Experiences, perceptions, and definitions of health and wellbeing (H&W) were explored among 10 dance students (six women, four men; mean age = 21 years ±1.26) in higher education (HE). A qualitative case study was conducted using semi-structured interviews, including questions on lifestyle, health provision, and environment. Inductive thematic analysis revealed that dancers defined H&W as holistic, hedonic, and individual experiences with wide influential determinants. Transition into HE was the biggest challenge experienced, followed by psychological challenges including impact of injury, academic pressures, and negative body image. Additional challenges included scheduling overload, accessing dance-specific health care and peer pressure. Nevertheless, many dance students engaged with health-promoting behaviours. Self-agency and self-responsibility in being healthy was addressed, as well as developing resilience during HE and the importance of everyday self-care both at physical and psychological levels. Perceived enabling factors to health included the availability of institutional provision, staff as trusted mentors, and a supporting network from family and friends. Barriers included the impact of exhaustion, cost of care and lack of self-belief. The findings provide new and useful insights into the role of HE institutions in providing effective health education and provision, as well as supporting dancers in developing and sustaining a healthy career. This study investigates the perceived role of psychological factors in achieving excellence in scientific research. Six outstanding scientists aged 33–42 were interviewed. Data were analyzed inductively resulting in three main dimensions: personality traits and characteristics, psychological skills and processes, and task-specific strategies. Researchers highlighted the importance of emotional factors and motivational processes to achieve and sustain scientific excellence. Flexible coping, emotion regulation, and goal setting were emphasized and described as particularly important in dealing with rejections, setbacks, and team management issues. Persistence and adaptive perfectionism were key individual characteristics which helped participants in nurturing and sustaining motivation. This study suggests that the specific impact of emotional, motivational, and other psychological skills at different stages of excellence development is relevant; yet, further investigation is needed. Researchers have found that many post-secondary music students suffer from physical and mental health issues. However, researchers have mainly studied these problems at the individual level, with little investigation of how music students' work is shaped by the coordinating effects of policies, texts, and discourses at and beyond their local site. This paper describes a protocol for an international project that will explore the health of music students in the context of their daily work. Using an institutional ethnography approach, we will examine the social organization of music students' work at three universities: two in Canada and one in Australia. This will be the first set of studies that use institutional ethnography specifically for the purpose of understanding how the social organization of music students' work shapes their health. Data will be collected using several methods common to institutional ethnography: interviews, focus groups, observations, and collecting texts. Data analysis will begin during the data collection process and proceed in two fluid stages. The first stage will involve a detailed investigation of the pertinent work activities at each music school. The second will involve linking that work to specific social relations within and beyond the institution. After data analysis has been completed at all three sites, findings will be compared to one another to identify commonalities and differences in how students' work is organized. Findings of the entire project may inform policy-making and lead to positive change at the institutions studied, as well as others where similar social organization may occur. The novel approach described here will provide opportunities to expand current knowledge about music students' work and health beyond what has been learned through approaches that focus on students' individual behaviours and attributes. Background and Aims According to existing literature, musicians are at risk of experiencing a range of painful musculoskeletal conditions. Recently, a novel digital technology was developed to investigate pain location and pain extent. The aim of this study was to describe pain location and pain extent in musicians using a digital method for pain drawing ( PD) analysis. Additionally, the association between PD variables and clinical features were explored in musicians with pain. Methods One hundred and fifty-eight musicians (90 women and 68 men; aged 22.4 ± 3.6 years) were recruited from Swiss and U.K. conservatories. Participants were asked to complete a survey including both background musical information and clinical features, the Quick DASH ( QD) questionnaire, and the digital PDs. Results Of the 158 participants, 126 musicians (79.7%) reported having pain, with higher prevalence in the areas of the neck and shoulders, the lower back, and the right arm. The mean percentage of pain extent was 3.1% ± 6.5%. The mean QD score was higher for musicians with pain than for those without pain. Additionally, the results indicated a positive correlation between the QD score and pain extent, and there were significant correlations between age and pain intensity, as well as between pain extent and pain intensity. Conclusions The high prevalence of pain among musicians has been confirmed using a digital technique for PD acquisition and analysis. In addition, positive correlations between pain extent and upper limb disability have been demonstrated.
