novel series of 1,4-DHP that has been guided by structure-based drug design, focusing on the less explored DHP position 2. Interestingly, substituents at this position might interfere with MR helix H12 disposition, which is essential for the recruitment of co-regulators. Several of the newly synthesized 1,4-DHPs show interesting properties as MRAs and have a good selectivity profile. These 1,4-DHPs promote MR nuclear translocation with less efficiency than the natural agonist aldosterone, which explains, at least in part, its antagonist character. Molecular dynamic studies are suggestive of several derivatives interfering with the disposition of H12 in the agonist-associated conformation, and thus, they might stabilize an MR conformation unable to recruit co-activators.

Abstract

Symbiotic cnidarians such as corals and anemones form highly productive and biodiverse coral reef ecosystems in nutrient-poor ocean environments, a phenomenon known as Darwin's paradox. Resolving this paradox requires elucidating the molecular bases of efficient nutrient distribution and recycling in the cnidarian-dinoflagellate symbiosis. Using the sea anemone Aiptasia, we show that during symbiosis, the increased availability of glucose and the presence of the algae jointly induce the coordinated up-regulation and relocalization of glucose and ammonium transporters. These molecular responses are critical to support symbiont functioning and organism-wide nitrogen assimilation through glutamine synthetase/glutamate synthase-mediated amino acid biosynthesis. Our results reveal crucial aspects of the molecular mechanisms underlying nitrogen conservation and recycling in these organisms that allow them to thrive in the nitrogen-poor ocean environments.
