This work investigates the application of the Newton's method for the numerical solution of a nonlinear boundary value problem formulated through an ordinary differential equation (ODE). Nonlinear ODEs arise in various mathematical modeling contexts, where an exact solution is often unfeasible due to the intrinsic complexity of these equations. Thus, a numerical approach is employed, using Newton's method to solve the system resulting from the discretization of the original problem. The procedure involves the iterative formulation of the method, which enables the approximation of solutions and the evaluation of convergence with respect to the problem parameters. The results demonstrate that Newton's method provides a robust and efficient solution, highlighting its applicability to complex boundary value problems and reinforcing its relevance for the numerical analysis of nonlinear systems. In this paper, frequency dynamics in modern power systems with a high penetration of converter-based generation is analysed. A fundamental analysis of the frequency dynamics is performed to identify the limitations and challenges when the converter penetration is increased. The voltage-source behaviour is found as an essential characteristic of converters to improve the initial frequency derivative of Synchronous Generators (SGs). A detailed small-signal analysis, based on the system's eigenvalues, participation factors and mode shapes, is then performed in a reduced system for different converter penetrations, showing that the flexibility of grid-forming (GFOR) converters as well as the system's inertia reduction may lead to have a more controllable system frequency. First-order frequency responses can be programmed for high converter penetrations, when GFOR operation can impose their dominance over SGs. In this work, we examine particle creation and the evaporation process in the context of Kalb-Ramond gravity. Specifically, we build upon two existing solutions from the literature \cite{yang2023static} and \cite{Liu:2024oas}, both addressing a static, spherically symmetric configuration. For this study, we focus on the scenario in which the cosmological constant vanishes. To begin, the corrections to Hawking radiation for bosonic modes are examined by studying the Klein-Gordon equation in curved spacetime. Through the calculation of Bogoliubov coefficients, we identify how the parameter $\ell$, which governs Lorentz symmetry breaking, contributes a correction to the amplitude associated with particle production. Within this approach, the power spectrum and Hawking temperature are derived. Additionally, we obtain expressions for the power spectrum and particle number density by analyzing Hawking radiation from a tunneling viewpoint. A parallel approach is applied to fermionic modes. Yttrium calcium aluminate, with the formula CaYAl3O7, has been extensively researched due to its remarkable luminescent properties when doped or co-doped. Additionally, it exhibits exceptional piezoelectric properties at high temperatures. However, the potential magnetic properties this material can acquire through doping or co-doping have largely gone unexplored until now. In this innovative study, we investigate the quantum magnetic characteristics of yttrium calcium aluminate particles doped with transition metals such as cobalt, iron, and nickel. Our magnetic measurements of hysteresis curves in the macroscopic regime reveal intriguing magnetic characteristics that have not been documented in the literature. Given the high applicability of this material in biological microelectromechanical systems, we conducted a detailed study to demonstrate these findings.

In this work, we start by examining a spherically symmetric black hole within the framework of non-commutative geometry and apply a modified Newman-Janis method to obtain a new rotating solution. We then investigate its consequences, focusing on the horizon structure, ergospheres, and the black hole's angular velocity. Following this, a detailed thermodynamic analysis is performed, covering surface gravity, Hawking temperature, entropy, and heat capacity. We also study geodesic motion, with particular emphasis on null geodesics and their associated radial accelerations. Additionally, the photon sphere and the resulting black hole shadows are explored. In this study, we aim to enhance radiology reporting by improving both the conciseness and structured organization of findings (also referred to as templating), specifically by organizing information according to anatomical regions. This structured approach allows physicians to locate relevant information quickly, increasing the report's utility. We utilize Large Language Models (LLMs) such as Mixtral, Mistral, and Llama to generate concise, well-structured reports. Among these, we primarily focus on the Mixtral model due to its superior adherence to specific formatting requirements compared to other models. To maintain data security and privacy, we run these LLMs locally behind our institution's firewall. We leverage the LangChain framework and apply five distinct prompting strategies to enforce a consistent structure in radiology reports, aiming to eliminate extraneous language and achieve a high level of conciseness. We also introduce a novel metric, the Conciseness Percentage (CP) score, to evaluate report brevity. Our dataset comprises 814 radiology reports authored by seven board-certified body radiologists at our cancer center. In evaluating the different prompting methods, we discovered that the most effective approach for generating concise, well-structured reports involves first instructing the LLM to condense the report, followed by a prompt to structure the content according to specific guidelines. We assessed all prompting strategies based on their ability to handle formatting issues, reduce report length, and adhere to formatting instructions. Our findings demonstrate that open-source, locally deployed LLMs can significantly improve radiology report conciseness and structure while conforming to specified formatting standards.

Cages ($r$-regular graphs of girth $g$ and minimum order) and their variants have been studied for over seventy years. Here we propose a new variant, "weighted cages". We characterize their existence; for cases $g=3,4$ we determine their order; we give Moore-like bounds and present some computational results.

We report the enhancement of quantum correlations for biphotons generated via spontaneous four-wave mixing in an ensemble of cold two-level atoms. This enhancement is based on the filtering of the Rayleigh linear component of the spectrum of the two emitted photons, favoring the quantum-correlated sidebands reaching the detectors. We provide direct measurements of the unfiltered spectrum presenting its usual triplet structure, with Rayleigh central components accompanied by two peaks symmetrically located at the detuning of the excitation laser with respect to the atomic resonance. The filtering of the central component results in a violation of the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality to $4.8 \pm 1.0 \leq 1$ for a detuning of 60 times the atomic linewidth, representing an enhancement by a factor of four compared with the unfiltered quantum correlations observed at the same conditions., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We explore the gravitational properties of a nonlinear electromagnetic extension of an AdS Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hole. Our study begins with an analysis of the metric function and horizon structure, followed by calculations of the Ricci and Kretschmann scalars and an evaluation of the non-vanishing Christoffel symbols. These calculations allow us to examine geodesics and their influence on the photon sphere, shadow formation, and bending angle. In the thermodynamic framework, we evaluate essential quantities, including the Hawking temperature, entropy, heat capacity, Gibbs free energy, and Hawking radiation emission. We further investigate black hole evaporation by estimating the evaporation timescale as the black hole approaches its final state. Additionally, quasinormal modes for scalar and vector perturbations are computed using the WKB approximation to characterize oscillatory behavior of the system. Very-high-energy (0.1-100 TeV) gamma-ray emission was observed in HAWC data from the lobes of the microquasar SS 433, making them the first set of astrophysical jets that were resolved at TeV energies. In this work, we update the analysis of SS 433 using 2,565 days of data from the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory. Our analysis reports the detection of a point-like source in the east lobe at a significance of $6.6\,\sigma$ and in the west lobe at a significance of $8.2\,\sigma$. For each jet lobe, we localize the gamma-ray emission and identify a best-fit position. The locations are close to the X-ray emission sites "e1" and "w1" for the east and west lobes, respectively. We analyze the spectral energy distributions and find that the energy spectra of the lobes are consistent with a simple power-law $\text{d}N/\text{d}E\propto E^{\alpha}$ with $\alpha = -2.44^{+0.13+0.04}_{-0.12-0.04}$ and $\alpha = -2.35^{+0.12+0.03}_{-0.11-0.03}$ for the east and west lobes, respectively. The maximum energy of photons from the east and west lobes reaches 56 TeV and 123 TeV, respectively. We compare our observations to various models and conclude that the very-high-energy gamma-ray emission can be produced by a population of electrons that were efficiently accelerated.

Quantum correlations in four-wave-mixing from ensembles of cold two-level atoms may prevail without filtering over background light with well-known classical interpretations, such as Rayleigh scattering, as recently experimentally demonstrated in [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 128}, 083601 (2022)]. Here we provide an extended investigation of this effect, in which we detail the experimental procedure and the variation of the quantum correlation with various parameters of the system. Particularly, we show that the decay rate of the quantum correlations changes with the number of atoms in the sample, providing another indication of its superradiant nature. The non-classical aspects of the signal occur for short timescales, but the long timescales carry as well a lot of information on the classical correlations of the system. This slow classical regime presents also two clearly distinct time scales, which we explain by two different pathways for the creation of biphotons. From the global analysis of the data in all its timescales, we are able to derive an empirical expression to fit the data, resulting in information on, among other parameters, the sample's temperature and superradiant acceleration. In general, the reported quantum correlations present a dependence on critical parameters of the system, such as optical depth and excitation power, that is quite different from other systems used for biphoton generation, and are more robust to changes in these parameters. This opens the possibility of exploring this process for efficient generation of narrowband biphotons or of other quantum-correlated photonic states of higher order., Comment: 13 pages, 15 figures

A set of n non-collinear points in the Euclidean plane defines at least n different lines. Chen and Chv\'tal in 2008 conjectured that the same results is true in metric spaces for an adequate definition of line. More recently, it was conjectured in 2018 by Aboulker et al. that any large enough bridgeless graph on n vertices defines a metric space that has at least n lines. We study the natural extension of Aboulker et al.'s conjecture into the context of quasi-metric spaces defined by digraphs of low diameter. We prove that it is valid for quasi-metric spaces defined by bipartite digraphs of diameter at most three, oriented graphs of diameter two and, digraphs of diameter three and directed girth four.

Constrained multiobjective optimization problems (CMOPs) are commonly found in real-world applications. CMOP is a complex problem that needs to satisfy a set of equality or inequality constraints. This paper proposes a variant of the bidirectional coevolution algorithm (BiCo) with differential evolution (DE). The novelties in the model include the DE differential mutation and crossover operators as the main search engine and a non-dominated sorting selection scheme. This paper introduces the inverse modeling constrained multi-objective evolutionary algorithm based on decomposition (IM-C-MOEA/D) for addressing constrained real-world optimization problems. Our research builds upon the advancements made in evolutionary computing-based inverse modeling, and it strategically bridges the gaps in applying inverse models based on decomposition to problem domains with constraints. Dengue is a climate-sensitive mosquito-borne disease with a complex transmission dynamic. The magnetic textures generated by a perpendicularly applied magnetic field at the ferromagnetic layer of $Co/Al_{2}O_{3}/Nb$ thin film heterostructures are investigated using magneto-optical imaging and micromagnetic simulations. It is observed that the stray field caused by flux avalanches in the superconducting layer prints out a non-trivial in-plane texture in the cobalt layer, which remains stable up to temperatures much above the Nb critical temperature. These textures mimic quite closely the dendritic thermomagnetic flux avalanches that penetrate the Nb layer from its edges. For low cobalt thickness, the filamentary magnetic textures occur in pairs with opposite polarity. The previous in-plane magnetization determines the relative location of the magnetic filaments with respect to the avalanche position. The XLZD collaboration is developing a two-phase xenon time projection chamber with an active mass of 60 to 80 t capable of probing the remaining WIMP-nucleon interaction parameter space down to the so-called neutrino fog. In this work we show that, based on the performance of currently operating detectors using the same technology and a realistic reduction of radioactivity in detector materials, such an experiment will also be able to competitively search for neutrinoless double beta decay in $^{136}$Xe using a natural-abundance xenon target. XLZD can reach a 3$\sigma$ discovery potential half-life of 5.7$\times$10$^{27}$ yr (and a 90% CL exclusion of 1.3$\times$10$^{28}$ yr) with 10 years of data taking, corresponding to a Majorana mass range of 7.3-31.3 meV (4.8-20.5 meV). XLZD will thus exclude the inverted neutrino mass ordering parameter space and will start to probe the normal ordering region for most of the nuclear matrix elements commonly considered by the community., Comment: 29 pages, 7 figures

This report describes the experimental strategy and technologies for a next-generation xenon observatory sensitive to dark matter and neutrino physics. The detector will have an active liquid xenon target mass of 60-80 tonnes and is proposed by the XENON-LUX-ZEPLIN-DARWIN (XLZD) collaboration. The design is based on the mature liquid xenon time projection chamber technology of the current-generation experiments, LZ and XENONnT. A baseline design and opportunities for further optimization of the individual detector components are discussed. The experiment envisaged here has the capability to explore parameter space for Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) dark matter down to the neutrino fog, with a 3$\sigma$ evidence potential for the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross sections as low as $3\times10^{-49}\rm cm^2$ (at 40 GeV/c$^2$ WIMP mass). The observatory is also projected to have a 3$\sigma$ observation potential of neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{136}$Xe at a half-life of up to $5.7\times 10^{27}$ years. We report results of a search for nuclear recoils induced by weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter using the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) two-phase xenon time projection chamber. This analysis uses a total exposure of $4.2\pm0.1$ tonne-years from 280 live days of LZ operation, of which $3.3\pm0.1$ tonne-years and 220 live days are new. A technique to actively tag background electronic recoils from $^{214}$Pb $\beta$ decays is featured for the first time. Enhanced electron-ion recombination is observed in two-neutrino double electron capture decays of $^{124}$Xe, representing a noteworthy new background. After removal of artificial signal-like events injected into the data set to mitigate analyzer bias, we find no evidence for an excess over expected backgrounds. World-leading constraints are placed on spin-independent (SI) and spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon cross sections for masses $\geq$9 GeV/$c^2$. The strongest SI exclusion set is $2.1\times10^{-48}$ cm$^{2}$ at the 90% confidence level at a mass of 36 GeV/$c^2$, and the best SI median sensitivity achieved is $5.0\times10^{-48}$ cm$^{2}$ for a mass of 40 GeV/$c^2$., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures. While image-text representation learning has become very popular in recent years, existing models tend to lack spatial awareness and have limited direct applicability for dense understanding tasks. For this reason, self-supervised image-only pretraining is still the go-to method for many dense vision applications (e.g. depth estimation, semantic segmentation), despite the lack of explicit supervisory signals. In this paper, we close this gap between image-text and self-supervised learning, by proposing a novel general-purpose image-text model, which can be effectively used off-the-shelf for dense and global vision tasks. Our method, which we refer to as Text-Image Pretraining with Spatial awareness (TIPS), leverages two simple and effective insights. First, on textual supervision: we reveal that replacing noisy web image captions by synthetically generated textual descriptions boosts dense understanding performance significantly, due to a much richer signal for learning spatially aware representations. We propose an adapted training method that combines noisy and synthetic captions, resulting in improvements across both dense and global understanding tasks. Second, on the learning technique: we propose to combine contrastive image-text learning with self-supervised masked image modeling, to encourage spatial coherence, unlocking substantial enhancements for downstream applications. Building on these two ideas, we scale our model using the transformer architecture, trained on a curated set of public images. Our experiments are conducted on 8 tasks involving 16 datasets in total, demonstrating strong off-the-shelf performance on both dense and global understanding, for several image-only and image-text tasks.

Microquasars are laboratories for the study of jets of relativistic particles produced by accretion onto a spinning black hole. Microquasars are near enough to allow detailed imaging of spatial features across the multiwavelength spectrum. The recent extension of the spatial morphology of a microquasar, SS 433, to TeV gamma rays \cite{abeysekara2018very} localizes the acceleration of electrons at shocks in the jet far from the black hole \cite{hess2024ss433}. Here we report TeV gamma-ray emission from another microquasar, V4641~Sgr, which reveals particle acceleration at similar distances from the black hole as SS~433. Additionally, the gamma-ray spectrum of V4641 is among the hardest TeV spectra observed from any known gamma-ray source and is detected up to 200 TeV. Gamma rays are produced by particles, either electrons or hadrons, of higher energies. Because electrons lose energy more quickly the higher their energy, such a spectrum either very strongly constrains the electron production mechanism or points to the acceleration of high-energy hadrons. This observation suggests that large-scale jets from microquasars could be more common than previously expected and that microquasars could be a significant source of Galactic cosmic rays. high energy gamma-rays also provide unique constraints on the acceleration mechanisms of extra-Galactic cosmic rays postulated to be produced by the supermassive black holes and relativistic jets of quasars. The distance to quasars limits imaging studies due to insufficient angular resolution of gamma-rays and due to attenuation of the highest energy gamma-rays by the extragalactic background light.

A triangular optical cavity can be used to distinguish between two beams with the same intensity profile but different wavefronts. This is what we show in this paper, both theoretically and experimentally, in the case of beams with a doughnut-like intensity profile: one of them having a helical wavefront (vortex beam with orbital angular momentum) and the other with no orbital angular momentum at all (which we call pseudovortex beam). We write the mode decomposition of such beams in the Hermite-Gaussian basis and in the the Laguerre-Gauss basis, respectively, and study how they interact with a triangular cavity in terms of their resonance peaks. The experimental results corroborate the theory, showing that each beam displays its own resonance pattern. Lead-free metal halide perovskites are emerging as less-toxic alternatives to their lead-based counterparts. However, their applicability in optoelectronic devices is limited, and the charge transport dynamics remain poorly understood. Understanding photo-induced charge and structural dynamics is critical for unlocking the potential of these novel systems. In this work, we employ ultrafast optical and Raman spectroscopy combined with band structure calculations to investigate the coupled electronic and vibrational dynamics in Caesium gold bromide, a promising lead-free perovskite. We find that the band-edge charge transfer states are strongly coupled to Au-Br stretching phonon modes, leading to frequency modulation of absorption by impulsively excited coherent phonons. Early-stage relaxation is characterized by dynamics of delocalized charge transfer excitation and slowly decaying coherent phonons. The electronic and vibrational relaxation reveals a slow formation of a localized polaronic state in the 10-20 ps timescale. Using a displaced harmonic oscillator model, the polaronic binding energy is estimated to be ~80 meV following lattice relaxation along the phonon modes. Strong exciton-phonon coupling and slow polaron formation via coupling to lattice modes make this material a promising testbed for the control of coherent phonons and localized polaronic states using light., Comment: 38 pages, 15 Figures

In this work, we investigate the gravitational signatures of a static nonlinear electromagnetic extension of the Kerr-Newman solution. We conduct an analysis of light propagation, focusing on the photon sphere, shadow formation, and geodesic trajectories in this spacetime. The deflection angle and the time delay effects are also considered. In the thermodynamic analysis, we examine the Hawking temperature, entropy, heat capacity, and the emission of Hawking radiation via the tunneling process. The remnant mass and evaporation time of the black hole at its final stage are estimated. Pixel-based language models have emerged as a compelling alternative to subword-based language modelling, particularly because they can represent virtually any script. PIXEL, a canonical example of such a model, is a vision transformer that has been pre-trained on rendered text. While PIXEL has shown promising cross-script transfer abilities and robustness to orthographic perturbations, it falls short of outperforming monolingual subword counterparts like BERT in most other contexts. This discrepancy raises questions about the amount of linguistic knowledge learnt by these models and whether their performance in language tasks stems more from their visual capabilities than their linguistic ones. To explore this, we probe PIXEL using a variety of linguistic and visual tasks to assess its position on the vision-to-language spectrum. Our findings reveal a substantial gap between the model's visual and linguistic understanding. The lower layers of PIXEL predominantly capture superficial visual features, whereas the higher layers gradually learn more syntactic and semantic abstractions. Additionally, we examine variants of PIXEL trained with different text rendering strategies, discovering that introducing certain orthographic constraints at the input level can facilitate earlier learning of surface-level features. In November 2023, the UK and US announced the creation of their AI Safety Institutes (AISIs). Five other jurisdictions have followed in establishing AISIs or similar institutions, with more likely to follow. While there is considerable variation between these institutions, there are also key similarities worth identifying. This primer describes one cluster of similar AISIs, the "first wave," consisting of the Japan, UK, and US AISIs. First-wave AISIs have several fundamental characteristics in common: they are technical government institutions, have a clear mandate related to the safety of advanced AI systems, and lack regulatory powers. Safety evaluations are at the center of first-wave AISIs. These techniques test AI systems across tasks to understand their behavior and capabilities on relevant risks, such as cyber, chemical, and biological misuse. They also share three core functions: research, standards, and cooperation. These functions are critical to AISIs' work on safety evaluations but also support other activities such as scientific consensus-building and foundational AI safety research. Despite its growing popularity as an institutional model, the AISI model is not free from challenges and limitations. Some analysts have criticized the first wave of AISIs for specializing too much in a sub-area and for being potentially redundant with existing institutions, for example. Future developments may rapidly change this landscape, and particularities of individual AISIs may not be captured by our broad-strokes description. This policy brief aims to outline the core elements of first-wave AISIs as a way of encouraging and improving conversations on this novel institutional model, acknowledging this is just a simplified snapshot rather than a timeless prescription.

In this work, we investigate the signatures of black holes within an effective quantum gravity framework recently proposed in the literature [1] . We begin by outlining the general setup, highlighting the two distinct models under consideration. This includes a discussion of their general properties, interpretations, and the structure of the event and inner horizons. We then examine the behavior of light in this context, analyzing geodesics, the photon sphere, and shadow formation. To validate our results, we estimate lower bounds for the shadow radius based on observational data from the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). Subsequently, we derive the partial radial wave equation for scalar perturbations, enabling us to study the absorption cross section in both low and high frequency regimes. Additionally, we evaluate the greybody factors and provide bounds for both bosonic and fermionic fields. Finally, we present a detailed analysis of gravitational lensing in both the weak and strong deflection limits. Laminar separation bubbles around airfoils lead to the growth of instability waves, which enhances to acoustic scattering at the trailing-edge, forming a feedback loop that produces to tonal noise. To reduce the trailing-edge tonal noise, an array of roughness elements was used over a NACA0012 airfoil, at low angles of attack and moderate Reynolds number. Aeroacoustics and flow visualization experiments were performed for four configurations: a baseline smooth airfoil, two configurations with roughness elements on either airfoil surface (pressure side or suction side), and a fourth configuration with roughness elements at both airfoil surfaces. The roughness elements are made up of a row of spanwise periodically spaced cylinders, which were placed close to the mid-chord position. It is expected the proposed array of roughness elements stabilizes the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability mechanism that is present on the separated shear layer through the induction of streak structures. The separation bubble is assessed using oil flow visualizations, and the cases with roughness elements show the generation of streaks downstream of the array cylinders, disrupting the separation bubble. Acoustic measurements results show a decrease, and in some cases the total suppression, of the tonal noise at Reynolds numbers ranging from 0.6$\times$10$^5$ to 2.5$\times$10$^5$, and angles of attack ranging from 0 to 4 degrees., Comment: 20 pages, 17 figures

In a combined experimental and numerical effort we investigate airfoil tonal noise generation and reduction. The means of noise control are streak generators in form of cylindrical roughness elements. These elements are placed periodically along the span of airfoil at the mid chord streamwise position. Experiments are performed for a wide range of Reynolds number and angle of attack in a companion work (Alva et al. 2024). In the present work we concentrate on numerical investigations for a further investigation of selected cases. We have performed wall-resolved large-eddy simulations for a NACA 0012 airfoil at zero angle of attack and Mach 0.3. Two Reynolds numbers (80,000 and 100,000) have been investigated, showing acoustic results consistent with experiments at the same Reynolds but lower Mach numbers. Roughness elements attenuate tones in the acoustic field and, for the higher Reynolds number, suppress them. Through Fourier decomposition and spectral POD analysis of streamwise velocity data, dominating structures have been identified. Further, the coupling between structures generated by surface roughness and instability modes (Kelvin-Helmholtz) of shear layer has been identified through stability analysis, suggesting stabilisation mechanisms by which the sound generation by the airfoil is reduced by the roughness elements., Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures

Group fairness in machine learning is a critical area of research focused on achieving equitable outcomes across different groups defined by sensitive attributes such as race or gender. Federated learning, a decentralized approach to training machine learning models across multiple devices or organizations without sharing raw data, amplifies the need for fairness due to the heterogeneous data distributions across clients, which can exacerbate biases. The intersection of federated learning and group fairness has attracted significant interest, with 47 research works specifically dedicated to addressing this issue. However, no dedicated survey has focused comprehensively on group fairness in federated learning. In this work, we present an in-depth survey on this topic, addressing the critical challenges and reviewing related works in the field. We create a novel taxonomy of these approaches based on key criteria such as data partitioning, location, and applied strategies. Additionally, we explore broader concerns related to this problem and investigate how different approaches handle the complexities of various sensitive groups and their intersections. Finally, we review the datasets and applications commonly used in current research. We conclude by highlighting key areas for future research, emphasizing the need for more methods to address the complexities of achieving group fairness in federated systems.

In this paper, we investigate the age-of-information (AoI) of a power domain non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) network, where multiple internet-of-things (IoT) devices transmit to a common gateway in a grant-free random fashion. More specifically, we consider a framed setup composed of multiple time slots, and resort to the $Q$-learning algorithm to properly define, in a distributed manner, the time slot and the power level each IoT device transmits within a frame. In the proposed AoI-QL-NOMA scheme, the $Q$-learning reward is adapted with the aim of minimizing the average AoI of the network, while only requiring a single feedback bit per time slot, in a frame basis. Our results show that AoI-QL-NOMA significantly improves the AoI performance compared to some recently proposed schemes, without significantly reducing the network throughput.

We evaluate the performance of the LoRaWAN Long-Range Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (LR-FHSS) technique using a device-level probabilistic strategy for code rate and header replica allocation. Specifically, we investigate the effects of different header replica and code rate allocations at each end-device, guided by a probability distribution provided by the network server. As a benchmark, we compare the proposed strategy with the standardized LR-FHSS data rates DR8 and DR9. Our numerical results demonstrate that the proposed strategy consistently outperforms the DR8 and DR9 standard data rates across all considered scenarios. Notably, our findings reveal that the optimal distribution rarely includes data rate DR9, while data rate DR8 significantly contributes to the goodput and energy efficiency optimizations.

Multi-modal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have recently exhibited impressive general-purpose capabilities by leveraging vision foundation models to encode the core concepts of images into representations. These are then combined with instructions and processed by the language model to generate high-quality responses. Despite significant progress in enhancing the language component, challenges persist in optimally fusing visual encodings within the language model for task-specific adaptability. Recent research has focused on improving this fusion through modality adaptation modules but at the cost of significantly increased model complexity and training data needs. In this paper, we propose EMMA (Efficient Multi-Modal Adaptation), a lightweight cross-modality module designed to efficiently fuse visual and textual encodings, generating instruction-aware visual representations for the language model. Our key contributions include: (1) an efficient early fusion mechanism that integrates vision and language representations with minimal added parameters (less than 0.2% increase in model size), (2) an in-depth interpretability analysis that sheds light on the internal mechanisms of the proposed method; (3) comprehensive experiments that demonstrate notable improvements on both specialized and general benchmarks for MLLMs. Empirical results show that EMMA boosts performance across multiple tasks by up to 9.3% while significantly improving robustness against hallucinations. In this article, we introduce an original hybrid quantum-classical algorithm based on a variational quantum algorithm for solving systems of differential equations. The algorithm relies on a spectral method, which involves encoding the solution functions in the amplitudes of the quantum states generated by different parametrized circuits and transforms the task of solving the differential equations into an optimization problem. We first describe the principle of the algorithm from a theoretical point of view. We provide a detailed pseudo-code of the algorithm, on which we conduct a complexity analysis to highlight its scaling properties. We apply it to a set of examples, showcasing its applicability across diverse sets of differential equations. Virtual humans (VH) have been used in Computer Graphics (CG) for many years, and perception studies have been applied to understand how people perceive them. Some studies have already examined how realism impacts the comfort of viewers. In some cases, the user's comfort is related to human identification. For example, people from a specific group may look positively at others from the same group. Gender is one of those characteristics that have in-group advantages. For example, in terms of VHs, studies have shown that female humans are more likely to recognize emotions in female VHs than in male VHs. However, there are many other variables that can impact the user perception. To aid this discussion, we conducted a study on how people perceive comfort and realism in relation to interactive VHs with different genders and expressing negative, neutral, or positive emotions in groups. We created a virtual environment for participants to interact with groups of VHs, which are interactive and should evolve in real-time, using a popular game engine. To animate the characters, we opted for cartoon figures that are animated by tracking the facial expressions of actors, using available game engine platforms to conduct the driven animation. Our results indicate that the emotion of the VH group impacts both comfort and realism perception, even by using simple cartoon characters in an interactive environment. Furthermore, the findings suggest that individuals reported feeling better with a positive emotion compared to a negative emotion, and that negative emotion recognition is impacted by the gender of the VHs group. Additionally, although we used simple characters, the results are consistent with the perception obtained when analysing realistic the state-of-the-art virtual humans, which positive emotions tend to be more correctly recognized than negative ones.

In this work, we analyze various phenomena influenced by the gravitational field in a bumblebee gravity solution, with a particular emphasis on a traversable wormhole for massless particle modes. Specifically, we calculate the index of refraction, group velocity, time delay, modified distances, and interparticle potential, demonstrating the possibility of photon-photon interactions due to the wormhole geometry. For the latter aspect, we also extend the analysis to massive particle modes, resulting in a ``combination'' of modified Yukawa- and Couloumb-like potentials. These calculations are shown to be dependent on the wormhole's parameters, particularly the wormhole throat. Finally, we derive thermodynamic properties for photon-like modes by considering the modified dispersion relation induced by the wormhole geometry, taking into account non-interacting particle modes. In this paper, we study the existence of a solution for a class of Dirichlet problems with a singularity and a convection term. Precisely, we consider the existence of a positive solution to the Dirichlet problem $$-\Delta_p u = \frac{\lambda}{u^{\alpha}} + f(x,u,\nabla u)$$ in a bounded, smooth domain $\Omega$. The convection term has exponents with no upper limitations neither in $u$ nor in $\nabla u$. This is somewhat unexpected and rare. Inter-area oscillations have been extensively studied in conventional power systems dominated by synchronous machines, as well as methods to mitigate them. Several publications have addressed Power Oscillation Damping (POD) controllers in grid-following voltage source converters (GFOL). However, the performance of POD controllers for Grid-Forming voltage source converters (GFOR) in modern power systems with increased penetration of power electronics requires further investigation. This paper investigates the performance of GFORs and supplementary POD controllers in the damping of electromechanical oscillations in modern power systems. This paper proposes POD controllers in GFORs by supplementary modulation of active- and reactive-power injections of the converter and both simultaneously (POD- P, POD-Q and POD-PQ, respectively). The proposed POD controllers use the frequency imposed by the GFOR as the input signal, which has a simple implementation and it eliminates the need for additional measurements. Eigenvalue-sensitivity methods using a synthetic test system are applied to the design of POD controllers in GFORs, which is useful when limited information of the power system is available. In this work, we extend Saia's results on the characterization of Newton non-degenerate ideals to the context of ideals in $O_{X(S)}$, where $X(S)$ is an affine toric variety defined by the semigroup $S\subset \mathbb{Z}^{n}_{+}$. We explore the relationship between the integral closure of ideals and the Newton polyhedron. We introduce and characterize non-degenerate ideals, showing that their integral closure is generated by specific monomials related to the Newton polyhedron.

The widespread use of smartphones and tablets has made society heavily reliant on mobile applications (apps) for accessing various resources and services. These apps often handle sensitive personal, financial, and health data, making app security a critical concern for developers. While there is extensive research on software security topics like malware and vulnerabilities, less is known about the practical security challenges mobile app developers face and the guidance they seek. In this study, we mine Stack Overflow for questions on mobile app security, which we analyze using quantitative and qualitative techniques. The findings reveal that Stack Overflow is a major resource for developers seeking help with mobile app security, especially for Android apps, and identifies seven main categories of security questions: Secured Communications, Database, App Distribution Service, Encryption, Permissions, File-Specific, and General Security. The initialization of quantum states or Quantum State Preparation (QSP) is a basic subroutine in quantum algorithms. In the worst case, general QSP algorithms are expensive due to the application of multi-controlled gates required to build them. Here, we propose an algorithm that detects whether a given quantum state can be factored into substates, increasing the efficiency of compiling the QSP circuit when we initialize states with some level of disentanglement. The simplification is done by eliminating controls of quantum multiplexers, significantly reducing circuit depth and the number of CNOT gates with a better execution and compilation time than the previous QSP algorithms. Considering efficiency in terms of depth and number of CNOT gates, our method is competitive with the methods in the literature. However, when it comes to run-time and compilation efficiency, our result is significantly better, and the experiments show that by increasing the number of qubits, the gap between the temporal efficiency of the methods increases.

Algebraic lattices are those obtained from modules in the ring of integers of algebraic number fields through the canonical or twisted embeddings. In turn, well-rounded lattices are those with maximal cardinality of linearly independent vectors in its set of minimal vectors. Both classes of lattices have been applied for signal transmission in some channels, such as wiretap channels. Recently, some advances have been made in the search for well-rounded lattices that can be realized as algebraic lattices. Moreover, some works have been published studying algebraic lattices obtained from modules in cyclic number fields of odd prime degree $p$. In this work, we generalize some results of a recent work of Tran et al. and we provide new constructions of well-rounded algebraic lattices from a certain family of modules in the ring of integers of each of these fields when $p$ is ramified in its extension over the field of rational numbers., Comment: 11 pages
