In this contribution we present new U-Pb SHRIMP ages and in situ LA-ICP-MS trace element geochemistry of zircon crystals from the Río de los Sauces anatectic granite, Córdoba, Argentina. Notable difference in texture and composition allowed us to identify two zircon populations in a single granite sample that are interpreted as reflecting metamorphic and igneous origins. Zircons regarded as restitic crystals entrained during the melt segregation yielded a slightly older concordia age of 537.1 ± 4.8 Ma (2σ) than those interpreted as igneous, dated at 529 ± 6 (2σ) Ma. Inherited metamorphic zircons are interpreted to represent solid-state growth during high temperature metamorphism of the Pampean orogeny at the onset of the anatexis or metamorphic peak. By contrast, igneous zircons would record the crystallization age of Zr within the Río de los Sauces granite. The textural, compositional and geochronological data of both zircon populations suggest that the inception of the anatexis, the melt segregation and crystallization occurred during a short period of time of 8 my En este trabajo se aportan nuevos datos de edades U-Pb SHRIMP y análisis in situ LA-ICP-MS de elementos traza de circones provenientes del granito Río de los Sauces, Córdoba, Argentina. The North Patagonian Massif (NPM) area in Argentina includes a plateau of 1200 m a.s.l. (meters above sea level) average height, which is 500–700 m higher than its surrounding areas. The plateau shows no evidence of internal deformation, while the surrounding basins have been deformed during Cenozoic orogenic events. Previous works suggested that the plateau formation was caused by a lithospheric uplift event during the Paleogene. However, the causative processes responsible for the plateau origin and its current state remain speculative. To address some of these questions, we carried out 3D lithospheric-scale steady-state and transient thermal simulations of the NPM and its surroundings, as based on an existing 3D geological model of the area. Our results are indicative of a thicker and warmer lithosphere below the NPM plateau compared with its surroundings, suggesting that the plateau is still isostatically buoyant and thus explaining its present-day elevation. The transient thermal simulations agree with a heating event in the mantle during the Paleogene as the causative process leading to lithospheric uplift in the region and indicate that the thermo-mechanical effects of such an event would still be influencing the plateau evolution today. Although the elevation related to the heating would not be enough to reach the present plateau topography, we discuss other mechanisms, also connected with the mantle heating, that may have caused the observed relief. Finite volumes of magma moving in confinement, store hydraulic potential energy for the generation, control and transmission of power. The Pascal's principle in a hydraulic jack arrangement is used to model the vertical and lateral growth of sills. The small input piston of the hydraulic jack is equivalent to the feeder dike, the upper large expansible piston equivalent to the magmatic chamber and the inertial force of the magma in the dike is the input force. This arrangement is particularly relevant to the case of sills expanding with blunt tips, for which rapid fracture propagation is inhibited. Hydraulic models concur with experimental data that show that lateral expansion of magma into a sill is promoted when the vertical ascent of magma through a feeder dike reaches the bottom contact with an overlying, flat rigid-layer. At this point, the magma is forced to decelerate, triggering a pressure wave through the conduit caused by the continued ascent of magma further down (fluid-hammer effect). This pressure wave can provide overpressure enough to trigger the initial hydraulic lateral expansion of magma into an incipient sill, and still have enough input inertial force left to continue feeding the hydraulic system. The lateral expansion underneath the strong impeding layer, causes an area increase and thus, further hydraulic amplification of the input inertial force on the sides and roof of the incipient sill, triggering further expansion in a self-reinforcing process. Initially, the lateral pressure increase is larger than that in the roof allowing the sill to expand. However, expansion eventually increases the total integrated force on the roof allowing its uplift into either a laccolith, if the roof preserves continuity, or into a piston bounded by a circular set of fractures. Hydraulic models for shallow magmatic chambers, also suggest that laccolith-like intrusions require the existence of a self-supported chamber roof. In contrast, if the roof of magmatic chambers loses the self-supporting capacity, lopoliths and calderas should be expected for more or less dense magmas, respectively, owing to the growing influence of the density contrast between the host rock and the magma. The dominant geomorphological unit of the Northern Patagonian Massif landscape is a regional planation surface, eroded across the crystalline basement (plutonic and metamorphic rocks), eruptive rocks of the Gondwana cycle (Early to Middle Carboniferous), and Jurassic volcanic rocks. The most important active climate during the genesis of this surface had a very significant role, developing intense chemical weathering extending to variable depths with the corresponding degradation of the rocky material exposed at the surface. Remnants of the weathering profiles, both outcropping and fossilized by burial, are identified and described. Such a particular mega-landform was developed in a cratonic environment, mainly as a product of deep weathering, and it is interpreted as a denuded surface, an etchplain formed by corrosion followed by erosion. The analysis of the relationships between relief, saprolite, and rock cover throughout time suggests that the most important factor for the classification of the present landscape is the duration of exposure of the crystalline basement at the surface, from the end of the Paleozoic and during the entire Mesozoic. This conclusion has essential relevance for the evaluation of the effects of Mesozoic tectonics and the powerful weathering under certain climatic conditions. It is estimated that this paleosurface would have initiated its development towards the end of the Paleozoic, but later modifying also the Jurassic volcanic rocks that preceded the rifting processes that lead to the opening of the Southern Atlantic Ocean. Finally, the tectonic activity during the early Tertiary produced the exhumation of the planation surface, which was buried by its own regolith, reactivating erosion surfaces and small drainage basins. However, it is possible that some areas of the planation surface had never been covered by other rocks, other than its own overlying weathering products. Our results suggest that the landscape features should not be assigned to Quaternary morphogenesis, but instead, they have evolved over a very long time, perhaps 100 Ma or even more. These observations refer to Mesozoic times, and therefore the time scale used for the discussion of the geomorphology of the Northern Patagonian Massif should be enlarged to properly analyze the evolution of the ancient landscapes of this cratonic region. El Macizo Norpatagónico es una altiplanicie que casi no presenta deformación rodeada de cuencas con distintos grados de deformación terciaria sobre las cuales sobresale entre 500 y 700 metros. Dicho macizo sufrió un levantamiento repentino de más de 1200 m en el Paleógeno, hipotéticamente, a causa de movimientos epirogénicos. Esta última afirmación se supone de este modo ya que se puede observar la presencia de unidades formacionales de origen marino no deformadas en el macizo, las cuales se pueden encontrar en las cuencas circundantes con distintos grados de deformación. Con el fin de aportar al conocimiento acerca de la formación y el estado actual de dicha zona, se realizó la adaptación de un modelo gravimétrico tridimensional (Tassara et al., 2006 y Tassara y Echaurren, 2012) al área del Macizo Norpatagónico. Para realizar la adaptación y el análisis de los resultados se utilizó el programa de modelado gravimétrico y magnético tridimensional e interactivo IGMAS+ (Götze, 1978 y 1984, Götze y Lahmeyer 1988 y Schmidt y Götze, 1998) y se extrajeron datos de anomalías de Bouguer del modelo geopotencial EGM2008 (Pavlis et al., 2012). Se observó un buen ajuste entre las superficies calculada y observada para el modelo. Se extrajo y mapeó la superficie de la discontinuidad de Mohorovicic para el modelo, pudiéndose notar una corteza de espesor aproximadamente constante y superior a los 36 km para el área del macizo rodeada de zonas de espesor cortical inferior hacia el Este y Norte mientras que en su límite Oeste se observan áreas de corteza más potente. La adaptación deja una pequeña zona del sudeste del macizo fuera del modelo con lo cual no se tiene información de lo que ocurre en el límite sur del mismo. The North Patagonian Massif is an almost undeformed plateau surrounded by basins with some degree of deformation from which it stands between 500 to 700 m. The massif suffered a sudden uplift of about 1200 m in the Paleogene, hypothetically, caused by epeirogenic movements. The latter affirmation is based on the presence of undeformed marine formational units in the massif, which show some degree of tertiary deformation in the surrounding basins. An adaptation of a tridimensional gravimetric model to the North Patagonian Massif area was made with the aim ofcharacterize this scarcely studied area that have interesting characteristics. To make the adaptation and analysis of the results, a tridimensional and interactive gravity and magnetic modeling software called IGMAS+ was used and the Bouguer anomaly data were extracted of the EGM2008 geopotential model. A difference between the calculated and the observed surfaces of -21 mGal in mean value can be observed in the original model for the study area. A new fit was made in the area, and a difference between surfaces of -5,4 mGal in mean value was achieved which was considerably better than the original model fit for the NPM. The Mohorovicic discontinuity of the model was extracted and mapped. A crust with a thick between 35 and 45 km could be observed in the massif area surrounded by lower thickness areas in its North, West and East limits. Para realizar la adaptación y el análisis de los resultados se utilizó el programa de modelado gravimétrico y magnético tridimensional e interactivo IGMAS+ y se usaron datos de anomalías de Bouguer del modelo geopotencial EGM2008. La diferencia entre la superficie calculada del modelo gravimétrico original en el área de estudio y la superficie observada de anomalías de Bouguer del EGM2008 es en promedio de -21 mGal. Luego, se realizó un ajuste en la zona del Macizo Norpatagónico el cual resultó en una diferencia de -5,4 mGal en promedio entre ambas superficies, mejorando considerablemente el ajuste alcanzado por el modelo original en el área. Se extrajo y cartografió la superficie de la discontinuidad de Mohorovicic para el modelo, pudiéndose notar una corteza de entre 35 y 45 km para el área del macizo rodeada de zonas de espesor cortical inferior hacia el Este, Oeste y Norte. El distrito pegmatítico Comechingones, ubicado en el faldeo oriental de la sierra homónima, en la provincia de Córdoba, involucra pegmatitas graníticas correspondientes a la clase de Elementos Raros, tipo berilo, subtipo berilo-columbita-fosfatos, algunas en transición a la clase muscovítica, con mineralizaciones de Be-Nb- Ta-U y minerales industriales. Dos tipos de pegmatitas graníticas han sido descriptas en el sector sur del distrito: pegmatitas tipo I, con tamaños que en total pueden alcanzan los 1000 metros de longitud y superar los 50 de ancho, internamente zonadas y portadoras de Be, Nb-Ta y U; y pegmatitas tipo II, de menores dimensiones, no zonadas, ricas en cuarzo de alta pureza, carentes de mineralizaciones metalíferas, y asociadas espacial y genéticamente con leucogranitos aplíticos. En este trabajo se presentan y discuten los datos geoquímicos preliminares de ambos tipos de pegmatitas y granitos asociados. Los datos geoquímicos obtenidos, apoyados con descripciones de campo y petrográficas, permiten establecer que las dos tipologías de pegmatitas corresponden a dos eventos magmáticos diferentes (muy probablemente diacrónicos). El primero generó las pegmatitas tipo I, las cuales de sur a norte presentan un aumento en el grado de fraccionamiento desde pegmatitas poco evolucionadas y sin mineralizaciones de elementos raros, hasta pegmatitas evolucionadas con depósitos metalíferos de interés económico. El segundo evento dio origen a las pegmatitas tipo II y a los granitos aplíticos, y carece de especialización metalogenética, evidenciado por los indicadores de diferenciación magmática sistemáticamente inferiores a los de las pegmatitas tipo I y a la carencia de mineralizaciones metalíferas., The Comechingones pegmatitic field (CPF) is located in the eastern flank of the Sierra de Comechingones, Córdoba province. It is composed of granite pegmatites belonging to the Rare-Element class, beryl type, beryl-columbite-phosphate subtype; some of them are transitional into the Muscovite class. Beryllium, Nb, Ta and U deposits, as well as high-quality industrial mineral deposits, are frequently associated with these pegmatites. In the southern part of the CPF two different pegmatite types have been described. Type I pegmatites constitute large zoned bodies with up to 1000 m long and 50 m thick, and may constitute rare element deposits, whereas type II pegmatites occur as small, unzoned quartz-rich dykes, without metalliferous mineralizations, spatial and genetically associated with aplitic leucogranites. Preliminary geochemical data from both pegmatites types and granites are presented and discussed in this contribution. Geochemical evidences, supported by field and petrographic observations, suggest that the two types of pegmatites identified in the study area represent two different, probably diachronic, magmatic stages. Type I pegmatites display a geochemical gradation in a S-N direction, from barren pegmatites in the south to fractionated pegmatites in the northern part of the study area, and are the lithological product of the first magmatic stage. We summarize the geotectonic history of the southern (mostly Patagonian) Andean Cordillera, and its possible influence on the regional expression of global climates, biogeography, and important aspects of mammalian evolution in South America. The northern Patagonian segment of the Andes contrasts with neighbouring sections in that, during Palaeogene times, there was a transform margin stage; this influenced the Andean climate in addition to global climate changes. This segment underwent alternating subduction and transform episodes that suggest the existence of a proto-Andes and an Oligocene Andean gap for the San Carlos de Bariloche area. Coeval with this gap (and at the backarc region of this segment), the 1200-1500m uplift of the Northern Patagonian Massif took place, resulting in an altiplano (high plateau), or Northern Patagonian High Plateau (NPHP), of 100000km2, which dominated northern Patagonia during the Oligocene. It is estimated that, by these times, climate in the NPHP was humid and seasonally cool, in contrast to the seasonally more uniform, humid climates of the lower lands peripheral to it. The NPHP may have acted as a biogeographical barrier between central and southern Patagonia, on one side (as part of the Austral Biogeographical Kingdom), and the rest of South America (Holotropical Kingdom) on the other. The most important Paleogene mammalian turnover transpired at the Early Oligocene, concomitantly with the full opening of the Drake Passage and associated global cooling. The latitudinal climate gradient that began at the Eocene-Oligocene transition affected sharply the entire Patagonian region, an effect that was enhanced by the uplift of the NPHP., Se resume la historia geotectónica del sector sur (principalmente Patagonia) de la Cordillera Andina y su posible influencia en la expresión regional de los climas globales, biogeografía e importantes aspectos de la evolución de los mamíferos en Sud América. Prostegotherium cf. astrifer Figure 5 C, D This species has been collected at Laguna Fría and La Barda. This dasypodid is also of small size, although larger than Astegotherium. Its osteoderms show several punctations surrounding the central figure, not placed as an arch as in Riostegotherium, but as an anteriorly pointed ‘‘V’’. The plates have a wrinkled surface, but less so than Stegosimpsonia, with the central figure subtriangular. Astegotherium, sp. nov. Figure 5E Several isolated plates from Laguna Fría are assigned to this new taxon. This small dasypodid is of similar size to the living Dasypus hybridus or D. septencinctus, with very thin and smooth osteoderms, and a lageniform central figure in the movable scutes, as in A. dichotomus, from the Casamayoran (Vacan, Carlini et al. 2002c); very few (or no) foramina surrounding the central figure; poorly defined sulcus separating the central figure from the peripheral ones. The central keel of the exposed surface is even less elevated than in the Casamayoran species, and has one or rarely two large foramina on the posterior margin. Genus Stegosimpsonia Vizcaíno, 1994

La caldera de Piedra Parada constituye el principal edificio volcánico del Complejo Volcánico-Piroclástico del curso medio del río Chubut, situado en la provincia argentina de Chubut. Los materiales intracaldera están constituidos por coladas riolíticas, sills andesíticos, domos riolíticos y tobas de composición riolítica. Con objeto de investigar la estructura de la caldera, se han obtenido tanto datos magnéticos terrestres como aeromagnéticos. Los mapas magnéticos muestran que la caldera se encuentra definida por una anomalía magnética de forma circular interrumpida en su parte occidental por varias discontinuidades de dirección NNE-SSO a NE-SO. Intracaldera materials consist of rhyolite flows, andesites, rhyolitic glass domes and rhyolitic tuffs. Aeromagnetic and magnetic data have been collected in order to investigate the caldera ́s structure. Magnetic maps show that the caldera results in a circular magnetic anomaly. Several NNE-SSW to NE-SW trending discontinuities disrupt the anomalies in the western part. Magnetic models suggest that the caldera consists of a high susceptibility floor and a low susceptibility infill cap. Floor and infill materials crop out as adjacent bodies bounded by vertical planes. La caldera de Piedra Parada, ubicada en el sector central de la provincia del Chubut y cruzada por el río homónimo, pertenece a un gigantesco volcán, magnífico exponente de los acontecimientos geológicos acaecidos durante dicho intervalo en estas latitudes. La ruta provincial 12 la atraviesa y en ese recorrido el colorido paisaje ofrece un brusco cambio. Entre rocas blanquecinas y rojizas prolijamente apiladas en capas y rocas blanquecinas blandas y masivas, irrumpen columnas de rocas oscuras que hacia arriba adoptan la forma de hongos o paraguas. Estas rocas señalan el inicio de la actividad volcánica de intraplaca, en cuyo transcurso se desarrolló esta caldera, de unos 25 kilómetros de diámetro y con numerosos centros eruptivos menores. Los extensos afloramientos del complejo volcánico presentan gran variedad de tipos litológicos, íntimamente ligados en el tiempo y el espacio, lo que convierte al área en un sitio privilegiado para el estudio de los procesos que dieron lugar a la génesis y evolución de estos grandes volcanes.

Piedra Parada caldera is a giant volcano that stands as a reminder of the events that occurred at this latitude in the Paleogene. It is located at the heart of Chubut Province and is crosscut by the Chubut river and state road N° 12. Along the course of the road, there is a sharp change of scenery. White and red thin-bedded sandstones, to white soft massive tuffs are cut by dark mushroomshaped columns that signal the beginning of Paleogene intraplate volcanic activity with a 25 kilometers wide caldera and several smaller eruptive centres. Se describen los thundereggs que se encuentran en domos vitrofíricos de la caldera de Piedra Parada. Tanto las características geológicas, petrológicas como geoquímicas sugieren que estos crecen a partir de gotas de líquidos inmiscibles que se desvitrificaron como esferulitas de anortoclasa. La expansión de la fase vapor segregada al desvitrificarse las gotas inmiscibles, rompieron las esferulitas y desarrollaron grandes vesículas tapizadas por los pedazos rotos de la esferulita. El inmediato enfriamiento del resto del magma dio lugar a la formación de un domo vítreo con textura perlítica. Posteriormente, agua a baja temperatura lixivió al vidrio esferulítico y rellenó las cavidades de las vesículas y esferulitas con ópalo y/o calcedonia., Thundereggs at the glass domes of Piedra Parada Caldera are described. Their geological, petrological and geochemical characteristics suggest growth from immiscible liquid drops that devitrified as anorthoclase spherulites. The expansion of the segregated vapor phase of the devitrified immiscible drops broke the spherulites and made large vesicles lined with the broken pieces of the spherulite. Further cooling of the rest of the magma yielded a glass dome with perlitic texture. El distrito Gonzalito, previamente conocido como distrito Laguna Grande (Angelelli, 1984), comprende dos fajas mineralizadas con Pb, Ag, Zn, V, [Au], localizadas en el Complejo Igneo Metamórfico Gonzalito. La Faja Oriental incluye las minas Gonzalito, Vicentito, La Querencia y Polito, y la Faja Occidental las minas Tres Marías y María Teresa. Los trabajos mineros previos reconocieron la disposición escalonada de vetas de sulfuros polimetálicos en estas minas. Trabajos recientes establecen que estas vetas están asociadas espacial y temporalmente con esquistos negros metalíferos, e identifican a estos yacimientos como tipo estratoligado, y más específicamente, como SEDEX sujeto a varios eventos metamórficos precámbricos de grado mediano a alto, y posteriormente afectados por removilización hidrotermal durante el Paleozoico superior y Jurásico.
