7. Investigating the reaction of some commercial potato cultivars and fungicides on late blight disease control.

Abstract

Late blight (LB) caused by Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) de Bary, is one of the most destructive diseases of potato and tomato worldwide. Globally, application of fungicide is an effective approach for potato LB management. Isolates of P. infestans were collected from different fields in Egypt and characterized using microsatellite markers and mitcondrial DNA. Twelve fungicides were applied in vitro to test their control P. infestans isolates. Nine potato cultivars were evaluated under artificial inoculation. Field trials were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of applied fungicides to LB management and potato productivity at El-Behera governorate in two seasons. Our results revealed that collected isolates of P. infestans were A1 mating type, 23_A1 clonal lineage and Ia/IR1 mitcondrial DNA. Furthermore, potato cultivar Burren was highly resistant and recorded the lowest area under disease progress curve (AUDPC). On the other hand, cultivars Alaska, Spunta, Lady Rosita and Mondial were highly susceptible and revealed the highest AUDPC values. In vitro, all fungicide applications inhibited linear growth of P. infestans isolates (EG-Pi1 and EG-Pi2). For field trial, Equation-Pro, and Consonto were the most effective fungicides in respect of LB management where lowest disease severity and AUDPC were recorded in both prophylactically and curatively during two seasons. Moreover, potato tuber production significantly increased with Equation -- Pro application. 12. First record of Verticillium tricorpusas a causal agent of Verticilliumwilt disease in Okra

Abstract

Symptoms of infection okra plants (Abelmoschus esculentusL.) with Verticilliumwilt were recorded during the summer of 2021 in Beni Suef Governorate specifically in Nasser, Beba, and El-Wasta Counties. The symptoms appeared on the external parts of plants, specifically through the alteration of color in the leaves of infected shoots, which transition from a normal color to a light green or yellow hue, had V-shaped chlorotic lesions, loss their turgidity and eventually desiccation, plant stunting and vascular discoloration. The presence of V. tricorpuson okra has not been previously documented. The isolated fungus was identified on the basis of morphological characteristics and molecular traits by utilizing sequencing techniques applied to the internal transcribed space (ITS region) of the ribosomal RNA gene. The analysis of the fungal sequencing data revealed a substantial genetic similarity and close ties between the fungus in question and V. tricorpusby 99.24–100% identity and 97–100% coverage with several strains of V. tricorpus, including the type strain CBS447.54 (NR_126128). The obtained sequences were submitted to the GenBank database and assigned the accession number MZ936483. Pathogenicity test confirmed that V. tricorpushad pathogenic properties, as shown by the appearance of disease symptoms that were similar to those previously noted on okra plants in the surveyed regions. This observation represents the initial documentation of V. tricorpusin relation to the occurrence of Verticilliumwilt disease in okra. However, there is currently no information of host resistance to this disease among Egyptian okra cultivars, although it is essential for sustainable disease management. Our study indicate that cultivar of Balady green is more resistance to Verticilliumwilt while the Iranian red cv. is more sensitive to infection.

Abstract

Objective: to study the relationship between Insulin Growth Factor 1(IGF-1) and C - reactive protein (CRP) among diabetic frail elderly Methods: A case control study has been carried on 90 elderly aged 60 years and over, collected from (Mansora university hospital & community dwelling elderly) during the period January 2015 - July 2015. Subjects were divided into: Control group of 30 healthy elderly and cases group: of 60 frail elderly which is furtherly subdivided into two subgroups: frail with diabetes and frail without diabetes. Subjects were subjected to comprehensive geriatric assessment and study of osteoporotic fractures (SOF) index for assessment of presence of frailty. Results: IGF-1 level was significantly lower among the frail patient. Also, IGF -1 level was significantly lower among diabetic frail elderly. In addition, CRP level, significantly higher among frail elderly but there was no significant statistical difference between the frail diabetic & frail non diabetic as regards the CRP level. Conclusion: Frail elderly had a lower IGF-1 level and a higher CRP level in compare with control participant. Also, diabetic frail elderly had significantly lower IGF-1 level compared to the non-diabetics. However there was no difference between CRP level among diabetic and non-diabetic frail elderly. &nbsp

Abstract

The plant pathogenic oomycete, Phytophthora infestans, is the causal agent of late blight disease in tomato and potato. For characterizing Egyptian P. infestans isolates by DNA marker analysis, 40 isolates of P. infestans were collected from different locations in Egypt during two growing seasons (2012/2013 and 2013/2014). The 40 isolates were grouped into seven genotypes, in which 24 alleles were detected. The identified genotypes were not completely associated with geographic location and sample collection years.
